Three tetrafunctional bromoxanthate agents (Xanthate3‐Br, Xanthate2‐Br2, and Xanthate‐Br3) were synthesized. Initiative atom transfer radical polymerizations (ATRP) of styrene (St) or reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations of vinyl acetate (VAc) proceeded in a controlled manner in the presence of Xanthate3‐Br, Xanthate2‐Br2, or Xanthate‐Br3, respectively. The miktoarm star‐block copolymers containing polystyrene (PS) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) chains, PSnb‐PVAc4‐n (n = 1, 2, and 3), with controlled structures were successfully prepared by successive RAFT and ATRP chain‐extension experiments using VAc and St as the second monomers, respectively. The architecture of the miktoarm star‐block copolymers PSnb‐PVAc4‐n (n = 1, 2, and 3) were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR spectra. Furthermore, the results of the cleavage of PS3b‐PVAc and PVAc2b‐PS2 confirmed the structures of the obtained miktoarm star‐block copolymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An amphiphilic multiblock copolymer [poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐polystyrene]n [(PEO‐b‐PS)n] is synthesized by using trithiocarbonate‐embedded PEO as macro‐RAFT agent. PEO with four inserted trithiocarbonate (Mn = 9200 and Mw/Mn = 1.62) groups is prepared first by condensation of α, ω‐dihydroxyl poly(ethylene oxide) with S, S′‐Bis(α, α′‐dimethyl‐α″‐acetic acid)‐trithiocarbonate (BDATC) in the presence of pyridine, then a series of goal copolymers with different St units (varied from 25 to 218 per segment) are obtained by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The synthesis process is monitored by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), 1H NMR and FT‐IR. The self‐assembled morphologies of the copolymers are strongly dependent of the length of PS block chains when the chain length of PEO is fixed, some new morphologies as large leaf‐like aggregates (LLAs), large octopus‐like aggregates (LOAs), and coarse‐grain like micelles (CGMs) are observed besides some familiar aggregates as large compound vesicles (LCVs), lamellae and rods, and the effect of water content on the morphologies is also discussed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of new well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers containing hydrophobic poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) backbone and hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) side chains were reported. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer homopolymerization of tert‐butyl 2‐((2‐bromopropanoyloxy)methyl)acrylate was first performed to afford a well‐defined backbone with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.07). The target poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)‐g‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PtBA‐g‐PEO) graft copolymers with low polydispersities (Mw/Mn = 1.18–1.26) were then synthesized by atom transfer nitroxide radical coupling or single electron transfer‐nitroxide radical coupling reaction using CuBr(Cu)/PMDETA as catalytic system. Fluorescence probe technique was employed to determine the critical micelle concentrations (cmc) of the obtained amphiphilic graft copolymers in aqueous media. Furthermore, PAA‐g‐PEO graft copolymers were obtained by selective acidic hydrolysis of hydrophobic PtBA backbone while PEO side chains kept inert. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined polymethylene‐block‐polystyrene (PM‐b‐PS) diblock copolymers were synthesized via a combination of polyhomologation of ylides and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene. Trithiocarbonate‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐TTCB) (Mn = 1400 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.09 and Mn = 2100 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.20) were obtained via an esterification of S?1‐dodecyl‐S′‐(α,α′‐dimethyl‐α″‐acetate) trithiocarbonate with hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylene synthesized via polyhomologation of ylides followed by oxidation. Then, a series of PM‐b‐PS (Mn = 5500–34,000 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.12–1.25) diblock copolymers were obtained by RAFT polymerization of styrene using PM‐TTCB as a macromolecular chain‐transfer agent. The chain structures of all the polymers were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), gel permeation chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thiocarbonylthio end‐group of PM‐b‐PS was transformed into thiol group by aminolysis and confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy. In addition, microfibers and microspheres of such diblock copolymers were fabricated by electrospinning process and observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. A new, efficient method for synthesizing stable nanoparticles with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) functionalities on the core surface, in which the micellization and crosslinking reactions occur in one pot, has been developed. First, amphiphilic PEO‐b‐PS copolymers were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization of styrene using (PEO)‐based trithiocarbonate as a macro‐RAFT agent. The low molecular weight PEO‐b‐PS copolymer was dissolved in isopropyl alcohol where the block copolymer self‐assembled as core‐shell micelles, and then the core‐shell interface crosslink was performed using divinylbenzene as a crosslinking agent and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The design of the amphiphilic RAFT agent is critical for the successful preparation of core‐shell interface crosslinked micellar nanoparticles, because of RAFT functional groups interconnect PEO and polystyrene blocks. The PEO functionality of the nanoparticles surface was confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR. The size and morphology of the nanoparticles was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic laser light scattering analysis. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two new amphiphilic star graft copolymers bearing hydrophobic poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) backbone and hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) side chains with different molecular weights were synthesized by sequential reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and single electron transfer‐nitroxide radical coupling (SET‐NRC) reaction under mild conditions. RAFT homopolymerization of tert‐butyl 2‐((2‐bromopropanoyloxy)methyl)acrylate was mediated by a four‐armed chain transfer agent in a controlled way to afford a well‐defined starlike backbone with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.26). The target poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)‐g‐PEO (PtBA‐g‐PEO) star graft copolymers were synthesized by SET‐NRC reaction between Br‐containing PtBA‐based starlike backbone and PEO end functionalized with 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl (TEMPO) group using copper/N,N,N′,N′,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as catalytic system at ambient temperature via grafting‐onto strategy. The critical micelle concentration values of the obtained amphiphilic star graft copolymers in aqueous media and brine were determined by fluorescence probe technique using pyrene as probe. Diverse micellar morphologies were formed by varying the content of hydrophilic PEO segment as well as the initial concentration of stock solution. In addition, poly(acrylic acid)‐g‐PEO double hydrophilic star graft copolymers were obtained by selective acidic hydrolysis of hydrophobic PtBA starlike backbone without affecting PEO side chains. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of a new family of amphiphilic multiblock and triblock copolymers is described. The synthetic methodology rests on the preparation of telechelic multifunctional and difunctional chain transfer agents easily available in two synthetic steps from commercially available polydimethylsiloxane‐containing starting materials. Telechelic polymers thus synthesized are used as macromolecular chain transfer agents in the reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMA) enabling the synthesis of (AB)n‐type multiblock and ABA‐type triblock copolymers of varying compositions possessing monomodal molecular weight distribution. (AB)n multiblock copolymers [(PDMA‐b‐PDMS)n] were prepared with between 52 and 95 wt % poly(dimethylacrylamide) with number average molecular weights (Mn) between 14,000 and 86,000 (polydispersities of 1.20–2.30). On the other hand, ABA block copolymers with DMA led to amphiphilic block copolymers (PDMA‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PDMA) with Mn values between 9000 and 44,000 (polydispersities of 1.24–1.62). © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ability of 2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone (VDM), a highly reactive functional monomer, to produce block copolymers by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) sequential polymerization with methyl acrylate (MA), styrene (S), and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated using cumyl dithiobenzoate (CDB) and 2‐cyanoisopropyl dithiobenzoate (CPDB) as chain transfer agents. The results show that PS‐b‐PVDM and PMA‐b‐PVDM well‐defined block copolymers can be prepared either by polymerization of VDM from PS‐ and PMA‐macroCTAs, respectively, or polymerization of S and MA from a PVDM‐macroCTA. In contrast, PMMA‐b‐PVDM block copolymers with controlled molecular weight and low polydispersity can only be obtained by using PMMA as the macroCTA. Ab initio calculations confirm the experimental studies. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

