The electronic transitions occurring in 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)-3-hydroxyflavone (DMAF) and 2-furanyl-3-hydroxychromone (FHC) were investigated using the TDDFT method in aprotic and protic solvents. The solvent effect was incorporated into the calculations via the PCM formalism. The H-bonding between solute and protic solvent was taken into account by considering a molecular complex between these molecules. To examine the effect of the H-bond on the ESIPT reaction, the absorption and emission wavelengths as well as the energies of the different states that intervene during these electronic transitions were calculated in acetonitrile, ethanol and methanol. The calculated positions of the absorption and emission wavelengths in various solvents were in excellent agreement with the experimental spectra, validating our approach. We found that in DMAF, the hydrogen bonding with protic solvents makes the ESIPT reaction energetically unfavourable, which explains the absence of the ESIPT tautomer emission in protic solvents. In contrast, the excited tautomer state of FHC remains energetically favourable in both aprotic and protic solvents. Comparing our calculations with the previously reported time-resolved fluorescence data, the ESIPT reaction of DMAF in aprotic solvents is reversible because the emitting states are energetically close, whereas in FHC, ESIPT is irreversible because the tautomer state is below the corresponding normal state. Therefore, the ESIPT reaction in DMAF is controlled by the relative energies of the excited states (thermodynamic control), while in FHC the ESIPT is controlled probably by the energetic barrier (kinetic control).  相似文献

The absorption and fluorescence emission of pyridoxamine were studied as function of pH and solvent properties. In the ground state, pyridoxamine exhibits different protonated forms in the range of pH 1.5–12. Fluorescence studies showed that the same species exist at the lowest singlet excited state but at different pH ranges. The phenol group is by ca. 8 units more acidic in the excited state than in the ground state. On the other hand, the pyridine N‐atom is slightly more basic in the lowest excited state than in the ground state. Excitation spectra and emission decays in the pH range of 8–10 indicate the protonation of the pyridine N‐atom by proton transfer from the amine group, in the ground and singlet excited states. Spectroscopic studies in different solvents showed that pyridoxamine in the ground or excited states exhibits intramolecular proton transfer from the pyridine N‐atom to the phenol group, which is more favorable in solvents of low hydrogen‐bonding capacity. The cationic form with the protonated phenolic group, which emits at shorter wavelength, is the dominant species in nonprotic solvents, but, in strong proton‐donor solvents, both forms exist. The fluorescence spectra of these species exhibit blue shift in protic solvents. These shifts are well‐correlated with the polarity and the H‐donor ability of the solvent.  相似文献

Preferential solvation of a solvatochromic probe has been studied in binary mixtures comprising of a non-protic and a protic solvent. The non-protic solvents employed are carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)), acetonitrile (AcN) and N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) and the protic solvents are methanol (MeOH) and ethanol (EtOH). The probe molecule exhibits different spectroscopic characteristics depending upon the properties of the solubilizing media. The observed spectral features provide an indication of the microenvironment immediately surrounding the probe. Solvatochromic shifts of the ground and excited states of the probe were analysed by monitoring the charge transfer absorption band and the fluorescence emission spectra in terms of the solute-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions. Fluorescence emission spectra show the dual emission due to excited state proton transfer nature of the probe molecule. The effect of solvent and the excitation energy on dual emission are also studied. The observed magnitude of the Stokes shift in the above solvents has been used to deduce experimentally the dipole moment ratio of the probe molecule for the excited state to the ground state. The dipole moment of excited state is higher than the ground state.  相似文献

Ground and excited state inter- and intramolecular proton transfer reactions of a new o-hydroxy Schiff base, 7-ethylsalicylidenebenzylamine (ESBA) have been investigated by means of absorption, emission and nanosecond spectroscopy in different protic solvents at room temperature and 77 K. The excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) is evidenced by a large Stokes shifted emission (approximately 11000 cm(-1)) at a selected excited energy in alcoholic solvents. Spectral characteristics obtained reveal that ESBA exists in more than one structural form in most of the protic solvents, both in the ground and excited states. From the nanosecond measurements and quantum yield of fluorescence we have estimated the decay rate constants, which are mainly represented by nonradiative decay rates. At 77 K the fluorescence spectra are found to be contaminated with phosphorescence spectra in glycerol and ethylene glycol. It is shown that the fluorescence intensity and nature of the species present are dependent upon the excitation energy.  相似文献

