We describe phenomena of colloidal particle transport and separation inside single microdroplets of water floating on the surface of dense fluorinated oil. The experiments were performed on microfluidic chips, where single droplets were manipulated with alternating electric fields applied to arrays of electrodes below the oil. The particles suspended in the droplets were collected in their top region during the evaporation process. Experimental results and numerical simulations show that this microsepration occurs as a result of a series of processes driven by mass and heat transfer. An interfacial tension gradient develops on the surface of the droplet as a result of the nonuniform temperature distribution during the evaporation. This gradient generates an internal convective Marangoni flow. The colloidal particles transported by the flow are collected in the top of the droplets by the hydrodynamic flux, compensating for evaporation through the exposed top surface. The internal flow pattern and temperature distribution within evaporating droplets were simulated using finite element calculations. The results of the simulation were consistent with experiments using tracer particles. Such microseparation processes can be used for on-chip synthesis of advanced particles and innovative microbioassays.  相似文献

The evaporation of sessile drops at reduced pressure is investigated. The evaporation of water droplets on aluminum and PTFE surfaces at reduced pressure was compared. It was found that water droplets on an aluminum surface exhibit a 'depinning jump' at subatmospheric pressures. This is when a pinned droplet suddenly depins, with an increase in contact angle and a simultaneous decrease in the base width. The evaporation of sessile water droplets with a nonionic surfactant (Triton X-100) added to an aluminum surface was then studied. The initial contact angle exhibited a minimum at 0.001 wt% Triton X-100. A maximum in the evaporation rate was also observed at the same concentration. Droplets with low surfactant concentrations are found to exhibit the 'depinning jump.' It is thought that the local concentration of the surfactant causes a gradient of surface tension. The balance at the contact angle is dictated by complex phenomena, including surfactant diffusion and adsorption processes at interfaces. Due to the strong evaporation near the triple line, an accumulation of the surfactant will lead to a surface tension gradient along the interface. The gradient of surface tension will influence the wetting behavior (Marangoni effect). At low surfactant concentrations the contact line depins under the strong effect of surface tension gradient that develops spontaneously over the droplet interface due to surfactant accumulation near the triple line. The maximum evaporation rate corresponds to a minimum contact angle for a pinned droplet.  相似文献

Spreading of partially crystallized oil droplets on an air/water interface   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The influence of crystalline fat on the amount and rate of oil spreading out of emulsion droplets onto either a clean or a protein-covered air/water interface was measured for β-lactoglobulin stabilized emulsions prepared with either anhydrous milk fat or a blend of hydrogenated palm fat and sunflower oil. At a clean interface, liquid oil present in the emulsion droplets was observed to completely spread out of the droplets unimpeded by the presence of a fat crystal network. Further, the presence of a fat crystal network in the emulsion droplets had no effect on the rate of oil spreading out of the droplets. At a protein-covered interface, the spreading behavior of emulsion droplets containing crystalline fat was evaluated in terms of the value of the surface pressure (ΠAW) at the point of spreading; ΠAW at spreading was unaffected by the presence of crystalline fat. We conclude it is unlikely that the role of crystalline fat in stabilizing aerated emulsions such as whipped cream is to reduce oil spreading at the air/water interface. However, the temperature of the system did have an effect: spontaneous spreading of emulsion droplets at clean air/water interfaces occurred for systems measured at 5 °C, but not for those measured at 22 or 37 °C. Thus, temperature may play a more important role in the whipping process than commonly thought: the entering and spreading of emulsion droplets was favored at lower temperatures because the surface pressure exerted by protein adsorbed at the air/water interface was reduced. We study the effects of Marangoni stresses on the flow in an evaporating sessile droplet, by extending a lubrication analysis and a finite element solution of the flow field in a drying droplet, developed earlier. The temperature distribution within the droplet is obtained from a solution of Laplace's equation, where quasi-steadiness and neglect of convection terms in the heat equation can be justified for small, slowly evaporating droplets. The evaporation flux and temperature profiles along the droplet surface are approximated by simple analytical forms and used as boundary conditions to obtain an axisymmetric analytical flow field from the lubrication theory for relatively flat droplets. A finite element algorithm is also developed to solve simultaneously the vapor concentration, and the thermal and flow fields in the droplet, which shows that the lubrication solution with the Marangoni stress is accurate for contact angles as high as 40 degrees. From our analysis, we find that surfactant contamination, at a surface concentration as small as 300 molecules/microm(2), can almost entirely suppress the Marangoni flow in the evaporating droplet.  相似文献

