Solvothermal synthesis of large surface area zirconia

The reaction of zirconium n-propoxide in glycol at 300°C yielded microcrystalline tetragonal zirconia (ZrO₂). The crystallite size of the product depended on the carbon number of the glycol and increased in the following order (carbon number of glycol): 2<6<4, which suggested that the heterolytic cleavage of O-C bond of gylcoxide formed by transesterification is the prime factor for the formation of the product. In toluene, zirconium isopropoxide also gave tetragonal zirconia at 300°C, and zirconium tert-butoxide decomposed at 200°C yielding amorphous zirconia, while zirconium n-propoxide was stable at 300°C. These results suggest that the reaction in toluene depends on the structure of the alkyl group of the alkoxides. Thus-obtained tetragonal zirconias maintained large surface areas (90–160 m²/g) even after calcination at 500°C.     

Synthetic studies on cyathins: enantioselective total synthesis of (+)-allocyathin B2

[reaction: see text] The enantioselective total synthesis of (+)-allocyathin B(2) has been achieved. Our approach features a convergent enantioselective construction of the 5-6-7 tricyclic core system using the originally developed chiral building blocks via asymmetric catalysis, the intramolecular aldol reaction in high yield, successful samarium diiodide-mediated ring expansion, and a newly developed double-bond installation method.     

Efficient synthesis and hydrolysis of cyclic oxalate esters of glycols

Based on the mechanism postulated for the formation of the cyclic carbonates 3 in the reactions of glycols 1 with oxalyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine, we present here three efficient syntheses of the cyclic oxalates 2 of various glycols 1 by controlling the formation of 3: replacement of the base by pyridine markedly diminishes yields of 3 in all reactions, realizing dramatic reversals of the product ratios in the reactions with the (R*,R*)-compounds 1g-i,q,r and pinacol (1k); although considerable amounts of the oxalate polymers are formed in the reactions with some (R*,S*)-glycols, this drawback can be removed by the use of 2,4,6-collidine instead of pyridine; 1,1'-oxalyldiimidazole is useful for the synthesis of two selected cyclic oxalates 2e,f. The cyclic oxalates 2 other than trisubstituted and tetrasubstituted ones were found to be very reactive: kinetic studies on the hydrolysis of 1,4-dioxane-2,3-dione (2a) as well as its mono- and some selected 5,6-disubstituted derivatives 2 have revealed that they undergo hydrolysis 260-1500 times more rapidly than diethyl oxalate (12) in acetate buffer-acetonitrile (pH 5.69) at 25 degrees C. Although the cyclic oxalate 21 from cis-1,2-cyclopentanediol (11) was 1.5 times more reactive than 2a, it has been shown with other substrates that increasing number of the alkyl substituents decreases the rate of hydrolysis. On the contrary, the phenyl group was found to have somewhat accelerative effect.     

Synthetic studies on carbapenem antibiotics from penicillins. IV. Stereoselective kinetic protonation of a chiral azetidinone enolate

A stereoselective kinetic protonation of the azetidinone enolate $\text{B}$ was studied and an efficient synthesis of$\text{2}$(cis) was achieved via aldol reaction of $\text{5}$ with acetone followed by the kinetic protonation with Ph₃SnH as proton source.     

Absolute stereochemistry of citrinadins a and B from marine-derived fungus

[Structure: see text]. Citrinadin A (2) is a pentacyclic indolinone alkaloid isolated from the cultured broth of a fungus, Penicillium citrinum, which was separated from a marine red alga. The absolute stereochemistry of the pentacyclic core in 2 and its new congener, citrinadin B (1), was elucidated by analysis of the ROESY spectrum for the chlorohydrin derivative (3) of 1 as well as comparison of the electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra for 1 and 2 with those of known spirooxiindole alkaloids. On the other hand, the absolute configuration at C-21 bearing an epoxide ring was assigned as S by comparison of the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of 1 with those of model compounds 2S- and 2R-2,3-epoxy-3,3-dimethyl-1-phenylpropan-1-one (4a and 4b, respectively).     

