Salt effects in capillary zone electrophoresis. IV. Resolution versus time and the effect of potassium phosphate and its concentration in the high ionic strength separation of sulphonamides.

The effects of potassium phosphate buffer and its concentration upon the capillary zone electrophoretic separation of 23 sulphonamides and a neutral marker were examined at pH 7. The resolution between the pairs was improved with the increased concentration of the buffer from 65 mM to 174 mM. Nineteen sulphonamides, a hydrolysis product and several unidentified minor components were baseline resolved in both 101 and 138 mM phosphate buffers. In 174 mM buffer all 21 ionised sulphonamides and the other compounds were separated. A simple relationship between the resolution of analyte pairs (Rs) and the square root of the mean analysis time for the pair (square root of tapp) was derived, but few of the pairs displayed this behaviour. For the majority of pairs of compounds, Joule heating appeared to cause a maximum in the Rs versus square root of tapp relationship, while non-ideality and shifts in ionisation with increasing salt concentration appeared dominant in other cases.

Covalently attached self‐assembly of ultrathin films from hydroxy‐containing porphyrin and diazoresin

Ultrathin films from 5,10,15,20‐tetrakis(4‐hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin (HPP) and diazoresin (DR) via a H bonding interaction were fabricated with the self‐assembly technique. Under UV irradiation, the H bonds between the layers will convert to covalent bonds following the decomposition of the diazonium group of DR. The stability of the film against the polar solvent and electrolyte aqueous solution increases a lot because of the formation of the covalent crosslinking structure. Thus, the photoelectric conversion property of DR/HPP film can be measured directly with a normal photoelectric chemical cell with potassium chloride as the electrolyte. The maximum of the anodic photocurrent was measured as 1.7 μ Å for an eight bilayer DR/HPP film deposited on an indium–tin oxide glass electrode. The action spectrum of the photocurrent generation indicated that the HPP contained in the film is responsible for the generation of the observed photocurrent. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Spectral-finite element method for solving two-dimensional vorticity equations

In this paper, we construct a spectral-finite element scheme for solving semi-periodical two-dimensional vorticity equations. The error between the genuine solution and approximate solution is estimated strictly. The numerical results show the advantages of such a method. The technique used in this paper can be easily generalized to three-dimensional problems.     

Toeplitz and composition operators on H2 (B n)

The composition operators with closed rangc on H²(B _n) are characterized, and the Fredholmness of products of Toeplitz and composition operators discussed. Moreover, using composition operators, the spectra of Toeplitz operators are studied. Further results on large sets of disjoint group‐divisible designs with block size three and type 2n41

Large sets of disjoint group‐divisible designs with block size three and type 2ⁿ4¹ were first studied by Schellenberg and Stinson because of their connection with perfect threshold schemes. It is known that such large sets can exist only for n ≡0 (mod 3) and do exist for all odd n ≡ (mod 3) and for even n=24m, where m odd ≥ 1. In this paper, we show that such large sets exist also for n=2^k(3m), where m odd≥ 1 and k≥ 5. To accomplish this, we present two quadrupling constructions and two tripling constructions for a special large set called ^*LS(2ⁿ). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Construction of the refractive index profiles for few-mode planar optical waveguides

We present a nondestructive technique to predict the refractive index profiles of isotropic planar waveguides, on which a thin gold film is deposited to as the cladding. The negative dielectric constant of the metal results in significant differences of effective indices between TE and TM modes. The two polarized modes and a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) with abundant information of the surface index can be used to construct the refractive index profiles of single-mode and two-mode waveguides at a fixed wavelength.