This work investigated the effect of counter‐ions and interfacial turbulence on oxygen transfer from gas to liquid phase containing ionic surfactant, and experiments were performed in a mechanically stirred reactor with flat gas–liquid interface. Counter‐ions in terms of hydration ability and polarizability influence the interfacial coverage of ionic surfactants (i.e. cetytrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetytrimethylammonium chloride) with the same hydrocarbon chain length, producing hindrance but in different extent on oxygen transfer. The addition of electrolyte (NH4Br) substantially reduced the interfacial tension and surface charge of micelles (zeta potential) in CTAB system, and this salt effect greatly compressed interfacial double layer leading to gas transfer inhibition. The surface charge, aggregation number as well as stability of micelles formed above the critical micelle concentration could also alter interfacial configuration of surfactant layer reflected by gas absorption rate. Liquid turbulence was analyzed to decide the role of surfactant present in water on gas–liquid mass transfer, since Marangoni instability effect playing positive role should be taken into consideration under moderate liquid flow, while in turbulent system, contribution of Marangoni effect became overshadowed and consequently surfactant pose ‘barrier’ effect on gas transfer due to its surface active nature.  The interaction of a nonionic polymeric surfactant with an anionic surfactant at the oil–water interface has been studied by its effects on the droplet size, stability and rheology of emulsions. Oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions were prepared using isoparaffinic oil and mixtures of a nonionic polymeric surfactant with an anionic surfactant. The macro-molecular surfactant was a graft copolymer with a backbone of polymethyl methacrylate and grafted polyethylene oxide (a graft copolymer with PEO chains of MW=750). The anionic surfactant was sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The stabiliza-tion of the emulsion droplets was found to be different when using one or the other surfactant. The mechanism of stabilization of emulsion droplets by the macro-molecular surfactant is of the steric type while the stabilization by anionic surfactant is of the electrostatic repulsion type. Emulsions stabilized with mixtures present both types of stabilization. Other effects on the preparation and stabilization of emulsions were found to be dependent on properties associated with the surfactant molecular weight such as the Marangoni effect and Gibbs elasticity. The initial droplet size of the emulsions showed a synergistic effect of the surfactant combination, showing a minimum for the mixtures compared to the pure components. Emulsion stability also shows a synergistic interaction of both surfactants. Rheological measurements allow for the estimation of the interparticle interaction when measured as a function of volume fraction. Most of the effects observed can be attributed to the differences in interfacial tension and droplet radius produced by both surfactants and their mixtures. The elastic moduli are well explained on the basis of droplet deformation. Ionic versus steric stabilization produce little difference in the observed rheology, the only important differences observed concerned the extent of the linear viscoelasticity region. Here we present the exact solution of two approaching spherical droplets problem, at small Reynolds and Peclet numbers, taking into account surface shear and dilatational viscosities, Gibbs elasticity, surface and bulk diffusivities due to the presence of surfactant in both disperse and continuous phases. For large interparticle distances, the drag force coefficient, f, increases only about 50% from fully mobile to tangentially immobile interfaces, while at small distances, f can differ several orders of magnitude. There is significant influence of the degree of surface coverage, θ, on hydrodynamic resistance β for insoluble surfactant monolayers. When the surfactant is soluble only in the continuous phase the bulk diffusion suppresses the Marangoni effect only for very low values of θ, while in reverse situation, the bulk diffusion from the drop phase is more efficient and the hydrodynamic resistance is lower. Surfactants with low value of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) make the interfaces tangentially immobile, while large CMC surfactants cannot suppress interfacial mobility, which lowers the hydrodynamic resistance between drops. For micron-sized droplets the interfacial viscosities practically block the surface mobility and they approach each other as solid spheres with high values of the drag coefficient.  相似文献

