Linearly polarized (LP) UV photoreaction of a photo-crosslinkable side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer (SLCP) containing photoreactive cinnamoyl and biphenyl mesogenic groups ( 1 ) was studied. The optical anisotropy of the polymer film was induced by the LP-UV photoreaction and was investigated by the temperature-controlled polarized UV absorption spectroscopy and polarized FT-IR measurements. The reorientation of the nonreacted mesogenic groups along to the Ê direction of the incident LP-UV light during the photoreaction occurred at the LC temperature range of the polymer, and the induced birefringence Δn was about 0.02. Because of the high-density photo-crosslinking, the LP-UV photoreacted film showed orientational stability up to 160°C. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Three liquid crystalline N-substituted pyrroles were synthesized from 6-(1-pyrrolyl)hexanol with phenolic derivatives having a mesogenic core of cyclohexylbenzene or biphenyl by Mitsunobu reaction. These pyrroles had two anodic peaks at 1.4 and 1.8 V (vs. SCE). The former was due to an oxidation of the pyrrole moiety and the latter was due to an oxidation of the mesogenic moiety. These pyrrole monomers were polymerized by electrochemical and chemical methods. The potentiostatic method and the chemical method using FeCl3 gave a soluble and fusible polymer, respectively. A polymer having a mesogenic core of cyclohexyl benzene obtained by the chemical method and a polymer having a mesogenic core of biphenylketone obtained by the potentiostatic method had a liquid-crystalline phase. The phase was identified as smectic A by polarizing microscopy and XRD analysis. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 36: 2691–2698, 1998  相似文献

The work focuses on the design, synthesis, and characterization of a series of mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymers (MJLCPs) based on the octyl substituted biphenyl mesogenic core through different linkage groups. The molecular characterizations of the polymers obtained by conventional free radical polymerization were performed with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis. Their thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) behaviors were investigated in detail by a combination of various techniques, such as polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and 1D and 2D wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Our results showed that all the polymers were thermally stable, and their LC phases were greatly dependent on the linking groups between the biphenyl mesogenic core and terminal alkyl group substituent. Polymers with ether/ester or ether linkage group exhibited an unusual phase behavior with temperature increasing, tetragonal columnar nematic LC phase, or columnar nematic phase developed at high temperatures for the polymers transformed into amorphous phase during cooling process, showing a re‐entrant phase behaviors. However, polymers with ester linkage group were not LC with temperature varied. It is illustrated that subtle changes in the molecular structure brought about tremendous variation of the LC phase properties for MJLCPs. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A series of side-chain liquid-crystalline polymers, poly[N-(4-methoxyazobenzene- 4′-oxyalkyl)ethyleneimine](PEnZO), has been synthesised in which the number of methylene units in spacers varies from two to six. The structures of the synthesised monomers and polymers were confirmed by infrared (IR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. The thermal properties of these polymers have been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical macroscopic (POM) X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The test results indicated that the obtained polymers exhibited thermotropic liquid-crystalline mesomorphism of nematic type with schlieren textures. It was observed that the thermal behaviours of the polymers were strongly dependent on the degree of substitution and the length of spacers. Polymers containing less than 57% of mesogenic groups did not exhibit mesogenic phase and resembled amorphous polymer. A more pronounced odd–even effect in the melting points and their enthalpy changes was observed on increasing the spacer length in which the odd members displayed lower values, which were also slightly dependent on the substitution degree of polymers. The mesomorphic temperature ranges of odd members were wider than those of even members. The decomposition temperatures of copolymers were near 230°C.  相似文献

A monomer of the AB‐type and a bifunctional comonomer of the AA‐type containing two 2‐oxazoline rings and a biphenyl structural unit were prepared from the corresponding carboxylic acids via their esterification and subsequent amidation with an aminoalcohol. The cyclization of an amide to 2‐oxazoline structure was achieved by treatment with thionyl chloride followed by liberation of the free base with sodium hydrocarbonate in an aqueous solution. The prepared monomers were used for the polyaddition polymerization of the AB‐type monomer having a 2‐oxazoline and phenol group bound on adjacent rings of the biphenyl structure in solution. The monomer of the AA‐type was used for AA+BB‐type polyaddition reactions with aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. Both types of polymerizations have been performed in melt and in solution. The structures of the polymers were determined, and the thermal properties of the polymers were evaluated. Liquid‐crystalline (LC) structures of the prepared polymers were observed by DSC measurements and optical microscopy. The polyaddition reactions of the monomers containing a 2‐oxazoline ring and a biphenyl unit represent a new efficient way for the preparation of a biphenyl unit containing poly(ether amide)s and poly(ester amide)s. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

