Novel crosslinked anion exchange membranes based on poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) (PPEK) were successfully prepared through chloromethylation, quaternization, membrane casting and OH‐ ionic exchange reaction from the quaternized PPEK (QPPEK) membrane. The quaternization was performed with N‐methylimidazolium (MIm) as ammonium agent and tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) as crosslinking agent. The ion‐exchange capacity, swelling ratio (SR), water uptake (WU), and ionic conductivity of the QPPEK alkaline membranes have been systematically investigated. The results showed that QPPEK membranes have a high hydroxide conductivity and very low SR. For the QPPEK‐4 alkaline membrane with ion‐exchange capacity (IEC) 2.63 mmol/g, the WU was 35.8%, and the hydroxide conductivity was 0.028 S/cm at 30 °C and 0.032 S/cm at 70 °C, while its SR was only 7.6%. The thermal properties of the QPPEK alkaline membrane and CMPPEK were characterized using thermo‐gravimetric analysis measurements in a nitrogen atmosphere. The alkaline resistance of membrane QPPEK ?4 was also briefly investigated in 6 M KOH at 60 °C. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2013 , 51, 1632–1638  相似文献

Poly(phenylene oxide) block and random copolymers are synthesized by oxidative polymerization of 2,6-dimethylphenol and 2,6-diphenylphenol for potential alkaline exchange membrane application. The copolymers are functionalized on the methyl substituted repeat units through a two-step process to produce pendent quaternary ammonium cationic groups. The amount of quaternary ammonium cations and the ion exchange capacity are quantified through titration measurements. Ionic conductivity of the copolymer membranes is measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Block copolymers show increased bromide conductivity at higher ion exchange capacities compared with the random copolymer analogs. The bromide conductivity for a block copolymer film with an ion exchange capacity of 1.27 mequiv/g reaches 26 mS/cm at 90 °C and 95% relative humidity. The hydroxide conductivity for the same film was measured to be 84 mS/cm at 80 °C and 95% relative humidity. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. In this study, new anion exchange membranes (AEM) based on crosslinked polybenzimidazole (m-PBI) with quaternary ammonium groups, crosslinkable allyl groups, and hydrophobic ethyl groups as side chains are synthesized and characterized. The AEMs are crosslinked by thermal thiol-ene reaction using a dithiol crosslinker. The ion exchange capacity (IEC) values and crosslinking density were controlled by the number of quaternary ammonium groups and allyl groups, respectively. The introduction of ethyl groups improved the solubility of ionic PBIs even at very low IEC values by eliminating the hydrogen bonding interaction of imidazole rings. This method allows ionic PBIs with broad IEC values, from 0.75 to 2.55 mmol/g, to be prepared. The broad IEC values were achieved by independently controlling the numbers of quaternary ammonium groups, allyl groups, and hydrophobic ethyl groups during preparation. The crosslinked ionic PBIs revealed hydroxide conductivity from 16 to 86 mS/cm at 80°C. The wet membranes also showed excellent mechanical strength with tensile strength of 12.2 to 20.1 MPa and Young's Modulus of 0.67 to 1.45 GPa. The hydroxide conductivity of a crosslinked membrane (0.40Q0.60Et1.00Pr, IEC = 0.95 mmol/g) decreased only 7.9% after the membranes was immersed in a 1.0 M sodium hydroxide solution at 80°C for 720 h. A single fuel cell based on this membrane showed a maximum peak power density of 136 mW/cm2 with a current density of 377 mA /cm2 at 60°C.  相似文献

