An existence result for a quadrature surface free boundary problem

The aim of this paper is to present two different approachs in order to obtain an existence result to the so-called quadrature surface free boundary problem. The first one requires the shape derivative calculus while the second one depends strongly on the compatibility condition of the Neumann problem. A necessary and sufficient condition of existences is given in the radial case.     

Nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations with Neumann boundary condition

We study Neumann problem for a class of nonlinear degenerate parabolic PDE. A typical nonlinearity we have in mind is, for instance, β(u)=−1/u(u>0). We establish a necessary and sufficient condition on given data for existence of solution.

Zusammenfassung. Optimale Quantisierungen oder – damit ?quivalent – minimale Summen von Momenten spielen in mehreren Zweigen der Mathematik und ihrer Anwendungen eine Rolle. Ausgehend von der Fejes Tóth'schen Ungleichung für Summen von Momenten in der euklidischen Ebene und einem zugeh?rigen Stabilit?tssatz, werden gewisse Erweiterungen auf normierte R?ume und riemannsche Mannigfaltigkeiten h?herer Dimension besprochen. Die Ergebnisse werden dann auf Probleme aus folgenden Bereichen angewendet: (i) Datenübertragung, (ii) Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie, (iii) numerische Integration, (iv) Approximation konvexer K?rper und (v) isoperimetrische Probleme. Degeneracy in NLP and the development of results motivated by its presence

We study notions of nondegeneracy and several levels of increasing degeneracy from the perspective of the local behavior of a local solution of a nonlinear program when problem parameters are slightly perturbed. Ideal nondegeneracy at a local minimizer is taken to mean satisfaction of second order sufficient conditions, linear independence and strict complimentary slackness. Following a brief exploration of the relationship of these conditions with the classical definition of nondegeneracy in linear programming, we recall a number of optimality and regularity conditions used to attempt to resolve degeneracy and survey results of Fiacco, McCormick, Robinson, Kojima, Gauvin and Janin, Shapiro, Kyparisis and Liu. This overview may be viewed as a structured survey of sensitivity and stability results: the focus is on progressive levels of degeneracy. We note connections of nondegeneracy with the convergence of algorithms and observe the striking parallel between the effects of nondegeneracy and degeneracy on optimality conditions, stability analysis and algorithmic convergence behavior. Although our orientation here is primarily interpretive and noncritical, we conclude that more effort is needed to unify optimality, stability and convergence theory and more results are needed in all three areas for radically degenerate problems.Research supported by National Science Foundation Grant ECS 90-00560 and Grant N00014-89-J-1537 Office of Naval Research     

Second-order necessary optimality conditions for domain optimization problems of the Neumann type

In this paper, we treat a domain optimization problem in which the boundary-value problem is a Neumann problem. In the case where the domain is in a three-dimensional Euclidean space, the first-order and the second-order necessary conditions which the optimal domain must satisfy are derived under a constraint which is the generalization of the requisite of constant volume.Portions of this paper were presented at the 13th IFIP Conference on System Modelling and Optimization, Tokyo, Japan, 1987.