A series of liquid-crystalline polystyrene derivatives with pendant mesogenic groups has been prepared and characterized. The side-chain is connected to the polystyrene backbone by a methyleneoxyhexyloxy spacer. The mesogenic group is a 4-alkoxy substituted biphenyl group. The length of the alkoxy end-group varied from a methoxy group to an octyloxy group. The polymers were synthesized by a radical reaction. Molar masses (M n) varied between 17,000 and 46,000, with a molar mass distribution between 1.6 and 2.0. All the polymers were liquid-crystalline, with enantiotropic smectic phases. The polymers were characterized with polarizing microscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and calorimetry.  相似文献

Starting from 3,5‐diamino benzoic acid, 2‐hydroxy propyl[3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}]benzyl ether, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer with flexible ether group, and 2‐hydroxy propyl[3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}]benzoate, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer with ester group, were synthesized for the first time. Using the same starting compound, 3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}benzylalcohol, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer, was synthesized through a highly efficient short‐cut route. Step‐growth polymerization of these monomers at individually optimized experimental conditions results in the formation of hyperbranched polyurethanes with and without ether and ester groups. Copolymerizations of these monomers with functionally similar AB monomers were also carried out. The molecular weights of the polymers were determined using GPC and the values (Mw) were found to vary from 1.5 × 104 to 1.2 × 106. While hyperbranched polyurethanes having no ether or ester group were found to be thermally stable up to 217 °C, hyperbranched poly(ether–urethane)s and poly(ester–urethane)s were found to be thermally stable up to 245 and 300 °C, respectively. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of polyurethane was reduced significantly when introducing ether groups into the polymer chain, whereas Tg was not observed even up to 250 °C in the case of poly(ester–urethane). Hyperbranched polyurethanes derived from all the three different AB2 monomers were soluble in highly polar solvents and the copolymers showed improved solubility. Polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether of molecular weight 550 and decanol were used as end‐capping groups, which were seen to affect the thermal, solution, and solubility properties of polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work we present the results from studies on novel poly(arylene ether ketone)s, including gas permeability, wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Poly(arylene ether ketone)s containing 2,2′- and 3,3′-dibenzoylbiphenyl (DBBP) moieties were characterized to study the effect of biphenyl substitution on gas transport properties. Gas permeabilities of naphthalene-containing poly(arylene ether ketone)s were also measured. Higher permeabilities were observed for polymers prepared with 6F-BPA, compared to 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene (HPF). The naphthalene-containing polymers exhibited higher permeabilities than the DBBP polymers, except for a polymer having the 2,2′-DBBP and tetramethylbiphenyl moieties. Based on our work, and results reported in the literature, the 3,3′-DBBP polymers showed the lowest permeabilities for DBBP-containing poly-(arylene ether ketone)s. The low permeabilities are due to more efficiently packed chains brought on by greater flexibility of the backbone, compared to the other polymers studied. DMA studies confirmed the higher barriers to rotation which are believed to be responsible for 2,2′-DBBP polymers having similar selectivities compared to 3,3′-DBBP polymers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of side-chain liquid-crystalline polymers (SCLCPs) containing triphenylene mesogen, in which the long alkyl tail Tp connected directly with main chain, were synthesized successfully. The chemical structures of the monomers were confirmed by 1H NMR and mass spectrometry. The phase behaviors of polymers were investigated by a combination of techniques, including DSC, POM, 1D/2D WAXD, and SAXS. The experimental results suggested that the type of main chain played an important role in the LC phase structures of these polymers. Because of the steric effects of side chains and the coupling effects between the Tp moieties and the main chains, all the polymers exhibited columnar phase. However, the SCLCPs with poly(vinyl benzene methyl ether) or polynorbornene backbone displayed hexagonal columnar phase, while those with polyacrylate or polymethacrylate backbone presented columnar nematic phase, and the one with poly(vinyl benzoate) main chain showed rectangular columnar phase. Moreover, the clearing temperatures (Ti) changed with change in main chain. Especially, the Ti of the SCLCP with polymethacrylate backbone was above 300 °C. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Alkene monomers containing phenyl or biphenyl carboxylate benzoate ester based on a mesogenic group of varied lengths of carboxyl oligo (ethanediol) monomethyl ethers as the terminal were synthesized. They were grafted onto poly(methyl-hydrosiloxane) by the platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation process. The thermal transition temperatures and mesophase textures of monomers and of polymers were characterized by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), x-ray diffraction, and polarized optical microscopy with a hot stage. The factors governing mesophase textures and thermal transition temperatures are discussed. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

