Patterns and Symmetries in the Visual Cortex and in Natural Images

As borders between different entities, lines are an important element of natural images. Indeed, the neurons of the mammalian visual cortex are tuned to respond best to lines of a given orientation. This preferred orientation varies continuously across most of the cortex, but also has vortex-like singularities known as pinwheels. In attempting to describe such patterns of orientation preference, we are led to consider underlying rotation symmetries: Oriented segments in natural images tend to be collinear; neurons are more likely to be connected if their preferred orientations are aligned to their topographic separation. These are indications of a reduced symmetry requiring joint rotations of both orientation preference and the underlying topography. This is verified by direct statistical tests in both natural images and in cortical maps. Using the statistics of natural scenes we construct filters that are best suited to extracting information from such images, and find qualitative similarities to mammalian vision. On Form Invariance, Lie Symmetry and Three Kinds of Conserved Quantities of Generalized Lagrange''''s Equations

In this paper, the form invariance and the Lie symmetry of Lagrange's equations for nonconservative system in generalized classical mechanics under the infinitesimal transformations of group are studied, and the Noether's conserved quantity, the new form conserved quantity, and the Hojman's conserved quantity of system are derived from them. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the application of the result.     

Stability and Nonlinear Deformation of Cylindrical Grids

The general stability of single-layer cylindrical grids is studied in linear and nonlinear formulations. Dependence of the general buckling load on the geometry and stiffness parameters of a grid is established in an analytical form. Such grids are numerically analyzed for stability. It is established that the general buckling load is much less than the local buckling load. Typical general buckling modes are found. It is shown that such grids are weakly sensitive to imperfections

The Gram Matrix of a PT-Symmetric Quantum System

The eigenstates of a diagonalizable PT-symmetric Hamiltonian satisfy unconventional completeness and orthonormality relations. These relations reflect the properties of a pair of bi-orthonormal bases associated with non-hermitean diagonalizable operators. In a similar vein, such a dual pair of bases is shown to possess, in the presence of PT symmetry, a Gram matrix of a particular structure: its inverse is obtained by simply swapping the signs of some its matrix elements.

共振原子蒸气中激光脉冲的时空特性

在柱对称条件下，利用耦合的布洛赫－麦克斯韦方程，研究了激光脉冲在原子蒸气介质中的共振传播。考察了脉中在时空中的演化。数值计算结果表明激光脉冲在传播中，由于自感应透明与光波的衍射效应，表现出复杂的相干现象。     

Little higgs models and T parity

Little Higgs models are an interesting extension of the Standard Model at the TeV scale. They provide a simple and attractive mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking. We review one of the simplest models of this class, the Littlest Higgs model, and its extension with T parity. The model with T parity satisfies precision electroweak constraints without fine-tuning, contains an attractive dark matter candidate, and leads to interesting phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
