The presence of substrate-induced phases in thin films is an intriguing phenomenon with the physical and chemical factors responsible for their formation are not yet clearly understood. In this article, we present the structure and morphological changes associated with a substrate-induced phase in a discotic liquid crystal. The thin films of the discotic molecule are characterised by a combination of various X-ray diffraction methods to investigate the structural properties. Atomic force microscopy and polarised optical microscopy are used to determine the thin film morphologies. This is the first experimental proof of the presence of a substrate-induced phase in discotic liquid crystal, although they are known in thin films of molecular crystals. Moreover, we sought to decipher how the substrate-induced phase behaves with the evolution of time, temperature and changes at the interfaces. This work gives a unique example where the two-dimensional liquid-crystalline phase converts to a three-dimensional crystal plastic phase because of nucleation caused by the solid substrate over a time scale of a month or longer.  相似文献

This paper deals with the influence of the nature and number of solid interfaces on the alignment of the columns in a semiconducting discotic liquid crystal. The solid substrates have been characterized in terms of their roughness and surface energy. The alignment of the discotic liquid crystal columns on these substrates has been determined by optical microscopy under crossed polarizers and by tapping-mode atomic force microscopy. The nature of the substrates has negligible influence on the alignment. The key parameter is the confinement imposed to the film. These surprising observations are explained by the antagonist alignment role of gas and solid interfaces.  相似文献

We have applied high-angle annular dark-field microscopy to the characterization of the structure of template-grown nanotubes composed of a polymer and a discotic liquid crystalline material. Selective staining of the liquid crystal phase with ruthenium tetroxide was used to develop adequate Z-contrast that allows us to distinguish between the two phases. At appropriate staining conditions, we could clearly visualize, in the annular dark-field mode, a 5-15-nm thin liquid crystalline layer precipitated on the inner surface of the polymer tubes. Cryo-electron diffraction has shown high alignment of the discotic columns within the layer parallel to the tube axis. However, although the polymer/liquid crystal phase separation is almost complete, the wetting behavior of the polymer in relation to the template appears to be sensitively influenced by kinetic factors.  相似文献

Conformationally flexible cores that generate large free volume when stacked and have an insufficient number of side-chains for filling the lateral space around each core have been proposed as design criteria for discotic liquid crystals that display nematic rather than columnar mesophases. Presented here are 1,3,5-triazines substituted with three thiophene carboxylate ester groups that fulfil these design criteria. Nine derivatives with linear, branched, and chiral ester chains were synthesised and their mesomorphism was studied by polarised optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and powder x-ray diffraction. Triazines with linear propyl to octyl chains display monotropic nematic discotic mesophases that crystallise within hours or days or when mechanically agitated. Packing structures for the nematic phases are proposed based on the single crystal structure of the ethyl ester. Their unusually slow nucleation and crystal growth can be attributed to the large number of possible low energy conformations that arise from the conformationally flexible core. Incorporation of racemic and chiral branched chains expectedly lowers the melting points of these derivatives but, unexpectedly, enhances nucleation and crystal growth well above the temperature ranges of their hypothetical nematic phases. Chiral nematic discotic mesophases were obtained for binary mixtures of derivatives with chiral branched and linear chains.  相似文献

Wide view (WV) film is an important material in the polariser. It is a hybrid-aligned, discotic liquid crystal (DLC) on an alignment layer on the tri-acetyl cellulose film, which is used as compensation film in twisted nematic (TN) mode liquid crystal display (LCD). The relation between the alignment direction of the DLC in the WV film and the rubbing direction of the polyimide on the glass substrate in the TN mode LCD was investigated. The results indicated that the contrast ratio (CR) of the TN mode LCD can be increased by adjusting this angle . When an 88°?rubbing angle was used in this work, the CR of the TN mode LCD could reach 1000:1 and the horizontal and vertical viewing angles were 170 and 160°, respectively.  相似文献

A new photo-alignment layer using a crosslinked discotic compound was demonstrated. This discotic compound exhibits excellent solubility in common organic solvents, the possibility of low temperature processing and good thermal stability. A linearly polarized long wavelength ultraviolet (LPUV) light (λ = 350 nm) was used to initiate the crosslinking process and induce liquid crystal alignment on the discotic film surface. The induced LC directors were found parallel to the electric field direction of the LPUV light. A 1.2° pre-tilt angle was achieved using a single exposure at a 30° oblique angle.  相似文献

A polymer stabilised liquid crystal film with the order and the molecular alignment of a smectic-A phase at a microscopic level, but with the planar molecular alignment of a chiral nematic phase at a macroscopic level, was prepared. This kind of order and alignment of the molecules of the liquid crystal resulted in the film reflecting circularly polarised incident light with the bandwidth of the spectrum over the wavelength range of 300–2500 nm.  相似文献

