An image analysis technique in conjunction with polarising optical microscopy (POM) is proposed for assessment of the thermo-optical properties of homogeneously aligned chiral ester liquid crystals of the type ((S)-(-)-2-methylbutyl 4′-(4″-n-alkanoyloxybenzoyloxy) biphenyl-4-carboxylates, where n?=?16 or 18. Chiral ester textures are recorded as a function of temperature using POM provided with a hot-stage and a high-resolution colour camera. Temperature-dependent optical parameters, or thermo-optical properties such as optical transmission, degree of polarisation, absorption coefficient and birefringence are computed for chiral esters by analysing the texture of samples using MATLAB software. This is a simple experimental technique for observing how the optical parameters of liquid crystals change with temperature.  相似文献

Physical studies on mixture of calamitic and discotic nematic liquid crystals are meagre although they are potential for optimising physical properties. Here, we report experimental studies on the phase diagram and physical properties of mixtures of ambient temperature discotic and calamitic nematic liquid crystals. A substantial decrease in several physical properties such as birefringence, dielectric anisotropy and elastic constants are observed with increasing wt% of discotic compound. On the other hand a large increase in the rotational viscosity is observed. Based on the experimental results a simple model of mutual orientation of the rod-like and disc-like molecules is proposed.  相似文献

Triphenylene-based discotic liquid crystals, which have already been used commercially in phase compensation films to improve the viewing angle of liquid crystal display devices, also have application potential as one-dimensional charge carrier systems useful in electrical conduction, photoconduction, electroluminescence, photovoltaic solar cells, gas sensing, optical data storage and other devices. Over the past 25 years, more than 500 triphenylene derivatives have been synthesized to explore these possibilities. Cammidge and Bushby reviewed the chemistry and physical properties of about 100 triphenylene-based discotic liquid crystals prepared up to 1995. Variation of the phase transition temperatures and existence of different number of mesophases, due to the changes of -CH2 groups at the oxygen containing flexible side chain between two Schiff’s base liquid crystals compounds p-ethoxybenzylidine p-heptylaniline (EBHA) and p-butoxybenzylidine p-heptylaniline (BBHA) have been studied by using POM and DSC. Refractive indices as a function of temperature of these two compounds have also been measured by the well-known thin prism technique. To get the best accuracy of refractive indices data a comparison between the experimental data and theoretical values which are obtained from modified four-parameter model based on Vuks’ hypothesis have been done. A comparative study of some important parameters such as, optical anisotropy, orientational order parameters of these two liquid crystal compounds have also been conducted.  相似文献

Triangular ortho-phenylene ethynylene (o-PE) cyclic trimers represent a novel member of shape-persistent macrocycles. Shape-persistent cyclic structures remain of great interest as molecular components in the fields of supramolecular materials, host-guest chemistry, and materials science. Novel discotic liquid crystalline properties are reported from triangular-shaped o-PE macrocycles containing branched alkoxy- and/or triethylene glycol (TEG) side chains using polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The macrocycles self-assemble into thermotropic rectangular columnar (Colr) (for M1), hexagonal columnar (Colh) (for M2), and discotic nematic (for M3) mesophases at room temperature. This work shows clearly that electron-rich PE macrocycles can form LC materials. Alkyl side chains in M1 promote order, while hydrophilic side chains of M2 generate an amphiphilic structure that provides a different driving force for organization. The ability to create ordered self-assembling materials from these novel electron-rich macrocycles is important in nanotechnology.  相似文献

The presence of substrate-induced phases in thin films is an intriguing phenomenon with the physical and chemical factors responsible for their formation are not yet clearly understood. In this article, we present the structure and morphological changes associated with a substrate-induced phase in a discotic liquid crystal. The thin films of the discotic molecule are characterised by a combination of various X-ray diffraction methods to investigate the structural properties. Atomic force microscopy and polarised optical microscopy are used to determine the thin film morphologies. This is the first experimental proof of the presence of a substrate-induced phase in discotic liquid crystal, although they are known in thin films of molecular crystals. Moreover, we sought to decipher how the substrate-induced phase behaves with the evolution of time, temperature and changes at the interfaces. This work gives a unique example where the two-dimensional liquid-crystalline phase converts to a three-dimensional crystal plastic phase because of nucleation caused by the solid substrate over a time scale of a month or longer.  相似文献