Synthesis and properties of anion conductive aromatic block copolymers, QPE‐bl‐3, QPE‐bl‐3 M2, and M4, containing fluorenylidene biphenylene groups as scaffold for ammonium groups are described. These copolymers share the same main chain structure, but the position and the number of ammonium groups on a fluorenyl group differ. High molecular weight quaternized block copolymers were obtained via typical chloromethylation reaction or using preaminated monomers, and were well‐characterized by 1H NMR spectra. Self‐standing bendable membranes were obtained by solution casting. QPE‐bl‐3 M4 membranes containing four ammonium groups per hydrophilic repeat unit (highest ammonium density) in the hydrophilic block exhibited well developed phase‐separated morphology, while QPE‐bl‐3 membranes containing two ammonium groups per hydrophilic repeat unit exhibited high anion conductivity. The highest anion conductivity (104 mS/cm) was obtained with QPE‐bl‐3 membrane (IEC = 2.1 meq/g) at 80 °C in water. An H2/O2 alkaline fuel cell was operable with the membrane to achieve 62 mW/cm2 of the maximum power density at 161 mA/cm2 of the current density. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with both high ionic conductivity and alkali stability are always the research focus of the AEM fuel cells. Here, a novel nonplanar polymer for AEMs manufacture, mPBI‐TP‐x‐R, with excellent hydroxide stability and satisfactory processability is reported for the first time. The serial mPBI‐TP‐x resins with steric hindrance were prepared by copolymerization among 3,3′,4,4′‐tetraaminobiphenyl, isophthalic acid and tetraphenyl‐terephthalic acid (TP) in different ratios under microwave condensation. The copolymers mPBI‐TP‐x were quaternized at N1/N3‐sites of benzimidazole unit in backbone with alkyl groups (R?CH3, C2H5, n‐C3H7, or n‐C4H9) to prepare soluble ionomers, and the corresponding membranes in hydroxyl ion form were prepared by a solution casting method and subsequent ion‐exchange process. The chemical structure of all membranes was characterized using FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The properties of ion exchange capacity, water uptake, swelling ratio, tensile strength, ionic conductivity, and alkaline stability were measured. Among the prepared membranes, the mPBI‐TP‐15%‐(n‐Bu) exhibited the excellent alkaline stability (only degradation ca. 5% under 1M NaOH aqueous solution at 60 °C for 800 h) and satisfactory OH? conductivity (46.66 mS/cm at 80 °C). The current research provides a useful exploration to commercial application of alkaline fuel cell. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 1087–1096  相似文献

Synthesis and properties of a series of ammonium‐containing terpolymers (QPAF‐3) as anion conductive membranes are reported. The QPAF‐3s composed of perfluoroalkylene, alkylene, and ammonium‐functionalized phenylene groups without heteroatom linkages in the main chain were synthesized via nickel‐mediated polycondensation reaction, followed by chloromethylation, quaternization, and ion exchange reactions. Self‐standing, bendable membranes were obtained by solution casting. The QPAF‐3 membrane with optimized terpolymer composition and ion exchange capacity (1.46 meq g?1) showed high hydroxide ion conductivity (123 mS cm?1 in water at 80 °C). The alkaline stability test in 1 M KOH for 1000 h at 80 °C and the post‐test analysis with IR spectra and tensile strength suggested that ammonium groups were likely to be decomposed while the polymer main chain was chemically more robust. The presence of the alkylene groups in the terpolymers lowered solubility, glass transition temperature, and elongation property of the resulting membranes. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Base‐stable amphiphilic diblock copolymers with a polydiallyl dimethyl ammonium hydroxide block were synthesized and characterized to quantify hydroxide‐ion transport in the hydrated state; polystyrene was the hydrophobic block. The challenge of synthesizing a copolymer comprising blocks with very different solubility behaviors was addressed by a combination of reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization and ion metathesis. Both monomers used in the polymerization are commercially available on industrial scales. Hydroxide‐ion conductivities of 0.8 mS/cm were achieved in hot‐pressed membranes immersed in water at room temperature despite relatively low water uptake (4.2 water molecules per hydroxide ion). The stability of the polydimethyl ammonium hydroxide chains was investigated in 2 M NaOD at 60 °C. 1H NMR spectroscopy studies showed no detectable degradation after 2000 hours.

Sulfonated polyaryletherketones (SPAEK) bearing four sulfonic acid groups on the phenyl side groups were synthesized. The benzophenone moiety of polymer backbone was further reduced to benzydrol group with sodium borohydride. The membranes were crosslinked by acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts reaction without sacrifice of sulfonic acid groups and ion exchange capacity (IEC) values. Crosslinked membranes with the same IEC value but different water uptake could be prepared. The optimal crosslinking condition was investigated to achieve lower water uptake, better chemical stability (Fenton's test), and higher proton conductivity. In addition, the hydrophilic ionic channels from originally course and disordered could be modified to be narrow and continuous by this crosslinking method. The crosslinked membranes, CS4PH-40-PEKOH (IEC = 2.4 meq./g), reduced water uptake from 200 to 88% and the weight loss was reduced from 11 to 5% during the Fenton test compared to uncrosslinked one (S4PH-40-PEK). The membrane showed comparable proton conductivity (0.01–0.19 S/cm) to Nafion 212 at 80°C from low to high relative humidity (RH). Single H2/O2 fuel cell based on the crosslinked SPAEK with catalyst loading of 0.25 mg/cm2 (Pd/C) exhibited a peak power density of 220.3 mW/cm2, which was close to that of Nafion 212 (214.0 mW/cm2) at 80°C under 53% RH. These membranes provide a good option as proton exchange membrane with high ion exchange capacity for fuel cells.  相似文献

