A program for evaluating equilibrium constants from spectrophotometric data by non-linear regression analysis

A new program, CFTSP, is described for computing stability constants and molar absorptivities from data on the absorbances of mixtures of a metal ion with a ligand. It is written in FORTRAN 77, can run on personal computers, and has facilities for interactive data analysis and presentation that ease the operator's task in searching for the equilibrium model that best fits the experimental data. A critical evaluation of the performance of the program is presented, and some general criteria for selecting equilibrium parameters, making use of both synthetic and experimental data, are described.     

Phase behavior of polarizable spherocylinders in external fields

Applied electric fields are known to induce significant changes in the properties of systems of polarizable molecules or particles. For rod-shaped molecules, the field-induced behavior can be rather surprising, as in the case of the negative electric birefringence of concentrated solutions of rodlike polyelectrolytes. We have investigated the interplay of shape anisotropy and field-induced anisotropy in molecular dynamics simulations of systems of polarizable soft spherocylinders in an electric field, in the limit of infinitely anisotropic polarizability, taking full account of mutual induction effects. We find a novel crystalline structure (K(2)) in the high-field limit, whose formation is driven by interactions between induced dipoles. For high pressures, the phase diagram exhibits a polar nematic phase between the hexagonal close-packed crystal phase and the K(2) phase. We also compare this system with an analogous system of spherocylinders with permanent electric dipoles and find that qualitatively similar behavior is obtained in the limit of strong coupling of the permanent dipoles to the external field.     

How Fast can a Subharmonic Function Decay Along a Ray?

Much is known about the connection between the growth and decayof subharmonic functions. Simultaneous determination of pseudouridine and creatinine in untreated urine by ion-pair liquid chromatography with diode-array ultraviolet detection

A simple procedure for the simultaneous determination of pseudouridine and creatinine in urine using ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection is described. It consists of simply diluting the filtered urine with mobile phase (1:20) followed by direct chromatographic injection. A single analysis takes only 10 min. This method has been applied to the analysis of urine samples from normal donors and patients with different types of cancer. The mean values, means, of the peak-area ratio of pseudouridine to creatinine were 61.79.10(-3) and 81.92.10(-3) for male and female normal donors, respectively. Out of twenty-five urine samples of patients with cancer examined, nineteen (all the forteen males included) had values higher than means + 2 sigma.

Summary The potential of a computational approach for the quantitative resolution of seriously overlapping chromatographic peaks when there is loss of collinearity between the pure component peaks and the mixture peak has been explored. The program makes iterative use of the Kalman filter algorithm for resolving the mixture peak with the component peaks aligned according to some values of the position parameters, and of a steepest descent minimization procedure to find the optimal alignment. This combined procedure has been applied to the quantitive resolution of the HPLC chromatograms of alternariol and altenuisol mycotoxins in synthetic mixtures and in real samples.     

Relation between voice-onset time and vowel duration.

As part of an investigation of the temporal implementation rules of English, measurements were made of voice-onset time for initial English stops and the duration of the following voiced vowel in monosyllabic words for New York City speakers. It was found that the VOT of a word-initial consonant was longer before a voiceless final cluster than before a single nasal, and longer before tense vowels than lax vowels. The vowels were also longer in environments where VOT was longer, but VOT did not maintain a constant ratio with the vowel duration, even for a single place of articulation. VOT was changed by a smaller proportion than the following voiced vowel in both cases. VOT changes associated with the vowel were consistent across place of articulation of the stop. In the final experiment, when vowel tensity and final consonant effects were combined, it was found that the proportion of vowel duration change that carried over to the preceding VOT is different for the two phonetic changes. These results imply that temporal implementation rules simultaneously influence several acoustic intervals including both VOT and the "inherent" interval corresponding to a segment, either by independent control of the relevant articulatory variables or by some unknown common mechanism.
