Solvents inducing oxidation of hydroxylamines

Hydroxylamines gradually undergo oxidation to their oximes on being dissolved in organic solvent (e.g. methanol). This phenomenon was followed by (1)H-NMR and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The oxidation rate was estimated from the peak area observed on the mass chromatogram at the protonated molecule or fragment ion on LC-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)-MS. The results showed that the oxidation rate of hydroxylamines depended on the solvent type.     

Effect of comonomer sorption on radiation-induced copolymer grafting onto polyethylene and EVA films in the vapor phase

Radiation-induced copolymer grafting of acenaphthylene and maleic anhydride onto polyethylene or EVA film in the vapor phase was carried out and the effect of comonomer sorption on the grafting was studied. When polyethylene film was used as a backbone polymer, the sorption of the binary monomers during the grafting increased linearly as the grafting reaction proceeded. The marked increase was probably caused by the formation of a grafted layer. Particularly, the sorption of maleic anhydride was brought about by the existence of a grafted layer. In grafting onto EVA film, the content of maleic anhddride in the grafted copolymer increased with the increasing content of vinyl acetate in EVA. Continuous measurements of sorption of the comonomers onto EVA and grafted EVA films were carried out by use of an electrobalance. The distinctive feature of the sorption was that the equilibrium sorption of acenaphthylene or maleic anhydride onto the grafted EVA film increased and the diffusion constants for both comonomers decreased markedly with increasing percentage of graft. The copolymer grafting was explained from these results by assuming that the monomer molecules are supplied to the propagating chain ends mostly through a sorbed state on the polymer film.     

A self-assembling protein template for constrained synthesis and patterning of nanoparticle arrays

Self-assembling biomolecules that form highly ordered structures have attracted interest as potential alternatives to conventional lithographic processes for patterning materials. Here, we introduce a general technique for patterning nanoparticle arrays using two-dimensional crystals of genetically modified hollow protein structures called chaperonins. Constrained chemical synthesis of transition metal nanoparticles is initiated using templates functionalized with polyhistidine sequences. These nanoparticles are ordered into arrays because the template-driven synthesis is constrained by the nanoscale structure of the crystallized protein. We anticipate that this system may be used to pattern different classes of nanoparticles based on the growing library of sequences shown to specifically bind or direct the growth of materials.     

Rate constant of the reaction of NO3 with CH2I2 measured with use of cavity ring-down spectroscopy

We have applied cavity ring-down spectroscopy to a kinetic study of the reaction of NO₃ with CH₂I₂ in 25–100 Torr of N₂ diluent at 298 K. The rate constant of reaction of NO₃ + CH₂I₂ is determined to be (4.0 ± 1.2) × 10⁻¹³ cm³ molecule⁻¹ s⁻¹ in 100 Torr of N₂ diluent at 298 K. The rate constant increases with increasing pressure of buffer gas below 100 Torr. The reaction of CH₂I₂ with NO₃ has the potential importance at nighttime in the atmosphere.     

Aryl-aryl coupling reaction using a novel and highly active palladium reagent prepared from Pd(OAc)2, 1,3-bis[diphenylphosphino]propane (DPPP), and Bu3P

A palladium-assisted coupling reaction of aryl triflate with arene was investigated, and a novel Pd reagent prepared from equimolar Pd(OAc)2, 1,3-Bis[diphenylphosphino]propane (DPPP), and Bu3P was developed. This method is useful for intramolecular biaryl coupling reactions, not only between aryl triflate and arene (triflate-amide), but also between aryl halide and arene (halo-amide).     

