Two new side‐chain donor–acceptor (D‐A)‐based triphenylamine‐alt‐benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (TPA‐alt‐BDT) copolymers ( P1 and P2 ) with pendant benzothiadiazole (BT)/diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) in TPA unit were synthesized by Stille coupling polymerization. Their thermal, photophysical, electrochemical, blend film morphology and photovoltaic properties were investigated. Efficient bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells (PSCs) were obtained by solution process using both copolymers as donor materials and PC71BM as acceptor. The maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.17% with a highest open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.86V was observed in the P1 ‐based PSCs, while the maximum short‐circuit current (Jsc) of 10.77 mA cm?2 was exhibited in the P2 ‐based PSCs under the illumination of AM 1.5, 100 mW cm?2. The alternating binary donor units and pending acceptor groups played a significant role in tuning photovoltaic properties for this class of the side‐chain D–A‐based copolymers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four novel two‐dimensional (2D) donor–acceptor (D‐A) type copolymers with different conjugated side chains, P1 , P2 , P3 , and P4 (see Fig. 1 ), are designed and synthesized for the application as donor materials in polymer solar cells (PSCs). To the best of our knowledge, there were few reports to systematically study such 2D polymers with D‐A type main chains in this area. The optical energy band gaps are about 2.0 eV for P1 – P3 and 1.67 eV for P4 . PSC devices using P1 – P4 as donor and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester as acceptor in a weight ratio of 1:3 were fabricated and characterized to investigate the photovoltaic properties of the polymers. Under AM 1.5 G, 100 mA/cm2 illumination, a high open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.9 V was recorded for P3 ‐based device due to its low HOMO level, and moderate fill factor was obtained with the best value of 58.6% for P4 ‐based device, which may mainly be the result of the high hole mobility of the polymers (up to 1.82 × 10?3 cm2/V s). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel conjugated polymer, poly(thienylene‐vinylene‐thienylene) with cyano substituent ( CN‐PTVT ) was synthesized via Stille coupling for the application in air stable field‐effect transistor and polymer solar cell. The polymer was characterized by 1H NMR, elemental analysis, UV‐vis absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy, TGA, cyclic voltammetry and XRD analysis. CN‐PTVT exhibits a good thermal stability with 5% weight loss at 306 °C. The FET hole mobility of the polymer reached 5.9 × 10?3 cm2 V?1 s?1 with Ion/Ioff ratio of 4.9 × 104, which is one of the highest performance among the air‐stable amorphous polymers. The polymer solar cell based on CN‐PTVT as donor and PCBM as acceptor shows a relatively high open‐circuit voltage of 0.82 V and a power conversion efficiency of 0.3% under the illumination of AM1.5, 100 mW/cm2. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of three new low bandgap donor–acceptor–donor–acceptor/ (D–A–D–A/) polymers have been successfully synthesized based on the combination of isoindigo as the electron‐deficient acceptor and 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene as the electron‐rich donor, followed by CH‐arylation with different acceptors (4,7‐dibromo[c][1,2,5]‐(oxa, thia, and/or selena)diazole ( 4a‐c )). These polymers were used as donor materials for photovoltaic applications. All of the polymers are highly stable and show good solubility in chlorinated solvents. The highest power conversion efficiency of 1.6% was achieved in the bulk heterojunction photovoltaic device that consisted of poly ((E)?6‐(7‐(benzo‐[c][1,2,5]‐thiadiazol‐4‐yl)?2,3‐dihydrothieno‐[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxin‐5‐yl)?6′‐(2,3‐dihydrothieno‐[3,4‐b][1,4]‐dioxin‐5‐yl)?1,1′‐bis‐(2‐octyldodecyl)‐[3,3′‐biindolinylidene]‐2,2′‐dione) as the donor and PC61BM as the acceptor, with a short‐circuit current density (Jsc) of 8.10 mA/cm2, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.56 V and a fill factor of 35%, which indicates that these polymers are promising donors for polymer solar cell applications. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of new phenothiazine‐based donor–acceptor copolymers, P1 and P2, were synthesized via a Suzuki coupling reaction. The weight‐averaged molecular weights (Mw) of P1 and P2 were found to be 16,700 and 16,100, with polydispersity indices of 1.74 and 1.39, respectively. The UV–visible absorption spectra of the polymer thin films contained three strong absorption bands in the ranges 318–320 nm, 430–436 nm, and 527–568 nm. The absorption peaks at 320 and 430 nm originated mainly from the phenothiazine‐based monomer units, and the longer wavelength absorption band at 527–568 nm was attributed to the increased effective conjugation length of the polymer backbones. Solution‐processed field‐effect transistors fabricated with these polymers exhibited p‐type organic thin film transistor characteristics. The field‐effect mobilities of P1 and P2 were measured to be 1.0 × 10?4 and 7.5 × 10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1, respectively, with on/off ratios in the order of 104 for all polymers. A photovoltaic device in which a P2/PC71BM (1/3) blend film was used as the active layer exhibited an open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.70 V, a short‐circuit current (JSC) of 6.79 mA cm(2, a fill factor of 0.39, and a power conversion efficiency of 1.86% under AM 1.5 G (100 mW cm?2) illumination. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three simple structured D‐A copolymers, PBTBTz‐1 , PBTBTz‐2 , and PBTBTz‐3 , containing bithiophene (BT) donor unit and bithiazole (BTz) acceptor unit with different alkyl chain length were synthesized by the Pd‐catalyzed Stille‐coupling method. The copolymers were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, UV–vis absorption, electrochemical cyclic voltammetry, and photovoltaic measurements. The results indicate that the introduction of BTz unit to the polythiophene main chain effectively decreases highest occupied molecular orbital levels of the copolymers and increases the open circuit voltage (Voc) of polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on the copolymers as donor, and the alkyl chain length influences the photovoltaic properties of the polymers significantly. The PSCs based on PBTBTz‐2 and PBTBTz‐3 show higher Voc up to 0.77 and 0.81 V, respectively. The power conversion efficiency of the PSC based on PBTBTz‐2 :PC70BM = 1:1(w/w) reached 2.58% with short circuit current of 8.70 mA/cm2, under the illumination of AM1.5, 100 mW/cm2. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, donor–acceptor random polymers containing benzotriazole acceptor and bistriphenylamine and benzodithiophene donors, P1 and P2 , were successfully synthesized by Stille coupling polymerization. The effect of bistriphenylamine moiety and thiophene π‐conjugated linker on electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and optical behaviors of the polymers were investigated. Optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance of the polymers were examined under the illumination of AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm?2. The polymers were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV‐Vis‐NIR absorption spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography. HOMO/LUMO energy levels of P1 and P2 were calculated as ?5.47 eV/–3.41 eV and ?5.43 eV/–3.27 eV, respectively. Bulk heterojunction type solar cells were constructed using blends of the polymers (donor) and [6,6]‐phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) (acceptor). Photovoltaic studies showed that the highest power conversion efficiency of these photovoltaic devices were recorded as 3.50% with open circuit voltage; 0.79 V, short circuit current; 9.45 mA cm?2, fill factor; 0.53 for P1 :PC71BM (1:2, w/w) in 3% o‐dichlorobenzene (o‐DCB) solution and 3.15% with open circuit voltage; 0.75 V, short circuit current; 8.59 mA cm?2, fill factor; 0.49 for P2 :PC71BM (1:2, w/w) in 2% chlorobenzene (CB) solution. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random donor‐acceptor (D‐A) supramolecular comb polymers were formed when hydroxyl functionalized donor and acceptor small molecules based on Oligo(phenylenevinylene) (named OPVCN‐OH ) and Perylenebisimide (named UPBI‐PDP ), respectively, were complexed with Poly(4‐vinyl pyridine) (P4VP). A series of random D‐A supramolecular comb polymers were formed by varying the ratios of UPBI‐PDP and OPVCN‐OH with P4VP. A 100% P4VP‐donor polymer complex [ P4VP(OPV1.00 )] and a 100% P4VP‐acceptor polymer complex [ P4VP(UPBI1.00 )] were also synthesized and characterized. Complex formation was confirmed by FT‐IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Solid state structural studies carried out using small angle X‐ray scattering and wide angle X‐ray diffraction experiments revealed altered packing of the D and A molecules in the complexes. Transmission electron microscopy images showed lamellar structures in the < 10 nm scale for the P4VP(OPV1.00 ), P4VP(UPBI1.00 ), and mixed P4VP (D‐A) complexes. The effect of the nanoscopic D‐A self‐assembly on the bulk mobility of the materials was probed using SCLC measurements. The mixed D‐A random complexes exhibited ambipolar charge transport characteristics with higher values for the average bulk hole mobility estimate. P4VP(OPV0.25 + UPBI0.75) exhibited an average hole mobility in the order of 10?2cm2 V?1 s?1 and electron mobility 10?5cmV?1 s?1. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Two donor–acceptor conjugated polymers, PTSSO‐TT and PTSSO‐BDT, composed of acenaphtho[1,2‐c]thiophene ‐ S,S‐dioxide (TSSO) as a new electron acceptor and thienothiophene (TT) or benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b']dithiophene (BDT) as electron donors, were synthesized with Stille cross‐coupling reactions. The number‐averaged molecular weights (Mn) of PTSSO‐TT and PTSSO‐BDT were found to be 15100 and 26000 Da, with dispersity of 1.8 and 2.4, respectively. The band‐gap energies of PTSSO‐TT and PTSSO‐BDT are 1.56 and 1.59 eV, respectively. The HOMO levels of PTSSO‐TT and PTSSO‐BDT are ?5.4 and ?5.5 eV, respectively. These results indicate that the inclusion of TSSO accepting units into polymers is a very effective method for lowering their HOMO energy levels. The field‐effect mobilities of PTSSO‐TT and PTSSO‐BDT were determined to be 1.5 × 10?3 and 4.5 × 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1, respectively. A polymer solar cell device prepared with PTSSO‐TT as the active layer was found to exhibit a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.79% with an open circuit voltage of 0.71 V under AM 1.5 G (100 mW cm?2) conditions. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Besides the donor–acceptor (D–A) type, acceptor–acceptor (A–A) polymers are another class of important alternative conjugated copolymers, but have been less studied in the past. In this study, two kinds of A–A polymers, P1 and P2 , have been designed and synthesized based on diketopyrrolopyrrole in combination with the second electron‐deficient unit, perylenediimide or thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione. UV–vis absorption spectroscopy revealed that these two kinds of polymers have a band gap of 1.28–1.33 eV. Their highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels are around ?5.6 and ?4.0 eV for P1 polymers, whereas ?5.4 and ?3.7 eV for P2 polymers, respectively. Density functional theory study disclosed that P1 backbone is in a vastly twisting state, whereas that of P2 is completely planar. Furthermore, organic field‐effect transistor devices were fabricated using these two kinds of polymers as the active material. Of interest, the devices based on P1 polymers displayed n‐channel behaviors with an electron mobility in the order of 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1. In contrast, the P2 ‐based devices exhibited only p‐channel charge transportation characteristics with a hole mobility in the order of 10?3 cm2 V?1 s?1. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Two donor–acceptor (D‐A) conjugated polymers, PQx and PphQx, composed of alkylthienyl‐substituted benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b']dithiophene (BDTT) as the electron donor and the new electron acceptors quinoxaline (Qx) or phenanthrenequinoxaline (phQx), were synthesized with Stille cross‐coupling reactions. The number‐averaged molecular weights (Mn) of PQx and PphQx were found to be 25.1 and 23.2 kDa, respectively, with a dispersity of 2.6. The band‐gap energies of PQx and PphQx are 1.82 and 1.75 eV, respectively. These results indicate that, because phQx units have highly planar structures, their inclusion in D‐A polymers will be a very effective method for increasing the polymers' effective conjugation lengths. The hole mobilities of PQx and PphQx were determined to be 5.0 × 10?5 and 2.2 × 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1, respectively. A polymer solar cell device prepared with PphQx as the active layer was found to exhibit a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.03%; thus, the introduction of phQx units enhanced both the short circuit current density and PCE of the device. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An alternating donor‐acceptor copolymer based on a benzotriazole and benzodithiophene was synthesized and selenophene was incorporated as π‐bridge. The photovoltaic and optical properties of polymer were studied. The copolymer showed medium band gap and dual absorption peaks in UV‐Vis absorption spectra. Photovoltaic properties of P‐SBTBDT were performed by conventional device structure. The OSC device based on polymer: PC71BM (1:1, w/w) exhibited the best PCE of 3.60% with a Voc of 0.67 V, a Jsc of 8.95 mA/cm2, and a FF of 60%. This finding was supported with morphological data and space charge limited current (SCLC) mobilities. The hole mobility of the copolymer was estimated through SCLC model. Although surface roughness of the active layer is really high, mobility of a polymer was found as 7.46 × 10?3 cm2/Vs for optimized device that can be attributed to Se?Se interactions due to the larger, more‐polarizable Se atom. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two well‐defined alternating π‐conjugated polymers containing a soluble electroactive benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]difuran (BDF) chromophore, poly(BDF‐(9‐phenylcarbazole)) (PBDFC), and poly(BDF‐benzothiadiazole) (PBDFBTD) were synthesized via Sonogashira copolymerizations. Their optical, electrochemical, and field‐effect charge transport properties were characterized and compared with those of the corresponding homopolymer PBDF and random copolymers of the same overall composition. All these polymers cover broad optical absorption ranges from 250 to 750 nm with narrow optical band gaps of 1.78–2.35 eV. Both PBDF and PBDFBTD show ambipolar redox properties with HOMO levels of ?5.38 and ?5.09 eV, respectively. The field‐effect mobility of holes varies from 2.9 × 10?8 cm2 V?1 s?1 in PBDF to 1.0 × 10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1 in PBDFBTD. Bulk heterojunction solar cell devices were fabricated using the polymers as the electron donor and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester as the electron acceptor, leading to power conversion efficiencies of 0.24–0.57% under air mass 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm?2). These results indicate that their band gaps, molecular electronic energy levels, charge mobilities, and molecular weights are readily tuned by copolymerizing the BDF core with different π‐conjugated units. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis, properties, and optoelectronic device applications of four new bis‐[4‐(2‐ethyl‐hexyloxy)‐phenyl]quinoxaline( Qx(EHP) )‐based donor‐acceptor conjugated copolymers are reported, in which the donors are thiophene( T ), dithiophene( DT ), dioctylfluorene( FO ), and didecyloxyphenylene( OC10 ). The optical band gaps (Eg) of PThQx(EHP) , PDTQ(EHP) , POC10DTQ(EHP) , and PFODTQ(EHP) estimated from the onset absorption are 1.57, 1.65, 1.77, and 1.92 eV, respectively. The smallest Eg of PThQx(EHP) among the four copolymers is attributed to the balanced donor/acceptor ratio and backbone coplanarity, leading to a strong intramolecular charge transfer. The hole mobilities obtained from the thin film transistor (TFT) devices of PThQx(EHP) , PDTQ(EHP) , POC10DTQ(EHP) , and PFODTQ(EHP) are 2.52 × 10?4, 4.50 × 10?3, 4.72 × 10?5, and 9.31 × 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1, respectively, with the on‐off ratios of 2.00 × 104, 1.89 × 103, 4.07 × 103, and 2.30 × 104. Polymer solar cell based on the polymer blends of PFODTQ(EHP) , PThQx(EHP) , POC10DTQ(EHP) , and PDTQ(EHP) with [6, 6]‐phenyl C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) under illumination of AM1.5 (100 mW cm?2) solar simulator exhibit power conversion efficiencies of 1.75, 0.92, 0.79, and 0.43%, respectively. The donor/acceptor strength, molecular weight, miscibility, and energy level lead to the difference on the TFT or solar cell characteristics. The present study suggests that the prepared bis[4‐(2‐ethyl‐hexyloxy)‐phenyl]quinoxaline donor‐acceptor conjugated copolymers would have promising applications on electronic device applications. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four ethynylene‐containing donor‐acceptor alternating conjugated polymers P1 – P4 with 2,5‐bis(dodecyloxy) substituted phenylene or carbazole as the donor unit and benzothiadiazole (BTZ) as the acceptor unit were synthesized and used as donor polymers in bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells. The optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of these four polymers with the ethylene unit located at different positions of the polymer chains were systematically investigated. Our results demonstrated that absorption spectra and the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of polymers could be tuned by varying the position of the ethynylene unit in the polymer chains. Photovoltaic devices based on polymer/PC71BM blend films spin coated from chloroform and dichlorobenzene solutions were investigated. For all four polymers, open circuit voltages (Voc) higher than 0.8 V were obtained. P4 , with ethynylene unit between BTZ and thiophene, shows the best performance among these four polymers, with a Voc of 0.94 V, a Jsc of 4.2 mA/cm2, an FF of 0.40, and a PCE of 1.6%. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of soluble donor‐acceptor conjugated polymers comprising of phenothiazine donor and various benzodiazole acceptors (i.e., benzothiadiazole, benzoselenodiazole, and benzoxadiazole) sandwiched between hexyl‐thiophene linkers were designed, synthesized, and used for the fabrication of polymer solar cells (PSC). The effects of the benzodiazole acceptors on the thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of these low‐bandgap (LBG) polymers were investigated. These LBG polymers possessed large molecular weight (Mn) in the range of 3.85?5.13 × 104 with high thermal decomposition temperatures, which demonstrated broad absorption in the region of 300?750 nm with optical bandgaps of 1.80?1.93 eV. Both the HOMO energy level (?5.38 to ?5.47 eV) and LUMO energy level (?3.47 to ?3.60 eV) of the LBG polymers were within the desirable range of ideal energy level. Under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 white‐light illumination, bulk heterojunction PSC devices containing an active layer of electron donor polymers mixed with electron acceptor [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) in different weight ratios were investigated. The best performance of the PSC device was obtained by using polymer PP6DHTBT as an electron donor and PC71BM as an acceptor in the weight ratio of 1:4, and a power conversion efficiency value of 1.20%, an open‐circuit voltage (Voc) value of 0.75 V, a short‐circuit current (Jsc) value of 4.60 mA/cm2, and a fill factor (FF) value of 35.0% were achieved. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A set of three donor‐acceptor conjugated (D‐A) copolymers were designed and synthesized via Stille cross‐coupling reactions with the aim of modulating the optical and electronic properties of a newly emerged naphtho[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene donor unit for polymer solar cell (PSCs) applications. The PTNDTT‐BT , PTNDTT‐BTz , and PTNDTT‐DPP polymers incorporated naphtho[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene ( NDT ) as the donor and 2,2′‐bithiazole ( BTz ), benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole ( BT ), and pyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐1,4(2H,5H)‐dione ( DPP ), as the acceptor units. A number of experimental techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, X‐ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy were used to determine the thermal, optical, electrochemical, and morphological properties of the copolymers. By introducing acceptors of varying electron withdrawing strengths, the optical band gaps of these copolymers were effectively tuned between 1.58 and 1.9 eV and their HOMO and LUMO energy levels were varied between ?5.14 to ?5.26 eV and ?3.13 to ?3.5 eV, respectively. The spin‐coated polymer thin film exhibited p‐channel field‐effect transistor properties with hole mobilities of 2.73 × 10?3 to 7.9 × 10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1. Initial bulk‐heterojunction PSCs fabricated using the copolymers as electron donor materials and [6,6]‐phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the acceptor resulted in power conversion efficiencies in the range of 0.67–1.67%. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new benzodithiophene (BDT)‐based polymer, poly(4,8‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene vinylene) (PBDTV), was synthesized by Pd‐catalyzed Stille‐coupling method. A series of novel soluble donor‐acceptor low‐bandgap‐conjugated polymers consisting of different oligothiophene (OTh) coupled to electron‐accepting moiety 2‐pyran‐4‐ylidenemalononitrile (PM)‐based unit were synthesized by Stille or Suzuki coupling polymerization. The combination of electron‐accepting PM building block with varied OThn (the number of thiophene unit increases from 3 to 5) results in enhanced π–π stacking in solid state and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition, which lead to an extension of the absorption spectra of the copolymers. Cyclic voltammetry measurements and molecular orbital distribution calculations indicate that the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) energy levels could be fine‐tuned by changing the number of thiophene units of the copolymers, and the resulting copolymers possessed relatively low HOMO energy levels promising good air stability and high‐open circuit voltage (Voc) for photovoltaic application. Bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices were fabricated by using the copolymers as donors and (6,6)‐phenyl C61‐butyric acid methyl ester as acceptor. It was found that the highest Voc reached 0.94 V, and the short circuit currents (Jsc) were improved from 1.78 to 2.54 mA/cm2, though the power conversion efficiencies of the devices were measured between 0.61 and 0.99% under simulated AM 1.5 solar irradiation of 100 mW/cm2, which indicated that this series copolymers can be promising candidates for the photovoltaic applications. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