Adding external, remote, and dynamic control to self-organized superstructures with desired properties is an important leap necessary in leveraging the fascinating molecular subsystems for employment in applications. Here two novel light-driven dithienylethene chiral molecular switches possessing remarkable changes in helical twisting power during photoisomerization as well as very high helical twisting powers were found to experience photochemically reversible isomerization with thermal stability in both isotropic organic solvents and anisotropic liquid crystal media. When doped into a commercially available achiral liquid crystal host, the chiral switch was able to either immediately induce an optically tunable helical superstructure or retain an achiral photoresponsive liquid crystal phase whose helical superstructure was induced and tuned reversibly upon light irradiation. Moreover, reversible light-directed red, green, and blue reflection colors with thermal stability in a single thin film were demonstrated.  相似文献

A technique which combines image analysis and polarising optical microscope (POM) is a useful tool for the physical investigation of discotic liquid crystals, such as hexabutoxytriphenylene and hexahexyloxytriphenylene. This investigation includes the phase transitions, optical properties and order parameter as a function of temperature. Textures of discotic liquid crystals are captured as a function of temperature using POM. These microscopic textures are analysed using MATLAB software to compute statistical parameters, Legendre moments, optical parameters and order parameters of discotic liquid crystal samples. Compared with other techniques in the literature, the proposed methodology is a reliable and very simple technique for the physical investigation of liquid crystals.  相似文献

A new type of photo-crosslinkable methacrylate polymer liquid crystal (PLC) with a coumarincontaining mesogenic side group was synthesized and applied as the photoalignment layer for low molecular mass nematic liquid crystals. Linearly polarized ultraviolet light was directed onto a thin film of PLC under various exposure conditions. When a film was irradiated at room temperature, a small negative optical anisotropy was generated due to angular-selective photo-crosslinking. In contrast, when the film was exposed near the clearing temperature of the PLC, the induced anisotropy was positive due to thermally enhanced photoinduced reorientation of the side groups. The aggregation of the mesogenic groups was also observed when the irradiation was carried out in the liquid crystalline temperature range of the PLC. The LC alignment on the photoreacted film was greatly dependent on these irradiation conditions. It was made clear that the LC alignment was regulated by the interaction among the LC, the photo-crosslinked side groups and the remaining mesogenic side groups, and that the aggregated mesogenic groups inhibited the LC alignment.  相似文献

The hierarchical self-assembly of disc-shaped molecules leads to the formation of discotic liquid crystals. These materials are of fundamental importance not only as models for the study of energy and charge migration in self-organized systems but also as functional materials for device applications such as, one-dimensional conductors, photoconductors, light emitting diodes, photovoltaic solar cells, field-effect transistors and gas sensors. The negative birefringence films formed by polymerized nematic discotic liquid crystals have been commercialized as compensation foils to enlarge the viewing angle of commonly used twisted nematic liquid crystal displays. To date the number of discotic liquid crystals derived from more than 50 different cores comes to about 3000. This critical review describes, after an in-depth introduction, recent advances in basic design principles and synthetic approaches towards the preparation of most frequently encountered discotic liquid crystals.  相似文献

The influence of the alignment layer on V-shaped switching in thin homogeneous cells of a chiral smectic liquid crystal were studied by means of electro-optic and switching current measurements.Severalpolyimides withdifferent chemicalstructures wereusedas thealignment layer in thin homogeneous cells; V-shaped switching was observed with some of them and W-shaped switching with others. It was also shown that the switching current constantly flows during the V-shaped transmittance change. In order to clarify this effect of the alignment layer on V-shaped switching, polyimide films with various polarity and thickness were examined. It is concluded that thick alignment layers assist liquid crystal materials in realizing V-shaped switching, even if the materials are not ideal for this process.  相似文献

Charge accumulation was enhanced by depositing a thick polymer aligning layer for the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules. A sub-hertz frequency dielectric relaxation process is detected in smectic C*, in the chiral nematic and a few degrees into the isotropic phase, due to the charge accumulation between the polymer layer and the ferroelectric liquid crystal material. Research of numerical calculation and theoretical considerations have been applied in relation to the electrical double layer effect on the threshold voltage of liquid crystals in order to understand the drop in threshold voltage often observed at low frequencies. Decreased resistivity of an alignment film was found to contribute to this threshold voltage drop. Moreover, dielectric dispersion due to the electrical double layer at the interface between the liquid crystal and alignment film layers is thought to exist in the frequency range in which the drop in threshold voltage was obtained experimentally. Therefore Debye type dielectric dispersion of the electrical double layer in the system consisting of the nematic liquid crystal and the alignment film also influences the threshold behaviour at low frequencies.  相似文献