The influence of local and nonlocal transport processes of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) molecules on dynamic contact angles and contact angle hysteresis was studied in a rotating drum setup. The influence of long-range surfactant transport was analyzed by hindering selectively the surface or the bulk transport via movable barriers. With increasing hindrance of the surfactant transport, the receding contact angle decreased at all withdrawing velocities in the presence of CTAB. The control experiment with pure water was unaffected by the presence of the barriers. Dynamic contact angles are, therefore, not only influenced by short-range effects like Marangoni stresses close to the contact line, but also by long-range transport processes (like diffusion and advection) between the regions close to the receding and advancing contact lines.  相似文献

Self-propelled oil droplets in a nonequilibrium system have drawn much attention as both a primitive type of inanimate chemical machinery and a dynamic model of the origin of life. Here, to create the pH-sensitive self-propelled motion of oil droplets, we synthesized cationic surfactants containing hydrolyzable ester linkages. We found that n-heptyloxybenzaldehyde oil droplets were self-propelled in the presence of ester-containing cationic surfactant. In basic solution prepared with sodium hydroxide, oil droplets moved as molecular aggregates formed on their surface. Moreover, the self-propelled motion in the presence of the hydrolyzable cationic surfactant lasted longer than that in the presence of nonhydrolyzable cationic surfactant. This is probably due to the production of a fatty acid by the hydrolysis of the ester-containing cationic surfactant and the subsequent neutralization of the fatty acid with sodium hydroxide. A complex surfactant was formed in the aqueous solution because of the cation and anion combination. Because such complex formation can induce both a decrease in the interfacial tension of the oil droplet and self-assembly with n-heptyloxybenzaldehyde and lauric acid in the aqueous dispersion, the prolonged movement of the oil droplet may be explained by the increase in heterogeneity of the interfacial tension of the oil droplet triggered by the hydrolysis of the ester-containing surfactant.  相似文献

The analysis of processes taking place in a steady pneumatic (dynamic) foam shows the possibility of different modes of surfactant accumulation within the top layers of bubbles due to rupture of external foam films. An increasing surfactant concentration within the top layers promotes the stabilisation of bubbles and the foam as a whole. Considering the balance of surfactant and water during the bursting of films it is possible to estimate the accumulated surfactant loss caused by a downwards flow through the Plateau borders of the subsurface bubble layer. This effect depends on the particular conditions, especially on the surfactant activity and concentration of the surfactant, water volume fraction in the foam and size of foam bubbles. The process of surfactant accumulation in the top foam bubble layer can be complicated due to the removal of part of the accumulated surfactant through transport with droplets spread out during bubble bursting.  相似文献

The development of solutocapillary flows at the surfaces of air bubbles and chlorobenzene droplets was experimentally studied in nonuniform aqueous solutions of ethanol and isopropanol, which have a low surface tension and, hence, exhibit surface-active properties with respect to water. The experiments demonstrated the retardation of the onset of the development of the Marangoni concentration-induced convection relative to the moment of the contact between an inflowing surfactant (alcohol) and the surface. The critical concentration gradients (the Marangoni diffusion numbers) necessary for the initiation of mass transfer of a liquid along the interface were determined as dependent on the rate of inflow of a tongue of a more concentrated solution and the initial alcohol concentration around the bubble.  相似文献

We have developed a simple Marangoni flow-induced method for self-assembling nanoparticles (NPs) into both hexagonal and stripelike patterns. First, a NPs/ethanol suspension was spread on a slightly nonwettable and a wettable silicon oxide substrate. The Marangoni flow, induced by simultaneous evaporation of ethanol and condensation of water, leads to the formation of the corresponding hexagonal distributed circular NP rings and dotted stripes. The inter-ring spacing and ring size of the hexagonal patterns can be tuned by varying the relative humidity of the N2 stream blown over the slightly nonwettable substrate. Hexagonal patterns of circular NP patches can also be fabricated by lowering the evaporation of the condensed water droplets. On the wettable substrate, complex patterns result when the humidity of the N2 stream changes.  相似文献