Absorption and emission spectra of 9-N,N-dimethylaniline decahydroacridinedione (DMAADD) have been studied in different solvents. The fluorescence spectra of DMAADD are found to exhibit dual emission in aprotic solvents and single emission in protic solvents. The effect of solvent polarity and viscosity on the absorption and emission spectra has also been studied. The fluorescence excitation spectra of DMAADD monitored at both the emission bands are different. The presence of two different conformation of the same molecule in the ground state has lead to two close lying excited states, local excited (LE) and charge transfer (CT), and thereby results in the dual fluorescence of the dye. A CTstate involving the N,N-dimethylaniline group and the decahy droacridinedione chromophore as donor and acceptor, respectively, has been identified as the source of the long wavelength anomalous fluorescence. The experimental studies were supported by ab initio time dependent-density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations performed at the B3LYP/6-31G* level. The molecule possesses photoinduced electron transfer (PET) quenching in the LE state, which is confirmed by the fluorescence lifetime and fluorescent intensity enhancement in the presence of transition metal ions.  相似文献

The geometries, spectroscopic and electronic structures properties of a series of heteroleptic phosphorescent Ir(III) complexes including N981, N982, N983, N984 have been characterized by density functional theory calculations. The excited‐state properties of the Ir(III) complexes have been characterized by CIS method. The ground‐ and excited‐state geometries were optimized at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ and CIS/LANL2DZ levels, respectively. By using the time‐dependent density functional theory method, the absorption and phosphorescence spectra were calculated based on the optimized ground‐ and excited‐state geometries, respectively. The results show that the absorption and emission data agree well with the corresponding experimental results. The calculated results also revealed that the nature of the substituent at the 4‐position of the pyridyl moiety can influence the distributions of HOMO and LUMO and their energies. In addition, the charge transport quality has been estimated approximately by the calculated reorganization energy (λ). Our result also indicates that the positions of the substitute groups not only change the transition characters but also affect the charge transfer rate and balance, and complex N982 is a very good charge transfer material for green OLEDs.

The time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) method was performed to investigate the excited-state hydrogen-bonding dynamics of fluorenone (FN) in hydrogen donating methanol (MeOH) solvent. The infrared spectra of the hydrogen-bonded FN-MeOH complex in both the ground state and the electronically excited states are calculated using the TDDFT method, since the ultrafast hydrogen-bonding dynamics can be investigated by monitoring the vibrational absorption spectra of some hydrogen-bonded groups in different electronic states. We demonstrated that the intermolecular hydrogen bond C=O...H-O between fluorenone and methanol molecules is significantly strengthened in the electronically excited-state upon photoexcitation of the hydrogen-bonded FM-MeOH complex. The hydrogen bond strengthening in electronically excited states can be used to explain well all the spectral features of fluorenone chromophore in alcoholic solvents. Furthermore, the radiationless deactivation via internal conversion (IC) can be facilitated by the hydrogen bond strengthening in the excited state. At the same time, quantum yields of the excited-state deactivation via fluorescence are correspondingly decreased. Therefore, the total fluorescence of fluorenone in polar protic solvents can be drastically quenched by hydrogen bonding.  相似文献

In this work, the time‐dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) method was carried out to investigate the hydrogen‐bonded intramolecular charge‐transfer excited state of 2‐(4′‐N,N‐dimethylaminophenyl)imidazo[4,5‐b]pyridine (DMAPIP) in methanol (MeOH) solvent. All the geometric conformations of the ground state and locally excited (LE) state and the twisted intramolecular charge‐transfer (TICT) state for isolated DMAPIP and its hydrogen‐bonded complexes have been optimized. At the same time, the absorption and fluorescence spectra of DMAPIP and the hydrogen‐bonded complexes in different electronic states are also calculated. We theoretically demonstrated for the first time that the intermolecular hydrogen bond formed between DMAPIP and MeOH can induce the formation of the TICT state for DMAPIP in MeOH solvent. Therefore, the two components at 414 and 506 nm observed in the fluorescence spectra of DMAPIP in MeOH solvent were reassigned in this work. The fluorescence peak at 414 nm is confirmed to be the LE state. Furthermore, the red‐shifted shoulder at 506 nm should be originated from the hydrogen‐bonded TICT excited state. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Comput Chem, 2010  相似文献

