Mioellization of aqueous mixture of sodium octyl sulfonate ( C8As )/ cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (C12As)( CTAB in the presence of sodium bromide has been studied by surface tension measurement. Nonideal solution theory has been used to calculate the molecular interaction parameters (βM and βs). The oil-aqueous interfacial tensions of C12As/ CTAB, C8As/CTAB, C12As/dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) systems were also measured. We studied the influence of the surfactant concentration, surfactant molar fraction ratio, hydrocarbon chain length, added NaCl and alcohol concentration on the interfacial tension.  相似文献

We have used dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) to simulate the system of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) monolayer at the oil/water interface. The interfacial properties (interfacial density, interfacial thickness, and interfacial tension), structural properties (area compressibility modulus, end to end distance, and order parameter), and their dependence on the oil/water ratio and the surfactant concentration were investigated. Three different microstructures, spherical oil in water (o/w), interfacial phase, and water in oil (w/o), can be clearly observed with the oil/water ratio increasing. Both the snapshots and the density profiles of the simulation show that a well defined interface exists between the oil and water phases. The interface thickens with CTAB concentration and oil/water ratio. The area compressibility modulus decreases with an increase in the oil/water ratio. The CTAB molecules are more highly packed at the interface and more upright with both concentration and oil/water ratio. The root mean square end-to-end distance and order parameter have a very weak dependence on the oil/water ratio. But both of them show an increase with CTAB concentration, indicating that the surfactant molecules at the interface become more stretched and more ordered at high concentration. As CTAB concentration increases further, the order parameter decreases instead because the bending of the interface. At the same time, it is shown that CTAB has a high interfacial efficiency at the oil/water interface.  相似文献

Measurements of contact angles (theta) of aqueous solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and propanol mixtures at constant CTAB concentration equal to 1x10(-5), 1x10(-4), 6x10(-4) and 1x10(-3) M on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were carried out. The obtained results indicate that the wettability of PTFE by aqueous solutions of these mixtures depends on their composition and concentration. They also indicate that, contrary to Zisman, there is no linear relationship between cos theta and the surface tension (gamma(LV)), but a linear relationship exists between the adhesional (gamma(LV)cos theta) and surface tension of aqueous solutions of CTAB and propanol mixtures. Curve gamma(LV)cos theta vs gamma(LV) has a slope equal -1 suggesting that adsorption of CTAB and propanol mixtures and the orientation of their molecules at aqueous solution-air and PTFE-aqueous solution interfaces is the same. Extrapolating this curve to the value of gamma(LV)cos theta corresponding to theta=0, the value of the critical tension of PTFE wetting equal 23.4 mN/m was determined. This value was higher than that obtained from contact angles of n-alkanes on PTFE surface (20.24 mN/m). The difference between the critical surface tension values of wetting probably resulted from the fact that at cos theta=1 the PTFE-aqueous solution of CTAB and propanol mixture interface tension was not equal to zero. This tension was determined on the basis of the measured contact angles and Young equation. It appeared that the values of PTFE-aqueous solution of the CTAB and propanol mixtures interface tension can be satisfactorily determined by modified Szyszkowski equation only for solutions in which probably CTAB and propanol molecules are present in monomeric form. However, it appeared that using the equation of Miller et al., in which the possibility of aggregation of propanol molecules in the interface layer is taken into account, it is possible to describe the PTFE-solution interfacial tension for all systems studied in the same way as by the Young equation. On the basis of linear dependence between the adhesional and surface tension it was established that the work of adhesion of aqueous solution of CTAB and propanol mixtures does not depend on its composition and concentration, and the average value of this work was equal to 46.85 mJ/m(2), which was similar to that obtained for adhesion of aqueous solutions of two cationic surfactants mixtures to PTFE surface.  相似文献

