Function spaces over GO-spaces: Part I

We describe the structure of spaces of continuous step functions over GO-spaces. We establish a relation between the Dedekind completion of a GO-space L and properties of the space of continuous functions from L to 2 with finitely many steps. We use the established relation to prove that a countably compact GO-space L has Lindelöf Cp(L) iff the Dedekind remainder of L is Lindelöf and every compact subspace of L is metrizable. Or equivalently, a countably compact GO-space L has Lindelöf Cp(L) iff every compact subspace of L is metrizable and a Gδ-set in L. Other results are obtained.

Synthesis of poly(p‐phenylene sulfide) from bis(4‐bromophenyl) disulfide

Improved reaction conditions for the preparation of poly(p‐phenylene sulfide) (PPS) directly from bis(4‐bromophenyl) disulfide (BBD) have been established. Heating BBD with magnesium metal afforded only a low molecular weight polymer. PPS with a melting temperature around 280 °C was obtained from BBD in the presence of sodium carbonate or zinc metal. The best results were obtained with the addition of a catalytic amount of KI to the zinc–BBD mixture. Polymers prepared by the above methods are semicrystalline and dissolve in 1‐chloronaphthalene and have properties comparable to commercial PPS. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of poly(ethylene oxide) with pending 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl groups and its further initiation of the grafting polymerization of styrene

A new stratagem for the synthesis of amphiphilic graft copolymers of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain and hydrophobic polystyrene as the side chains is suggested. A poly(ethylene oxide) with pending 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyls [poly(4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl‐co‐ethylene oxide)] was first prepared by the anionic ring‐opening copolymerization of ethylene oxide and 4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl, and then the graft copolymerization of styrene was completed with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator in the presence of poly(4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl‐co‐ethylene oxide). The polymerization of styrene was under control, and comblike, amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐g‐polystyrene was obtained. The copolymer and its intermediates were characterized with size exclusion chromatography, ¹H NMR, and electron spin resonance in detail. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diastereoselective Photochemical Synthesis of α-Amino-β-hydroxyketones by Photocycloaddition of Carbonyl Compounds to 2,5-Dimethyl-4-isobutyloxazole

Summary. The photocycloaddition of aldehydes and α-ketoesters to 2,5-dimethyl-4-isobutyloxazole leads to bicyclic oxetanes with high to moderate (exo) diastereoselectivity that can be easily ring-opened to give α-amino-β-hydroxyketones.     

Synthesis of Surface-Modified Nanoparticles via Cycloaddition-Reactions

Summary. The surface modification of nanoparticles via azide/alkine-1,3-dipolar cycloaddition-reactions is described. Ligand exchange onto various nanoparticles was monitored by ¹H NMR spectroscopy and formed the basis for the attachment of ligands onto the nanoparticles and their subsequent modification by dipolar cycloaddition reactions. Nanoparticle-surfaces were monitored by binding onto self-assembled monolayers derivatized with matching supramolecular interactions after derivatization.     

Leggett-Williams norm-type theorems for coincidences

We study the existence of positive solutions to the operator equation Lx = Nx, where L is a linear Fredholm mapping of index zero and N is a nonlinear operator. Using the properties of cones in Banach spaces and Leray-Schauder degree for completely continuous operators, k-set contractions and condensing mappings, we obtain some refinements of the results established in [3] and [14].