In this paper, we described the synthesis and characterization of new diphenylethylene bearing imino group. We concentrated particularly on the investigation of the possibility of the excited state intramolecular charge transfer (ESIPT) of the new dyes experimentally and theoretically. The absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy of the dyes were determined in various solvents. The results showed that the maximal absorption wavelength of 2‐[(4′‐N,N‐dimethylamino‐diphenylethylene‐4‐ylimino)methyl]phenol ( C1 ) and 4‐[(4′‐N,N‐dimethylamino‐diphenylethylene‐4‐ylimino)methyl]phenol ( C2 ) exhibited almost independence on the solvent polarity. While as contrast, the maximal fluorescence wavelength of the dyes showed somewhat dependence on the solvent polarity. In particular, C1 displayed well‐separated dual fluorescence spectroscopy. The second fluorescence peak was characterized with an "abnormal" fluorescence emission wavelength in aprotic solvents with large Stokes shift (ca. 140 nm in THF), which was much more than normal Stokes shift (ca. 30 nm in THF). This emission spectroscopy could be assigned to ESIPT emission. On the other hand, the ESIPT fluorescence of C1 was much reduced or lost in the protic solvents. While, only normal fluorescence emission was detected in various solvents. Although the absorption maxima of C1 exhibited about 10 nm red‐shift with respect to those of C2 , the normal fluorescence maxima of C1 and C2 were almost identical in various solvents. These results suggested that C1 could undergo ESIPT, but C2 was not able to proceed ESIPT. The molecular geometry optimization of phototautomers in the ground electronic state (S0) was carried out with HF method (Hartree‐Fock) and at DFT level (Density Functional Theory) using B3LYP both, while the CIS was employed to optimize the geometries of the first singlet excited state (S1) of the phototautomers of C1 and C2 respectively. The properties of the ground state and the excited state of the phototautomers of C1 and C2 , including the geometrical parameter, the energy, the frontier orbits, the Mulliken charge and the dipole moment change were performed and compared completely. The data were analyzed further based on our experimental results. Furthermore, the absorption and fluorescence spectra were calculated in theory and compared with the measured ones. The rate constant of internal proton transfer (9.831×1011 s?1) of C1 was much lower than that of salicylidene methylamine ( C3 , 2.045×1015 s?1), which was a typical Schiff base compound and was well demonstrated to undergo ESIPT easily under photoexcitation.  相似文献

Spectral and photophysical investigations of 4′-(p-aminophenyl)-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine (APT) have been performed in various solvents with different polarity and hydrogen-bonding ability. The emission spectra of APT are found to exhibit dual fluorescence in polar solvents, which attributes to the local excited and intramolecular charge transfer states, respectively. The two-state model is proven out for APT in polar solvent by the time-correlated single photon counting emission decay measurement. Interestingly, the linear relationships of different emission maxima and solvent polarity parameter are found for APT in protic and aprotic solvents, because of the hydrogen bond formation between APT and alcohols at the amino nitrogen N25. Furthermore, the effects of the complexation of the metal ion with tpy group of APT and the hydrogen bond formation between APT with methanol at the terpyridinenitrogen N4—N8—N14 are also presented. The appearance of new long-wave absorption and fluorescence bands indicates that a new ground state of the complexes is formed.  相似文献