As the minimum features in semiconductor devices decrease, it is a new trend to incorporate copper and polymers with dielectric constant less than 3.0 to enhance the performance of the devices. Two fluorinated polymers, poly(biphenyl perfluorocyclobutyl ether) (BPFCB) and poly(1,1,1-triphenyl ethane perfluorocyclobutyl ether) (PFCB), are newly developed polymers with dielectric constants below 3.0. These two polymers have a similar backbone structure, but PFCB has the capability of crosslinking. To know the implications of these two polymers in the semiconductor industry, properties that are important for the integral reliability of Integral Circuits (IC), such as thermal and mechanical properties, should be understood. This comparative study shows that the crosslinking in perfluorocyclobutane aromatic ether polymer can reduce vertical thermal expansion and increase glass transition temperature (Tg) while water absorption, crystalline-like phase, and dielectric constant are slightly increased. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two series of vinyl‐terminated side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyethers containing ethylene oxide or glycidyl aromatic carboxylates as spacers were synthesized. The mesogenic cores were 4,4′‐biphenyl or 2,6‐naphthalene moieties. The polymers were synthesized by chemically modifying poly(epichlorohydrin) or poly(epichlorohydrin)‐poly(ethylene oxide) with the corresponding mesogenic carboxylic acids or with mixtures of these acids and the nonmesogenic non‐crosslinkable analogous 4‐biphenyl‐ and 2‐naphthalenecarboxylic acids. In most cases the degree of modification achieved was higher than 90%. The polymers were characterized by chlorine analysis, IR, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies; viscosimetry; size exclusion chromatography; multi‐angle laser light scattering; and thermogravimetric analysis. The liquid‐crystal behavior, shown by most polymers, was examined by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X‐ray diffraction on mechanically oriented samples. The crosslinking of most polymers was done by peroxide‐type initiators that led to liquid‐crystal thermosets or elastomers. The freezing of the mesophase organization on the crosslinked materials was confirmed by POM and X‐ray diffraction. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel liquid‐crystalline epoxy resin combining biphenyl and aromatic ester‐type mesogenic units, diglycidyl ether of 4,4′‐bis(4‐hydroxybenzoyloxy)‐3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethyl biphenyl, was synthesized. Its spectroscopic structure, thermal properties, and phase structures were investigated with NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and polarized light microscopy (PLM), respectively. The curing agent, diaminodiphenylsulfone, was chosen to investigate the curing behavior by means of DSC and PLM during isothermal and nonisothermal processes. Only one exothermal peak appeared in the isothermal DSC curves. Birefringence was also observed during the curing processes and preserved after postcuring. Compared with short rigid‐rod and flexible epoxies, the cured liquid‐crystalline epoxy resin that was obtained displayed special thermal stability according to thermogravimetric analysis because of its long rigid‐rod mesogenic unit and bulky methyl groups. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyimide (SLCPI) was prepared via copolycondensation from 3,5‐diamino‐benzonic‐4′‐biphenyl ester, 4,4′‐diamino‐ biphenyl ether, and 3,3′,4,4′‐oxydiphthalic dianhydride. The energy‐minimized structure and liquid crystallinity of SLCPI were investigated by molecular modeling, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, and polarized optical microscopy, respectively. The results indicated that this polyimide (PI) with side‐chain mesogenic units exhibited a nematic NI phase. Because of the in situ self‐reinforcement of side‐chain mesogenic units, the improved tensile strength and modulus of PI films reached 270% and 300%, respectively. The coefficient of thermal expansion of films decreased by 40%. DSC and thermogravimetric analyses indicated that the phase‐transition temperature of SLCPI was above 240 °C, and the 5% weight‐loss temperature was above 520 °C. Moreover, copolycondensation of two diamines with dianhydride and incorporation of pendent mesogenic units diminished the regularity and symmetry of main chains; as a result, SLCPI exhibits good film processability. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP) was synthesized by the addition of the mesogenic monomer to poly(methylsiloxane) with Pt catalyst. When the benzene/cyclohexane mixtures were permeated through the LCP membranes by pervaporation at various temperatures, the permeation rate increased with increasing benzene concentration in the feed solution and permeation temperature. Though the LCP membranes exhibited a benzene permselectivity, a mechanism of the permeation and separation for the benzene/cyclohexane mixtures was different in the glassy, liquid-crystalline and isotropic state of the LCP membranes. These results suggested that the permselectivity was fairly influenced by the change of the LCP membrane structure, that is, a state transformation. It was found that a balance of the orientation of mesogenic groups and flexibility of siloxane chains is very important for the permeability and selectivity. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. When a benzene/cyclohexane mixture of 10 wt % benzene was permeated through side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP) membranes by pervaporation at various temperatures, the permeation rate increased with increasing permeation temperature. The LCP membranes also exhibited a benzene permselectivity. The permselectivity for the benzene/cyclohexane mixture through the LCP membrane was different in the glassy, liquid-crystalline, and isotropic states. The LCP membrane had different apparent activation energies for permeation at each state. LCP membrane in the liquid-crystalline state had the highest apparent activation energy of the three states. Results suggest that the benzene permselectivity was influenced by changes in the LCP membrane structure, i.e., a state-transformation. It was found that a balance of the orientation of mesogenic groups and the flexibility of the siloxane chains was very important for benzene permselectivity. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. New methacrylate monomers with carbazole moieties as pendant groups were synthesized by multistep syntheses starting from carbazoles with biphenyl substituents in the aromatic ring. The corresponding polymers were prepared using a free‐radical polymerization. The novel polymers contain N‐alkylated carbazoles mono‐ or bi‐substituted with biphenyl groups in the aromatic ring. N‐alkyl chains in polymers vary by length and structure. All new polymers were synthesized to evaluate the structural changes in terms of their effect on the energy profile, thermal, dielectric, and photophysical properties when compared to the parent polymer poly(2‐(9H‐carbazol‐9‐yl)ethyl methacrylate). According to the obtained results, these compounds may be well suited for memory resistor devices. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 70–76  相似文献