Synthesis,crystal structure and charge transport characteristics of stable peri-tetracene analogues

peri-Acenes have shown great potential for use as functional materials because of their open-shell singlet biradical character. However, only a limited number of peri-acene derivatives larger than peri-tetracene have been synthesized to date, presumably owing to the low stability of the target compounds in addition to the complicated synthesis scheme. Here, a very simple synthesis route for the tetrabenzo[a,f,j,o]perylene (TBP) structure enables the development of highly stable peri-tetracene analogues. Despite a high degree of singlet biradical character, the compounds with four substituents at the zigzag edge show a remarkable stability in solution under ambient conditions, which is better than that of acene derivatives with a closed-shell electronic configuration. The crystal structures of the TBP derivatives were obtained for the first time; these are valuable to understand the relationship between the structure and biradical character of peri-acenes. The application of peri-acenes in electronic devices should also be investigated. Therefore, the semiconducting properties of the TBP derivative were investigated by fabricating the field-effect transistors.

Highly stable peri-tetracene analogues with a high degree of singlet biradical character were synthesized in a very simple route, and their crystal structures and semiconducting properties were investigated.     

Rapid oligosaccharide synthesis using a fluorous protective group

The Bfp-OH, a novel fluorous protecting reagent, was able to be easily prepared. The Bfp group was readily introduced to a carbohydrate, removed in high yield, and recyclable after cleavage. The use of the Bfp group made it possible to synthesize a pentasaccharide by minimal column chromatography purification. Each synthetic intermediate was able to be easily purified only by simple fluorous-organic solvent extraction and monitored by TLC, NMR, and MS.     

Conformation of poly(<Emphasis Type="SmallCaps">l</Emphasis>-glutamic acid) in bipolar amphiphiles with alkyl ammonium cations of different hydrophobicity

The conformation of the sodium salt of poly(l-glutamic acid) (P(Glu)) in solutions of the cationic bipolar amphiphile 1, 20-isosanediylbis(alkylammonium chloride) (C ₂₀(RA) ₂) with different alkyl head groups as a function of amphiphile concentration was investigated using circular dichroism (CD). RA included methylammonium (MA), ethylammonium (EA), propylammonium (PA), butylammonium (BA), and pentylammonium (PeA) cationic groups. The CD spectrum of each C ₂₀(RA) ₂ had a double minima corresponding to the a-helix of P(Glu), which was replaced by CD spectra with a single minimum at wavelengths larger than 222 nm as concentration increased. These changes in the CD spectrum were ascribed to the conformational change from random coil to a-helix and to aggregates of helices. In C ₂₀(EA) ₂ solutions, a step-like change in the CD intensity was observed at 222 nm as a function of the ratio of C ₂₀(RA) ₂ to P(Glu). At the step, the CD spectrum of the complete a-helix was observed. At 10–35 °C, an a-helix was induced in P(Glu) in the order: C ₂₀(EA) ₂>C ₂₀(MA) ₂>C ₂₀(PA) ₂>C ₂₀(BA) ₂>C ₂₀(PeA) ₂. This order was ascribed to the best fit of ethylammonium to the P(Glu) side chain.     

Observation and analysis of single DNA nano-kinetics by pin-fiber video scope

The nano-kinetic movement of a single DNA molecule was observed and analyzed by a newly developed video-microscope system with an optical fiber, called a pin-fiber video scope. A single lambda-DNA molecule was put in focus using fiber-illumination, and the stretching and shrinking motion was measured. The molecule's kinetics were analyzed by numerical calculations and are discussed. A photocleavage phenomenon of DNA molecules was also visualized by the pin-fiber video scope. The new video-microscope system has the potential to observe and analyze the nano-kinetics of a single molecule.     

Uniaxial alignment of the smallest diamagnetic susceptibility axis using time-dependent magnetic fields

A diamagnetic particle with magnetic susceptibilities chi3 < chi2 = chi1 < 0 was subjected to a rotating magnetic field to obtain an alignment of the chi3 axis (the smallest susceptibility axis) in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the rotating magnetic field. A polymer short fiber, whose fiber axis coincides with the chi3 axis, was suspended in a fluid with the same density, and then a rotating magnetic field generated by a rotation of a pair of permanent magnets was applied. The fiber axis, rotating following the applied field, finally ended up with an alignment perpendicular to the plane of the rotating magnetic field. The experimental data on the time course of the alignment was in good agreement with the numerical calculation based on the equation of rotation.
