The Substituent Effects of tert-Butyl Radical Addition to 2-Substituted Allyl Chlorides

The relative rates for the addition reactions of tert-butyl radical to 2-substituted ally chlorides I have een determined. The correlation of log k/k₀, vs. σ_m gives a ρ mvalue of 3.59 with correlation coefficient of 0.930. When the substituent CH₂Cl is excluded, correlation coefficient raises to 0.990 and ρ value becomes 3.39. The large p value and the deviation of relative rate of substituent CH₂C1 are discussed.     

SYNTHESIS OF MESOPOROUS POLY(STYRENE-co-MALEIC ANHYDRIDE)/SILICA HYBRID MATERIALS VIA A NONSURFACTANT-TEMPLATED SOL-GEL PROCESS*

Mesoporous poly (styrene-co-maleic anhydride)/silica hybrid materials have been prepared. The synthesis wasachieved by the HCl-catalyzed sol-gel reactions of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and styrene-maleic anhydride copolymerin the presence of 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) as a coupling agent and citric acid as a nonsurfactant template orpore-forming agent, followed by ethanol extraction. Characterization results from nitrogen sorption isotherms and powder X-ray diffraction indicate that polymer-modified mesoporous materials with large specific surface areas (e.g. 900 m~2/g) andpore volumes (e.g. 0.6 cm~3/g) could be prepared. As the citric acid concentration is increased, the specific surface areas, porevolumes and pore diameters of the hybrid materials increase.

The cover picture shows a typical building within the Campus of Xiamen University displaying Chen Jiageng (Tan Kah Kee)'s style. Just like many beautiful buildings designed and constructed by human, Nature “designs and constructs” a huge number of useful molecules with fascinating structures called natural products. Many natural products possess a fused six or seven‐membered carbocyclic unity. On page 315–322, the Huang's group disclosed a three‐step “[2+n]” annulation method for the construction of fused six and seven‐membered carbocyclic enimines and enones. The method starts from simple cyclic ketones and terminal olefinic amides, and relies on both the Suzuki coupling reaction and the olefin‐amide based Friedel‐Crafts type acylating reaction, a method developed by Huang and coworkers.

     

Factors Influencing the Course of the Macrocyclization of α,ω‐Diamines with Esters of α,ω‐Dicarboxylic Acids

The efficient synthesis of eight new macrocyclic amides (lactams) via reaction of diesters with diamines under normal dilution conditions is described. The role of intermolecular H‐bond formation and steric hindrance is discussed based on ¹H‐ and ¹⁵N‐NMR studies of appropriate model compounds. Principles for the optimal choice of esters that can be efficiently transformed into diamides have been developed.     

Synthesis of saccharidic polymer colloids via free radical mini‐emulsion polymerization

Polymer colloids based on 3‐O‐methacryloyl‐1,2:5,6‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐α‐D ‐glucofuranose (3‐MDG) and butyl acrylate (BA) were prepared via free radical mini‐emulsion polymerization. The kinetic and colloidal features of the copolymerization were investigated. The final particle size (D) of the sugar latexes is inversely proportional to the concentration of the anionic emulsifier (sodium dodecyl sulphate, SDS) and the non‐ionic one (alkyl polyglucoside, APG). It was also found that D is independent of the concentration of either the water‐soluble initiator (potassium persulfate, KPS), or the oil‐soluble initiator (2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile, AIBN). The rate of mini‐emulsion polymerization is lower in comparison with the conventional emulsion polymerization under the same conditions. The polymerization rate (R_p) and the total number of particles (N_p) are proportional to the 0.72th and 0.93th power of the SDS, and to the 1.40th and 2.22th of the APG concentration. Following reaction orders, 0.79/0.06 were obtained for R_p/N_p versus the concentration of KPS, and 0.22/?0.01 for AIBN, respectively. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

A novel oligothiophene derivative as a hole‐transport with emitting material for OLED

