Isomorphisms of integral alternative loop rings

This paper first settles the “isomorphism problem” for alternative loop rings; namely, it is shown that a Moufang loop whose integral loop ring is alternative is determined up to isomorphism by that loop ring. Secondly, it is shown that every normalized automorphism of an alternative loop ringZ L is the product of an inner automorphism ofQ L and an authomorphism ofL.     

Capillary zone electrophoresis for analysis of phytochelatins and other thiol peptides in complex biological samples derivatized with monobromobimane

A new method to improve the analysis of phytochelatins and their precursors (cysteine, gamma-Glu-Cys, and glutathione) derivatized with monobromobimane (mBrB) in complex biological samples by capillary zone electrophoresis is described. The effects of the background electrolyte pH, concentration, and different organic additives (acetonitrile, methanol, and trifluoroethanol) on the separation were studied to achieve optimum resolution and number of theoretical plates of the analyzed compounds in the electropherograms. Optimum separation of the thiol peptides was obtained with 150 mM phosphate buffer at pH 1.60. Separation efficiency was improved when 2.5% v/v methanol was added to the background electrolyte. The electrophoretic conditions were 13 kV and capillary dimensions with 30 cm length from the inlet to the detector (38 cm total length) and 50 microm inner diameter. The injection was by pressure at 50 mbar for 17 s. Under these conditions, the separation between desglycyl-peptides and phytochelatins was also achieved. We also describe the optimum conditions for the derivatization of biological samples with mBrB to increase electrophoretic sensitivity and number of theoretical plates. The improved method was shown to be simple, reproducible, selective, and accurate in measuring thiol peptides in complex biological samples, the detection limit being 2.5 microM glutathione at a wavelength of 390 nm.     

Rearrangement of 3-methoxy substituted [2, 1]benzisoxazole- and naphth[2,3-c]isoxazolequinones in dimethyl sulfoxide solution

The reactions of the 3-methoxy-isoxazole quinones 1 and 9 in a highly polar solution of dimethyl sulfoxide have been studied. Quinones of type 2, 4/11, 5/12, 6 and 7/13 have been isolated; nmr measurements give a detailed insight into the reaction mechanism.     

Formation of a Tc(III)-adenosine diphosphate complex

A⁹⁹Tc-ADP complex was prepared when KTcO₄ was reduced in aquous medium by SnCl₂, Na₂S₂O₄, NaBH₄ or Zn in the presence of ADP in excess. The resulting solution was studied by chromatography and spectrophotometry. Electrochemical reduction and substitution on [Tc^III(tu)₆]³⁺ were investigated as alternative synthetic routes. The anionic Tc-ADP complex was isolated as a solid. Cerimetric titrations confirmed the oxidation state +3 for the central atom. IR and¹H-NMR data showed that the purine base is bonded to the Tc central atom but not the ribose moiety. No oxo groups seemed to be directly bonded to the Tc atom. The complex is rather stable in neutral solutions. However, it decomposes to pertechnetate and TcO₂ at extreme pH values.     

Selective hydrogenation and dehydrocyclization of 3-methyl-4-benzyl-2,6-diphenylpyridine

3-Methyl-4-benzyl-2,6-diphenylpiperidine was obtained by hydrogenation of 3-methyl-4-benzyl-2,6-diphenylpyridine in the presence of rhenium heptasulfide; this confirms the common character of the method of selective hydrogenation of aryl(aralkyl)-substituted pyridine bases to give similarly substituted piperidines. Dehydrocyclization of this pyridine base by heating with sulfur leads to 10-mercapto-1,3-diphenyl-2-azaanthracene, which was obtained under the same conditions from 1,2-diphenyl-1,2-bis(3-methyl-2,6-diphenyl-4-pyridyl)ethane.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 3, pp. 375–376, March, 1982.     

Defect concentration in Ti-substituted YIG from TG curves

The article discusses theory and experiment about the measurement of defect concentration in Ti-substituted yttrium iron garnet by means of thermogravimetry techniques. The two possible cases arising from oxygen interchange with atmosphere, oxygen vacancies and interstitial cations, may be analyzed quantitatively from the derived expressions. The possibility of another type of defects being present in the samples, not associated to oxygen evolution, is not excluded. Measurements were carried out in air and CO₂ for different Ti contents. The substitution tends to increase slightly the defect parameter θ in YIG, while a CO₂ reducing atmosphere is much more effective than the Ti substitution for increasing θ. Calculations for a given single-phased sample sintered in air show two possibilities: a deficit of one oxygen atom for every 2.5 unit cells of 96 atoms, or one excess cation for every 3.5 cells. Other samples show very similar results. The accuracy involved in the measurements is about 2–3%.     

Electrochemical sensing in microfluidic systems using electrogenerated chemiluminescence as a photonic reporter of redox reactions

This paper describes a microfluidics-based sensing system that relies on electrochemical detection and electrogenerated chemiluminescent (ECL) reporting. The important result is that the ECL reporting reaction is chemically decoupled from the electrochemical sensing reaction. That is, the electrochemical sensing reaction does not participate directly in the ECL process, but because electrochemical cells require charge balance, the sensing and ECL reactions are electrically coupled. This provides a convenient and sensitive means for direct photonic readout of electrochemical reactions that do not directly participate in an ECL reaction and thus broadens the spectrum of redox compounds that can be detected by ECL. The approach can be implemented in either a two-electrode or bipolar (single-electrode) configuration. By manipulating the placement and dimensions of the conductors, the photonic response can be enhanced. The system is used to electrochemically detect benzyl viologen present in solution and report its presence via Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) luminescence.     

Selective fluorescence quenching of 2,3-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]oct-2-ene by nucleotides

[reaction: see text] The fluorescence quenching of 2,3-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]oct-2-ene (DBO) by nucleotides has been studied. The quenching mechanism was analyzed on the basis of deuterium isotope effects, tendencies for exciplex formation, and the quenching efficiency in the presence of a molecular container (cucurbit[7]uril). Exciplex-induced quenching appears to prevail for adenosine, cytidine, and uridine, while hydrogen abstraction becomes competitive for thymidine and guanosine. Compared to other fluorescent probes, DBO responds very selectively to the type of nucleotide.     

New synthetic routes to cationic rhenium tricarbonyl bipyridine complexes with labile ligands

Triflate abstraction from the complex [Re(OTf)(CO)(3)(bipy)] (1) using the salt NaBAr'(4) (Ar' = 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) in dichloromethane solution in the presence of L = PPh(3), NCMe, NCPh, imines, ketones, Et(2)O, THF, MeOH, and MeI affords cationic complexes [Re(L)(CO)(3)(bipy)](+) as their BAr'(4)(-) salts. The new complexes have been characterized spectroscopically and, for [Re(eta(1)-O=C(Me)R)(CO)(3)(bipy)]BAr'(4) (R = CH(3), 6a; R = Ph, 6b), and [Re(THF)(CO)(3)(bipy)]BAr'(4) (9), also by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compared with conventional methodologies, the route reported here allows the coordination of a broader range of weakly coordinating ligands and requires considerably milder conditions. On the other hand, the reactions of lithium acetylides with [Re(THF)(CO)(3)(bipy)]BAr'(4) (9) can be used for the high-yield syntheses of rhenium alkynyls [Re(Ctbd1;CR)(CO)(3)(bipy)] (R = Ph, 12; R = SiMe(3), 13). Complex 9 was found to catalyze the aziridination of benzylideneaniline with ethyl diazoacetate.
