Designing engineering materials with high stiffness and high toughness is challenging as stiff materials tend to be brittle. Many biological materials realize this objective through multiscale (i.e., atomic‐ to macroscale) mechanisms that are extremely difficult to replicate in synthetic materials. Inspired from the architecture of such biological structures, we here present flow‐assisted organization and assembly of renewable native cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), which yields highly anisotropic biofibers characterized by a unique combination of high strength (1010 MPa), high toughness (62 MJ m?3) and high stiffness (57 GPa). We observed that properties of the fibers are primarily governed by specific ion characteristics such as hydration enthalpy and polarizability. A fundamental facet of this study is thus to elucidate the role of specific anion binding following the Hofmeister series on the mechanical properties of wet fibrillar networks, and link this to the differences in properties of dry nanostructured fibers. This knowledge is useful for rational design of nanomaterials and is critical for validation of specific ion effect theories. The bioinspired assembly demonstrated here is relevant example for designing high‐performance materials with absolute structural control.  相似文献

Protein‐metal interactions—traditionally regarded for roles in metabolic processes—are now known to enhance the performance of certain biogenic materials, influencing properties such as hardness, toughness, adhesion, and self‐healing. Design principles elucidated through thorough study of such materials are yielding vital insights for the design of biomimetic metallopolymers with industrial and biomedical applications. Recent advances in the understanding of the biological structure–function relationships are highlighted here with a specific focus on materials such as arthropod biting parts, mussel byssal threads, and sandcastle worm cement.  相似文献

Silk‐protein‐based fibers have attracted considerable interest due to their low weight and extraordinary mechanical properties. Most studies on fibrous proteins focus on the recombinant spidroins, but these fibers exhibit moderate mechanical performance. Thus, the development of alternative structural proteins for the construction of robust fibers is an attractive goal. Herein, we report a class of biological fibers produced using a designed chimeric protein, which consists of the sequences of a cationic elastin‐like polypeptide and a squid ring teeth protein. Remarkably, the chimeric protein fibers exhibit a breaking strength up to about 630 MPa and a corresponding toughness as high as about 130 MJ m?3, making them superior to many recombinant spider silks and even comparable to some native counterparts. Therefore, this strategy is a novel concept for exploring bioinspired ultrastrong protein materials through the development of new types of structural chimeric proteins.  相似文献

Currently, ordered mesoporous materials prepared through the self‐assembly of surfactants have attracted growing interests owing to their special properties, including uniform mesopores and a high specific surface area. Here we focus on fine controls of compositions, morphologies, mesochannel orientations which are important factors for design of mesoporous materials with new functionalities. This Review describes our recent progress toward advanced mesoporous materials. Mesoporous materials now include a variety of inorganic‐based materials, for example, transition‐metal oxides, carbons, inorganic‐organic hybrid materials, polymers, and even metals. Mesoporous metals with metallic frameworks can be produced by using surfactant‐based synthesis with electrochemical methods. Owing to their metallic frameworks, mesoporous metals with high electroconductivity and high surface areas hold promise for a wide range of potential applications, such as electronic devices, magnetic recording media, and metal catalysts. Fabrication of mesoporous materials with controllable morphologies is also one of the main subjects in this rapidly developing research field. Mesoporous materials in the form of films, spheres, fibers, and tubes have been obtained by various synthetic processes such as evaporation‐mediated direct templating (EDIT), spray‐dried techniques, and collaboration with hard‐templates such as porous anodic alumina and polymer membranes. Furthermore, we have developed several approaches for orientation controls of 1D mesochannels. The macroscopic‐scale controls of mesochannels are important for innovative applications such as molecular‐scale devices and electrodes with enhanced diffusions of guest species. © 2010 The Japan Chemical Journal Forum and Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Aligned carbon nanotube fibers are macroscopic materials with remarkable properties, such as high specific strength, stiffness, extreme flexibility as well as electrical and thermal conductivity. It is demonstrated that when subjected to negative potentials, these structures undergo the process of swelling in which the increase of their external dimension is observed. Swelling is believed to be caused by cation insertion in the process similar to intercalation. The efficiency of swelling was determined both in organic and aqueous solutions of different pH. Chronocoulometry was used as the technique to monitor the charging-discharging processes of swollen ACNT fibers in a presence of different electrolytes, i.e. LiCl, NaCl and KCl. The possibility of performing the charging-discharging cycles multiple times indicates that the swollen ACNT fibers can be considered as an advantageous material for electrodes in ion batteries and supercapacitors.  相似文献