2,6-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-4-methyl phenol and 1,4-bis(hydroxymethyl) benzene have been used as crosslinkers in sulphonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK DS 65%, IEC 1.84 mequiv./g) for the preparation of proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Crosslinking of SPEEK has been achieved by thermally activated bridging of the polymer chain with the hydroxymethyl group of crosslinker through condensation reaction with sulphonic acid group. The physico-chemical properties of uncrosslinked and crosslinked membrane were evaluated in terms of ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, ionic conductivity and mechanical properties. The crosslinked membrane showed controlled swelling, ionic conductivity of 25–50 mS/cm at 80 °C and good mechanical properties. The chemical stability of the crosslinked membranes was studied by Fenton's test. The % loss in weight and changes in physico-chemical properties of the treated membranes were determined.  相似文献

Robust hydroxide conducting membranes are required for long‐lasting, low‐cost solid alkaline fuel cells (AFCs). In this study, we synthesize Nafion‐based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) via amination of the Nafion precursor membrane with 1,4‐dimethylpiperazine. This initial reaction produces an AEM with covalently attached dimethylpiperazinium cations neutralized with fluoride anions, while a subsequent ion exchange reaction produces a hydroxide ion conducting membrane. These AEMs possess high thermal stability and different thermal transition temperatures compared to Nafion, while small‐angle X‐ray scattering reveals a similar ionic morphology. The hydroxide ion conductivity of the Nafion‐based AEM is fivefold lower than the proton conductivity of Nafion at 80 °C and 90% relative humidity. More importantly, the hydroxide conductivity is insensitive to drying and rehydrating the membrane, which is atypical of other AEMs with quaternary ammonium cations. The high chemical and thermal stability of this hydroxide conducting Nafion‐based AEM provides a promising alternative for AFCs. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Five kinds of ammonium groups functionalized partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether) block copolymer membranes were prepared for investigating the structure–property relationship as anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Consequently, the pyridine (PYR)‐modified membrane showed the highest alkaline and hydrazine stability in terms of the conductivity, water uptake, and dry weight. The chloromethylated precursor block copolymers were reacted with amines, such as trimethylamine, N‐butyldimethylamine, 1‐methylimidazole, 1,2‐dimethylimidazole, and PYR to provide the target quaternized poly(arylene ether)s. The structures of the polymers, as well as model compounds and oligomers were well characterized by 1H NMR spectra. The obtained AEMs were subjected to water uptake and hydroxide ion conductivity measurements and stabilities in aqueous alkaline and hydrazine media. The pyridinium‐functionalized quaternized polymers membrane showed the highest alkaline and hydrazine stability with minor losses in the conductivity, water uptake, and dry weight. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of soluble, benzimidazole‐based polymers containing sulfonic acid groups (SuPBI) has been synthesized. SuPBI membranes resist extensive swelling in water but are poor proton conductors. When blended with high ion exchange capacity (IEC) sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK), a polymer that has high proton conductivity but poor mechanical integrity, ionic crosslinks form reducing the extent of swelling. The effect of sulfonation of PBI on crosslinking in these blends was gauged through comparison with nonsulfonated analogs. Sulfonic acid groups present in SuPBI compensate for acid groups involved in crosslinking, thereby increasing IEC and proton conductivity of the membrane. When water uptake and proton conductivity were compared to the IEC of blends containing either sulfonated or nonsulfonated PBI, no noticeable distinction between PBI types could be made. Comparisons were also made between these blends and pure SPEEK membranes of similar IEC. Blend membranes exhibit slightly lower maximum proton conductivity than pure SPEEK membranes (60 vs. 75 mS cm?1) but had significantly enhanced dimensional stability upon immersion in water, especially at elevated temperature (80 °C). Elevated temperature measurements in humid environments show increased proton conductivity of the SuPBI membranes when compared with SPEEK‐only membranes of similar IEC (c.f. 55 for the blend vs. 42 mS cm?1 for SPEEK at 80 °C, 90% relative humidity). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Anion conductive aromatic multiblock copolymers, poly(arylene ether)s containing quaternized ammonio-substituted fluorene groups, were synthesized via block copolycondensation of fluorene-containing (later hydrophilic) oligomers and linear hydrophobic oligomers, chloromethylation, quaternization, and ion-exchange reactions. The ammonio groups were selectively introduced onto the fluorene-containing units. The quaternized multiblock copolymers (QPEs) produced ductile, transparent membranes. A well-controlled multiblock structure was responsible for the developed hydrophobic/hydrophilic phase separation and interconnected ion transporting pathway, as confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopic (STEM) observation. The ionomer membranes showed considerably higher hydroxide ion conductivities, up to 144 mS/cm at 80 °C, than those of existing anion conductive ionomer membranes. The durabilities of the QPE membranes were evaluated under severe, accelerated-aging conditions, and minor degradation was recognized by (1)H NMR spectra. The QPE membrane retained high conductivity in hot water at 80 °C for 5000 h. A noble metal-free direct hydrazine fuel cell was operated with the QPE membrane at 80 °C. The maximum power density, 297 mW/cm(2), was achieved at a current density of 826 mA/cm(2).  相似文献

