Thermal Analysis of Manganese(II) Complexes With L-proline and L-hydroxyproline

The thermal decomposition reactions of manganese(II) complexes with L-proline and 4-hydroxy- L-proline were studied. The Mn(II) proline complex loses the water molecule at 40–95°C and then, heated above 250°C it decomposes in several steps to manganese oxide. The most appropriate kinetic equations for dehydration process are the geometrical R2 or R3 ones. They give a value of activation energy, E of about 95 kJmol^–1. The Mn(II) hydroxyproline complex loses the water molecules in two stages (70–110 and 110–230°C) and next it decomposes to manganese oxide in several steps. The R3 or D3 (three-dimensional diffusion) models are the most appropriate for the first stage of dehydration (E is about 155 kJ mol^–1). The second step of dehydration is limited by D3 mechanism (E=52 kJ mol^–1). This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Weak Copositive and Intertwining Approximation

It is known that shape preserving approximation has lower rates than unconstrained approximation. This is especially true for copositive and intertwining approximations. ForfL_p, 1p<∞, the former only has rateω(f, n⁻¹)_p, and the latter cannot even be bounded byC f_p. In this paper, we discuss various ways to relax the restrictions in these approximations and conclude that the most sensible way is the so-calledalmostcopositive/intertwining approximation in which one relaxes the restriction on the approximants in a neighborhood of radiusΔ_n(y_j) of each sign changey_j.

Normality criteria for families of holomorphic mappings of several complex variables into

By applying the heuristic principle in several complex variables obtained by Aladro and Krantz, we shall prove some normality criteria for families of holomorphic mappings of several complex variables into , the complex N-dimensional projective space, related to Green's and Nochka's Picard type theorems. The equivalence of normality to being uniformly Montel at a point will be obtained. Some examples will be given to complement our theory in this paper.

     

Periodic solutions of damped differential systems with repulsive singular forces

We consider the periodic boundary value problem for the singular differential system: where , , and . The singular potential is of repulsive type in the sense that as . Under Habets-Sanchez's strong force condition on at the origin, the existence results, obtained by coincidence degree in this paper, have no restriction on the damping forces . Meanwhile, some quadratic growth of the restoring potentials at infinity is allowed.

     

On the Size of a Cap in PG(n,q) with q Even and n ≥ 3

Let m2(n,q), m2(n,q) be, respectively, the maximum value, the second largest value of k for which there exists a complete k-cap in PG(n,q). In this paper, the known upper bound on m2(3,q), q even, q 8, is improved. This new upper bound on m2(3,q) is then used to improve the upper bounds on m2(n,q), q even, q 8 and n 4.     

Convergence of Appell Polynomials of Long Range Dependent Moving Averages in Martingale Differences

We study limit distribution of partial sums S_N,k(t) = _{s = 1} ^{[N t]} A_k(X_s) of Appell polynomials of the long-range dependent moving average process X_t> = _{i t} b_{t - i i}, where {_i} is a strictly stationary and weakly dependent martingale difference sequence, and b_i i^{d - 1} (0 < d < 1/2). We show that if k(1-2 d)<1, then suitably normalized partial sums S_N,k(t) converge in distribution to the kth order Hermite process. This result generalizes the corresponding results of Surgailis, and Avram and Taqqu obtained in the case of the i.i.d. sequence { _i}.     

A tunable reentrant resonator with transverse orientation of electric field for in vivo EPR spectroscopy

There has been a need for development of microwave resonator designs optimized to provide high sensitivity and high stability for EPR spectroscopy and imaging measurements of in vivo systems. The design and construction of a novel reentrant resonator with transversely oriented electric field (TERR) and rectangular sample opening cross section for EPR spectroscopy and imaging of in vivo biological samples, such as the whole body of mice and rats, is described. This design with its transversely oriented capacitive element enables wide and simple setting of the center frequency by trimming the dimensions of the capacitive plate over the range 100-900 MHz with unloaded Q values of approximately 1100 at 750 MHz, while the mechanical adjustment mechanism allows smooth continuous frequency tuning in the range +/-50 MHz. This orientation of the capacitive element limits the electric field based loss of resonator Q observed with large lossy samples, and it facilitates the use of capacitive coupling. Both microwave performance data and EPR measurements of aqueous samples demonstrate high sensitivity and stability of the design, which make it well suited for in vivo applications.     

On the two basic problems of complex damping theory

In this paper, two important basic problems relating to the complex damping theory are discussed. The two problems are: (1) the essence of complex damping, and (2) the dynamic solution of structures with complex damping in time domain. To investigate the above problems, the frequency-dependent viscous damping theory is established and the correct and applicable solution of forced vibration for a complex damping oscillator is given beforehand.Supported by the Joint Earthquake Foundation
