A Homological Approach to Two Problems on Finite Sets

We propose a homological approach to two conjectures descended from the Erdös-Ko-Rado Theorem, one due to Chvátal and the other to Frankl and Füredi. We apply the method to reprove, and in one case improve, results of these authors related to their conjectures.

Integral Representation of Invariant Functions

We characterize those positive functions which are invariant for a bounded kernel, and which have a Choquet-type integral representation. Such a representation relies on the wellknown Choquet-type integral representation of measures which are invariant for a kernel. We apply our results to convolution kernels with spread-out measures on second countable locally compact Abelian groups.     

On the Maximum Number of Cliques in a Graph

A clique is a set of pairwise adjacent vertices in a graph. We determine the maximum number of cliques in a graph for the following graph classes: (1) graphs with n vertices and m edges; (2) graphs with n vertices, m edges, and maximum degree Δ; (3) d-degenerate graphs with n vertices and m edges; (4) planar graphs with n vertices and m edges; and (5) graphs with n vertices and no K₅-minor or no K_3,3-minor. For example, the maximum number of cliques in a planar graph with n vertices is 8(n − 2). Asymptotic analysis of stochastic programs

In this paper we discuss a general approach to studying asymptotic properties of statistical estimators in stochastic programming. The approach is based on an extended delta method and appears to be particularly suitable for deriving asymptotics of the optimal value of stochastic programs. Asymptotic analysis of the optimal value will be presented in detail. Asymptotic properties of the corresponding optimal solutions are briefly discussed.

Nonhomogeneous multiparameter problems in Orlicz–Sobolev spaces

This paper is concerned with the existence and multiplicity of solutions for a class of problems involving the Φ-Laplacian operator with general assumptions on the nonlinearities, which include both semipositone cases and critical concave convex problems. The research is based on the subsupersolution technique combined with a truncation argument and an application of the Mountain Pass Theorem. The results in this paper improve and complement some recent contributions to this field.