Amphiphilic graft copolymers were prepared via the radical copolymerization of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomers with fluorocarbon or hydrocarbon acrylates in toluene with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. 1H NMR spectroscopy confirmed that the composition of the graft copolymers corresponded well to the monomer feed. For gel electrolytes prepared from the amphiphilic copolymers, the nature of the ionophobic parts of the amphiphilic graft copolymers had a great influence on the ion conductivity. Gel electrolytes based on graft copolymers containing fluorocarbon side chains showed significantly higher ion conductivity than electrolytes based on graft copolymers containing hydrocarbon groups. The ambient‐temperature ion conductivity was about 2.6 mS/cm at 20 °C for a gel electrolyte based on an amphiphilic graft copolymer consisting of an acrylate backbone carrying PEO and fluorocarbon side chains. Corresponding gels based on graft copolymers with PEO side chains and hydrocarbon groups showed an ambient‐temperature ion conductivity of about 1.2 mS/cm. The gel electrolytes contained 30 wt % copolymer and 70 wt % 1 M LiPF6 in an ethylene carbonate/γ‐butyrolactone (2/1 w/w) mixture. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Anion exchange membranes (AEMs), as the core component of the new generation anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), directly determine the performance and the lifetime of this energy conversion device. Here, AEMs with pendant multiple quaternary ammonium anchored onto the poly(styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene) (SEBS) backbone are synthesized. The comb-shaped copolymer SEBS-C16 is synthesized with N,N-dimethyl-1-hexadecylamine and chloromethylated SEBS to improve solubility, then the multi-cation crosslinker is prepared and grafted on the above backbone to fabricate a series of flexible multi-cation crosslinked SEBS-based AEMs (SEBS-C16-xC4, where x% is the ratio of the crosslinker to polystyrene block) with practical properties. The obtained SEBS-C16-20C4 membrane exhibits a microphase separated morphology with an interdomain spacing of 18.87 nm. Benefited from the ion channels, SEBS-C16-20C4 shows high conductivity of 77.78 mS/cm at 80°C. Additionally, the prepared SEBS-C16-20C4 membrane with ion exchange capacity of 2.35 mmol/g also exhibits enhanced alkaline stability (5.87% hydroxide conductivity decrease in 2 M NaOH solution at 80°C after 1,700 hr) and improved mechanical properties, compared with the non-crosslinked SEBS-C16 sample. Furthermore, AEMFC single cell performance is evaluated with the SEBS-C16-20C4 membrane, and a maximum power density of 182 mW/cm2 is achieved at 80°C under H2/O2 conditions.  相似文献

The sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone sulfone) (SPEEKS)/heteropolyacid (HPA) composite membranes with different HPA content in SPEEKS copolymers matrix with different degree of sulfonation (DS) were investigated for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Composite membranes were characterized by Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). FTIR band shifts suggested that the sulfonic acid groups on the copolymer backbone strongly interact with HPA particles. SEM pictures showed that the HPA particles were uniformly distributed throughout the SPEEKS membranes matrix and particle sizes decreased with the increment of copolymers' DS. The holes were not found in SPEEKS‐4/HPA30 (consisting of 70% SPEEKS copolymers with DS = 0.8 and 30% HPA) composite membrane after composite membranes were treated with boiling water for 24 h. Thermal stabilities of the composite membranes were better than those of pure sulfonated copolymers membranes. Although the composite membranes possessed lower water uptake, it exhibited higher proton conductivity for SPEEKS‐4/HPA30 especially at high temperature (above 100 °C). Its proton conductivity linearly increased from 0.068 S/cm at 25 °C to 0.095 S/cm at 120 °C, which was higher than 0.06 S/cm of Nafion 117. In contrast, proton conductivity of pure SPEEKS‐4 membrane only increased from 0.062 S/cm at 25 °C to 0.078 S/cm at 80 °C. At 120 °C, proton conductivity decreased to poor 0.073 S/cm. The result indicated that composite membranes exhibited high proton conductivity at high temperature. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 1967–1978, 2006  相似文献

