Inclusion of cinnamaldehyde in modified γ-cyclodextrins

This work deals with the formation of inclusion complexes between cinnamaldehyde and two synthetic alkylcarbonates of γ-cyclodextrin, namely ethylcarbonate-γ-CD and octylcarbonate-γ-CD. Complexation was monitored by phase-solubility studies, by FT-IR spectroscopy and by DSC and TG analysis. The diffusion of cinnamaldehyde through a cellulose membrane was investigated in the absence and in the presence of each of the two γ-CD alkylcarbonates. Studies on photostability and stability over time were carried out on different cosmetic formulations containing pure cinnamaldehyde or an equivalent amount of cinnamaldehyde complexed with the two alkylcarbonates. Phase-solubility diagrams, DSC, FTIR and TGA analysis suggested the formation of inclusion complexes. The diffusion of cinnamaldehyde through the cellulose membrane decreased in the presence of the two alkylcarbonates confirming the interaction of this molecule with the inclusion agents. Moreover the stability of cinnamaldehyde to light and heat resulted increased by complexing this fragrance material with the two alkylcarbonates.     

On linear and nonlinear Rossby waves in an ocean

This paper deals with recent developments of linear and nonlinear Rossby waves in an ocean. Included are also linear Poincaré, Rossby, and Kelvin waves in an ocean. The dispersion diagrams for Poincaré, Kelvin and Rossby waves are presented. Special attention is given to the nonlinear Rossby waves on a β-plane ocean. Based on the perturbation analysis, it is shown that the nonlinear evolution equation for the wave amplitude satisfies a modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The solution of this equation represents solitary waves in a dispersive medium. In other words, the envelope of the amplitude of the waves has a soliton structure and these envelope solitons propagate with the group velocity of the Rossby waves. Finally, a nonlinear analytical model is presented for long Rossby waves in a meridional channel with weak shear. A new nonlinear wave equation for the amplitude of large Rossby waves is derived in a region where fluid flows over the recirculation core. It is shown that the governing amplitude equations for the inner and outer zones are both KdV type, where weak nonlinearity is balanced by weak dispersion. In the inner zone, the nonlinear amplitude equation has a new term proportional to the 3/2 power of the difference between the wave amplitude and the critical amplitude, and this term occurs to account for a nonlinearity due to the flow over the vortex core. The solution of the amplitude equations with the linear shear flow represents the solitary waves. The present study deals with the lowest mode (n=1) analysis. An extension of the higher modes (n?2) of this work will be made in a subsequent paper.     

Palladium catalyzed mild reduction of α,β-unsaturated compounds by triethylsilane

The palladium(II) chloride/triethylsilane system has been successfully applied for the selective hydrogenation of the carbon-carbon double bond of α,β-unsaturated ketones to yield the corresponding saturated carbonyl compounds. The reaction takes place under mild conditions and affords high yields.     

Recent developments in the synthesis of 11β-aryl-estrone derivatives

An industrial synthesis of 11β-aryl-estrone derivatives is described, based on the 1,4-addition of the aryl side-chain, as a cuprate, on to a mixture of allylic 5(10) alpha and beta epoxides, followed by hydrolysis and subsequent aromatization.     

Compositions for health products obtained by treatment of tomato with beta-cyclodextrin

The aim of this work was to produce lycopene-containing powders from tomato products by a solvent-free method making use of β-cyclodextrin (βCD). Powders were prepared by spray-drying a tomato concentrate (TC), one of the most bioavailable form of lycopene, after mechanical treatment with βCD in different weight ratios. The obtained product was centrifuged to eliminate partly food matrix and characterized for the amount of lycopene hydrodispersed/hydrosolubilized in the aqueous fraction. The chemical antioxidant activity of sera was evaluated too. Powders obtained by spray-drying sera exhibited good flow properties, a lycopene content between 0.4 and 1.09 mg/g and excellent water dispersability. The process developed, which makes use of βCD for the treatment of tomato products, turns to be of great interest to obtain a bulk material for nutraceuticals displaying superior biovailability of lycopene.     

Calculation of cyclodextrin-mediated enantiomer ratio shifting of racem norgestrel in aqueous solutions

Enantioselective solubility of rac-norgestrel was found in the presence of γ-cyclodextrin or hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin. In both cases the efficacious enantiomer was dissolved in greater extent. Calculating the molar absorptivity and molar ellipticity spectra of the γ- and hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin aqueous complexes, a simple and rapid direct circular dichroism (CD) spectrometric method was obtained for the determination of the enantiomer ratio in aqueous solutions.     

Opening of epoxides with aromatic amines promoted by indium tribromide: a mild and efficient method for the synthesis of β-amino alcohols

A mild and efficient synthesis of β-amino alcohols by aminolysis of epoxides promoted by indium tribromide is described. The methodology is regio- and chemoselective and works well with independence of the epoxide or the aromatic amine used. In addition, the reaction can be carried out in a wide variety of undried solvents under air.
