A nonlocal multi-point singular fractional integro-differential problem of Lane–Emden type

In this paper, using Riemann–Liouville integral and Caputo derivative, we study a nonlinear singular integro-differential equation of Lane–Emden type with nonlocal multi-point integral conditions. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions by application of Banach contraction principle. Also, we prove an existence result using Schaefer fixed point theorem. Then, we present some examples to show the applicability of the main results.     

Applications of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of palm oil and oil from natural sources

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), which has received much interest in its use and further development for industrial applications, is a method that offers some advantages over conventional methods, especially for the palm oil industry. SC-CO? refers to supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) that uses carbon dioxide (CO?) as a solvent which is a nontoxic, inexpensive, nonflammable, and nonpolluting supercritical fluid solvent for the extraction of natural products. Almost 100% oil can be extracted and it is regarded as safe, with organic solvent-free extracts having superior organoleptic profiles. The palm oil industry is one of the major industries in Malaysia that provides a major contribution to the national income. Malaysia is the second largest palm oil and palm kernel oil producer in the World. This paper reviews advances in applications of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO?) extraction of oils from natural sources, in particular palm oil, minor constituents in palm oil, producing fractionated, refined, bleached, and deodorized palm oil, palm kernel oil and purified fatty acid fractions commendable for downstream uses as in toiletries and confectionaries.     

Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of non-natural modulators of quorum sensing in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Many species of bacteria employ a mechanism of intercellular communication known as quorum sensing which is mediated by small diffusible signalling molecules termed autoinducers. The most common class of autoinducer used by Gram-negative bacteria are N-acylated-L-homoserine lactones (AHLs). Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a clinically important bacterium which is known to use AHL-mediated quorum sensing systems to regulate a variety of processes associated with virulence. Thus the selective disruption of AHL-based quorum sensing represents a strategy to attenuate the pathogenicity of this bacterium. Herein we describe the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of a collection of structurally novel AHL mimics. A number of new compounds capable of modulating the LasR-dependent quorum sensing system of P. aeruginosa were identified, which could have value as molecular tools to study and manipulate this signalling pathway. Worthy of particular note, this research has delivered novel potent quorum sensing antagonists, which strongly inhibit the production of virulence factors in a wild type strain of this pathogenic bacterium.     

Towards the Efficiency of Pharmacologically Active Quinoid Compounds: Electron Transfer and Formation of Reactive Oxygen Species

In this review article, the structure, properties, stability and biological application of redox-active quinones are presented. A series of quinoid molecules is evaluated in terms of their ability to act as electron-transfer active compounds using cyclovoltammetric, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and spin-trapping techniques. Redox potentials and electron distribution of the intermediate radical anions are shown to be decisive factors for the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Mechanisms of ROS generation in dark by biological electron-transfer reaction or under photoexcitation have been proposed and experimentally verified. For site-specific damage of tumors, some quinone derivatives were covalently bound with the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH–RH or GnRH) that produces specific complexes with receptors on the surface of cancer cells. The properties of obtained conjugates to be bound with the different lines of cancer cells (αT3-1, M2R, LNCaP) were tested. EPR was used for the estimation of efficacy of ROS production by the conjugates in solution and in the complex with cancer cells. The toxicity of these conjugates as well as their stability in the stimulated oxidative stress were tested. The proposed approach could be useful in creating a new family of addressed anticancer drugs, including compounds for the treatment of tumors by photodynamic therapy.

A Priori Error Estimates for Obstacle Optimal Control Problem,Where the Obstacle Is the Control Itself

In this paper we deal with the convergence analysis of the finite element method for an elliptic penalized unilateral obstacle optimal control problem where the control and the obstacle coincide. Error estimates are established for both state and control variables. We apply a fixed point type iteration method to solve the discretized problem.To corroborate our error estimations and the efficiency of our algorithms, the convergence results and numerical experiments are illustrated by concrete examples.     

Irreducibility of the unitary principal series of p-adic {\widetilde{Sp(n)}}

Let F be a p-adic field. Let Sp(n) denote the sympletic group of rank n over F, and let ${\widetilde{Sp(n)}}$ be the unique (up to isomorphism) metaplectic double cover of Sp(n). We prove irreducibility of the unitary principal series of the group ${\widetilde{Sp(n)}}$ over F using theta correspondence.