The solvent effects on the electronic absorption and fluorescence emission spectra of several coumarins derivatives, containing amino, N,N-dimethyl-amino, N,N-diethyl-amino, hydroxyl, methyl, carboxyl, or halogen substituents at the positions 7, 4, or 3, were investigated in eight solvents with various polarities. The first excited singlet-state dipole moments of these coumarins were determined by various solvatochromic methods, using the theoretical ground-state dipole moments which were calculated by the AM1 method. The first excited singlet-state dipole moment values were obtained by the Bakhshiev, Kawski-Chamma-Viallet, Lippert-Mataga, and Reichardt-Dimroth equations, and were compared to the ground-state dipole moments. In all cases, the dipole moments were found to be higher in the excited singlet-state than in the ground state because of the different electron densities in both states. The red-shifts of the absorption and fluorescence emission bands, observed for most compounds upon increasing the solvent polarity, indicated that the electronic transitions were of π-π* nature.  相似文献

Steady-state fluorescence and time-resolved absorption measurements in pico- and femtosecond time domain have been used to investigate the dynamics of hydrogen bond in the excited singlet (S(1)) state of fluorenone in alcoholic solvents. A comparison of the features of the steady-state fluorescence spectra of fluorenone in various kinds of media demonstrates that two spectroscopically distinct forms of fluorenone in the S(1) state, namely the non-hydrogen-bonded (or free) molecule as well as the hydrogen-bonded complex, are responsible for the dual-fluorescence behavior of fluorenone in solutions of normal alcoholic solvents at room temperature (298 K). However, in 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE), a strong hydrogen bond donating solvent, emission from only the hydrogen-bonded complex is observed. Significant differences have also been observed in the temporal evolution of the absorption spectroscopic properties of the S(1) state of fluorenone in protic and aprotic solvents following photoexcitation using 400 nm laser pulses. An ultrafast component representing the solvent-induced vibrational energy relaxation (VER) process has been associated with the dynamics of the S(1) state of fluorenone in all kinds of solvents. However, in protic solvents, in addition to the VER process, further evolution of the spectroscopic and dynamical properties of the S(1) state have been observed because of repositioning of the hydrogen bonds around the carbonyl group. In normal alcohols, two different kinds of hydrogen-bonded complex of the fluorenone-alcohol system with different orientations of the hydrogen bond with respect to the carbonyl group and the molecular plane of fluorenone have been predicted. On the other hand, in TFE, formation of only one kind of hydrogen-bonded complex has been observed. These observations have been supported by theoretical calculations of the geometries of the hydrogen-bonded complexes in the ground and the excited states of fluorenone. Linear correlation between the lifetimes of the equilibration process occurring because of repositioning of the hydrogen bonds and Debye or longitudinal relaxation times of the normal alcoholic solvents establish the fact that, in weakly hydrogen bond donating solvents, the hydrogen bond dynamics can be described as merely a solvation process. Whereas, in TFE, hydrogen bond dynamics is better described by a process of conversion between two distinct excited states, namely, the non-hydrogen-bonded form and the hydrogen-bonded complex.  相似文献

An elaborated theoretical investigation on the optical and electronic properties of three fluorene‐based platinum(II) and iridium(III) cyclometalated complexes Pt‐a , Ir‐a and Ir‐b is reported. The geometric and electronic structures of the complexes in the ground state are studied with density functional theory and Hartree Fock approaches, while the lowest triplet excited states are optimized by singles configuration interaction (CIS) methods. At the time‐dependent density functional theory (TD‐DFT) level, molecular absorption and emission properties were calculated on the basis of optimized ground‐ and excited‐state geometries, respectively. The computational results show that the appearance of triphenylamino (TPA) moiety at the 9‐position of fluorene ring favors the hole‐creation and leads to red‐shifts of absorption and emission spectra. Moreover, Pt‐a and Ir‐b are nice hole‐transporting materials whereas Ir‐a has good charge‐transfer balance, which render them useful for the realization of efficient OLEDs (Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes).  相似文献