There is large interest in replicating biological supramolecular structures in inorganic materials that are capable of mimicking biological properties. The use of 5‐guanosine monophosphate in the presence of Na+ and K+ ions as a supramolecular template for the synthesis of well‐ordered mesostructured materials is reported here. Mesostructured particles with the confined template exhibit high structural order at both meso‐ and atomic scales, with a lower structural symmetry in the columnar mesophase. Although a chiral space group can not be deduced from X‐ray diffraction, analysis by electron microscopy and circular dichroism confirms a chiral stacking arrangement along the c‐axis. Guanosine monophosphate based mesophases thus illustrate the possibility for specific molecular imprinting of mesoporous materials by genetic material and the potential for higher definition in molecular recognition.  相似文献

The development of biomolecular fiber materials with imaging ability has become more and more useful for biological applications. In this work, cationic conjugated polymers (CCPs) were used to construct inherent fluorescent microfibers with natural biological macromolecules (DNA and histone proteins) through the interfacial polyelectrolyte complexation (IPC) procedure. Isothermal titration microcalorimetry results show that the driving forces for fiber formation are electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, as well as the release of counterions and bound water molecules. Color‐encoded IPC fibers were also obtained based on the co‐assembly of DNA, histone proteins, and blue‐, green‐, or red‐ (RGB‐) emissive CCPs by tuning the fluorescence resonance energy‐transfer among the CCPs at a single excitation wavelength. The fibers could encapsulate GFP‐coded Escherichia coli BL21, and the expression of GFP proteins was successfully regulated by the external environment of the fibers. These multi‐colored fibers show a great potential in biomedical applications, such as biosensor, delivery, and release of biological molecules and tissue engineering.  相似文献

In this work, high‐performance fibers such as aramid (Twaron), polyamide (PA6), polyester (PET), and hybrid Twaron/PA6 fibers were transformed into electroactive fibers by coating them with conjugated polymer, poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) through vapor phase polymerization (VPP) method. The VPP is considered as an efficient technique for depositing CPs on different substrates regardless of their lower solubility in various solvents. In this paper, PEDOT‐coated high‐performance fibers were prepared under already optimized reaction conditions, and then a comparison between electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of different fibers, before and after coating, was made. The obtained coated fibers were characterized through scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), 2‐probe electrical resistance measurement method, and tensile testing. It was revealed that at particular reaction conditions, all high performance textile substrates were successfully converted into electroactive fibers. The voltage‐current (V‐I) characteristics showed that PEDOT‐coated polyester fibers exhibited highest conductivity value among all other substrate fibers. The active PEDOT layers on high performance fibers could behave as an antistatic coating to minimize the risks associated with static charges at work places. Also, the obtained fibers have potential to be used as smart materials for various medical, sports, and military applications.  相似文献

Ionic liquids (ILs) are ambient temperature molten salts, which have attracted considerable attention owing to their unique properties. In this contribution, we review advanced materials composed of ILs and polymers for the basis of a new design protocol to fabricate novel materials. As electrolytes for electrochemical devices, cross‐linked polymers containing ILs (ion gels) are endowed with functional properties inherited from ILs and mechanical consistency derived from polymers. To create such materials, micro‐phase separation of block copolymers and colloidal arrays in the ILs are utilized. Based on the molecular design of task‐specific ILs, the resultant ion gels are applicable as electrolytes for actuator, fuel cell, and secondary battery applications. Thermo‐ and photo‐responsive polymers in ILs are also highlighted, whereby such stimuli elicit changes in the solubility of the self‐assembly of block copolymers and colloidal arrays in the ILs. Further, thermo‐ and photo‐reversible changes in the self‐assembled structure can be exploited to demonstrate sol‐gel transitions and fabricate photo‐healable materials.  相似文献

