On the correlation of sojourn times in open networks of exponential multiserver queues

We consider the joint distribution of successive sojourn times of customers traversing a path in Jackson network. It is shown in a general setting that sojourn times exhibit positive dependence. This especially applies to paths which admit overtaking due to the network topology as well as due to the internal node structure.

Two Generalized Constructions of Relative Difference Sets

We give two generalizations of some known constructions of relative difference sets. The first one is a generalization of a construction of RDS by Chen, Ray-Chaudhuri and Xiang using the Galois ring GR(4, m). The second one generalizes a construction of RDS by Ma and Schmidt from the setting of chain rings to a setting of more general rings.

Gaussian spectral rules for second order finite-difference schemes

Earlier the authors suggested an algorithm of grid optimization for a second order finite-difference approximation of a two-point problem. The algorithm yields exponential superconvergence of the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map (or the boundary impedance). Here we extend that approach to PDEs with piecewise-constant coefficients and rectangular homogeneous subdomains. Examples of the numerical solution of the 2-dimensional oscillatory Helmholtz equation exhibit exponential convergence at prescribed points, where the cost per grid node is close to that of the standard five-point finite-difference scheme. Our scheme demonstrates high accuracy with slightly more than two grid points per wavelength and reduces the grid size by more than three orders as compared with the standard scheme.

Effects of initial frequency chirp on the linear propagation characteristics of the exponential optical pulse

In this paper, the linear propagation characteristics of the exponential optical pulse with initial linear and nonlinear frequency chirp are numerically studied in a single mode fibre for \be₂<0. It can be found that the temporal full width at half maximum and time-bandwidth product of exponential pulse monotonically increase with the increase of propagation distance and decrease with the increase of linear chirp C for C<0.5, go through an initial decreasing stage near \zeta=1, then increase with the increase of propagation distance and linear chirp C for C\geq0.5. The broadening of pulses with negative chirp is faster than that with positive chirp. The exponential pulse with linear chirp gradually evolves into a near-Gaussian pulse. The effect of nonlinear chirp on waveform of the pulse is much greater than that of linear chirp. The temporal waveform breaking of exponential pulse with nonlinear chirp is first observed in linear propagation. Furthermore, the expressions of the spectral width and time-bandwidth product of the exponential optical pulse with the frequency chirp are given by use of the numerical analysis method.
