Mild and Useful Method for N-Acylation of Amines

Iodine is found to promote quantitative N-acylation of primary and secondary amines (aliphatic and aromatic) in a very short time with an equimolar amount of acetyl chloride and benzoyl chloride under solvent-free conditions at room temperature. This catalytic acylation of amines offers an additional useful method for the acetylation using acetyl chloride instead of acetic anhydride and other acetylating agents. This method is also useful in the N-acylation of heterocycles. Mild reaction condition, high selectivity, efficiency, and good yields are some of the major advantages of the procedure.     

Quantitative Characterization of Bovine Serum Albumin, α-Lactalbumin and β-Lactoglobulin in Commercial Whey Sample by RP-LC

A simple, sensitive and precise reverse phase liquid chromatographic method has been developed and validated for quantification of bovine serum albumin (BSA), α-lactalbumin (α-La) and β–lactoglobulin (β-Lg) that are removed from whey waste by foam fractionation method. The data is reproducible over a wide concentration range. This optimized method allowed analysis of BSA, α-La, β-Lg in a mixture within 5 min and could be applied to the analysis of a variety of commercial and laboratory whey products within a short time.     

Two storage inventory model with fuzzy deterioration over a random planning horizon

An inventory model for a deteriorating item with stock dependent demand is developed under two storage facilities over a random planning horizon, which is assumed to follow exponential distribution with known parameter. For crisp deterioration rate, the expected profit is derived and maximized via genetic algorithm (GA). On the other hand, when deterioration rate is imprecise then optimistic/pessimistic equivalent of fuzzy objective function is obtained using possibility/necessity measure of fuzzy event. Fuzzy simulation process is proposed to maximize the optimistic/pessimistic return and finally fuzzy simulation-based GA is developed to solve the model. The models are illustrated with some numerical data. Sensitivity analyses on expected profit function with respect to distribution parameter λ and confidence levels α₁ and α₂ are also presented.     

Design of a 50 kW, wideband Ka-band slow wave cyclotron amplifier

A two-stage slow wave cyclotron amplifier is investigated to demonstrate a high power, stable, and broad Ka-band radiation source, operating at a low beam power (~60 kV, ~5 amps) and a low magnetic field (~7 kG). A linear theory predicts that the second harmonic gyro-BWO is competing in the amplifier and can be stabilized by inserting a sever in the interaction circuit. A slow-time-scale non-linear code, with a sever included, predicts a saturated gain of 24-28 dB, an efficiency of 15-17%, and an instantaneous bandwidth of 15-20% at a beam axial velocity spread of 2%. A broadband RF coupler, a mode converter, and a RF vacuum window are designed by the use of a 3D electromagnetic, finite element code. Measured RF characteristics are in good agreement with predictions     

Isomer differentiation and structural characterization of penem β-lactam antibiotics by mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy spectrometry

A number of clinically significant penem β-lactams, both free acids and sodium salts, were investigated by mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy spectrometry (MIKES) following fast atom bombardment (FAB) ionization. The collisionally activated dissociation (CAD) products of [M + H] ⁺ and [M + Na]⁺ ions are described. Carbon dioxide loss was observed for some of the free acids, whereas a daughter ion generated by β-lactam ring cleavage was characteristic of the sodiated species. Other fragments included successive cleavages and rearrangements of the substituent side-chain, permitting complete characterization of these chains. The fragmentation pattern for both protonated and sodiated species were more clearly established by CAD MIKES than by normal FAB mass spectral analyses. A notable feature of this technique was its ability to differentiate between pairs of regioisomeric penems on the basis of their fragmentation patterns. These compounds could not be differentiated in the usual mass spectra.     

An Organoruthenium Anticancer Agent Shows Unexpected Target Selectivity For Plectin

Organometallic metal(arene) anticancer agents require ligand exchange for their anticancer activity and this is generally believed to confer low selectivity for potential cellular targets. However, using an integrated proteomics-based target-response profiling approach as a potent hypothesis-generating procedure, we found an unexpected target selectivity of a ruthenium(arene) pyridinecarbothioamide (plecstatin) for plectin, a scaffold protein and cytolinker, which was validated in a plectin knock-out model in vitro. Plectin targeting shows potential as a strategy to inhibit tumor invasiveness as shown in cultured tumor spheroids while oral administration of plecstatin-1 to mice reduces tumor growth more efficiently in the invasive B16 melanoma than in the CT26 colon tumor model.     

Nonpremixed flame control with microjets

The hydrodynamic control of buoyant nonpremixed flames is investigated by injecting high-momentum fluid through a central microjet. The resulting flame characteristics are mapped for jets of different strengths. The flame height decreases linearly with an increase in the microjet Froude number as the flow changes from a buoyancy-dominated to a momentum-controlled regime. The flame luminosity is reduced by injecting stronger microjets. The jets alter the flame structure by establishing strong entrainment of the ambient air from the quiescent surroundings. The introduction of an inert species as the microjet fluid has a similar qualitative effect as air. Microjet assistance is as effective as partial premixing for reducing the flame height and luminosity.