Characterization of block size in poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(styrene) (PEO‐b‐PS) block copolymers could be achieved by matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF‐MS) after scission of the macromolecules into their constituent blocks. The performed hydrolytic cleavage was demonstrated to specifically occur on the targeted ester function in the junction group, yielding two homopolymers consisting of the constitutive initial blocks. This approach allows the use of well‐established MALDI protocols for a complete copolymer characterization while circumventing difficulties inherent to amphiphilic macromolecule ionization. Although the labile end‐group in PS homopolymer was modified by the MALDI process, PS block size could be determined from MS data since polymer chains were shown to remain intact during ionization. This methodology has been validated for a PEO‐b‐PS sample series, with two PEO of number average molecular weight (Mn) of 2000 and 5000 g mol?1 and Mn(PS) ranging from 4000 to 21,000 g mol?1. Weight average molecular weight (Mw), and thus polydispersity index, could also be reached for each segment and were consistent with values obtained by size exclusion chromatography. This approach is particularly valuable in the case of amphiphilic copolymers for which Mn values as determined by liquid state nuclear magnetic resonance might be affected by micelle formation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Liquid crystalline block copolymers (LCBCPs) are fascinating for their combining molecular level liquid crystalline orders and microphase separated multidomain morphologies. Here in this article, a series of PEG‐containing side‐chain discotic LCBCPs of PEG‐bPmn with variant spacer length m = 6, 10 and degree of polymerization (DP) of discotic LC block from n = 10 to 45, have been well‐synthesized via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The RAFT process mediated by macromolecular chain transfer agent (macroCTA) shows remarkable monomer concentration dependence. The influence of the introduced PEG block on the nano‐scale microphase‐segregation and mesophase organization is closely related to the side‐chain triphenylene (TP) discogens stacking mode dependent on the spacer length. Wherein, the PEG‐bP6n series with a six‐methylene spacer exhibit consistent microphase separation with slightly disturbed yet ordered columnar structures. While for PEG‐bP10n series with a longer ten‐methylene spacer, the columnar organization in the copolymers is even improved in contrast with the low order of randomly TP stacking in their corresponding homopolymers. This work offers a viable and inspiring pathway for controlled synthesis of block copolymers with bulky side groups, as well as enhances in‐depth understanding of the hierarchical superstructure organization in discotic units involved complex block copolymers. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four well‐defined diblock copolymers and one statistical copolymer based on lauryl methacrylate (LauMA) and 2‐(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate (AEMA) were prepared using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The polymers were characterized in terms of molecular weights, polydispersity indices (ranging between 1.12 and 1.23) and compositions by size exclusion chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy, respectively. The preparation of the block copolymers was accomplished following a two‐step methodology: First, well‐defined LauMA homopolymers were prepared by RAFT using cumyl dithiobenzoate as the chain transfer agent (CTA). Kinetic studies revealed that the polymerization of LauMA followed first‐order kinetics demonstrating the “livingness” of the RAFT process. The pLauMAs were subsequently used as macro‐CTA for the polymerization of AEMA. The glass transition (Tg) and decomposition temperatures (ranging between 200 and 300 °C) of the copolymers were determined using differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis, respectively. The Tgs of the LauMA homopolymers were found to be around ?53 °C. Block copolymers exhibited two Tgs suggesting microphase separation in the bulk whereas the statistical copolymer presented a single Tg as expected. Furthermore, the micellization behavior of pLauMA‐b‐pAEMA block copolymers was investigated in n‐hexane, a selective solvent for the LauMA block, using dynamic light scattering. pLauMA‐b‐pAEMA block copolymers formed spherical micelles in dilute hexane solutions with hydrodynamic diameters ranging between 30 and 50 nm. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study describes the synthesis of well‐defined nanocapsules via the miniemulsion technique. Pentaerythritol tetrakis(3‐mercaptopropionate) (TetraThiol) or 1,6‐hexanediol di(endo, exo‐norborn‐2‐ene‐5‐carboxylate) (DiNorbornene) is used as the oil phase. TetraThiol is encapsulated via the miniemulsion technique without polymerization, as this monomer would simultaneously act as a chain‐transfer agent, and DiNorbornene is encapsulated via miniemulsion polymerization of styrene. Various styrene‐maleic anhydride (PSMA) copolymers and poly(styrene‐maleic anhydride)‐block‐polystyrene (PSMA‐b‐PS) block copolymers were used as surfactant for the synthesis of well‐defined nanocapsules with TetraThiol as the core material. The nanocapsules had a diameter of 150–350 nm and the particle size distribution was narrow. The use of PSMA‐b‐PS block copolymers as surfactant in combination with post‐addition of formaldehyde provided improved stability to the nanocapsules. DiNorbornene was encapsulated via miniemulsion polymerization of styrene, and a stable latex with a bimodal particle size distribution was obtained. The distribution of small particles had a size of 60 nm and the distribution of large particles had a size of 150 nm. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

