Single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate catalyzed by ytterbium powder

Zerovalent ytterbium (Yb) powder is firstly used as a catalyst in single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by carbon tetrachloride in N, N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide, respectively. Polymerization proceeds in a “living”/controlled way as evidenced by kinetic studies and chain extension results, producing well‐defined polymers with controlled degree of polymerization and narrow molecular weight distribution. The apparent activation energy of polymerization in DMF is accounted to be 36.2 kJ/mol, and the energy of equilibrium state is calculated to be 13.9 kJ/mol. An increase in the concentration of Yb(0) yields a higher monomer conversion. It is observed that polymerization rate experiments a rapid increase in the presence of more polar solvent water, and increasing in the content of H₂O results in an increase in the apparent rate constant of polymerization, and a decrease in the molecular weight distribution. The reaction rate and molecular weight increase along with the decrease of DMF content. The effect of Yb(0) powder content, different ligands and concentration of initiator on the polymerization is also investigated. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The practical synthesis procedure of substituted tetraphenylene derivatives involving the synthesis of a precursor for 4, 7-dunethoxyisobenzofuran and Diets-Alder addition of 4, 7-dimethoxyisobenzofuran generated in situ to 5, 6, 11,12-te-tradehydrodibenzo[a,e]cyclooctene, followed by a low valent titanium mediated deoxygenation to give 1,4, 11, 14-tetra-methoxy-dibenzo[b, n] tetraphenylene, which can be further demethyiated to the corresponding phenolic compound, which was acetylated to afford 1,4,11,14-tetraacetoxy-dibenzo-[ b, n] tetraphenylene.

Synthesis,Structure,and Ring-opening Metathesis Polymerization of η~5-Pentamethylcyclopentadienyl-(η~5-exo-tricyclo [5.2.1.0~(2,6)]deca-2,5,8-trien-6-yl) Iron

η5-Pentamethylcyclopentadienyl-(η5-exo-tricyclo[5.2.1.02,6]deca-2,5,8-trien-6-yl) iron(3) was synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MS, elemental analysis, IR, UV and X-ray diffraction analysis. Compound 3 was polymerized with ring-opening metathesis polymerization(ROMP) initiator (PCy3)2Cl2Ru=CHPh. 1H NMR and IR spectra revealed the presence of CH=CH units in the polymer and supported the ROMP mechanism.