A novel oligothiophene derivative containing the triphenylamine moiety with high glass transition temperature (T_g; 135 °C), 5,5′‐{bis[4‐di(4‐thiophenyl)amino]phenyl}‐2,2′‐bithiophene (TTPA‐dimer) was synthesized by the dimerization of tris[4‐(2‐thienyl)phenyl]amine (TTPA) with a palladium catalysis. Some types of electroluminescent (EL) devices that use the amorphous material for a hole‐ and an electron‐transporting with an emitting layer were fabricated. These devices emitted a bright green‐yellowish light (λ_emi; around 510 nm) with a small full width at half maximum (FWHM) rather than that of Alq₃. The single layer EL device showed a maximum luminance of 221 cd/m² at 8 V (0.06 lm/W at 100 cd/m²). On the other hand, the double layer (TTPA‐dimer/Alq₃) EL device that used Alq₃ as the electron transport material was increased up to 10830 cd/m² at 12 V (0.89 lm/W at 300 cd/m²) and with a lower turn‐on voltage (3.2 V at 0.1 cd/m²) than other types of EL devices. Effect of Addition of Base on Ceria and Reactivity of CuO/CeO2 Catalysts for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

In this work, we have reported the influence of the addition of base (KOH) on the physicochemical property of ceria synthesized by alcohothermal process, and the alcohothermal mechanism was also put forward. Furthermore, the prepared CeO2 was used as the support to prepare CuO/CeO2 catalysts via the wet impregnation method. The samples were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and temperature-programmed reduction by H2 (H2-TPR). The catalytic properties of the CuO/CeO2 catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation were studied using a microreactor-GC system. The crystal size of CeO2-A was much smaller than that of CeO2-B, and the corresponding copper oxide catalysts exhibited higher catalytic activity than that of the CeO2-B-supported catalysts under the same reaction conditions. The alcohothermal mechanism indicated that KOH plays a key role in determining the physicochemical and catalytic properties of ceria-based materials.     

Quecksilber(II)‐chlorid‐ und ‐iodid‐Komplexe von Dithia‐ und Tetrathiakronenethern

Mercury(II) Chloride and Iodide Complexes of Dithia‐ and Tetrathiacrown Ethers The complexes [(HgCl₂)₂((ch)₂30S₄O₆)] ( 1 ), [HgCl₂(mn21S₂O₅)] ( 2 ), [HgCl₂(ch18S₂O₄)] ( 3 ) and [HgI(meb12S₂O₂)]₂[Hg₂I₆] ( 4 ) have been synthesized, characterized and their crystal structures were determined. In [(HgCl₂)₂((ch)₂30S₄O₆)] two HgCl₂ units are discretely bonded within the ligand cavity of the 30‐membered dichinoxaline‐tetrathia‐30‐crown‐10 ((ch)₂30S₄O₆) forming a binuclear complex. HgCl₂ forms 1 : 1 “in‐cavity” complexes with the 21‐membered maleonitrile‐dithia‐21‐crown‐7 (mn21S₂O₅) ligand and the 18‐membered chinoxaline‐dithia‐18‐crown‐6 (ch18S₂O₄) ligand, respectively. The 12‐membered 4‐methyl‐benzo‐dithia‐12‐crown‐4 (meb12S₂O₂) ligand gave with two equivalents HgI₂ the compound [HgI(meb12S₂O₂)]₂[Hg₂I₆]. In the cation [HgI(meb12S₂O₂)]⁺ meb12S₂O₂ forms with the cation HgI⁺ a half‐sandwich complex.     

Cordycedipeptide A, a new cyclodipeptide from the culture liquid of Cordyceps sinensis (Berk.) Sacc

A new cyclodipeptide named as cordycedipeptide A, a new natural compound and two known compound were isolated from the culture liquid of Cordyceps sinensis (BERK.) SACC. Their structures were elucidated as 3-acetamino-6-isobutyl-2,5-dioxopiperazine (1), 3-isopropyl-6-isobutyl-2,5-dioxopiperazine (2) and 3,6-di(4-hydroxy)benzyl-2,5-dioxopiperazine (3) by 1D and 2D-NMR techniques. The cytotoxic assay showed compound 1 had the cytotoxic activities to L-929, A375, and Hela.
