Elucidation of the Role of the Complex in Hydride Transfer Reaction between Methylene Blue and 1-Benzyl-1,4-dihydronictinamide by Effect of γ-Cyclodextrin

The kinetics of the hydride transfer reaction between Methylene Blue (MB⁺) and 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (BNAH) were studied in 10% ethanol-90% water mixed solvents containing β- and γ-cyclodextrins (β-CD and γ-CD). The pseudo-first order rate constant shows kinetic saturation at high initial concentration of BNAH. This indicates the formation of a complex between MB⁺ and BNAH. The reaction was suppressed by addition of β-CD, but enhanced by addition of γ-CD. MB⁺ and BNAH were separately accommodated within the β-CD cavity and the cavity walls may protect the activity site of the reactants. On the other hand, in the MB⁺-BNAH-γ-CD system, the inclusion of the complex between MB⁺ and BNAH with γ-CD occurred. This effect of γ-CD can distinguish between the productive and non-productive nature of the complex.

Improvement of basic performances of a nickel-metal hydride battery

To develop a sealed-type nickel-metal hydride battery for use in portable equipment or in electric vehicles, investigations were conducted on negative electrodes using AB₅-type hydrogen storage alloy and positive electrodes. For the cycle life performance of the battery, alkaline treatment of the alloy and the substitution of more than 50% to the alloy with Co were effective. For the positive electrode, zinc as a solid solution in the nickel positive electrode obviously prevented γ-NiOOH from being formed in the charging process of β-Ni(OH)₂ and suppressed the migration of the electrolyte solution in the separator to the active material of the positive electrode. Also, hydrophobic treatment of the surface of the alloy was effective to prevent the elevation of the battery internal pressure of the battery in high rate charge.     

Tributyltin hydride-mediated straightforward synthesis of a new isoxazolo-benzazulene ring system

Tributyltin hydride-mediated straightforward synthesis of a new isoxazolo-benzazulene system from the derivatives afforded by the Baylis-Hillman reaction of 3-(2-bromophenyl)-4-isoxazolecarbaldehydes is described.     

Heterometallic hafnocene(+4) aluminum hydride complex [(ηp5-C5H5)2Hf(H)(μ2-H)Al(H)Br(μ2-OC4H9)]2

The [Cp₂HfH₂Al(H)Br(OBu)]₂ complex (1) was prepared by the reaction of Cp₂HfBr₂ with AlH₃ in THF and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The formation of dinuclear complex 1 proceeds through the intermediate formation (as a result of cleavage of THF molecules) of the >Al(μ-OBu)₂Al< fragment. The latter is linked to two hafnocene dihydride molecules by the Hf-H-Al hydrogen bridges. 3-Cyanopyridine-2(1H)-thiones and 3-cyano-2-(methylthio)pyridines in the synthesis of substituted 3-(aminomethyl)pyridines

The reactions of substituted 3-cyanopyridine-2(1H)-thiones and 3-cyano-2-(methylthio)pyridines with lithium aluminum hydride in anhydrous diethyl ether afforded the corresponding 3-aminomethyl derivatives, which were used in the synthesis of the corresponding amides.     

Hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry with insitu graphite tube trapping for the determination of Se (IV) and Se (VI) in baltic sea water samples

This paper reports the results of an optimisation study for a procedure to determine the total selenium and its inorganic species, Se(IV) and Se(VI) using atomic absorption spectrometry combined with hydride generation and in-situ trapping of the analyte on the inner walls of the graphite tube. With the use of the proposed modification, a detection limit (3σ) of 0.018 ng/ml is achieved. This paper presents exemplary results, according to the proposed procedure, for selenium determination in samples of marine water. The concentrations of selenium in the samples ranged from <0.02 ng/ml to 0.16ng/ml of Se(IV) and from <0.02 ng/ml to 0.10 ng/ml of Se(VI).
