Zur Theorie der Gleichgewichtsfiguren homogener Flüssigkeiten

Ohne ZusammenfassungDiese Arbeit und eine zweite über die Gestalt des Weltmeeres sind von L. Lichtenstein hinterlassen worden; er beabsichtigte, darüber in Adorf am 2. 9. 33 vorzutragen. Die zweite Arbeit wird, von K. Maruhn herausgegeben, in dem dem Andenken Lichtensteins gewidmeten Bande der Prace Matematyczno-Fizyczne erscheineu.Das mir von Frau Prof. Dr. St. Lichtenstein übergebene Manuskript enthält alle Formeln in definitiver Gestalt. Diese Formeln sind von mir mit Nummern versehen und dadurch für den Leser kenntlich gemacht worden. Die wenigen im Manuskript enthaltenen erläuternden Worte sind kursiv gedruckt worden. Der übrige Text, für den ich verantwortlich bin, sollte dem Leser auch alles das aus Lichtensteins Buch Gleichgewichtsfiguren rotierender Flüssigkeiten, Berlin 1933. (zitiert als Glfig.) zusammenstellen, was zum Verständnis der vorliegenden Arbeit, die eine neue Grundlegung der Theorie enthält, nötig ist. Von den neun Bleistiftskizzen des Manuskripts habe ich drei reproduziert, welche die in Betracht kommenden Verhältnisse genügend illustrieren.     

On the nature of the magnetic transition in a Mott insulator

Using a combination of exact enumeration and the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) we study the drastic change of the spectral properties, obtained in the half-filled two-dimensional Hubbard model at a transition from an antiferromagnetic to a paramagnetic Mott insulator, and compare it with the results obtained using the quantum Monte Carlo method. The coherent hole (electron) quasiparticle spin-polaron subbands are gradually smeared out when the AF order disappears, either for increasing Coulomb repulsion U at fixed temperature T, or for increasing T at fixed U. One-dimensional metallic behavior of the stripe phase in La2-xSrxCuO4

Colorimetric determination of glutamic acid in protein hydrolysates

Glutamic acid contained in protein hydrolysates was adsorbed on Amberlite IR-4B columns at pH 3–4 and eluted with N HCl. Addition of nitrite to the eluates converted glutamic acid into the corresponding lactone of hydroxyglutaric acid. Hydroxylamine reacted with this lactone to give a hydroxamic acid, which was determined colorimetrically following the addition of ferric chloride.     

Spectral functions of isolated Ce adatoms on paramagnetic surfaces

We report photoemission experiments revealing the full valence electron spectral function of Ce adatoms on Ag(111), W(110), and Rh(111) surfaces. A transfer of Ce 4f spectral weight from the ionization peak towards the Fermi level is demonstrated upon changing the substrate from Ag(111) to Rh(111). In the intermediate case of Ce on W(110) the ionization peak is found to be split. This evolution of the spectra is explained by means of first-principles theory, which clearly demonstrates that a reliable understanding of magnetic adatoms on metal surfaces requires simultaneous low and high energy spectroscopic information.     

Ultrafast transport of laser-excited spin-polarized carriers in Au/Fe/MgO(001)

Hot carrier-induced spin dynamics is analyzed in epitaxial Au/Fe/MgO(001) by a time domain approach. We excite a spin current pulse in Fe by 35 fs laser pulses. The transient spin polarization, which is probed at the Au surface by optical second harmonic generation, changes its sign after a few hundred femtoseconds. This is explained by a competition of ballistic and diffusive propagation considering energy-dependent hot carrier relaxation rates. In addition, we observe the decay of the spin polarization within 1 ps, which is associated with the hot carrier spin relaxation time in Au.
