There is increasing interest in obtaining quantitative imaging parameters to aid in the assessment of tumor responses to treatment. In this study, the feasibility of performing integrated diffusion, perfusion and permeability magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for characterizing responses to dexamethasone in intracranial tumors was assessed. Eight patients with glioblastoma, five with meningioma and three with metastatic carcinoma underwent MRI prior to and 48-72 h following dexamethasone administration. The MRI protocol enabled quantification of the volume transfer constant (K(trans)), extracellular space volume fraction (nu(e)), plasma volume fraction (nu(p)), regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV), longitudinal relaxation time (T(1)) and mean diffusivity (D(av)). All subjects successfully completed the imaging protocol for the presteroid and poststeroid scans. Significant reductions were observed after the treatment for K(trans), nu(e) and nu(p) in enhancing tumor as well as for T(1) and D(av) in the edematous brain in glioblastoma; on the other hand, for meningioma, significant differences were seen only in edematous brain T(1) and D(av). No significant difference was observed for any parameter in metastatic carcinoma, most likely due to the small sample size. In addition, no significant difference was observed for enhancing tumor rCBF and rCBV in any of the tumor types, although the general trend was for rCBV to be reduced and for rCBF to be more variable. The yielded parameters provide a wealth of physiologic information and contribute to the understanding of dexamethasone actions on different types of intracranial tumors.  相似文献

Full and approximate models describing changes in gas pressure for non-stationary single- and double-reservoir methods of testing of gas permeability of porous materials were formulated. The models include effects of compressibility and slip of gas. For derivation of the approximate models it was assumed that a transient mass flux of gas is constant along the tested sample (spatially homogeneous). The assumption allowed finding analytical solutions for evolution of reservoir pressures as well as the transient spatial distributions of pore pressure in tested samples. The full model was solved with help of the finite element method and the results were compared with the derived approximations. The comparison shows very good agreement of predictions of both models. Parametric studies have given the evaluation of the role of selected material parameters (permeability, porosity and slip factor) and parameters of the experimental system (initial pressure, volume of reservoirs), especially important from the point of view of identification procedures of the material parameters.  相似文献

Permeability (P) of Cl2, O2, N2 and H2 was measured in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite membranes with two different degrees of cross-linking. The permeability was measured in the low pressure range (1–3 bar absolute) over a fairly large temperature range 35–120°C. The functionalities of the membranes were compared on the basis of permeation rate and ability to separate the gases Cl2–O2. These results are part of an extensive survey where perfluorinated and carbon membranes are also included (not reported here). The purpose of the project is to develop an industrial membrane with high permselectivity for either O2 or Cl2 (depending on the type of membrane) at temperatures preferably above 70°C. Process conditions are set in an industrial project. The PDMS membranes are good candidates for this separation, having a high permeation rate for Cl2 and a selectivity of Cl2/O2 in the range of 8–25 depending on temperature. Durability of the PDMS membranes in this aggressive environment is found to be very dependent on process conditions and on how the material is polymerized and cured. For documentation of durability, various silicones were tested; these results are to be reported separately.  相似文献

The Composites Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology has found optical coherence tomography (OCT) to be a powerful tool for non-destructive characterization of polymer matrix composites. Composites often exhibit superior properties to traditional materials such as wood and metal. However, the barrier to their widespread infiltration into consumer markets is cost. Composites can be made more cost competitive by improved composite design, process optimization, and quality control. OCT provides a means of evaluating the three aforementioned areas. OCT is a very versatile technique that can be applied to a variety of problems in polymer composites such as: microstructure determination for permeability and mechanical property prediction, void, dry spot, and defect detection, and damage evaluation. Briefly, OCT uses a low coherence source such as a superluminescent diode laser with a fiber optic based Michelson interferometer. In this configuration, the composite is the fixed arm of the interferometer. Reflections from heterogeneities within the sample are mapped as a function of thickness for any one position. Volume information is generated by translating the sample on a motorized stage. Information about the location and size of a feature within the composite is obtained. In this work, the power of OCT for imaging composite microstructure and damage is presented. An example of permeability prediction using the composite microstructure imaged from OCT is demonstrated. The effect of image processing on the value of permeability is discussed. Using the same sample, OCT imaging of composite impact damage is compared to more traditional techniques, X-ray computed tomography and confocal microscopy.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Population persistence in isolated habitat fragments is investigated using integrodifference equations. The propensity of individual dispersers encountering the boundary of the patch to emigrate is defined by edge permeability. A dispersal model incorporating movement, settlement and edge permeability defines dispersal success as a function of a disperser's starting location. This dispersal model is used to generate dispersal kernels for integrodifference equation models, analysis of which gives a condition for population persistence in terms of edge permeability, patch size and average dispersal distance. An approximation reduces the spatial problem to a simple nonspatial model that can be easily analyzed.  相似文献