A series of well‐defined ABC 3‐Miktoarm star‐shaped terpolymers [Poly(styrene)‐Poly(ethylene oxide)‐Poly(ε‐caprolactone)](PS‐PEO‐PCL) with different molecular weight was synthesized by combination of the “living” anionic polymerization with the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) using macro‐initiator strategy. Firstly, the “living” poly(styryl)lithium (PS?Li+) species were capped by 1‐ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether(EEGE) quantitatively and the PS‐EEGE with an active and an ethoxyethyl‐protected hydroxyl group at the same end was obtained. Then, using PS‐EEGE and diphenylmethylpotassium (DPMK) as coinitiator, the diblock copolymers of (PS‐b‐PEO)p with the ethoxyethyl‐protected hydroxyl group at the junction point were achieved by the ROP of EO and the subsequent termination with bromoethane. The diblock copolymers of (PS‐b‐PEO)d with the active hydroxyl group at the junction point were recovered via the cleavage of ethoxyethyl group on (PS‐b‐PEO)p by acidolysis and saponification successively. Finally, the copolymers (PS‐b‐PEO)d served as the macro‐initiator for ROP of ε‐CL in the presence of tin(II)‐bis(2‐ethylhexanoate)(Sn(Oct)2) and the star(PS‐PEO‐PCL) terpolymers were obtained. The target terpolymers and the intermediates were well characterized by 1H‐NMR, MALDI‐TOF MS, FTIR, and SEC. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The star block copolymers with polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PS‐b‐PEO) as side chains and hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) as core were synthesized by combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with the “atom transfer nitroxide radical coupling” (“ATNRC”) reaction. The multiarm PS with bromide end groups originated from the HPG core (HPG‐g‐(PS‐Br)n) was synthesized by ATRP first, and the heterofunctional PEO with α‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy group and ω‐hydroxyl group (TEMPO‐PEO) was prepared by anionic polymerization separately using 4‐hydroxyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy (HTEMPO) as parents compound. Then ATNRC reaction was conducted between the TEMPO groups in PEO and bromide groups in HPG‐g‐(PS‐Br)n in the presence of CuBr and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA). The obtained star block copolymers and intermediates were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, fourier transform‐infrared in detail. Those results showed that the efficiency of ATNRC in the preparation of multiarm star polymers was satisfactory (>90%) even if the density of coupling cites on HPG was high. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined amphiphilic diblock copolymers consisting of hydrophobic polyisobutylene (PIB) and hydrophilic poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) segments was synthesized via the combination of living carbocationic polymerization and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Living carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene followed by end‐capping with 1,3‐butadiene was first performed at ?70 °C to give a well‐defined allyl‐Cl‐terminated PIB with a low polydispersity (Mw/Mn =1.29). This end‐functionalized PIB was further converted to a macromolecular chain transfer agent for mediating RAFT block copolymerization of 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate at 60 °C in tetrahydrofuran to afford the target well‐defined PIB‐b‐PDEAEMA diblock copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤1.22). The self‐assembly behavior of these amphiphilic diblock copolymers in aqueous media was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope, and furthermore, their pH‐responsive behavior was studied by UV‐vis and dynamic light scattering. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A detailed study of the pH‐ and sugar‐responsive behavior of poly(3‐acrylamidophenylboronic acid pinacol ester)‐b‐poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (PAPBAE‐b‐PDMA) block copolymers is presented. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of the pinacol ester of 3‐acrylamidophenylboronic acid resulted in homopolymers with molecular weights between 12,000 and 37,000 g/mol. The resulting homopolymers were employed as macro‐chain transfer agents during the polymerization of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMA). Successful chain extension and removal of the pinacol protecting groups to yield poly(3‐acrylamidophenylboronic acid)‐b‐PDMA (PAPBA‐b‐PDMA) with free boronic acid moieties resulted in pH‐ and sugar‐responsive block copolymers that were subsequently investigated for their behavior in aqueous solution. The PAPBA‐b‐PDMA block copolymers were capable of solution self‐assembly due to the PAPBA block being water‐insoluble below its pKa. The resulting aggregates were demonstrated to solubilize and release model hydrophobic compounds, as demonstrated by fluorescence studies. Dissociation of the aggregates was induced by raising the pH above the pKa of the boronic acid residues or by adding sugars capable of forming boronate esters. Aggregate size, dissociation kinetics, and the effect of various sugars were considered. The critical sugar concentration needed to induce aggregate dissociation was tuned by incorporation of hydrophilic DMA units within the PAPBA responsive segment to yield PDMA‐b‐poly(3‐acrylamidophenylboronic acid‐co‐DMA) block copolymers. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mixed micelles of polystyrene‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PS‐b‐PNIPAM) and two polystyrene‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers (PS‐b‐PEO) with different chain lengths of polystyrene in aqueous solution were prepared by adding the tetrahydrofuran solutions dropwise into an excess of water. The formation and stabilization of the resultant mixed micelles were characterized by using a combination of static and dynamic light scattering. Increasing the initial concentration of PS‐b‐PEO in THF led to a decrease in the size and the weight average molar mass (〈Mw〉) of the mixed micelles when the initial concentration of PS‐b‐ PNIPAM was kept as 1 × 10?3 g/mL. The PS‐b‐PEO with shorter PS block has a more pronounced effect on the change of the size and 〈Mw〉 than that with longer PS block. The number of PS‐b‐PNIPAM in each mixed micelle decreased with the addition of PS‐b‐PEO. The average hydrodynamic radius 〈Rh〉 and average radius of gyration 〈Rg〉 of pure PS‐b‐PNIPAM and mixed micelles gradually decreased with the increase in the temperature. Both the pure micelles and mixed micelles were stable in the temperature range of 18 °C–39 °C. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 1168–1174, 2010  相似文献

This article presents the utilization of “molecular amplification” to visualize the molecular architecture of “arborescent” (tree‐like) polystyrenes (arbPSs) using atomic force microscopy (AFM). arbPSs with Mn > 80,000 g/mol were synthesized via initiator‐monomer‐type (inimer) RAFT polymerization of styrene mediated by 4‐vinylbenzyl dithiobenzoate in bulk. These arbPS were then used as macrochain transfer agents for polymerization of vinylbenzyl chloride (VBCl) to give arborescent poly(styrene‐block‐vinylbenzyl chloride) (arbPS‐b‐VBCl). Poly(styryl) diphenylethyl lithium (Mn = 11,000 g/mol) was then grafted onto the VBCl units of the arbPS‐b‐VBCl. The Mn of the amplified arbPSs increased over >10 million g/mol, exceeding the exclusion limit of our size exclusion chromatography equipment. AFM confirmed the proposed branches on branches architecture in the samples, together with lesser branched species. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Triblock copolymers (MPEG‐b‐PCEMA‐b‐PHQHEMA) bearing cinnamoyl and 8‐hydroxyquinoline side groups with different block length are synthesized by a two‐step reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of cinnamoyl ethyl methacrylate (CEMA) and 2‐((8‐hydroxyquinolin‐5‐yl)methoxy)ethyl methacrylate (HQHEMA), respectively. The self‐assembly of MPEG‐b‐PCEMA‐b‐PHQHEMA in mixture of THF and ethanol is investigated by varying the ratio of THF and ethanol. Spheric micelles with diameter of 63.7 nm and polydispersity of 0.128 are obtained for MPEG113b‐PCEMA15b‐PHQHEMA17 in THF/ethanol with a volume ratio (v/v) of 5/5. The PCEMA inner shell of the resulted micelles is photo‐crosslinked under UV radiation to give stabilized micelles. The complex reaction of the stabilized micelles with Zn(II) is investigated under different conditions to give zinc(II)‐bis(8‐hydroxyquinoline)(Znq2)‐containing micelles. When the complex reaction is carried out in THF/ethanol (v/v = 5/5) or THF/toluene (v/v = 6/4) with zinc acetate, fluorescent Znq2‐containing micelles are obtained without obvious change in diameters and morphologies. The fluorescent micelles exhibit green emission with λmax at 520 nm. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2016 , 54, 1056–1064  相似文献

This article reports on studies regarding the photoisomerization kinetics and self‐assembly behaviors of two photoresponsive diblock copolymers, poly(4‐acetoxystyrene)‐block‐poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐azobenzene‐4′‐oxy) hexyl acrylate] (poly(StO54b‐Cazo9) and poly(StO54b‐Cazo5)), which dissolved in a THF/H2O solution through two‐step reverse addition‐fragmentation transfer polymerization. We examined the effect of heating methods (i.e., conventional and microwave heating) on the polymerization kinetics of a 4‐acetoxystyrene‐based macrochain transfer agent (StO macro‐CTA). The kinetics studies on the homopolymerization of StO by using microwave heating demonstrated controllable characteristics with relatively narrow polydispersities at ~1.14. The diblock copolymers exhibited moderate thermal stability, with thermal decomposition temperatures greater than 343.3 °C, suggesting that the enhancement of the thermal stability was due to the incorporation of azobenzene segments into block copolymers. Poly(StO54b‐Cazo9) showed lower photoisomerization rate constants (kt = 0.039 s?1) compared with Cazo monomer (kt = 0.097 s?1). Micellar aggregates with a mean diameter of approximately 238.3 nm were formed by gradually adding water to the THF solution (water content = 10 vol %), and are shown in SEM and TEM images of the diblock copolymer. The results of this study contribute to the literature regarding the development of photoresponsive polymer materials. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym.
