Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) individually dispersed in surfactants leads to diameter and type-selective photohydroxylation of the nanotubes. Photohydroxylation of first semiconductor and then small diameter metallic SWCNTs was confirmed after 254 nm UV irradiation in acidic, neutral, and basic aqueous solutions at ambient and elevated temperatures. The increased oxygen content of the SWCNTs after UV irradiation, as detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, suggests that SWCNTs were hydroxylated by reaction with water. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared analysis provides evidence of hydroxyl functional groups on their surface. This photochemical reaction is impeded by molecular oxygen and appears to involve a reactive intermediate generated in the vicinity of semiconducting SWCNTs. This represents a noncontaminating selective reaction in the liquid phase that uses an intrinsic property of the tubes.  相似文献

Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs) possess a wealth of exceptional structural, mechanical and electronic properties. These have made them potentially useful for applications in nanotube-reinforced materials, nanoelectronic devices, field emitters, probe tips for SPM, as well as for sensors, biosensors, and actuators. However, manipulation and processing of SWCNTs has been limited by their insolubility in most common solvents, although some dissolution has recently been obtained. Their chemical modification might pave the way to many useful applications, including the preparation of composite materials or the immobilization of biological molecules as enzymes (i.e., for biosensors and electrochemical sensors). Attachment of oxygen-containing functional groups (i.e., carboxy groups, carbonyl groups, hydroxy groups, etc.) on the surface of the carbon nanotubes could be achieved using different pretreatments of the nanostructured material. These involved (a) chemical and physical procedures; and (b) electrochemical functionalization. Different attempts at sidewall modification have been hampered by the presence of significant contaminants as graphitic and amorphous carbon or have required solubilization via chemical reactions on the ends of cut nanotubes. A more accommodating and direct approach to functionalize nanotubes is therefore required. We report here the sidewall functionalization of purified SWCNTs, obtained by different approaches and finally, we can discuss possible applications of functionalized SWCNTs in the sensing area.  相似文献

The poly(9,9-dioctyl fluorine-alt-2-amino-4,6-pyrimidine) (oligomer) is used as an effective dispersant for single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and generates stable SWCNTs hybrid after elimination of the excess polymer. The covered polymers immobilized Pt nanoparticles onto the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by coordination between Pt and polymer and the amount of the loaded Pt on the hybrid was calculated to be 38.5 wt %. The average diameter of the Pt nanoparticles on the SWCNTs were about ~4–5 nm and have a moderate electrochemically active surface area of 40.5 m2/g. These studies strongly imply the possible application of novel pyrimidine/carbon materials as catalyst supports in the electrodes of fuel cells.  相似文献

Effect of Ar(+) ion irradiation on the structure of pristine and fluorinated single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The TEM analysis revealed retention of tubular structures in both irradiated samples while Raman spectroscopy and XPS data indicated a partial destruction of nanotubes and formation of oxygen-containing groups on the nanotube surface. From similarity of electronic states of carbon in the irradiated pristine and fluorinated SWCNTs observed by XPS, it was suggested that defluorination of nanotubes proceeded with breaking of C-F bonds.  相似文献

In this work, activated carbons (ACs) were modified by ozone treatment to enhance the efficiency of removal of ammonia gas over the ACs. Surface properties of the ACs were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and N2 adsorption isotherms at 77 K were investigated by BET and D-A methods to characterize the specific surface area, total pore volume, and micropore volume. The ammonia removal efficiency was confirmed by the gas-detecting tube technique. The results showed that the specific surface area and micropore volume of ACs were slightly destroyed as the ozone treatment time increased. However, the ozone treatment led to an increase in ammonia removal efficiency of ACs, mainly due to an increase of acid functional groups, such as carbonyl and ether groups, on carbon surfaces. It was revealed that the improvement of ammonia removal efficiency of ACs was greatly affected by the interfacial acid-base interactions between modified ACs and basic ammonia adsorbate.  相似文献