Proteins used for the formation of light weight and mechanically strong biological fibers are typically composed of folded rigid and unfolded flexible units. In contrast to fibrous proteins, globular proteins are generally not regarded as a good candidate for fiber production due to their intrinsic structural defects. Thus, it is challenging to develop an efficient strategy for the construction of mechanically strong fibers using spherical proteins. Herein, we demonstrate the production of robust protein fibers from bovine serum albumin (BSA) using a microfluidic technique. Remarkably, the toughness of the fibers was up to 143 MJ m?3, and after post‐stretching treatment, their breaking strength increased to almost 300 MPa due to the induced long‐range ordered structure in the fibers. The performance is comparable to or even higher than that of many recombinant spider silks or regenerated silkworm fibers. Thus, this work opens a new way for making biological fibers with high performance.  相似文献

Polyesters based on polyols and sebacic acid, known as poly(polyol sebacate)s (PPS), are attracting considerable attention, as their properties are potentially useful in the context of soft‐tissue engineering applications. To overcome the drawback that PPSs generally display rather low strength and stiffness, we have pursued the preparation of nanocomposites based poly(mannitol sebacate) (PMS), a prominent example of this materials family, with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Nanocomposites were achieved in a two‐step process. A soluble, low‐molecular‐weight PMS pre‐polymer was formed via the polycondensation reaction between sebacic acid and D‐mannitol. Nanocomposites with different CNC content were prepared by solution‐casting and curing under vacuum using two different profiles designed to prepare materials with low and high degree of crosslinking. The as‐prepared nanocomposites have higher stiffness and toughness than the neat PMS matrix while maintaining a high elongation at break. A highly crosslinked nanocomposite with a CNC content of 5 wt % displays a sixfold increase in Young's modulus and a fivefold improvement in toughness. Nanocomposites also exhibit a shape memory effect with a switch temperature in the range of 15 to 45 °C; in particular the materials with a thermal transition in the upper part of this range are potentially useful for biomedical applications. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Designing the reversible interactions of biopolymers remains a grand challenge for an integral mimicry of mechanically superior biological composites. Yet, they are the key to synergistic combinations of stiffness and toughness by providing sacrificial bonds with hidden length scales. To address this challenge, dynamic polymers were designed with low glass‐transition temperature Tg and bonded by quadruple hydrogen‐bonding motifs, and subsequently assembled with high‐aspect‐ratio synthetic nanoclays to generate nacre‐mimetic films. The high dynamics and self‐healing of the polymers render transparent films with a near‐perfectly aligned structure. Varying the polymer composition allows molecular control over the mechanical properties up to very stiff and very strong films (E≈45 GPa, σUTS≈270 MPa). Stable crack propagation and multiple toughening mechanisms occur in situations of balanced dynamics, enabling synergistic combinations of stiffness and toughness. Excellent gas barrier properties complement the multifunctional property profile.  相似文献

Programming the synthesis and self‐assembly of molecules is a compelling strategy for the bottom‐up fabrication of ordered materials. To this end, shape‐persistent macrocycles were designed with alternating carbazoles and triazoles to program a one‐pot synthesis and to bind large anions. The macrocycles bind anions that were once considered too weak to be coordinated, such as PF6?, with surprisingly high affinities (β2=1011 M ?2 in 80:20 chloroform/methanol) and positive cooperativity, α=(4 K2/K1)=1200. We also discovered that the macrocycles assemble into ultrathin films of hierarchically ordered tubes on graphite surfaces. The remarkable surface‐templated self‐assembly properties, as was observed by using scanning tunneling microscopy, are attributed to the complementary pairing of alternating triazoles and carbazoles inscribed into both the co‐facial and edge‐sharing seams that exist between shape‐persistent macrocycles. The multilayer assembly is also consistent with the high degree of molecular self‐association observed in solution, with self‐association constants of K=300 000 M ?1 (chloroform/methanol 80:20). Scanning tunneling microscopy data also showed that surface assemblies readily sequester iodide anions from solution, modulating their assembly. This multifunctional macrocycle provides a foundation for materials composed of hierarchically organized and nanotubular self‐assemblies.  相似文献