The ability of water-soluble, globular proteins to tune surfactant/oil/water self-assemblies has potential for the formation of biocompatible microemulsions and also plays a role in protein function at biological interfaces. In this work, we examined the effect of the protein alpha-lactalbumin on Aerosol-OT (AOT) phase structures in equivolume mixtures of oil and 0.1 M brine. In this pseudo-ternary system, surfactants are free to move to either oil or water phase to adopt phase structures close to the spontaneous curvature of the surfactants. Using small-angle X-ray scattering, we observed that addition of this protein changed the spontaneous curvature of the surfactant monolayer substantially. In the absence of protein, AOT adopted a negative spontaneous curvature to form spherical w/o microemulsion droplets. When less than 1 wt % of alpha-lactalbumin was added into the system, the w/o droplets became nonspherical and larger in volume, corresponding to an increase in water uptake into the droplets. As the protein-to-surfactant ratio increased, protein, surfactant, and oil increasingly partitioned toward the aqueous phase. There the protein triggered the formation of o/w microemulsions with a positive spontaneous curvature. These protein-containing structures exhibited significant interparticle attraction. We also compared the influence of two oil types, isooctane and cyclohexane, on the protein/surfactant interactions. We propose that the more negative natural curvature of the AOT/cyclohexane monolayer in the absence of protein prevented protein incorporation within organic phase structures and consequently pushed the system self-assembly toward aqueous aggregate formation.  相似文献

This study investigated the relationship between the state of water and the dispersion stability of a skin cream formulation. Hydrophilic ointments treated with a high-pressure wet-type jet mill were used as model formulations. Spin-lattice relaxation times (T(1)) were measured by magnetic resonance techniques to estimate the state of water in samples. A shorter T(1) relaxation time was obtained from samples with higher surfactant content, whereas the processing pressure of the jet mill and 1-week storage at 40 °C did not influence the T(1) relaxation time. Observations using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that coalescence occurred in samples with lower surfactant contents (1.0% by weight) following 1-week storage at 40 °C. We also investigated samples prepared using a hydrophilic surfactant with a short polyethylene glycol (PEG) chain and with PEG-4000. From the change in T(1) relaxation times after removing the oil phase from samples by centrifugation, it was clarified that most of the surfactant was located on the surface of oil droplets. Furthermore, SEM observations showed that phase separation was facilitated as the PEG chain length of the surfactant shortened. Thus, a thin water layer over oil droplets is the most important factor for stabilizing their dispersion. This study provides proof-of-principle results on the contribution of the state of water to the dispersion stability of a skin cream formulation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the viability and permeability of carbamazepine (CBZ) solubilized in fully dilutable non-ionic microemulsions across Caco-2 cells used as a model for intestinal epithelium. Maximum solubilization capacity (SC) of CBZ was determined within water-in-oil (W/O), bicontinuous and oil-in-water (O/W) structures formed upon dilution. The effect of the nature of the oil phase, surfactant type, and the ratio between the oil phase and surfactant on the quantity of solubilized CBZ, droplets size, the viability of the cells and drug permeability was elucidated. We found that: (1) several fully dilutable microemulsions based on pharma-grade ingredients can be loaded with very significant amounts of CBZ, (2) W/O microemulsions (10wt% water) exhibit up to 3-fold higher solubilization capacity over the drug's solubility in oil (triacetin), (3) CBZ in the O/W microemulsions (80wt% water) exhibit up to 29-fold higher solubilization than in water, (4) the O/W droplets of the examined systems are 9-11nm in size, (5) the highest permeability was obtained in systems containing triacetin/alpha-tocopherol acetate/ethanol in 3/1/4wt% ratio as oil phase and Tween 60 as surfactant, (6) the replacement of alpha-tocopherol acetate by alpha-tocopherol inhibits CBZ release, (7) replacement of a saturated chain of Tween 60 by an unsaturated (Tween 80) or shorter chain (Tween 40) inhibited drug release, (8) the decrease in the oil phase to surfactant ratio leads to enhancement of drug release (dilution line 64>dilution line 73).  相似文献

