On the transition from supercritical to subcritical Hopf bifurcations

By using the method of averaging, we give a complete Hopf bifurcation diagram when the differential equation has more than one parameter. The method is applied to a system of parabolic equations with nonlinear coupling on the boundary. This set of equations is a mathematical model which describes the normalized concentrations of substances in a solution produced by two enzymes.     

Theory of Z-scan technique using Gaussian-Bessel beams with a phase object

This paper reports the theoretical study of combining Z-scan technique with Gauss-Bessel (GB) beams beside a phase object (PO) to measure the third-order nonlinear susceptibility components.By using this method,the sign of refractive index which depends on the shape of the close aperture Z-scan curve can be easily determined.Meanwhile,the magnitude of nonlinear coefficients can also be deduced by theoretical fit.The proposed method is advantageous for high sensitivity and imposes a lower stress in the cases of fragile materials,since small pulse energy is enough for the measurement of nonlinear coefficients.Predictions of the models are compared with Gaussian Z-scan measurement and GB Z-scan measurement.By using GB beams with a PO,the sensitivity of Z-scan measurements is found to be a factor of over 60 times greater than for Gaussian beams and 2 times greater than for Gaussian-Bessel beams.     

Thin and defect-free Pd-based composite membrane without any interlayer and substrate penetration by a combined organic and inorganic process

A novel combined organic and inorganic process for preparing thin supported membrane was developed, using which a thin and defect-free Pd membrane with uniform thickness of 5 microm was directly coated onto porous alpha-Al2O3 hollow fiber without any interlayer and substrate penetration; at the same time, there existed a small interstice between membrane and substrate, which led to higher hydrogen permeance, infinite selectivity, and better membrane stability.     

双壳程连续螺旋折流板换热器的数值模拟

本文提出了一种新型的双壳程连续螺旋折流板换热器。采用数值模拟方法对双壳程、单壳程连续螺折流板换热器,以及弓形折流板换热器壳侧流动与传热持性进行了对比研究。结果表明,同质量流量和对流换热系数近似相等的情况下,双壳程连续螺旋折流板换热器壳程压降比弓形折流板换热器低17.7%～23.5%,同质量流量和壳程压降近似相等的情况下,其对流换热系数比单壳程连续螺旋折流板换热器高7.1%～12.6%。     

Self-organized periodic surface structures on ZnO induced by femtosecond laser

Self-organized periodic surface structures on ZnO have been observed after multiple linearly polarized femtosecond laser pulse irradiation. The observed self-organized structures are attributed to the second harmonics in the sample surface excited by the incident laser. The grating orientation could be adjusted by the laser polarization direction. We also find that fluences play an important role in the formation of self-organized nanostructures.     

Group delay dispersion compensation in an Ytterbium-doped fiber laser using intracavity Gires-Tournois interferometers

This paper reports the use of a pair of multi-cavity Gires-Tournois interferometer (GTI) mirrors in a ring cavity Ytterbium-doped fiber laser for dispersion compensation. The optical spectrum was broadened by 6 nm due to the large negative group delay dispersion introduced by the light undergoing 10 round trips between the GTI mirrors. The design of the GTI mirrors and the optimisation of the layers are discussed and fabrication results are presented.     

The position independence of heterostructure coupled waveguides in photonic-crystal switch

Based on studying the propagation states of electromagnetic waves in heterostructure coupled waveguides produced by appropriately modulating the refractive index of rods, the realization of photonic-crystal switch is analyzed and the position effect of the heterostructure coupled waveguides on the switch function is investigated. The simulation results show that the output state is the result of the integral effect of different coupling regions; therefore, the switch function is independent on the distribution of heterostructure coupled waveguides. This property will bring great flexibility to fabricate photonic-crystal switch in practice.