The development of new methods for the facile synthesis of hybrid nanomaterials is of great importance due to their importance in nanotechnology. In this work, we report a new method to deposit Au nanoparticles on the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Our approach consists of a one pot synthesis in which Au nanoparticles are generated in the presence of a photoreducing agent (Irgacure-2959) and carboxyl or polymer-functionalized SWCNTs (f-SWCNTs). We have observed that when carbon nanotubes are functionalized with polymers containing pendant amino groups, the latter can act as specific nucleation sites for well-dispersed deposition of Au nanoparticles. The surface coverage of the Au nanoparticles can be observed by transmission electron spectroscopy. These observations are compared to that of carboxyl functionalized SWCNTs, in which less surface coverage was observed. The f-SWCNT/Au nanocomposites were also characterized by UV-vis, infrared, and Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). This facile and effective route can be implemented to deposit gold nanoparticles on other surface-functionalized carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

The intermediate frequency modes (IFM) of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy and in situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry. The inner and outer tubes of DWCNTs manifested themselves as distinct bands in the IFM region. This confirmed the diameter dependence of IFM frequencies. Furthermore, the analysis of inner tubes of DWCNTs allowed a more-precise assignment of the bands in the IFM region to features intrinsic for carbon nanotubes. Although the inner tubes in DWCNTs are assumed to be structurally perfect, the role of defects on IFM was discussed. The dependence of IFM on electrochemical charging was also studied. In situ spectroelectrochemical data provide a means to distinguish the bands of the outer and inner tubes.  相似文献

Double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs), single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were investigated as an alternative for platinum in counter-electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells. The counter-electrodes were prepared on fluorine-doped tin oxide glass substrates by the screen printing technique from pastes of carbon nanotubes and organic binder. The solar cells were assembled from carbon nanotubes counter-electrodes and screen printed anodes made from titanium dioxide. The cells produced with DWCNTs, SWCNTs or MWCNTs have overall conversion efficiencies of 8.0%, 7.6% and 7.1%, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed that DWCNTs displayed the highest catalytic activity for the reduction of tri-iodide ions. The large surface area and superior chemical stability of the DWCNTs facilitated the electron-transfer kinetics at the interface between counter-electrode and electrolyte and yielded the lowest transfer resistance, thereby improving the photovoltaic activity. A short-term stability test at moderate conditions confirmed the robustness of solar cells based on the use of DWCNTs, SWCNTs or MWCNTs.

Double-wall carbon nanotubes, single-wall carbon nanotubes and multi-wall carbon nanotubes have been investigated as an alternative for platinum in counter-electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based DSCs exhibit efficiency high up to 8.0% and are comparable to the Pt based DSCs prepared in the same condition. The CNTs based DSCs have demonstrated a good stability.  相似文献

Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were synthesized using four different carbon precursors including CO, C2H5OH, CH3OH, and C2H2 on Co-Mo catalysts. Semiconducting (n,m) abundance was evaluated by a method based on a single-particle tight-binding theoretical model taking into consideration the relative photoluminescence and absorption quantum efficiency for specific (n,m) tubes. (n,m) abundance determined in photoluminescence analysis was used to reconstruct the near-infrared Es11 absorption spectra. Carbon precursor pressure was found to be the key factor to the chirality control in this study. Narrowly (n,m) distributed SWCNTs can only be obtained under high-pressure CO or vacuumed C2H5OH and CH3OH. The majority of these nanotubes are predominately in the same higher chiral-angle region. The carbon precursor chemistry may also play an important role to obtain narrowly (n,m) distributed SWCNTs. (n,m) selectivity on Co-Mo catalysts shifts under different carbon precursors providing the route for (n,m) specific SWCNTs production.  相似文献

The growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs) on substrates has attracted great interests because of the potential applications in various fields. Carbon monoxide(CO) was used as the carbon source for the growth of SWCNTs on silicon substrates. Random or oriented SWCNTs can be produced by varying the CO flow rate. When the flow rate of CO was as low as 20 sccm(sccm:standard cubic centimeter per minute), dense SWCNT networks with clean surface were produced. When the flow rate was above 50 sccm, vertically aligned SWCNT(VA-SWCNT) arrays were grown. Well-aligned VA-SWCNT arrays were obtained in the temperature range of 650-800℃ and the content of large-diameter(above 1.7 nm) tubes in the array increased with the temperature. The height of the array was affected by the growth temperature, the CO flow rate, and the growth time. These findings indicate CO can be used as an efficient carbon source for the growth of SWCNTs on substrates under low flow rates.  相似文献

In this work, the pitch-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were prepared by nitric acid to investigate the multi-metal adsorption in interfacial and textural points of view. N2/77 K adsorption isotherm characteristics, including the specific surface area and micropore volume, were studied by BET specific surface area and t-plot methods, respectively. As a result, the specific surface area of the almost neutral ACFs in nature significantly decreased with nitric acid treatment, probably due to the widening of micropores. However the total acidity, including the carboxyl groups, on carbon surfaces was extremely induced during the acidic surface treatment. From the adsorptions of Cu2+ and Ni2+, it was revealed that the adsorption capacity of metal ions was mainly influenced by the weakly acidic functional groups such as lactones on the carbon surfaces at pH < pI (isoelectric point), and by the strongly acidic functional groups such as carboxyl groups at pH > pI.  相似文献

In this study, activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were produced by an oxyfluorination treatment to enhance the capacity of ammonia gas removal. The introduction of polar groups, such as CF, CO, and COOH, on the ACFs was confirmed by a XPS analysis, and N2/77 K adsorption isotherm characteristics including specific surface area and total and micropore volumes were studied by the BET and t-plot methods. The ammonia-removal efficiency was confirmed by a gas-detecting tube technique. As a result, the specific surface area and micropore volume of ACFs were slightly destroyed as the surface treatment time was increased. However, the oxyfluorinated ACFs led to an increase of fluorine and oxygen-containing polar functional groups in ACF surfaces, resulting in an increase in the ammonia-removal efficiency of the ACFs produced.  相似文献

The formation of a massive quantity of single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) superbundles has been introduced through sonicating SWCNTs in tetramethylene sulfone/chloroform solution in which nitronium hexafluoroantimonate (NHFA) is dissolved. Most SWCNT bundles with the NHFA treatment are enlarged by about 10 times compared with those of the pristine sample. It is proposed that the formation of SWCNTs can occur in solution by formation of an SWCNT-intercalant charge complex. The specific surface area of the superbundle is almost doubled, while its micropore surface area is amplified by about 7 times. This development of microporosity results from the enhanced interstitial sites in the SWCNT superbundles.

Bilirubin adsorption on carbon nanotube surfaces has been studied to develop a new adsorbent in the plasma apheresis. Powder-like carbon nanotubes were first examined under various adsorption conditions such as temperatures and initial concentrations of bilirubin solutions. The adsorption capacity was measured from the residual concentrations of bilirubin in the solution after the adsorption process using a visible absorption spectroscopy. We found that multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) exhibit greater adsorption capacity for bilirubin molecules than that of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). To guarantee the safety of the adsorbents, we fabricated carbon nanotube sheets in which leakage of CNTs to the plasma is suppressed. Since SWCNTs are more suitable for robust sheets, a complex sheet consisting of SWCNTs as the scaffolds and MWCNTs as the efficient adsorbents. CNT/polyaniline complex sheets were also fabricated. Bilirubin adsorption capacity of CNTs has been found to be much larger than that of the conventional materials because of their large surface areas and large adsorption capability for polycyclic compound molecules due to their surface structure similar to graphite.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and oxidized MWCNTs (O-MWCNTs) were studied for the adsorption of ibuprofen (IBU) and triclosan (TCS) as representative types of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) under different chemical solution conditions. A good fitting of sorption isotherms was obtained using a Polanyi-Manes model (PMM). IBU and TCS sorption was stronger for SWCNTs than for MWCNTs due to higher specific surface area. The high oxygen content of O-MWCNT further depressed PPCP sorption. The sorption capacity of PPCPs was found to be pH-dependent, and more adsorption was observed at pHs below their pK(a) values. Ionic strength was also found to substantially affect TCS adsorption, with higher adsorption capacity observed for TCS at lower ionic strength. In the presence of a reference aquatic fulvic acid (FA), sorption of IBU and TCS was reduced due to the competitive sorption of FA on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Sorption isotherm results with SWCNTs, MWCNTs and O-MWCNTs confirmed that the surface chemistry of CNTs, the chemical properties of PPCPs, and aqueous solution chemistry (pH, ionic strength, fulvic acid) all play an important role in PPCP adsorption onto CNTs.  相似文献

