Gerbes,Clifford Modules and the Index Theorem

The use of bundle gerbes and bundle gerbe modules is considered as a replacement for the usual theory of Clifford modules on manifolds that fail to be spin. It is shown that both sides of the Atiyah-Singer index formula for coupled Dirac operators can be given natural interpretations using this language and that the resulting formula is still an identity.

Descent Monomials, P-Partitions and Dense Garsia-Haiman Modules

A two-variable analogue of the descents monomials is defined and is shown to form a basis for the dense Garsia-Haiman modules. A two-variable generalization of a decomposition of a P-partition is shown to give the algorithm for the expansion into this descent basis. Some examples of dense Garsia-Haiman modules include the coinvariant rings associated with certain complex reflection groups.     

A Bivariant Chern character for p-summable quasihomomorphisms

We define a Chern character for p-summable quasihomomorphisms. We study its properties and show that it is compatible with the analytic index. The results are similar to Connes' results on the Chern character on K-homology but the methods are different. This solves most of a problem of Connes.

Duality in algebra and topology

We apply ideas from commutative algebra, and Morita theory to algebraic topology using ring spectra. This allows us to prove new duality results in algebra and topology, and to view (1) Poincaré duality for manifolds, (2) Gorenstein duality for commutative rings, (3) Benson–Carlson duality for cohomology rings of finite groups, (4) Poincaré duality for groups and (5) Gross–Hopkins duality in chromatic stable homotopy theory as examples of a single phenomenon.     

On the theory and application of a domain decomposition method for computing conformal modules

We consider the theory and application of a domain decomposition method for computing the conformal modules of long quadrilaterals. The method has been studied already by us and also by Gaier and Hayman. Our main purpose here is to extend its area of application and, in the same time, improve some of our earlier error estimates.     

Duality, Vector Spaces and Absolutely Convex Modules

It is well-known (see Semadeni, Queen Pap. Pure Appl. Math., 33:1–98, 1973 and Pumplün and Röhrl, Commun. Algebra, 12(8):953–1019, 1984, 1985) that the embedding of vector spaces into the category of absolutely convex modules is reflective. As we will show, under a separatedness condition on these modules it is at the same time coreflective. This is a peculiar situation, see Kannan, Math. Ann., 195:168–174, (1972) and Hu $\textrm {\u{s}}It is well-known (see Semadeni, Queen Pap. Pure Appl. Math., 33:1–98, 1973 and Pumplün and R?hrl, Commun. Algebra, 12(8):953–1019, 1984, 1985) that the embedding of vector spaces into the category of absolutely convex modules is reflective. As we will show, under a separatedness condition on these modules it is at the same time coreflective. This is a peculiar situation, see Kannan, Math. Ann., 195:168–174, (1972) and Huek, Reflexive and coreflexive subcategories of unif and top, Seminar Uniform Spaces, Prague, 113–126, (1973), but we do find it also in the embedding (Lowen, Approach Spaces: The Missing Link in the Topology-Uniformity-Metric Triad. Oxford Mathematical Monographs, Oxford University Press, London, UK, 1997) and, by extension, in the embedding (see Lowen and Verwulgen, Houst. J. Math, 30(4):1127–1142, 2004, and Sioen and Verwulgen, Appl. Gen. Topol., 4(2):263–279, 2003. We demonstrate that, in this setting, by duality arguments, absolutely convex modules are indeed the numerical counterpart of vector spaces. All these, at first sight unrelated facts, are comprised in the commutative scheme below with natural dualisation functors and their left adjoints.
