A new on-line sample preparation system for the liquid chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry simultaneous analysis of pesticides in river water.

Current on-line solid-phase extraction methods combined with HPLC for shortening the clean-up operation are not suitable for simultaneously detecting compounds that have a wide variety of hydrophobicities. To solve these problems, we designed a new on-line sample preparation system. The system consists of an eluting pump, a mixing TEE connector, a 10-port 2-position valve and a solid-phase extraction precolumn. The eluate from the precolumn is diluted with a weak solvent from the HPLC at the TEE connection to load low hydrophobic compounds onto the analytical column. The proposed on-line sample preparation system was successfully applied to the simultaneous analysis of 21 pesticides in river water using LC/TOF-MS. In this method, the recoveries from river water samples were 67 to 126% (mean 83%), the reproducibility (CV%) was in the range from 1.1 to 11% (mean 5.6%), the calibration curve was linear in the range from 1 ppb to 500 ppb (r > 0.999) and the detection limits (S/N = 3) were in the range from 0.0034 ppb (daimuron) to 3.3 ppb (oxine-copper).     

Chiral separation of synthetic vicinal diol compounds by capillary zone electrophoresis with borate buffer and beta-cyclodextrin as buffer additive.

The investigation on capillary electrophoretic enantioseparation of six synthetic compounds containing vicinal diol groups has been undertaken to acquire the optimum conditions using native beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) as chiral selector and borate as a background electrolyte. The separation was carried out in an uncoated capillary (58.5 cm x 75 microm i.d., effective length 48.5 cm) and the effects of several important factors were investigated in detail. The results showed that beta-CD as a chiral selector exhibited good enantioselectivity and that the enantioseparation was greatly influenced by the structure of the diols, the borate concentration and the buffer pH. The optimum performance was obtained for the chiral vicinal diols under the conditions of 200 mM borate buffer of pH 9.8 containing 1.7% beta-CD at an applied voltage of 15 kV and a capillary temperature of 20 degrees C. Under the conditions, four diols were baseline separated with fast analysis time and the good theoretical plate numbers (above 10 x 10(4)) and favorable migration-time reproducibilities (RSDs below 3.0%) were obtained. The separation results were satisfactory.     

A highly sensitive and rapid assay for protein determination in human urine and penicillin using a Rayleigh light-scattering technique with benzeneazo-8-acetylamino-1-naphthol-3,6-disulfonic acid sodium salt.

A simple and sensitive method was conducted for the determination of trace amounts of proteins with benzeneazo-8-acetylamino-1-naphthol-3,6-disulfonic acid sodium salt (azophloxine, AP) using a Rayleigh light-scattering (RLS) technique. At pH 2.60 and in the presence of an emulsifier OP microemulsion, the RLS of AP can be greatly enhanced by proteins, owing to the interaction between AP and protein. The enhanced intensity is proportional to the concentration of proteins. Four proteins, including bovine serum albumin (BSA), human serum albumin (HSA), lysozyme (Lys) and gamma globulin (gamma-G) have been tested. For example, the linear range of BSA was 0 - 0.06 microg mL(-1) with detection limits of 2.38 ng mL(-1). The method was applied to the analysis of protein in human urine and penicillin samples with satisfactory results. The relative standard deviation was in all instances less than 4.0%, and the recovery was in the range of 97.5 - 104%.     

Effect of Bias Step on the I-V Curve in Double-Barrier AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs Resonant-Tunnelling Devices

We investigate the non-equilibrium electron transport properties of double-barrier AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs resonant- tunnelling devices in nonlinear bias using the time-dependent simulation technique. It is found that the bias step of the external bias voltage applied on the device has an important effect on the final current-voltage （I - V） curves. The results show that different bias step applied on the device can change the bistability, hysteresis and current plateau structure of the I - V curve. The current plateau occurs only in the case of small bias step. As the bias step increases, this plateau structure disappears.     

Tunable negative refraction by electro-optical control in two-dimensional photonic crystal

This paper describes a simple hydrothermal procedure for high-yield synthesis of single-crystalline ZnO hexagonal nanoplates in a surfactant-free system at 70 °C. The structures and morphologies of the synthesized ZnO nanoplates are derived from characterisation by X-ray diffraction, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Their optical properties are recorded by Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy. These ZnO hexagonal nanoplates exhibit the enhanced photocatalytic activity of phenol photodecomposition, suggesting that they could be served as an active system for the treatment of the waste water, in addition to their common applications. Probabilistic Teleportation of an Arbitrary Unknown Two-Qubit State via Positive Operator-Valued Measure and Two Non-maximally Entangled States

We present a scheme for probabilistically teleporting an arbitrary unknown two-qubit state through a quantum channel made up of two nonidentical non-maximally entangled states. In this scheme, the probabilistic teleportation is realized by using a proper positive operator-valued measure instead of usual projective measurement.