Adsorption isotherms have been determined at the water/oil interface for five biphasic systems involving surfactants (non-ionic and ionic) present in both phases at partition equilibrium. The systems studied were polyoxyethylene(23)lauryl ether (Brij35) in water/hexane and four ionic surfactants, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and a series of three tetraalkylammonium dodecylsulfate (TEADS, TPADS, and TBADS) in water/CH 2Cl 2. Interfacial tension measurements performed at the water/air and water/oil interfaces provided all the necessary information for the determination of the adsorption parameters by taking partition into account. These measurements also allowed the comparison of the adsorption properties at both interfaces which showed an increase of the adsorption equilibrium constant and a decrease of the maximum surface concentration at the water/oil interface compared to water/air. The values of the critical aggregation concentration showed, in all cases, that only the surfactant dissolved in the aqueous phase contribute to the decrease of the water/oil interfacial tension. In the case of the four ionic surfactants, the critical aggregation concentration obtained in biphasic conditions were lowered because of the formation of mixed surfactant-CH 2Cl 2 aggregates.  相似文献

The effect of silicate anions, from dilute aqueous tetramethylammonium silicate (TMASi) solutions (0-3.0 mmol L(-1) in silicon), on the formation of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles was investigated by means of a series of simple conductivity experiments. These two compounds are used in the preparation of mesoporous silicate molecular sieves. An increase in the monovalent silicate anion concentration decreases the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of CTAB, as might be expected from the decreased repulsive forces between the polar heads of the surfactant molecules. However, the decrease in cmc values is less pronounced than that observed in the presence of bromide ions, suggesting that Br- binds more strongly than Si(OH)3O- at the micelle surface. Through the ion-exchange formalism, a selectivity coefficient for Si(OH)3O-/Br- exchange of 0.30+/-0.03 was estimated from the conductivity data. This value compares well with that of 0.4+/-0.1 also determined in this work by the pyrene fluorescence quenching method. The experimental results were used to rationalize the formation of a surfactant supramolecular-templated mesoporous molecular sieve at extremely low surfactant (0.63 mmol L(-1)) and silicate (4.00 mmol L(-1)) concentrations.  相似文献

In this article, the effect of molecular weight on the interfacial tension and interfacial dilational viscoelasticity of polystyrene sulfonate/surfactant adsorption films at the water-octane interface have been studied by spinning drop method and oscillating barriers method respectively. The experimental results show that different interfacial behaviors can be observed in different type of polyelectrolyte/surfactant systems. PSS/cationic surfactant CTAB systems show the classical behavior of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte/surfactant systems and can be well explained by electrostatic interaction. Molecular weight of PSS plays a crucial role in the nature of adsorption film. The complex formed by CTAB and higher molecular weight PSS, which has larger dimension and stronger interaction, results in higher dilational modulus at lower surfactant bulk concentration. In the case of PSS/anionic surfactant SDS systems, the co-adsorption of PSS at interface through hydrophobic interaction with alkyl chain of SDS leads to the increase of interfacial tension and the decrease of dilational modulus at lower surfactant bulk concentration. For PSS/nonionic surfactant T × 100 systems, PSS may form a sublayer contiguous to the aqueous phase, which has little effect on interfacial tension but slightly decreases dilational modulus.  相似文献

The interfacial dilational viscoelastic properties of hydrophobically associating block copolymer composed of acrylamide (AM) and a low amount of 2‐ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA) (<1.0 mol%) with a hydrolyzed degree of about 1.5–2.0% at the octane‐water interfaces were investigated by means of two methods: the interfacial tension response to sinusoidal area variations (oscillating barriers method) and the relaxation of an applied stress (interfacial tension relaxation method) respectively. The influence of cationic surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) on the dilational viscoelastic properties was studied. The results obtained by oscillating barriers method showed that dilational modulus decreased moderately with the increase of CTAB concentration. The results obtained by interfacial tension relaxation measurements showed that two main relaxation processes exist in the interface at 7,000 ppm polymer concentration: one is the fast process involving the exchange of hydrophobic blocks between the proximal region and distal region in the interface; the other is the slow relaxation process involving conformational changes of polymer chain in the interface. By adding CTAB, the slow process changed obviously due to the strong electrostatic interaction between oppositely charged surfactant and hydrolyzed part of polymer chain. Only when the CTAB concentration was close to the “equal charge point,” the associations formed mainly by the hydrophobic interaction like that in SDS/polymer system appeared and the characteristic time of fast process decreased obviously. The information of relaxation processes obtained from interfacial tension relaxation measurements can explain the results from dilational viscoelasticity measurements very well.  相似文献