We investigate the influence of dispersion interaction on a variety of thermodynamic properties of discotic nematic liquid crystals at the discotic nematic-isotropic transition. We report calculations for a hard oblate ellipsoidal system, superposed with an attractive interaction represented by dispersion interaction subjected to different external pressures ranging from 1 to 300 bar. We consider a model system (which simulates a discotic nematic liquid crystal) in which molecules are assumed to interact via a pair potential having both repulsive and attractive parts. The repulsion part is represented by a repulsion between hard oblate ellipsoids of revolution and is a short range, rapidly varying potential. The attractive potential, a function of centre of mass distance and relative orientation between two molecules, is represented by dispersion interaction. The properties of the reference system and first order perturbation term are evaluated using a decoupling approximation which decouples orientational from translational degrees of freedom. The inclusion of fourth and sixth rank orientational order parameters in the calculation slightly improves the result. Classical methods of structural analysis cannot be applied to liquid crystals because higher order reflections disappear during the transition from crystal to liquid crystal due to the reduction in long range orientational and translational correlations. However, in order to relate physical properties to the molecular architecture, it is essential to have information about molecular positions and orientations in the crystalline state as well as in the liquid crystalline state. In this work, the transition from crystalline to liquid crystalline phase is carefully monitored and the relationship between the original lattice and the new molecular positions found using electron diffraction. In addition to this, a new high resolution electron-microscopic technique is described in which the positions of molecules in the crystalline and the quenched discotic phase are directly imaged and the defects observed in the crystalline and LC phase compared and quantitatively analysed.  相似文献

A series of naphthalene-substituted triphenylene liquid crystals (LCs), viz. triphenylene-2,3,6,7,10,11-hexayl hexakis(6-alkenyloxy-2-naphthoate)s (HTPnN compounds) were synthesized and characterized. Alkenyloxy groups containing three to eleven carbon atoms were used as peripheral spacers in these liquid crystals. The discotic liquid crystals synthesized trap one to three water molecules depending on the length of their peripheral spacers. Differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements confirm both nematic (Nd) and rectangular disordered columnar (Colrd) phases for most of the synthesized discotic LCs. The clearing temperatures of these discotic LCs increase with increasing peripheral spacer length. A hybrid aligned HTP9N sample was investigated to evaluate its optical performance. Retardation values of this hybrid sample decrease with increasing wavelength and increase with increasing measuring angle.  相似文献

Abstract

Fourier transform infrared absorption (FTIR) spectroscopy has been used to study a discotic liquid crystal. IR spectra are reported as a function of temperature for hexapentyloxytriphenylene (H5T). The order parameter S has been determined using unpolarized radiation and by comparing the spectra of the discotic phase with that of the isotropic phase. Variations in frequency for some of the most significant bands are presented as a function of temperature.  相似文献

We established hybrid, horizontal, vertical, and vertical-twisted alignment of discotic liquid crystals on web-coating thin film. Newly developed materials are the photopolymerizable discotic liquid crystals, in order to fix desired novel alignment, the alignment promoters that deposit toward air surface during web coating, followed by drying of solvent, and then accomplish desired alignment of liquid crystals, the alignment layers that promote desired alignment of liquid crystals from the substrate side and the chiral agents, which have strong chiral powers in small amounts. Hybrid aligned discotic liquid crystal thin film has proven quite effective in expanding the viewing angle of thin film transistor liquid crystal displays.  相似文献

New discotic nematic liquid crystals have been prepared through intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the core of 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene (phloroglucinol, PG) or 1,3,5-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)benzene (THPB) and the peripheral molecules of stilbazole derivatives. The various nematic phases formed by new hydrogen bonding building blocks were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The first discotic complexes of PG and trans-4-alkoxy-4′-stilbazoles exhibited nematic columnar (NC) and hexagonal columnar phases depending on the length of alkyl chains, which were considered as the basic discotic structure. Several structural variations on the building blocks were attempted to examine their effects on the liquid crystalline properties of discotic complexes. The nematic lateral phase (NL) with enhanced intercolumnar order was observed for the complexes of PG and trans-4-cyanoalkoxy-4′ stilbazoles due probably to the strong dipole interactions between cyano groups at the end of alkoxy chains. By introducing the nonlinear structure in three arms of supramolecular discotic mesogen, a discotic nematic phase (ND) was observed for the complex of THPB and trans-4-octyloxy-4 -stilbazole. The single hydrogen bonding between phenol and pyridine moieties in this study provides a simple and effective method for preparing the rarely found discotic nematic liquid crystals.  相似文献

A facile synthesis of a novel room temperature discotic mesogenic dyad based on triphenylene and pentaalkynylbenzene linked via flexible alkyl spacer is reported. The thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) property of the compound was investigated by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The LC property of the dyad was further manipulated by preparing charge transfer (CT) complexes with trinitrofluorenone (TNF). The compound self-assembles into a columnar hexagonal mesophase and exhibits an excellent fluorescent emission property which has possible potential for various opto-electronic applications.  相似文献

A homologous series of fluoro-substituted chiral liquid crystals derived from (S)-lactic acid and alkoxyethanols were prepared for investigation. Mesophases and their corresponding transition temperatures were identified by polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The compounds exhibit a broad temperature range in the ferroelectric chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase; in particular, compounds with shorter alkyl chain lengths have an SmC* phase at ambient temperature. The physical properties of the ferroelectric SmC* phase, such as switching current, spontaneous polarization, optical tilt angle and electro-optical response, were also measured. The effects of fluoro substituent on the mesophases and physical properties of the chiral liquid crystals are discussed.  相似文献
