Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is the discharge involved in corona treatment, widely used in industry to increase the wettability or the adhesion of polymer films or fibers. Usually DBD's are filamentary discharges but recently a homogeneous glow DBD has been obtained. The aim of this paper is to compare polypropylene surface transformations realized with filamentary and glow DBD in different atmospheres (He, N2, N2 + O2 mixtures) and to determine the relative influence of both the discharge regime and the gas nature, on the polypropylene surface transformations. From wettability and XPS results it is shown that the discharge regime can have a significant effect on the surface transformations, because it changes both the ratio of electrons to gas metastables, and the space distribution of the plasma active species. This last parameter is important at atmospheric pressure because the mean free paths are short (m). These two points explain why in He, polypropylene wettability increase is greater by a glow DBD than by a filamentary DBD. In N2, no significant effect of the discharge regime is observed because electrons and metastables lead to the same active species throughout the gas bulk. The specificity of a DBD in N2 atmosphere compared to an atmosphere containing oxygen is that it allows very extensive surface transformations and a greater increase of the polypropylene surface wettability. Indeed, even in low concentration and independently of the discharge regime, when O2 is present in the plasma gas, it controls the surface chemistry and degradation occurs.  相似文献

Recently, a glow like dielectric controlled barrier discharge (GDBD) working at atmospheric pressure has been observed. Such a discharge could replace a filamentary dielectric controlled barrier discharge (FDBD) used in corona treatment systems to improve the wettability or the adhesion of polymers. So it is of interest to compare these two types of discharges and their respective effect on a polymer surface. This is the aim of an extensive study we have undertaken. The first step presented here is the comparison of a filamentary discharge in air with a glow discharge in helium. Helium is the most appropriate gas to realize a glow discharge at atmospheric pressure. Air is the usual atmosphere for a corona treatment. The plasma was characterized by emission spectroscopy and current measurements. The surface transformations were indicated by the water contact angle, the leakage current measurement and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results show that the helium GDBD is better than air FDBD to increase polypropylene wettability without decreasing the bulk electrical properties below a certain level. Contact angle scattering as well as leakage current measurements confirm that the GDBD clearly results in more reproducible and homogeneous treatment than the FDBD.  相似文献

We have demonstrated that, with simple pH adjustment, volatile drugs such as methamphetamine, amphetamine, 3,4‐methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), ketamine, and valproic acid could be analyzed rapidly from raw biofluid samples (e.g. urine and serum) without dilution, or extraction, using atmospheric pressure ionization. The ion source was a variant type of atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) that used a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) to generate the metastable helium gas and reagent ions. The sample solution was loaded in a disposable glass pipette, and the volatile compounds were purged by nitrogen gas to be reacted with the metastable helium gas. The electrodes of the DBD were arranged in such a way that the generated glow discharge was confined within the discharge tube and was not exposed to the analytes. A needle held at 100–500 V was placed between the ion‐sampling orifice and the discharge tube to guide the analyte ions into the mass spectrometer. After pH adjustment of the biofluid sample, the amphiphilic drugs were in the form of a water‐insoluble oil, which could be concentrated on the liquid surface. By gentle heating of the sample to increase the evaporation rate, rapid and sensitive detection of these drugs in raw urine and serum samples could be achieved in less than 2 min for each sample. The so called high frequency plasma pencil is a source of highly active environment (electrons, ions, reactive radicals, excited atoms, and molecules) which can be generated at atmospheric, reduced or increased pressure, preserving a good control of the performance. The discharge can be either unipolar or bipolar. The properties of unipolar atmospheric pressure discharges are discussed on the basis of simple theoretical considerations and electric probe measurements. The plasma pencil discharge is studied by optical emission spectroscopy in the gas phase at atmospheric pressure as well as immersed in liquid using argon as a working gas. From the emission spectra the electron, vibrational and rotational temperatures are calculated for various distances from the plasma pencil electrode. Several technological applications like restoration of archaeological glass and metal artifacts, fragmentation of molecules for microelectrophoresis and plasma polymerization are summarized. An advantage of the plasma pencil is that it can be easily operated and controlled.  相似文献

Glow discharges are kind of plasmas which are used in many fields of application, including analytical spectrometry. This review addresses both the fundamental aspects and analytical applications of glow discharges. In the first part, a systematic overview of the most important plasma processes is presented. To obtain better insight into the complexity of the glow discharge, both mathematical modeling and experimental plasma diagnostics can be carried out. Therefore, the models that were developed for a glow discharge are presented and typical results (e.g. three-dimensional density profiles, fluxes and energy distributions of the various plasma species, the electric field and potential distributions, information about collision processes in the plasma and about sputtering at the cathode, etc.) are summarized. Moreover, the most important plasma diagnostic techniques for glow discharges are discussed. In the second part, an overview is given of the various analytical applications of glow discharges.  相似文献