Advancing contact angle (theta) measurements were carried out for aqueous solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetylpyridinium bromide (CPyB) mixtures on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The obtained results indicate that the wettability of PTFE and PMMA by aqueous solutions of CTAB and CPyB mixtures depends on the composition and concentration of the mixture; however, synergism in the wettability does not exist. In the range of low concentrations of aqueous solution mixtures there is a linear dependence between the contact angle and composition of the mixtures, but at a concentration close to CMC a deviation from linear dependence is observed. In contrast to Zisman, there is no linear dependence between costheta and the surface tension of aqueous solution of CTAB and CPyB mixtures, but a linear dependence exists between the adhesional and surface tension, and these lines have a slope -1 and -0.34 for PTFE and PMMA, respectively, which suggests that adsorption of CTAB and CPyB mixtures at water-air and PTFE-water is the same, and the orientation of the CTAB and CPyB molecules at both interfaces in the saturated monolayer should also be the same. Adsorption of these mixtures at water-air interface is considerably higher than at PMMA-water interface, and CTAB and CPyB molecules should be parallelly oriented to PMMA surface in the saturated monolayer. Extrapolation of the straight lines to the points corresponding to the surface tension of aqueous solution, which completely spreads over the PTFE and PMMA surface, gives a critical surface tension of wetting equal to 23.44 and 33.13 mN/m, respectively. The value of 23.44 mN/m is higher than that of the surface tension of PTFE, but the value of 33.13 is lower than that of Lifshitz-van der Waals components of PMMA surface tension. On the basis of the critical surface tension, the surface tension of PTFE and PMMA, the Young equation, and thermodynamic analysis of the adhesion work of aqueous solution of surfactant to polymer surface, it was found that for PTFE and PMMA the changes of the contact angle of aqueous solution of two cationic surfactants mixtures on their surfaces as a function of the solution concentration resulted only from the decrease of the polar component of the solution surface tension.  相似文献

Droplet emulsification in microfluidic devices involves the constant formation of fresh interfaces between two immiscible fluids. When the multiphase system contains surfactant, dynamic mass transfer of the surfactant onto the interface results in a dynamic interfacial tension different from the static interfacial tension measured in an equilibrium state. In this work, we have systematically investigated the effects of surfactant concentration and type on the dynamic interfacial tension of two different liquid-liquid two phase systems [N-hexane/water-sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and N-hexane/water-cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)] rapidly producing relatively small droplets in coaxial microfluidic devices. Dynamic interfacial tension experiments using the pendent drop method and a tensiometer were conducted, and a semiempirical equation was developed to put into context the effects of surfactants and the experimental conditions on droplet formation and dynamic interfacial tension in dynamic microchannel flows. The results presented in this work provide a more in-depth understanding of the dynamic effects of surfactants on droplet formation and the precise controllable preparation of monodispersed droplets in microfluidic devices.  相似文献

