Synthesis,spectroscopic evaluation,molecular modelling,thermal study and biological evaluation of manganese(II) complexes derived from bidentate N,O and N,S donor Schiff base ligands

Manganese(II) complexes having the general composition Mn(L)₂X₂ (where L = 3‐bromoacetophenone semicarbazone, 3‐bromoacetophenone thiosemicarbazone, 1‐tetralone semicarbazone, 1‐tetralone thiosemicarbazone, flavanone semicarbazone or flavanone thiosemicarbazone and X = Cl^? or ½SO₄^2?) were synthesized. All the complexes were characterized using elemental analyses, molar conductance and magnetic moment measurements, and mass, ¹H NMR, infrared, electron paramagnetic resonance and electronic spectral studies. The molar conductance of the complexes in dimethylsulfoxide lies in the range 10–20 Ω^?1 cm² mol^?1 indicating their non‐electrolytic nature. All the complexes show magnetic moments corresponding to five unpaired electrons. The possible geometries of the complexes were assigned on the basis of electron paramagnetic resonance, electronic and infrared spectral studies. Some of the synthesized ligands and their complexes were screened for their antifungal activities against fungi Macrophomina phaseolina, Botrytis cinerea and Phoma glomerata using the food poison technique and their antibacterial activities against Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris and Ralstonia solanacearum using the paper disc diffusion method. They showed appreciable activities.     

Valence bond calculations of vicinal proton coupling constants in cyclopropane

Vicinal proton couplings in cyclopropane have been calculated using Dirac-Van Vleck and variational methods in valence bond formalism. The couplings may be considered as taking place along a path comprising either three or four intervening bonds. Inclusion of all exchange integrals in the appropriate fragment models leads to a satisfactory ratio of J_cis/J_trans . In this respect valence bond results appear to be superior to those obtained using a molecular orbital approach. The present valence bond results on couplings in cyclopropane are not affected by the choice of models for bonding in cyclopropane, namely the Coulson-Moffitt model or the Walsh model.     

Synthesis and applications of a novel supramolecular polymer network with multiple H‐bonded melamine pendants and uracil crosslinkers

A conjugated main‐chain copolymer ( PBT ) consisting of bithiazole, dithieno[3,2‐b:2′,3′‐d]pyrroles (DTP), and pendent melamine units was synthesized by Stille polymerization, which can be hydrogen‐bonded (H‐bonded) with proper molar amounts of bi‐functional π‐conjugated crosslinker F (i.e., two uracil motifs covalently attached to a fluorene core through triple bonds symmetrically) to develop a novel supramolecular polymer network ( PBT/F ). The effects of multiple H‐bonds on light harvesting capabilities, HOMO levels, and photovoltaic properties of polymer PBT and H‐bonded polymer network PBT/F are investigated. The formation of supramolecular polymer network ( PBT/F ) between PBT and F was confirmed by FTIR and XRD measurements. Because of the stronger light absorption, lower HOMO level, and higher crystallinity of H‐bonded polymer network PBT/F , the solar cell device containing PBT/F showed better photovoltaic properties than that containing polymer PBT . The preliminary results show that the solar cell device containing 1:1 weight ratio of PBT/F and [6,6]‐phenyl C₇₁ butyric acid methyl ester (PC₇₁BM) offers the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) value of 0.86% with a short‐circuit current density (J_sc) of 4.97 mA/cm², an open circuit voltage (V_oc) of 0.55 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 31.5%. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effect of Grinding on the Low Temperature Photoluminescence of Certain Molecular Crystals

The wavelengths of the vibronic peaks of the low temperature photoluminescence of anthracene, phenanthrene, benzophenone and phthalic acid crystals do not change considerably, but their relative intensity changes significantly with grinding. The dislocations may change both the absorption coefficient and absorption spectra of the crystals, hence the photoluminescence emission may be affected by the grinding.     

A sensitive LC‐MS/MS method for the quantification of febuxostat in human plasma and its pharmacokinetic application

An improved, simple and highly sensitive LC‐MS/MS method has been developed and validated for quantification of febuxostat with 100 μL human plasma using febuxostat‐d₇ as an internal standard (IS) according to regulatory guidelines. The analyte and IS were extracted from human plasma via liquid–liquid extraction using diethyl ether. The chromatographic separation was achieved on a Zorbax C₁₈ column using a mixture of acetonitrile and 5 mm ammonium formate (60:40, v/v) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. The total run time was 5.0 min and the elution of febuxostat and IS occurred at 1.0 and 1.5 min, respectively. A linear response function was established for the range of concentrations 1–6000 ng/mL (r > 0.99). The precursor to product ion transitions monitored for febuxostat and IS were m/z 317.1 → 261.1 and 324.2 → 262.1, respectively. The intra‐ and inter‐day precisions (%RSD) were within 1.29–9.19 and 2.85–7.69%, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to pharmacokinetic studies in humans. Base Catalysed Condensation of Acetone with Uracil Derivatives: One Step Synthesis of Pyranopyrimidines

Novel and Efficient Oxidation of Benzyl Ethers to Benzaldehydes by DMSO/49% Aq. HBr

Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) oxidizes benzyl ethers into corresponding benzaldehydes at 110°C; the reaction is accelerated by 49% aq. HBr. The conditions work well for different aryl‐substituted benzyl ethers. This protocol is inert toward dialkyl ethers.