The possibility of excited‐state protomeric shifts in the biologically important molecule, alloxan, is investigated. We have focused on the S1 and T1 excited states of alloxan and its hydroxy tautomers. Modifications brought in by excitation on the relative stabilities, activation barriers, and optimized geometries, computed at the MNDO, AM1, and PM3 levels of approximation, have been discussed for both excited electronic states. The absorption and fluorescence spectra for the three tautomers are also discussed. Results show significant changes in the geometries on excitation, although the changes are similar for the singlet and triplet excited states. Though the relative stability orders do not change, the 2‐hydroxy tautomer is stabilized, while the 4‐hydroxy tautomer gets destabilized on excitation. The excited states are (n,π*) states, involving the promotion of a nonbonding oxygen lone pair from the CO? CO? CO moiety, which explains why the oxygens of this group become less basic and the 4‐hydroxy tautomer gets destabilized on excitation. However, the activation barriers do not reduce significantly on excitation, and this precludes the possibility of ground‐ or excited‐state proton transfer in the gas phase. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Photophysical Properties of the Cationic Form of Neutral Red   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract— Photophysical properties of the cationic form of neutral red (NRH+), a phenazine-based dye of biological importance, have been investigated in several protic and aprotic solvents using optical absorption, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence and picosecond laser flash photolysis techniques. Absorption and fluorescence characteristics of the dye in protic solvents indicate the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the NRH+ and solvent molecules in the ground state as well as in the excited state. Measurements of the fluorescence lifetime in normal and heavy water also support the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Time-resolved transient absorption spectra obtained in the picosecond laser flash photolysis experiments show only the absorption band due to the Sn← S1 absorption. The picosecond transient absorption results do not indicate any spectral shifts attributable to the hydrogen bond formation dynamics between the excited NRH+ and the protic solvent molecules. It is inferred that the hydrogen bonding dynamics are much faster than the time resolution of our picosecond setup (∼35 ps).  相似文献

The ground and excited state properties of luciferin (LH2) and oxyluciferin (OxyLH2), the bioluminescent chemicals in the firefly, have been characterized using density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent DFT (TDDFT) methods. The effects of solvation on the electronic absorption and emission spectra of luciferin and oxyluciferin were predicted with a self‐consistent isodensity polarized continuum model of the solvent using TDDFT. The S0→S1 vertical excitation energies in the gas phase and in water were obtained. Optimizations of the excited state geometries permitted the first predictions of the fluorescence spectra for these biologically important molecules. Shifts in both of the absorption and emission spectra on proceeding from the gas phase to aqueous solution were also predicted.  相似文献

Abstract— The effect of solvent polarity on the electronic absorption and fluorescence properties of neutral red (NR), a phenazine-based dye of biological importance has been investigated in several neat and mixed solvents. An unusual dual solvatochromic behavior has been observed that reveals the existence of two closely spaced electronic excited states in NR. In low-polarity solvents the fluorescence of the NR is mainly emitted from the localized excited state, whereas in high-polarity solvents the emission from the charge transfer state dominates. The dipole moments of the localized and charge transfer states of NR have been estimated from the solvatochromic shifts. The dipole moment of the localized excited state (4.8 D) is only slightly higher than that of the ground state (2.0 D), while that of the charge transfer state is drastically higher (17.5 D). Fluorescence quantum yields and the life-times of NR have been determined in different solvents and correlated with the solvatochromic shifts.  相似文献

Semiempirical (MNDO and PM3) molecular orbital calculations have been undertaken to study the structures of the ground and excited states of 2,5-distrylpyrazine dye to assess its activity as a laser dye. In the ground and first excited singlet states, the trans-trans structure of C2h symmetry is the most stable structure in the gas phase and in DMSO, which agrees with the experimental findings. Upon excitation, the flexibility of the molecule decreases, leading to a subsequent decrease in the radiationless deactivation pathway and this increases the fluorescence efficiency of DSP. The absorption, excitation, and emission spectra have been calculated at the MNDO level using the PM3 optimized geometries in DMSO. At this level the agreement between theory and experiment is quite good. An estimated absorption band at 377 nm (expt 380 nm) is assigned to the S0→S1 transition. The excited state absorption band at 457 nm (expt 460 nm) is assigned to the S1→S12 transition. The emission band at 458 nm (expt 460 nm) is assigned to the S′1→S′0 transition. The overlap between the emission and the excited-state absorption spectra is presumably the main reason behind the reduced laser activity of the investigated dye. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