Anion‐exchange membranes containing pendant benzimidazolium groups were synthesized from polysulfone by chrolomethylation followed by nucleophilic substitution reaction with 1‐methylbenzimidazole. The structures of the polymers were characterized by 1H‐NMR and FTIR analysis. The resulting membranes showed high thermal stability below 200 °C. The values of water uptake and swelling degree increased with the ion‐exchange capacity of the polymeric membrane. The ionic conductivity was measured by means of impedance spectroscopy in aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide (10?4?10?1 M). The results show not only a clear correlation between the membrane's electrochemical behavior with the electrolyte solution embedded in the membrane, but also with the degree of the polysulfone's chloromethylation. Thus, the ionic conductivity increased more than two orders of magnitude when the degree of chloromethylation increased from 40 to 140%. Benzimidazolium‐functionalized polysulfones exhibited better thermal, mechanical, and electrochemical properties than the widely used polymeric membranes containing quaternary ammonium groups. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To investigate the effect of crosslinking by a hydrophilic group on a sulfonated polyimide electrolyte membrane, sulfonated polyimide end‐capped with maleic anhydride was synthesized using 1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4′‐diaminobiphenyl, 2,2′‐disulfonic acid, 2‐bis [4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl] hexafluropropane and maleic anhydride. The sulfonated polyimides end‐capped with maleic anhydride were self‐crosslinked or crosslinked with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate. A series of the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides having various ratios of sulfonated polyimide and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate were prepared and compared with uncrosslinked and self‐crosslinked sulfonated polyimides. The synthesized sulfonated polyimide films were characterized for FTIR spectrum, thermal stability, ion exchange capacity, water uptake, hydrolytic stability, morphological structure, and proton conductivity. The formation of sulfonated polyimide was confirmed in FTIR spectrum. Thermal stability was good for all the sulfonated polyimides that exhibited a three‐step degradation pattern. Ion exchange capacity was the same for both the uncrosslinked and the self‐crosslinked sulfonated polyimides (1.30 mEq/g). When the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides with poly(ethylene glycol) were compared, the ion exchange capacity was decreased as 1.27 > 1.25 > 1.23 mEq/g and water uptake was increased as 23.8 < 24.0 < 24.3% with the increase in poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate content. All the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate were stable for over 200 h at 80 °C in deionized water. Morphological structure and mean intermolecular distance were obtained by WAXD. Proton conductivities were measured at 30, 50, 70, and 90 °C. The proton conductivity of the crosslinked sulfonated polyimides with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate increased with the increase in poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate content despite the fact that the ion exchange capacity was decreased. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the field of the developments of next-generation polymer electrolyte membranes, high conductivity is often regarded as the first important performance requirement. There is still a huge challenge to face, which is hard to achieve the balance between high ion conductivity (mainly related to ion-exchange capacity [IEC]) and good mechanical-dimensional stability (represented by swelling ratio [SR]). Here, a family of crosslinked block polyelectrolytes consisting of hydrophobic rigid poly(arylene ether sulfone) segments to ensure enough dimensional stability and hydrophilic poly(phenylene oxide) segments bearing long-flexible chains with high-density multications to serve as crosslinker and carrier for ion transport are prepared. The polyelectrolyte with an IEC of 3.04 mmol g−1 exhibits a high hydroxide conductivity of 126 mS cm−1 and a low SR of 8.6% at 80 °C. No obvious degradation below 200 °C is observed, and maximum tensile strength reaches 28.4 MPa. As a conclusion, these crosslinked membranes based on well-designed block polyelectrolytes exhibit an excellent combination of high ion conductivity and good mechanical-dimensional stability to meet the performance requirements for the application of anion-exchange membranes. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
