Electrocatalytic Oxidation and Determination of Sulfite with a Novel Copper‐Cobalt Hexacyanoferrate Modified Carbon Paste Electrode

The electrocatalytic oxidation of sulfite has been studied at a stable electroactive thin film of copper‐cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CuCoHCF) hybrid electrodeposited on a carbon paste electrode (ECMCPE). A linear range of 5 μM to 5 mM of sulfite, with an experimental detection limit of 1 μM, was obtained using the cyclic voltammetric method. The oxidation of sulfite showed no significant fouling effect on the modified electrode surface at sulfite concentrations below 5 mM. The proposed modified electrode exhibited several attractive features, including simple preparation, fast response, good stability and repeatability, and could be applied to sulfite determination in real samples.     

Anomeric effect for a 2,5,7‐triazabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane derivative

A new member of the polyazapolycyclic family of compounds, namely N³,N⁶,2,5,7‐pentaphenyl‐2,5,7‐triazabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane‐3,6‐diamine xylene solvate, C₃₄H₃₁N₅·C₈H₁₀, was synthesized for the first time and the crystal structure is reported. There are no hydrogen bonds joining the molecules. All four chiral C atoms have the same absolute configurations. With regard to the four N—C—N groups, anomeric effects are observed to cause a reduction of C—N bond length and N‐atom pyramidality.     

Cloud point extraction-preconcentration and flame atomic absorption spectrometric determination of low levels of zinc in water and blood serum samples

A simple, sensitive and selective flotation method is described for the preconcentration and atomic absorption spectrometric determination of zinc ion in water and blood samples. At a solution pH of 5.2, 4-(2-pyridylazo-resorcinol) and Triton X-114 were used as hydrophobic ligand and non-ionic surfactant, respectively. The chemical variables affecting the preconcentration process were optimized. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the selective preconcentration and determination of as low zinc concentration as 6.5 μg L⁻¹ can be made. The proposed method was successfully applied to the preconcentration and low-level determination of zinc in different water and blood serum samples.      

Effect of Si substitution on electronic structure and magnetic properties of Heusler compounds Co2TiAl1−xSix

The electronic structures of Co-based Heusler compounds CoTiAl_1−xSi_x (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) are calculated by first-principles using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method within GGA and LSDA+U scheme. Particular emphasis was put on the role of the main group elements. In recent years, the GGA calculations of Co₂TiAl (x=0) and Co₂TiSi (x=1) indicated that they are half-metallic, but the electronic structure of this compound with x=0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 has not been reported yet, neither theoretically nor experimentally. The calculated results reveal that these are half-metallic and exhibit an energy gap in the minority spin state and also show 100% spin polarization. The substitution of Al by Si leads to an increase in the number of valence electrons, with increasing x. Our calculated results clearly show that with the Si doping, the lattice parameter linearly decreases; bulk modulus increases, and the total magnetic moment increases. The calculated energy gap in the minority spin state, using GGA scheme, was smaller than that obtained by using LSDA+U scheme. The outcomes of this research also show that the Co-3d DOS and therefore, the magnetic properties of compounds are dependent on electron concentration of the main group elements and it will affect the degree of p-d orbital occupation.     

Infrared spectra of acetylene–water complexes: C2D2–H2O,C2D2–HDO,and C2D2–D2O

Infrared spectra of C₂D₂–water complexes are studied in the 4.1 μm region of the C₂D₂ ν₃ fundamental band using a tunable diode laser source to probe a pulsed supersonic slit jet. Relatively large vibrational red shifts (?27.7 to ?28.0 cm^?1) are observed which are more easily interpretable than for the analogous C₂H₂ vibration thanks to the absence of Fermi resonance effects for C₂D₂. Noticeable homogeneous line broadening leads to estimates of upper state predissociation lifetimes of about 0.5, 0.9 and 1.1 ns for C₂D₂–H₂O, –HDO, and –D₂O, respectively. Transitions involving K_a = 0 and 1 levels are observed for C₂D₂–HDO, but there is a puzzling absence of K_a = 1 for C₂D₂–H₂O and C₂D₂–D₂O.     

Solvent-Free Aminoalkylation of Phenols and Indoles Assisted by Microwave Irradiation

Summary.  Phenols and indoles were aminoalkylated in a solvent-free and environmentally friendly Mannich reaction on acidic alumina assisted by microwave irradiation in good overall yields. Received November 10, 2000. Accepted December 6, 2000     

Electrochemical properties of modified carbon paste electrodes containing some amino derivatives of 9,10-anthraquinone

The preparation and aqueous electrochemistry of carbon paste electrodes modified by some amino-substituted 9,10-anthraquinones are reported. In all cases, the reduction processes studied by cyclic voltammetry reveal a quasi-reversible behavior. The half-wave potentials were calculated as a function of the solution pH and from the resulting potential-pH plots the formal potentials and pK _a ^′ values of different redox and acid-base couples involved at various pH ranges were evaluated. The diffusion coefficients of different anthraquinone derivatives used in paraffin oil were calculated by chronoamperometry. Received: 3 May 1999 / Accepted: 15 November 1999     

Highly selective and sensitive copper(II) membrane coated graphite electrode based on a recently synthesized Schiff’s base

A PVC membrane electrode based on bis-2-thiophenal propanediamine (TPDA) coated directly on graphite is described. The electrode exhibits a Nernstian response for Cu²⁺ over a very wide concentration range (1.0×10⁻¹ to 6.0×10⁻⁸ M) with a detection limit of 3.0×10⁻⁸ M (2.56 ng ml⁻¹). It has a fast response time and can be used for at least 2 months without any major deviation. The proposed sensor revealed very good selectivities for Cu²⁺ over a wide variety of other metal ions and could be used in the pH range of 3.0–7.0. It was successfully used for direct determination of copper in black tea and as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of copper ion.