Synthesis of cycl[3.2.2]azine and benzo[g]cycl[3.2.2]azine derivatives by use of the [2 + 8] cycloaddition reaction of indolizines and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate

The reaction of 1-ethoxycarbonylmethylpyridinium bromides 5a-k with nitro ketene dithioacetal, 1,1-bis-(methylthio)-2-nitroethylene ( 2 ), in the presence of triethylamine in ethanol gave the desired ethyl 2-methyl-thioindolizine-3-carboxylates 3a-k in good yields, along with ethyl 2-methylthio-1-nitroindolizine-3-carboxyl-ates 4a-d . Deesterification of 3 using sodium hydroxide in methanol followed by treatment with polyphosphoric acid gave the corresponding 2-methylthioindolizines 5a-d in good yields. The desulfurization of 5 with Raney-nickel in ethanol occurs smoothly to give the 1,2,3-unsubstituted indolizines 6a-c (a , parent indolizine; b , 8-methylindolzine; c , 6,8-dimethylindolizine). Similarly, pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinoline ( 19 ) was also synthesized. These indolizine and pyrrolo[1,2-a]isoquinoline derivatives were allowed to react with dimethyl acetylene to give the corresponding cycl[3.2.2]azine and benzo[g]cycl[3.2.2]azine derivatives in good results.     

Polycyclic N-heterocyclic compounds. XLI. Synthesis of 4-substituted 6,7-dihydro-5H-pyrimido[5,4-d][1]benzazepines, 1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-4H-imidazo[1′,2′:1,6]pyrimido[5,4-d][1]benzazepines and their related compounds as a series of potential blood platelet aggregation inhibitors

As a series of polyheterocyclic compounds for exploitation as anti-platelet agents, tricyclic heterocyclic compounds, 4-substituted 6,7-dihydro-5H-pyrimido[5,4-d][1]benzazepines 3–6, 9, 12–14 , and 16–26 , having nitrogen, oxygen, or sulfur containing functional groups at the 4-position, were prepared. In addition, tetra-cyclic heterocyclic compounds, 3-methyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-4H-imidazo[1′,2′:1,6]pyrimido[5,4-d][1]benzaze-pinium chloride ( 7 ), 1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-4H-imidazo[1′,2′:1,6]pyrimido[5,4-d][1]benzazepines 10a-e , 2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H 5H-pyrimido[1′,2′:1,6]pyrimido[5,4-d][1]benzazepine ( 11 ), and 1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-4H-thiazolo-[3′,2′:1,6]pyrimido[5,4-d][1]benzazepinium chloride ( 15 ) via ring closure of 4-(hydroxyalkylamino)- 6, 9a-e , and 3c , and 4-(2-hydroxyethylthio)-6,7-dihydro-5H-pyrimido[5,4-d][1]benzazepine ( 14 ) with phosphoryl chloride or thionyl chloride, respectively, were also prepared. Their inhibitory activities against collagen-induced aggregation of rabbit blood platelets in vitro were investigated. Among them, compound 5 having a morpholino group at the 4-position on the tricyclic nucleus, which enhanced the activity more than 14-fold as compared with aspirin, was found to have the most satisfactory in inhibitory activity.     

A novel and efficient oxidative biaryl coupling reaction of phenol ether derivatives using a combination of hypervalent iodine(III) reagent and heteropoly acid

A novel and efficient oxidative biaryl coupling reaction of phenol ether derivatives using a combination of hypervalent iodine(III) reagent, phenyliodine(III) bis(trifluoroacetate) (PIFA), and heteropoly acid has been developed.     

Studies on the constituents of Lonicera species. XVII. New iridoid glycosides of the stems and leaves of Lonicera japonica THUNB

Four new iridoid glycosides, named L-phenylalaninosecologanin (1), 7-O-(4-beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy-3-methoxybenzoyl)secologanolic acid (2), 6'-O-(7alpha-hydroxyswerosyloxy)loganin (3) and (Z)-aldosecologanin (5), were isolated, together with a known one, newly named (E)-aldosecologanin (4), from the stems and leaves of Lonicera japonica. Their structures were established on the basis of chemical and spectral data.     

Kinetic energy decomposition scheme based on information theory

We proposed a novel kinetic energy decomposition analysis based on information theory. Since the Hirshfeld partitioning for electron densities can be formulated in terms of Kullback–Leibler information deficiency in information theory, a similar partitioning for kinetic energy densities was newly proposed. The numerical assessments confirm that the current kinetic energy decomposition scheme provides reasonable chemical pictures for ionic and covalent molecules, and can also estimate atomic energies using a correction with viral ratios.
