Peripatetic Highlights in Bern

This tour of significant scientific sites in Bern uses the local legacy of its most illustrious scientists, Albert Einstein (1879–1955) and Fritz Houtermans (1903–1966), as its guiding thread through the old town and the university district.Ann M.Hentschel is translator of the correspondence volumes of The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein and is currently employed by the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Bern to write the guide for a city tour of Einsteins old haunts in Bern for the coming jubilee of special relativity in 2005. I.I. Rabi: The Two Cultures and the Universal Culture of Science

I set forth and discuss I.I. Rabis views on the nature of science and society, focusing specifically on Rabis views on science and government, science and education, and science and religion. I also explore the influence of Rabi and C.P. Snow on each other. In the 1960s, Rabi set forth his mature and boldest positions, advocating science as the center of education and science as the replacement for religion. His positions culminate in science as the universal culture. I highlight Rabi not only as a scientist and public servant, but also as a public intellectual actively engaged with and connected to major issues of his time.Michael A. Day is Professor of Physics at Lebanon Valley College. He holds doctorates in both physics and philosophy.     

Enrico Fermi in Pisa

I discuss the early work of Enrico Fermi (1901-1954) as a student in Pisa at the Scuola Normale Superiore and at the University of Pisa (1918-1922), paying particular attention to the four papers he published during those years and to his licenza and doctoral theses.

Ettore Majorana’s Course on Theoretical Physics: A Recent Discovery

We analyze in some detail the course that Ettore Majorana gave on theoretical physics at the University of Naples between January and March 1938, just prior to his mysterious disappearance. We discuss, in particular, the recently discovered Moreno Lecture Notes, in which all of Majorana’s lectures are recorded, six of which are not present in those that are preserved in the Domus Galilaeana in Pisa, Italy. Antonino Drago is a retired professor of history of physics at the University of Naples “Federico II.” Salvatore Esposito is a researcher on theoretical physics and history of physics at the University of Naples “Federico II.”     

Nuclear Physics in Norway, 1933–1955

In the late 1940s and the 1950s, Norwegian nuclear scientists, engineers, and administrators were deeply split over their nation’s goals, organization, politics, and tools for research in nuclear physics. One faction was determined to build a nuclear reactor in Norway, while another fiercely opposed the reactor plans and focused on particle accelerators. The first faction comprised scientific entrepreneurs and research technologists, the second academic scientists, most of whom began their research careers in nuclear physics in the 1930s. To understand this conflict, I trace the development of nuclear research in Norway from the early 1930s to the mid-1950s, placing it within an international context. Roland Wittje is working on his habilitation thesis in the History of Science Unit at the University of Regensburg, Germany.

A guided tour of significant sides pertaining to the history of physics is conducted around the area of the Technische Universit?t and the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt in Berlin-Charlottenburg, of the Institutes of the former Kaiser Wilhelm Society in Berlin-Dahlem, as well as to some points of interest in the area of Potsdam.     

Oxidopyrylium [5+2] cycloaddition chemistry: Historical perspective and recent advances (2008–2018)

The following review article provides an overview of oxidopyrylium [5+2] cycloaddition chemistry, with a particular emphasis placed on seminal historical developments and advancements made over the last decade. It is our hope this review serves as a valuable resource to those interested in the oxidopyrylium cycloaddition chemistry, and helps inspire future advancements.     

A Conversation with Franco Rasetti

Along with Enrico Fermi, Franco Rasetti played a key role in the rebirth of Italian physics in the 1920s and 1930s. In this interview he talks about his experiments at Caltech on the Raman effect in 1928–1929, mountain climbing, his passion for bugs, fossils, and flowers, and doing physics in Florence, Rome, Berlin-Dahlem, and Quebec. Rasetti also reminisces about the Rome school of mathematics and other scientists he has known and worked with in Europe and in North America, including Robert and Glenn Millikan, Lise Meitner, and O. M. Corbino.     

Reduction of chromano–piperidine-fused isoxazolidines: Tandem intramolecular rearrangements leading to 2-(methylamino)-4-oxo-N-phenyl-N-propyl-4H-chromene-3-carboxamide

Reductive ring opening of isoxazolidine moiety of chromano–piperidine-fused isoxazolidines (3a–c) with HCOONH₄ and 10% Pd/C in a mixture of solvents (THF/MeOH) at ambient temperature, affords novel 2-(methylamino)-4-oxo-N-phenyl-N-propyl-4H-chromene-3-carboxamide (4), which is apparently derived from reductive NO bond cleavage followed by tandem intramolecular rearrangements. Plausible mechanistic rationale for the formation of compound 4 is proffered.