Structures modification of fibers has been attracting significant attention in various fields and applications. Among different techniques of fabricating ultrathin fibers, electrospinning is the most commonly adopted method because of the ease of forming fibers with a wide range of properties and its exceptional advantages, such as the ability to spin into different shapes and sizes, as well as the adaptable porosity of electrospun fiber webs. The crimped structure has been attracting the attention of scientific researchers owing to its unique properties (eg, spring‐like behavior, supreme strain, remarkable specific surface area, good piezoelectric properties, excellent biological properties, and so on). Therefore, this study summarizes a review of the strategies and methods, reported so far, of generating electrospun crimped ultrathin fibers of various polymers. The review focuses on the polymer types, formation methods, characterizations, and applications of the electrospun crimped ultrathin fibers. We believe this work can serve as an important reference for the materials, strategies, and applications of crimped fibers.  相似文献

Developing simple and general approaches for the synthesis of nanometer‐sized DNA materials with specific morphologies and functionalities is important for various applications. Herein, a novel approach for the synthesis of a new set of DNA‐based nanoarchitectures through coordination‐driven self‐assembly of FeII ions and DNA molecules is reported. By fine‐tuning the assembly, Fe–DNA nanospheres of precise sizes and controlled compositions can be produced. The hybrid nanoparticles can be tailored for delivery of functional DNA to cells in vitro and in vivo with enhanced biological function. This highlights the potential of metal ion coordination as a tool for directing the assembly of DNA architectures, which conceptualizes a new pathway to expand the repertoire of DNA‐based nanomaterials. This methodology will advance both the fields of DNA nanobiotechnology and metal–ligand coordination chemistry.  相似文献

Supramolecular structures with strain‐stiffening properties are ubiquitous in nature but remain rare in the lab. Herein, we report on strain‐stiffening supramolecular hydrogels that are entirely produced through the self‐assembly of synthetic molecular gelators. The involved gelators self‐assemble into semi‐flexible fibers, which thereby crosslink into hydrogels. Interestingly, these hydrogels are capable of stiffening in response to applied stress, resembling biological intermediate filaments system. Furthermore, strain‐stiffening hydrogel networks embedded with liposomes are constructed through orthogonal self‐assembly of gelators and phospholipids, mimicking biological tissues in both architecture and mechanical properties. This work furthers the development of biomimetic soft materials with mechanical responsiveness and presents potentially enticing applications in diverse fields, such as tissue engineering, artificial life, and strain sensors.  相似文献

The effect of the coating of the fiber on the stiffness and toughness of composite materials is presented in this paper. The type of composite material considered is of a macroscopically isotropic composite medium containing coated fibers. The models used to simulate such materials consists of: the cylindrical fiber, a cylindrical annulus of the coating, an annulus of the matrix enveloped by an infinite region of an equivalent composite consisting of a transversely isotropic material and representing the real composite with dispersed coated fibers. Solutions for the longitudinal, transverse and shear elastic moduli in the four-phase model were established assuming linear elastic conditions. The results were found to depend on the extent and the mechanical properties of the coating. The stiffness and toughness of the composite were evaluated in models representing plane-stress equatorial sections of the representative volume element of the real material according to the Hashin-Rosen model. The stiffness of the fiber composites was studied by varying the rigidity and the extent of the fiber-coating in the model and evaluating its influence on the overall mechanical behavior of the model. On the other hand, the toughness of the composite was evaluated by the method of caustics in models made of composite PMMA plates with PMMA inclusions coated with a ductile annulus. Interesting results were derived concerning the influence of the soft annulus on the mechanical behavior of the composite.  相似文献

The beneficial effect of materials with high aspect ratio as composite reinforcement has prompted continuous interest towards cellulosic fibers. Besides providing stiffness, fibers can potentially contribute to composite extensibility. While mechanical treatments are typically used to adjust the physical and surface properties of fibers, less is known about ensuing effects on their extensibility and that of associated networks. Fiber network dimensional extensibility of 16% was achieved by processing the precursor aqueous fiber dispersions following a simple mechanical treatment with a judicious combination of low (PFI refining) and high concentrations and temperatures (Wing defibrator). Consequently, deformation of fibers and increased inter-fiber bonding resulted in a three-fold increase in strength to rupture of the fiber network leading to the structures with unprecedented toughness.  相似文献
