Chiral polymers containing a carbohydrate moiety: synthesis

This paper reports the preparation of poly(acetal-ethers) by two alternative synthetic pathways (alkaline and acid-catalyzed conditions). Polycondensations of methyl 2,3:4,6-di-O-salicylidene-alpha-D-mannopyranoside (3) (mixtures of endo-H and exo-H dioxolan-2-yl-diastereomers) with 1,4-dibromobutane (4) (method I a and I b) were performed in solvents (DMF, butyl acetate/DMF, DMSO) and were catalyzed by K2CO3/KI or KOH. A similar polymer (6) was formed by the reaction of methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside (1) and 1,4-bis(2-formylphenoxy)butane (7), catalyzed by p-toluenesulfonic acid (method II). Regardless of conversion or initial comonomer feed ratios, the composition of the polycondensates depended on the reaction conditions, leading to the formation of macrocyclic [1 + 1] (5) and [2 + 2] compounds, which were macromolecules with diverse molecular weights and optical properties. The regioselective polycondensation was examined by 1H NMR spectroscopy of selected polymers. In the case of 5-membered cyclic acetal units, mixtures of the endo-H and exo-H dioxolan-2-yl system, diastereomers were formed in the polymer chain. The macrocycles and linear oligomers were identified by NMR and electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Thermodynamically controlled reactions for making macrocycles as well as oligomers in the absence of templates are also discussed.     

Universal pion freeze-out in heavy-ion collisions

Based on an evaluation of data on pion interferometry and on particle yields at midrapidity, we propose a universal condition for thermal freeze-out of pions in heavy-ion collisions. We show that freeze-out occurs when the mean free path of pions lambda(f) reaches a value of about 1 fm, which is much smaller than the spatial extent of the system at freeze-out. This critical mean free path is independent of the centrality of the collision and beam energy from the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron to the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.     

Model-Independent Normalization Condition for Gamow Vectors

Two comments on the theory of Gamow states are presented. First, it is shown that Gamow states may be viewed as two resonating states which correspond to two different eigenproblems for the same real value of energy. Second, a universal normalization condition for all Gamow states is derived.

Geometric scaling for the total gamma(*)p cross section in the low x region

We observe that the saturation model of deep inelastic scattering predicts a geometric scaling of the total gamma(*)p cross section in the region of small Bjorken variable x. The geometric scaling in this case means that the cross section is a function of only one dimensionless variable tau = Q(2)R(2)(0)(x), where the function R(0)(x) decreases with decreasing x. We show that the experimental data from HERA in the region x<0.01 confirm the expectations of this scaling over a very broad region of Q(2). We suggest that the geometric scaling is more general than the saturation model.     

Local field theory on κ-Minkowski space, star products and noncommutative translations

We consider local field theory on κ-deformed Minkowski space which is an example of solvable Lie-algebraic noncommutative structure. Using integration formula over κ-Minkowski space and κ-deformed Fourier transform, we consider for deformed local fields the reality conditions as well as deformation of action functionals in standard Minkowski space. We present explicit formulas for two equivalent star products describing CBH quantization of field theory on κ-Minkowski space. We express also via star product technique the noncommutative translations in κ-Minkowski space by commutative translations in standard Minkowski space. Strange particles production and absorption in nuclei at high energies

The absorption of the secondary hadrons in nuclear matter is studied as a function of their flavour dependent inelastic cross section on nucleons. In particular the ratiosK ⁺/π⁺ andK ^?/π^? of particles produced in the proton-nucleus high energy interactions are examined and described in the very simple phenomenological model. The enhanced production ofK ⁺ mesons is explained by their relatively small interaction. The presence of the initial particle absorption is clearly demonstrated forx _F>0.5.     

Rapidly renewable silver amalgam annular band electrode for voltammetry and polarography

This work describes a novel type of working electrode for use in voltammetry and polarography — the renewable silver liquid amalgam film–modified silver solid amalgam annular band electrode (AgLAF–AgSAE). The electrode is produced by mechanically refreshing the silver liquid amalgam film (AgLAF) before each measurement. The main constituents of the electrode are: a specially constructed silver solid amalgam annular band electrode (AgSAE), two silicon O-rings, silver liquid amalgam and a polypropylene electrode body. Contaminants from the analyzed solution are removed and the AgSAE surface is covered with a thick layer of fresh amalgam while pulling the AgSAE into the sensor body. During movement in the reverse direction AgLAF is formed and homogenized. The time needed to refresh the film is less than 1 s. The electrode is characterized by excellent surface repeatability (～ 1%) and long-term stability (over ten thousand measurement cycles).
