A simultaneous masking procedure was used to derive four measures of frequency selectivity in the chinchilla. The first experiment measured critical masking ratios (CRs) at various signal frequencies. Estimates of the chinchillas' critical bandwidths derived from the CRs were much broader than comparable human estimates, indicating that the chinchilla may have inferior frequency selectivity. The second experiment measured critical bandwidths at 1, 2, and 4 kHz in a band-narrowing experiment. This technique yielded narrower estimates of critical bandwidth; however, chinchillas continued to exhibit poor frequency selectivity compared to man. The third experiment measured auditory-filter shape at 0.5, 1, and 2 kHz via rippled noise masking. Results of the rippled noise masking experiment indicate that auditory filters of humans and chinchillas are similar in terms of shape and bandwidth with chinchillas showing only slightly poorer frequency selectivity. The final experiment measured auditory filter shape at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz using notched noise masking. This experiment yielded auditory filter shapes and bandwidths similar to those derived from man. The discrepancy between the indirect estimates of frequency selectivity derived from CR and band-narrowing techniques and the direct estimates derived from rippled noise and notched noise masking are explained by taking into account the processing efficiency of the subjects.  相似文献

Click trains were generated with first- and second-order statistics following Kaernbach and Demany [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 104, 2298-2306 (1998)]. First-order intervals are between successive clicks, while second-order intervals are those between every other click. Click trains were generated with a repeating alternation of fixed and random intervals which produce a pitch at the reciprocal of the duration of the fixed interval. The intervals were then randomly shuffled and compared to the unshuffled, alternating click trains in pitch-strength comparison experiments. In almost all comparisons for the first-order interval stimuli, the shuffled-interval click trains had a stronger pitch strength than the unshuffled-interval click trains. The shuffled-interval click trains only produced stronger pitches for second-order interval stimuli when the click trains were unfiltered. Several experimental conditions and an analysis of runs of regular and random intervals in these click trains suggest that the auditory system is sensitive to runs of regular intervals in a stimulus that contains a mix of regular and random intervals. These results indicate that fine-structure regularity plays a more important role in pitch perception than randomness, and that the long-term autocorrelation function or spectra of these click trains are not good predictors of pitch strength.  相似文献

Insulin transport across the epithelial cell layer in the small intestine was studied using insulin/transferrin conjugates with and without the presence of P(MAA‐g‐EG) microparticles in contact with a co‐culture of Caco‐2/HT29‐MTX cells. The insulin/transferrin conjugate was shown to increase transport relative to pure insulin by a factor of 7, achieving an apparent permeability of 37 × 109 cm · s?1. The presence of P(MAA‐g‐EG) microparticles increased conjugate transport by a factor of 14 times relative to insulin, achieving an apparent permeability of 72.8 × 109 cm · s?1. The presence of the microparticles in solution was found to improve conjugate transport by nearly 100% with little to no change in cell monolayer integrity.

Chinchillas were trained to discriminate a cosine-phase harmonic tone complex (COS) from wideband noise (WBN) and tested in a stimulus generalization paradigm with tone complexes in which phase differed between frequency regions. In this split-phase condition, responses to complexes made of random-phase low frequencies, cosine-phase high frequencies were similar to responses to the COS-training stimulus. However, responses to complexes made of cosine-phase low frequencies, random-phase high frequencies were generally lower than their responses to the COS-training stimulus. When tested with sine-phase (SIN) and random-phase (RND) tone complexes, responses were large for SIN, but were small for RND. Chinchillas were then trained to discriminate infinitely-iterated rippled noise (IIRN) from WBN and tested with noises in which the spectral ripple differed between frequency regions. In this split-spectrum condition, responses were large to noises made of rippled-spectrum low frequencies, flat-spectrum high frequencies, whereas responses were generally lower to noises made of flat-spectrum low frequencies, rippled-spectrum high frequencies. The results suggest that chinchillas listen across all frequencies, but attend to high frequencies when discriminating COS from WBN and attend to low frequencies when discriminating IIRN from WBN.  相似文献

The structural and electronic transport properties of La1−x Ce x MnO3 (x=0.0–1.0) have been studied. All the samples exhibit orthorhombic crystal symmetry and the unit cell volume decreases with Ce doping. They also make a metal-insulator transition (MIT) and transition temperature increases with increase in Ce concentration up to 50% doping. The system La0.5Ce0.5MnO3 also exhibits MIT instead of charge-ordered state as observed in the hole doped systems of the same composition.  相似文献

Recent emphasis on the pilot scale production of cellulosic nanomaterials has increased interest in the effective use of these materials as reinforcements for polymer composites. An important, enabling step to realizing the potential of cellulosic nanomaterials in their applications is the materials processing of CNC/polymer composites through multiple routes, i.e. melt, solution, and aqueous processing methods. Therefore, the objective of this research is to characterize the viscoelastic behavior of aqueous nanocomposite suspensions containing cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and a water-soluble polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Specifically, small amplitude oscillatory shear measurements were performed on neat PVA solutions and CNC-loaded PVA suspensions. The experimental results indicated that the methods used in this study were able to produce high-quality nanocomposite suspensions at high CNC loadings, up to 67 wt% with respect to PVA. Additionally, the structure achieved in the nanocomposite suspensions was understood through component attributes and interactions. At CNC loadings near and less than the percolation threshold, a polymer mediated CNC network was present. At loadings well above the percolation threshold, a CNC network was present, indicated by limited molecular weight dependence of the storage modulus. Overall, these results provide increased fundamental understanding of CNC/PVA suspensions that can be leveraged to develop advanced aqueous processing methods for these materials.  相似文献