A new approach to metal surface nitriding using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma at atmospheric pressure is presented in this paper. Results of the study show that the plasma nitriding at atmospheric pressure using DBDs is realizable. Harder and thicker compound layer and diffusion layer on the treated surface has been formed in shorter treatment time comparing with the conventional vacuum plasma nitriding, Increasing the applied voltage will facilitate the formation of a thicker nitrided layer using the DBD. The nitrided layer acquired by this new approach is mainly composed of ɛ phase and γ′ phase, and the crystal grains of the ɛ phase is fine and has high dislocations density.  相似文献

Non equilibrium plasmas such as glow discharges have become a commonly used tool in direct surface and interface analysis of solid materials. The application of pulsed glow discharges to material analysis has been studied by several research groups over the last 20 years. Two European projects, EMDPA and GLADNET currently work on the analytical applications of glow discharges, giving a particular attention to pulsed discharges. This review demonstrates the advantages of pulsed discharge operation by showing how the specific excitation and ionisation processes observed during the plasma ignition phase and the afterglow can be used for analytical applications.  相似文献

A new atomizer based on atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma was specially designed for atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) in order to be applied to the measurement of arsenic. The characteristics of the DBD atomizer and the effects of different parameters (power, discharge gas, gas flow rate, and KBH4 concentration) were discussed in the paper. The DBD atomizer shows the following features: (1) low operation temperature (between 44 and 70 °C, depending on the operation conditions); (2) low power consumption; (3) operation at atmospheric pressure. The detection limit of As(III) using hydride generation (HG) with the proposed DBD-AFS was 0.04 μg L−1. The analytical results obtained by the present method for total arsenic in reference materials, orchard leaves (SRM 1571) and water samples GBW(E) 080390, agree well with the certified values. The present HG-DBD-AFS is more sensitive and reliable for the determination of arsenic. It is a very promising technique allowing for field arsenic analysis based on atomic spectrometry.  相似文献

Novel types of non-thermal plasma sources at atmospheric pressure based on multi-pin DC (direct current) diffusive glow discharge and AC (alternative current) streamer barrier corona have been elaborated and tested successfully for cold surface treatment of polymer films [polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET),] and polyester fabric. Results on physical properties ofdischarges mentioned and output energy characteristics of new plasma sources as well as data on after-treatment changes in wettability of films and fabrics are presented. The main goal of this study was to find out the experimental conditions for gas discharge and surface processing to achieve a remarkable wettability change for a short treatment time.  相似文献

Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)-based plasma deposition at atmospheric pressure, using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA, methacrylic acid-[2,3-epoxy-propyl ester]) as a prototype precursor was investigated in order to evaluate the applicability of dielectric barrier discharges to obtain plasma polymers with a high degree of structural retention of the starting precursor. Using pulsed excitation of the discharge, up to about 90% of the epoxy groups of GMA can be retained in plasma polymers obtainableat deposition rates in the order of 3–5nm/s. Preliminary investigations of the mechanism of film formation under pulsed plasma conditions indicate that the reaction of intact monomer molecules withsurface radicals generated during the pulses play a prominent role.  相似文献

Polyester tire cord surfaces have been modified by plasma at low temperature and atmospheric pressure. The surface treatment has been executed by various nonequilibrium discharges, namely by barrier discharge, atmospheric pressure glow discharge and gliding arc. The polymeric multicord sewing threads treated by this procedure have been used in the same form as in industry, i.e., with the protecting oil films on their surface. The surface properties have been investigated by electron spin resonance spectroscopy and by measuring their contact angle with various liquids; partially the zeta potential measurements have been used, too. Further tests have been done at an industrial testing impregnation line using the common technology and conditions, on both plasma treated and untreated fibers. Finally, the standard H-tests and peel-tests have been used to characterize the fiber adhesion to usual testing rubbers.  相似文献

The plasma technology served as a tool in unconventional catalysis has been used in natural gas conversion, because the traditional catalytic methane oxidative coupling reaction must be performed at high temperature on account of the stability of methane molecule. The focus of this research is to develop a process of converting methane to C2 hydrocarbons with non-equilibrium plasma technology at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. It was found that methane conversion increased and the selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons decreased with the voltage. The optimum input voltage range was 40-80 V corresponding to high yield of C2 hydrocarbons. Methane conversion decreased and the selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons increased with the inlet flow rate of methane. The proper methane flow rate was 20-40 ml/min (corresponding residence time 10-20 s). The experimental results show that methane conversion was 47% and the selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons was 40% under the proper condition using atmospheric DBD cold plasma technology. It was found that the breakdown voltage of methane VB was determined by the type of electrode and the discharge gap width in this glow discharge reactor. The breakdown voltage of methane VB,min derived from the Paschen law equation was established.  相似文献

