An analysis of modulated molecular beam mass spectrometry applied to coupled diffusion and chemical reaction

An analysis of modulated molecular beam mass spectrometry applied to linear systems, developed previously [H.-C. Chang and W.H. Weinberg, J. Chem. Phys. 66 (1977)], has been extended to include the important case of coupled mass transfer and chemical reaction. Three different cases have been considered explicitly, namely, (1) bulk diffusion and surface reaction, (2) bulk diffusion and bulk reaction, and (3) surface diffusion with reaction in a surface boundary zone. The possibility of the occurrence of stable chemical oscillations has been demonstrated for the case of bulk diffusion and surface reaction.

Microcionamides A and B, bioactive peptides from the philippine sponge Clathria (Thalysias) abietina

Microcionamides A (1) and B (2) have been isolated from the Philippine marine sponge Clathria (Thalysias) abietina. These new linear peptides are cyclized via a cystine moiety and have their C-terminus blocked by a 2-phenylethylenamine group. Their total structures, including absolute stereochemistry, were determined by a combination of spectral and chemical methods. Compound 1 was shown to slowly isomerize about the C-36/C-37 double bond when stored in DMSO. Microcionamides A (1) and B (2) exhibited significant cytotoxicity against the human breast tumor cells lines MCF-7 and SKBR-3 and displayed inhibitory activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H(37)Ra.     

Use of ion chromatography with post-column reaction for the measurement of tribromide to evaluate bromate levels in drinking water

A user-friendly ion chromatography method in conjunction with a post-column reaction (PCR) achieves practical quantitation limits for the oxyhalides bromate and chlorite of 0.05 μg/l and 0.10 μg/l, respectively. This level of measurement allows for the accurate assessment of bromate contributed to finished drinking waters that have been chlorinated using sodium hypochlorite. The target sensitivity of oxyhalides in the presence of other major ion species typically found in drinking water is achieved by PCR using excess bromide under acidic conditions to form a tribromide species that is detected by ultraviolet spectrometry. The method setup involves non-hazardous materials, as opposed to other recently developed methods that employ somewhat hazardous chemicals for generating the reaction necessary for the detection of bromate at sub-μg/l levels. No pretreatment of the samples is required, other than filtration and quenching of oxidant residual.
