Tigloylshikonin, a new minor Shikonin derivative, from the roots and the commercial root extract of lithospermum erythrorhizon

Tigloylshikonin, a new shikonin derivative esterified with tiglic acid ((E)-2-methylbut-2-enoic acid), was isolated as a minor pigment from a food colorant "Shikon color," a commercial root extract from Lithospermum erythrorhizon SIEBOLD et ZUCCARINI. The structure of tigloylshikonin was elucidated using (1)H, (13)C, the difference nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE), and 2D NMR techniques. Its stereochemistry was determined by chiral-phase HPLC analysis. Tigloylshikonin was also found in the roots of L. erythrorhizon, which indicated that this new shikonin derivative is a typical component of naphthoquinone pigments in the roots of L. erythrorhizon.     

Temperature dependent dendritic domain shapes in Langmuir monolayers of tetradecanoyl N-ethanolamide at the air-water interface

The effect of temperature on the surface phase behavior of tetradecanoyl N-ethanolamide (NHEA-14) in Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface has been investigated by film balance and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). It has been observed that dendritic domains are formed in the coexistence region between liquid-expanded (LE) and liquid-condensed (LC) phases at different temperatures. At 10 and 15°C, the domains are four-armed dendrites having wide arms which have a tendency to be fractal while growing in size. At 20°C, five-armed dendritic domains are formed. At a temperature higher than 20°C, the domains are mainly six-armed dendrites having very narrow and sharp arms. The formation of dendritic domains should be due to the presence of interfacial hydrogen bonding among the head groups of the amphiphile. Increased dehydration of the head groups with an increase in the temperature should be responsible for the temperature dependency of the dendritic domain shapes in the monolayers of NHEA-14.     

Fluorous solvent for cell culture

Incubation of mouse melanoma B16 cells in fluorous solvents with low boiling point such as perfluoromethylcyclohexane, 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol, ethylpentafluoropropionate resulted in cell death. However, cells lived up to 2 days in fluorous alcohols such as 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoro-1-pentanol and 3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,6-nonafluoro-1-hexanol with relatively higher fluorine content. Remarkably, cells survived deprived of nutrition up to 4 days when incubated in 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,6-undecafluoro-1-hexanol or in 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7-dodecafluoroheptanol that have the most number of fluorine atoms (11 and 12, respectively) among the perfluoroalkyl alcohols used, and with boiling points of 128 °C and 169 °C, respectively.     

Kinetic study of proton-transfer reactions of phenylnitromethanes. Implication for the origin of nitroalkane anomaly

Measurements of rate constants and substituent effects for three important elementary steps of proton-transfer reactions of phenylnitromethane were reported. The Hammett ρ values for the deprotonation of ArCH(2)NO(2) with OH(-), protonation of ArCH═NO(2)(-) with H(2)O, and protonation of ArCH═NO(2)(-) with HCl were determined in aqueous MeOH at 25 °C. Comparison of these experimentally observed ρ values with those calculated at B3LYP/6-31G* revealed that aci-nitro species (ArCH═NO(2)H), which is formed on the O-protonation of ArCH═NO(2)(-), does not lie on the main route of the proton-transfer reaction. Analysis of the Br?nsted plot implies that the proton-transfer reaction of most XC(6)H(4)CH(2)NO(2) exhibits nitroalkane anomaly, but not for p-NO(2)C(6)H(4)CH(2)NO(2), and that the transition state charge imbalance is an origin of anomaly.     

Unexpected electron transfer in cryptochrome identified by time-resolved EPR spectroscopy

Subtle differences in the local sequence and conformation of amino acids can result in diversity and specificity in electron transfer (ET) in proteins, despite structural conservation of the redox partners. For individual ET steps, distance is not necessarily the decisive parameter; orientation and solvent accessibility of the ET partners, and thus the stabilization of the charge-separated states, contribute substantially.     

Changes in Hip and Knee Muscle Strength in Patients Following Total Hip Arthroplasty

Objective: To investigate changes in hip and knee muscle strength in patients before and after total hip arthroplasty (THA) in comparison with that in healthy adults. Methods: The study included 21 women who underwent unilateral THA (THA group) and 21 age-matched healthy women (healthy group). Maximal isometric strengths of hip flexors, extensors, and abductors, and knee extensors and flexors were measured before surgery and at 4 weeks and 6 months after surgery. Results: Before surgery, muscle strength on both sides, except for hip flexors on the uninvolved side, was significantly lower in the THA group than the corresponding muscle strength in the healthy group. Up to 6 months after THA, strength of all muscle groups on both sides was significantly improved compared with their preoperative status, although the knee extensor strength on the involved side temporarily worsened at 4 weeks. However, the strength of hip extensors and knee extensors on the involved side, and hip abductors on both sides in the THA group remained below that in the healthy group. Conclusions: Our results suggest that rehabilitation specialists should consider increasing the focus on the uninvolved side and encourage patients to continue strength training beyond 6 months after surgery.     

Optical Phase Conjugation in Polyesters with Cyanoazobenzene Units in the Side Chain

Efficient optical phase-conjugate (PC) signals in four kinds of novel polyester films containing cyanoazobenzene units in the side chain are reported. One of them can efficiently generate only the photoinduced anisotropy (PA) component of PC signal, while the other three films can simultaneously generate two types of PC signals, PA and holographic components. These polymers have good potential not only as a phase conjugator but also as a polarization-sensitive hologram-recording material.Presented at the International Commission for Optics Topical Meeting, Kyoto, 1994     

Studies on erosion of silicone rubber exposed to partial arc discharges

The effect of electrolyte conductivity on the partial arc discharge development between two electrolyte electrodes on a silicone rubber sheet surface was investigated. Tests were executed by placing the salt-waterlogged glass-filter paper on a silicone rubber sheet to simulate a polluted electrolyte layer, and partial arc discharges with a constant current value of 10 mA were observed. It was found that the formation of an arc channel and a temperature distribution on the sample surface varied with the electrolyte conductivity. In addition, the relation between the electrolyte conductivity and the weight loss due to the heat erosion of specimens was also investigated by a 3D morphological observation and a simulated calculation. The partial arc discharge did significantly not influence on the sample surface erosion under serious polluted conditions. In contrast, the severest erosion appeared under the light pollution with comparatively lower conductivity of the electrolyte electrodes.