Optically pure malolactonate monomers containing biphenyl mesogenic groups with either an ethylene or a hexamethylene spacer were prepared from optically pure malic acid and polymerized with alkylaluminoxane catalysts to form a series of new chiral side chain liquid-crystalline polymers, which contained the chiral centres in the backbone. The mesogenic malolactonate monomers were determined to be optically pure by 1H NMR spectroscopy of the β-lactone complexed with a chiral europium shift reagent. Both the methylaluminoxane and isobutylaluminoxane catalysts gave polymers having bimodal molecular weight distributions, the latter catalyst yielded a larger amount of the higher molecular weight fraction than the former. The polymers showed high optical rotations, high degrees of isotactic stereoregularity, and enantiotropic liquid-crystalline properties, all of which were influenced by the molecular weight distribution. Copolymers of malolactonate monomers with different spacers were also prepared and characterized.  相似文献

A novel combined main‐chain/side‐chain liquid crystalline polymer based on mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystal polymers (MJLCPs) containing two biphenyls per mesogenic core of MJLCPs main chain, poly(2,5‐bis{[6‐(4‐butoxy‐4′‐oxy‐biphenyl)hexyl]oxycarbonyl}styrene) (P1–P8) was successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The chemical structure of the monomer was confirmed by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. The molecular characterizations of the polymer with different molecular weights (P1–P8) were performed with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their phase transitions and liquid‐crystalline behaviors of the polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). We found that the polymers P1–P8 exhibited similar behavior with three different liquid crystalline phases upon heating to or cooling in addition to isotropic state, which should be related to the complex liquid crystal property of the side‐chain and the main‐chain. Moreover, the transition temperatures of liquid crystalline phases of P1–P8 are found to be dependent on the molecular weight. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of optically pure mesogenic ester precursors, and the malolactonate monomers containing mesogenic alcohols obtained from them were prepared and polymerized to homopolymers and copolymers. The liquid-crystalline properties of the precursors, monomers and polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy and wide angle X-ray diffraction. The liquid-crystalline properties of the chiral mesogenic precursors and monomers were only slightly influenced by the chemical structure, configuration and the alkyl spacer length of the mesogenic alcohol substituent of the ester. The precursor, 1-[6-(4'-hexyloxy-4-biphenylyl)oxyhexyl] hydrogen (S)-O-mesylmalate (V-(S)-6) formed smectic E and smectic A phases on melting, while the monomer, 6-(4'-hexyloxy-4-biphenylyl)oxyhexyl (R)-malolactonate (II-(R)-6) showed only a crystal-isotropic phase transition. In contrast, the homopolymer of the latter exhibited a chiral smectic C phase. Copolymers from 2-(4'-hexyloxy-4-biphenylyl)oxyethyl (R)-malolactonate (II-(R)-2) also formed chiral smectic C phases.  相似文献