Permeability of testes in sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus intermedius, was investigated by using an electron-opaque tracer, lanthanum nitrate. This tracer is able to enter the basal compartment of germinative epithelium, where developing germ cells are located. However, its ability to penetrate the gonadal lumen was reduced. An incomplete permeability barrier between the basal compartment and the gonadal lumen is supposed to exist in testes of S. intermedius.  相似文献

Composite membranes (with thickness around 100–200 μm) containing highly in-plane aligned Sendust flakes embedded in polyvinyl alcohol matrix were prepared with a novel infiltration method. As compared with tape-casting method, infiltration method results in enhanced magnetic permeability, which could be caused by better alignment and less porosity. Annealing process could modify the grain size, improve saturation magnetization and coercivity of Sendust flakes. Hence, the radio and quasi-microwave frequency permeability (between 10 MHz to 3 GHz) of composites membranes with annealed Sendust flakes could be enhanced significantly as compared with that of the as-prepared flakes. Infiltration method is especially suitable for composites with high concentration of flaky fillers. The composite membranes prepared have potential applications, including electromagnetic shielding, noise reduction and wave absorption.  相似文献

Microwave magnetic performance of thin ferromagnetic films is of interest in view of many technical problems. For measuring the microwave permeability, a shorted stripline technique is in common use. Recently, a coaxial technique has been developed for permeability measurements of films deposited onto a flexible substrate. The coaxial technique is reported to be advantageous over the conventional stripline method in wideband operating range and accuracy. In this paper, measurement results are presented which are obtained with these two techniques for Fe–N films. It is found that the magnetoelastic effect contributes greatly to the measured microwave permeability of the films. With the coaxial measurements under an external magnetic bias, this effect may be accounted for to estimate the permeability of a plane film sample. Additional information on the properties of the film can also be extracted from these data, such as estimations of average magnetic anisotropy field and of the magnetostriction constant of the film.  相似文献

We have studied sub-stoichiometric Ni-Cu-Zn ferrites with iron deficiency (i.e., <50mol% Fe2O3) of composition Ni0.20Cu0.20Zn0.60+zFe2−zO4−(z/2) with 0≤z≤0.06. The temperature of maximum shrinkage rate is shifted from T=1000 °C for z=0 towards lower temperatures down to T=900 °C for a sub-stoichiometric ferrite with z=0.02. Dense samples are obtained after firing at 900 °C for z>0 only. Sub-stoichiometric compositions (z>0) do not form single-phase spinel ferrites after sintering at 900 °C, but rather represent mixtures of CuO and a stoichiometric ferrite with slightly modified composition. The formation of small amounts of CuO at grain boundaries is demonstrated by XRD and SEM. The permeability is increased from μ=80 for stoichiometric ferrites (z=0) to μ=660 for z=0.02. The formation of CuO during sintering of sub-stoichiometric ferrites supports densification and is a prerequisite for low temperature firing of multilayer inductors. Addition of 1 wt% Bi2O3 as liquid phase sintering aid is required to provide sufficient densification of the stoichiometric ferrite (z=0) at 900 °C. Addition of 0.37 wt% Bi2O3 to a sub-stoichiometric ferrite (z=0.02) results in dense samples after firing at 900 °C; however, the microstructure formation is dominated by heterogeneous grain growth.  相似文献