Mixed micellization behavior of dimeric cationic surfactant ethanediyl-1,2-bis (dimethyldodecylammonium bromide) (12-2-12) with a series of monomeric cationic surfactants dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB), and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) has been studied in aqueous and aqueous polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solutions at 298.15, 308.15, and 318.15 K, respectively, using conductometric method. Various thermodynamic parameters like mixed micelle concentration (Cm), micelle mole fraction (X1), interaction parameter (β), and free energy of mixing (ΔGex) of the mixed systems have been determined and analyzed using Rubingh's regular solution theory. The results indicate that in aqueous solutions the binary mixtures of 12-2-12 with DTAB/TTAB behave nonideally with mutual synergism whereas that with CTAB shows almost ideal behavior at 298.15 K. At 318.15 K, all these binary mixtures exhibit antagonistic behavior. The effect of variation in chain length of alkyltrimethyl ammonium bromide surfactants on the interactions with 12-2-12 have also been evaluated and discussed.  相似文献

The partitioning of a sodium petroleum sulfonate between heptane and brine yields surfactants with different molar absorptivity and λmax values in the two phases, except near the point of minimum interfacial tension, e of the surfactant in the heptane phase increases sharply above the point of minimum interfacial tension between the two phases. The molar partition coefficient, MH/MW, for the surfactant between the heptane and brine phases is unity at surfactant concentrations in the brine phase below the point of minimum interfacial tension and drops sharply at concentrations above it. The critical micelle concentration of the surfactant in the aqueous phase equilibrated with the heptane phase is considerably below the concentration for minimum interfacial tension  相似文献

Measurements were made of the surface tension of the aqueous solutions of p-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) phenoxypoly(ethylene glycols) having 10 oxyethylene groups in the molecule (Triton X-100, TX100) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with Zonyl FSN-100 (FC6EO14, FC1) as well as with Zonyl FSO-100 (FC5EO10, FC2) ternary mixtures. The obtained results were compared to those provided by the Fainerman and Miller equation and to the values of the solution surface tension calculated, based on the contribution of a particular surfactant in the mixture to the reduction of water surface tension. The changes of the aqueous solution ternary surfactants mixture surface tension at the constant concentration of TX100 and CTAB mixture at which the water surface tension was reduced to 60 and 50 mN/m as a function of fluorocarbon surfactant concentration, were considered with regard to the composition of the mixed monolayer at the water-air interface. Next, this composition was applied for the calculation of the concentration of the particular surfactants in the monolayer using the Frumkin equation. On the other hand, the Gibbs surface excess concentration was determined only for the fluorocarbon surfactants. The tendency of the particular surfactants to adsorb at the water-air interface was discussed, based on the Gibbs standard free energy of adsorption which was determined using different methods. This energy was also deduced, based on the surfactant tail surface tension and tail-water interface tension.  相似文献

Measurements of the advancing contact angle (theta) were carried out for aqueous solution of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and p-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) phenoxypoly(ethylene glycol), Triton X-100 (TX100) mixtures on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The obtained results indicate that the wettability of PTFE depends on the concentration and composition of the surfactants mixture. There is a minimum of the dependence between contact angle and composition of the mixtures for PTFE for each concentration at a monomer mole fraction of CTAB, alpha, equal 0.2, which points to the synergism in the wettability of PTFE. In contrast to Zisman, there is no linear dependence between costheta and the surface tension of aqueous solution of CTAB and TX100 mixtures for all studied systems, but a linear dependence exists between the adhesional tension and surface tension for PTFE in the whole concentration range, the slope of which is -1, that suggests that the surface excess of the surfactant concentration at the PTFE-solution interface is the same as that at the solution-air interface for a given bulk concentration. It was also found that the work of adhesion of aqueous solution of surfactants to PTFE surface did not depend on the type of surfactant and its concentration. It means that the interactions across PTFE-solution interface were constant for the systems studied, and they were largely Lifshitz-van de Waals type. On the basis of the surface tension of PTFE and the Young equation and thermodynamic analysis of the adhesion work of aqueous solution of surfactant to the polymer surface it was found that in the case of PTFE the changes of the contact angle as a function of the mixture of nonionic and cationic surfactants concentration resulted only from changes of the polar component of solution surface tension.  相似文献