Hydride generation has been used with a gas-sampling glow discharge (GSGD) and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) for the determination of arsenic in solution. Helium, neon, hydrogen, and argon glow discharges have been successfully generated and characterized. Current–pressure–voltage curves were generated for each discharge in the presence and absence of hydride generation. The arsenic detection limit for each of the discharges was found to be 0.60 (HeGSGD), 3.8 (NeGSGD) and 6.4 ppb (H2GSGD). The HeGSGD was found to be the most attractive source for arsenic determination due to the lower detection limit, higher sensitivity and greater stability. The figures of merit for these discharges were also compared to those obtained with hydride generation-inductively coupled plasma TOFMS. Noise power spectra obtained for the neon GSGD indicated that no discernible discrete-frequency (whistle-noise) components were present in the analyte signal.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to show the possibility to synthesize silicon-based deposits on a polypropylene substrate, using a glow dielectric barrier discharge at atmospheric pressure, and to correlate the gas phase behavior with the properties of the thin film deposits. The discharge is generated in a mixture of nitrous oxide and silane, diluted in nitrogen. The influence of the [N2O]/[SiH4] ratio on the layer characteristics is mainly studied. Deposits are analyzed by XPS, SSIMS, AFM and wetting angle measurements. The discharges are also characterized by their optical emission spectra. Measurements are made as a function of the distance from the gas inlet, and they allow one to correlate these spectra with the film thickness and its chemical composition. Finally, chemical kinetics of the reactive gas decomposition reactions are proposed.  相似文献

Radio-frequency (RF), atmospheric-pressure glow discharge (APGD) plasmas with bare metallic electrodes have promising prospects in the fields of plasma-aided etching, deposition, disinfection and sterilization, etc. In this paper, an induced gas discharge approach is proposed for obtaining the RF, atmospheric-pressure, γ-mode, glow discharges with pure nitrogen or air as the primary plasma-working gas using bare metallic electrodes. The discharge characteristics, including the discharge mode, the breakdown voltage and discharge voltage for sustaining α mode and/or γ mode discharges, of the RF APGD plasmas of helium, argon, nitrogen, air or their mixtures using a planar-type plasma generator are presented in this study. The uniformity (no filaments) of the discharges is confirmed by the images taken by an iCCD with a short exposure time (10 ns). The effects of different gap spacings and electrode materials on the discharge characteristics, the variations of the sheath thickness and the electron number density are also studied in this paper.  相似文献

Real-time analysis of gases for volatile organic compounds or elements is required for a number of applications. Direct sampling-mass spectrometry (DS-MS) is one approach to solve these analytical problems. This article reviews various instrumental configurations and applications of DS-MS. Inlet systems employed for DS-MS include membranes, microtrap interfaces, atmospheric sampling glow discharge ionization, atmospheric pressure ionization, microwave plasma ionization, and capillary restrictors. The use of laser-based ionization methods for DS-MS is described, including resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization and single photon ionization.  相似文献

This study considers treatment of real city rain sewage under the action of an oxygen dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) at atmospheric pressure in the presence or absence of TiO2 catalyst in the plasma zone. The DBD discharge has been shown to have high decomposition efficiency (up to 98%) for oil hydrocarbons, phenols and synthetic surfactants. The discharge action resulted in the decrease of heavy metal (Pb, Cd, Fe, Mn) content as well. In a plasma-catalytic hybrid process, the efficiency of organic substances decomposition was higher than efficiency for the DBD treatment without catalyst.  相似文献

Plasma polymerization of trimethylsilane (TMS) was carried out in a direct current (dc) glow discharge and was investigated by optical photography and plasma diagnostic techniques including optical emission spectroscopy and residual gas analysis. The nature of the glow formed in TMS discharge, which deposited plasma polymers, was significantly different from that of a simple gas such as Ar. In an Ar discharge, the dominant glow was the well known negative glow, which developed at a distinctive distance from the cathode, whereas the cathode surface remained in the dark space. In strong contrast to this situation, in TMS dc discharge the dominant or primary glow was the cathode glow, which appeared at the cathode surface. At a similar location where the Ar negative glow appeared, a very feeble glow as a secondary glow was also observed in TMS glow discharge. The deposition results and plasma diagnosis data evidently indicated that in TMS glow discharge, the cathode glow resulted from the low‐energy electron‐impact dissociation of TMS molecules that creates polymerizable species, but the negative glow was related to nonpolymerizable species such as hydrogen atoms and molecules. In this article, the cathode glow formed in glow discharges of organic compounds was designated as the dissociation glow according to its underlying plasma reactions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
