Flow-injection determination of 3-hdroxybutyrate in serum with an immobilized 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase reactor and chemiluminescence detection

A flow-injection system for the determination of 3-hydroxybutyrate in serum is described. 3-Hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase is immobilized on poly(vinyl alcohol) beads and incorporated in a flow-injection system. 1-Methoxy-5-methylphenazinium methylsulphate reacts with enzymatically generated NADH to give H₂O₂, which is detected chemiluminometrically with the reaction of luminol and hexacynoferrate(III). Serum is diluted and filtered through an ultrafiltration membrane. The system responds linearly to injected samples (80 μl) in the concentration range 0.5–300 μM; the detection limit is 0.1 μM. The within-day relative standard deviation (n = 90) for 58 μM 3-hydroxybutyrate in serum is 0.8%. The maximum throughout is 20 samples per hour. The immobilized enzyme is stable for at least 1 month.     

H2S·HOH or H2O·HSH, which is more stable in the water-hydrogen sulfide complex?

High-level ab initio calculations are carried out to study the relative stability of the two hydrogen bonded structures of water-hydrogen sulfide complex, one with water as the proton donor (A) and the other with hydrogen sulfide as the proton donor (B). The results show that structure A is considerably more stable than B at the correlated level, which is in contrast with previous results obtained from Hartree-Fock calculations.

Chemical synthesis and electric properties of the conducting copolymer of aniline and o‐aminophenol

A copolymer, poly(aniline‐co‐o‐aminophenol), was prepared chemically by using ammonium peroxydisulfate as an oxidant. The monomer concentration ratio of o‐aminophenol to aniline strongly influences the copolymerization rate and properties of the copolymer. The optimum composition of a mixture for the chemical copolymerization consisted of 0.3 M aniline, 0.021 M o‐aminophenol, 0.42 M ammonium peroxydisulfate, and 2 M H₂SO₄. The result of cyclic voltammograms in a potential region of ?0.20 to 0.80 V (vs.SCE) indicates that the electrochemical activity of the copolymer prepared under the optimum condition is similar to that of polyaniline in more acid solutions. However, the copolymer still holds the good electrochemical activity until pH 11.0. Therefore, the pH dependence of the electrochemical property of the copolymer is improved, compared with poly(aniline‐co‐o‐aminophenol) prepared electrochemically, and is much better than that of polyaniline. The spectra of IR and ¹H NMR confirm that o‐aminophenol units are included in the copolymer chain, which play a key role in extending the usable pH region of the copolymer. The visible spectra of the copolymers show that a high concentration ratio of o‐aminophenol to aniline in a mixture inhibits the chain growth. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The magnetic entropy changes in Gd1−xBx alloys

A series of Gd_(1−x)B_x alloys have been prepared by arc melting method. After introducing small quantity of B atom in Gd, the Curie temperature of these alloys increase while the magnetic entropy changes are almost same as that of Gd. The refrigerant capacities of these alloys are also greater than that of Gd. These results suggest that Gd_(1−x)B_x alloys may be utilized as refrigerant in household magnetic refrigeration.     

Mathematical models of innovation diffusion with stage structure

Mathematical models with stage structures are proposed to describe the process of awareness, evaluation and decision-making. First, a system of ordinary differential equations is presented that incorporates the awareness stage and the decision-making stage. If the adoption rate is bilinear and imitations are dominant, we find a threshold above which innovation diffusion is successful. Further, if the adoption rate has a higher nonlinearity, it is shown that there exist bistable equilibria and a region such that an innovation diffusion is successful inside and is unsuccessful outside. Secondly, a model with a time delay is proposed that includes an evaluation stage of a product. It is proved that the system exhibits stability switches. The bifurcation direction of equilibria is also discussed.

Reflection of Surface Plasmon Polaritons by a Corner Reflector of Negative Index Materials

A novel type of corner reflector for the reflection of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is proposed. The reflector consists of two layers of compensatory media whose permittivity and permeability take opposite signs to that of the corresponding layer of the SP waveguide. By rigorously solving Maxwell's equations, the reflected SPP is proved to exist. The transverse wave vector of the reflected SPP is always antiparallel to that of the incident SPP and no phase retardation is introduced.