We demonstrate the separation of chirality‐enriched single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by degree of surface functionalization using high‐performance CE. Controlled amounts of negatively charged and positively charged functional groups were attached to the sidewall of chirality‐enriched SWCNTs through covalent functionalization using 4‐carboxybenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate or 4‐diazo‐N,N‐diethylaniline tetrafluoroborate, respectively. Surfactant‐ and pH‐dependent studies confirmed that under conditions that minimized ionic screening effects, separation of these functionalized SWCNTs was strongly dependent on the surface charge density introduced through covalent surface chemistry. For both heterogeneous mixtures and single‐chirality‐enriched samples, covalently functionalized SWCNTs showed substantially increased peak width in electropherogram spectra compared to nonfunctionalized SWCNTs, which can be attributed to a distribution of surface charges along the functionalized nanotubes. Successful separation of functionalized single‐chirality SWCNTs by functional density was confirmed with UV‐Vis‐NIR absorption and Raman scattering spectroscopies of fraction collected samples. These results suggest a high degree of structural heterogeneity in covalently functionalized SWCNTs, even for chirality‐enriched samples, and show the feasibility of applying CE for high‐performance separation of nanomaterials based on differences in surface functional density.  相似文献

Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) often aggregate into bundles of hundreds of weakly interacting tubes. Their cross-polymerization opens new possibilities for the creation of new super-hard materials. New mechanical and electronic properties are expected from these condensed structures, as well as novel potential applications. Previous theoretical results presented geometric modifications involving changes in the radial section of the compressed tubes as the explanation to the experimental measurements of structural changes during tube compression. We report here results from molecular dynamics simulations of the SWCNTs polymerization for small diameter arm chair tubes under compression. Hydrostatic and piston-type compression of SWCNTs have been simulated for different temperatures and rates of compression. Our results indicate that large diameter tubes (10,10) are unlike to polymerize while small diameter ones (around 5 A) polymerize even at room temperature. Other interesting results are the observation of the appearance of spontaneous scroll-like structures and also the so-called tubulane motifs, which were predicted in the literature more than a decade ago.  相似文献

A new approach for the attachment of vertically-aligned shortened carbon nanotube architectures to a silicon (100) substrate by chemical anchoring directly to the surface has been demonstrated for the first time. The ordered assembly of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was accomplished by hydroxylating the silicon surface followed by a condensation reaction with carboxylic acid functionalised SWCNTs. This new nanostructure has been characterised by X-ray photoelectron, Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy as well as scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. The assembly behaviour of SWCNTs onto the silicon surface shows a fast initial step producing isolated functionalised carbon nanotubes or nanotube bundles anchored to the silicon surface followed by a slower step where the adsorbed nanotubes grow into larger aggregates via van der Waals interactions between adsorbed and solvated nanotubes. The electrochemical and optical properties of the SWCNTs directly attached to silicon have also been investigated. These new nanostructures are excellent electrochemical electrodes. They also fluoresce in the wavelength range 650-800 nm. The successful attachment of the SWCNTs directly to silicon provides a simple, new avenue for fabrication and development of silicon-based nanoelectronic, nano-optoelectronic and sensing devices. Compared to existing techniques, this new approach has several advantages including low operating temperature, low cost and the possibility of further modification.  相似文献