In this work the structural features of microemulsions (MEs) containing the pharmaceutical biocompatible Soya phosphatidylcholine/Tween 20 (1:1) as surfactant (S), Captextrade mark 200 as oil phase (O), and phosphate buffer 10mM, pH 7.2 as aqueous phase (W) were studied. Systems obtained with different proportions of the components were described by pseudo-ternary phase diagrams in order to characterize the microemulsions studied here. MEs were prepared with and without the polyene antifungal drug amphotericin B (AmB). The maximum AmB incorporation into the ME system was dependent on both the oil phase and surfactant proportions with 6.80 and 5.7mg/mL in high contents, respectively. The incorporation of AmB into the ME systems significantly increased the profile of the droplet size of the ME for all ranges of surfactant proportions used in the formulations. The microstructures of the system were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and rheological behavior. The DLS results showed that the size of the oil droplets increases 4.6-fold when AmB is incorporated into the ME system. In all cases the increase in the proportion of the oil phase of the ME leads to a slight increase in the diameter of the oil droplets of the system. Furthermore, for both the AmB-loaded and AmB-unloaded MEs, the size of the oil droplets decrease significantly with the increase of the S proportion in the formulations, demonstrating the efficiency of the surfactant in stabilizing the ME. Depending on the ME composition, an anti-thixotropic behavior was found. The maximum increases of the consistency index caused by the increase of the oil phase of the ME were of 17- and 25-times for the drug-loaded and drug-unloaded MEs, respectively. However, the observed effect for the drug-loaded ME was about 4.6 times higher than that for the drug-unloaded one, demonstrating the strong effect of the drug on the rheological characteristics of the ME system. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that the investigated ME can be used as a very promising vehicle for AmB.  相似文献

A novel bi‐functional Janus cotton fabric is used to separate oil from oil‐in‐water emulsions. This fabric is superhydrophobic on one surface and polyamine‐bearing on the other. When used as a filter, the polyamine‐bearing side causes the micrometer‐sized oil droplets to coalesce. The coalesced oil then fills fabric pores on the superhydrophobic side and selectively permeates it. Oil separation using this method is rapid and the separated oil is pure. Furthermore, the content of the model oil hexadecane (HD) in water after a separation can be reduced to less than 0.03±0.03 vol %. These features demonstrate the practical potential of this technology.  相似文献

In many oil production sites water injection is used as a piston to push the crude out of the well. As the age of the field progresses, the ratio of water to oil produced increases. Agitation of a water and crude oil mixture may give stable water-in-oil emulsion in which the water remains dispersed for a long period of time. These emulsions can cause severe problems in production and transport processes since they normally possess high stability and viscosity. The most important water properties which may contribute to the emulsion stability include pH and additive content. In this study, we report on the effect of both, water pH and the presence of surfactant molecules (anionic, cationic or non-ionic) on the stability of an Algerian crude oil (Haoudh el Hamra well) aqueous emulsion prepared by a mechanical agitation procedure. The stability was followed by the test-bottle method to measure the resolved water separated from the emulsion, and optical microscopy to visualize the dispersed water droplets in the oil phase. The results of the effects of varying the aqueous-phase pH suggest that the neutral medium is more efficient than acidic or basic environment for stabilizing the emulsions. The addition of non-ionic surfactants has a better potential to improve crude oil emulsion stability with respect to both cationic and anionic surfactants which do not show any improvement in the oil/water phase compatibility.  相似文献

We describe here our recent work on spontaneous regular motion of liquid droplet powered by the chemical Marangoni effect under spatially symmetric conditions. It is shown that a spontaneously crawling oil droplet on a glass substrate with a nonequilibrium chemical condition of cationic surfactant exhibits regular rhythmic motion in a quasi-one-dimensional vessel, whereas irregular motion is induced in a two-dimensionally isotropic environment. Such behavior of a droplet demonstrates that spontaneous regular motion can be generated under fluctuating conditions by imposing an appropriate geometry. As another system, we introduce alcohol droplet moving spontaneously on water surface. The droplet spontaneously forms a specific morphology depending on its volume, causing specific mode of translational motion. An alcohol droplet with a smaller volume floating on water surface moves irregularly. On the other hand, a droplet with a larger volume undergoes vectorial motion accompanied by deformation into an asymmetric shape. This result suggests a scenario on the emergence of regular motion coupled with geometrical pattern formation under far-from-equilibrium conditions.  相似文献