The total reflection X-ray absorption fine structure (TR-XAFS) technique was applied to adsorbed films at the surface of aqueous solutions of surfactant mixtures composed of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (DTABF4). The obtained XAFS spectra were expressed as linear combinations of two specific spectra corresponding to fully hydrated bromide ions (free-Br) and partially dehydrated bromide ions adsorbed to the hydrophilic groups of surfactant ions (bound-Br) at the surface. The ratio of free- and bound-Br ions was determined as a function of surface tension and surface composition of the surfactants. Taking also the results in our previous studies on the DTAB - dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (HMIMBr) - 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (HMIMBF4) mixed systems into consideration, the relation between counterion distribution and miscibility of counterions at the solution surface was deduced for the surfactant mixtures having common surfactant ions but different counterions.  相似文献

Interaction between 3d-transition metal ions (Mn2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+) and the E(T)(30) dye, 2,6-diphenyl-4-(2,4,6-triphenyl 1-pyridino)phenolate in aqueous medium have been studied by distributing the dye between the aqueous and micellar phase formed by cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB). Values of equilibrium constant K for the dye-metal ion interaction and the partition coefficient of the dye between the micellar and the aqueous phase have been determined. K values show a systematic correlation with ionic potential of metal ions.  相似文献

Complexation of DNA with cationic gemini surfactant in aqueous solution   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Interactions between DNA and the cationic gemini surfactant trimethylene-1,3-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium bromide) (12-3-12) in aqueous solution have been investigated by UV-vis transmittance, zeta potential, and fluorescence emission spectrum. Complexes of DNA and gemini surfactant are observed in which the negative charges of DNA are neutralized by cationic surfactants effectively. The DNA-induced micelle-like structure of the surfactant due to the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions is determined by the fluorescence spectrum of pyrene. It is found that the critical aggregation concentration (CAC) for DNA/12-3-12 complexes depends little on the addition of sodium bromide (NaBr) because of the counterbalance salt effect. However, at high surfactant concentration, NaBr facilitates the formation of larger DNA/surfactant aggregates. Displacement of ethidium bromide (EB) by surfactant evidently illustrates the strong cooperative binding between surfactant and DNA. In contrast to that in the absence of surfactant, the added NaBr at high surfactant concentration influences not only the binding of surfactant with DNA, but also the stability of DNA/EB complex.  相似文献

In the present work, the adsorption behavior at the liquid-air interface and micellization characteristics of mixtures of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and p-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) polyoxyethylene (TritonX-100) in aqueous media containing different concentrations of NaBr were investigated by surface tension and potentiometry measurements. From plots of surface tension (gamma) as a function of solution composition and total surfactant concentration, we determined the critical micelle concentration (CMC), minimum surface tension at the CMC (gamma(CMC)), surface excess (Gamma(max)), and mean molecular surface area (A(min)). On the basis of regular solution theory, the compositions of the adsorbed film (Z) and micelles (X(M)) were estimated, and then the interaction parameters in the micelles (beta(M)) and in the adsorbed film phase (beta(sigma)) were calculated. For all mole fraction ratios, the results showed synergistically enhanced ability to form mixed micelles as well as surface tension reduction. Furthermore beta was calculated by considering nonrandom mixing and head group size effects. It was observed that, for both the planar air/aqueous interface and micellar systems, the nonideality decreased as the amount of electrolyte in the aqueous medium was increased. This was attributed to a decrease of the surface charge density caused by increasing the concentration of bromide ions.  相似文献

The effect of salt concentration on intermicellar interactions and aggregate structures of anionic and cationic-rich mixtures of CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) and SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) were investigated with conductometry, surface tension, zeta potential, cyclic voltammetry measurements and by determining the surfactant NMR self-diffusion coefficients. The critical aggregate concentration (CAC), surface excess (Γ(max)), and mean molecular surface area (A(min)) were determined from plots of the surface tension (γ) as a function of the log of total surfactant concentration. The electrochemical behavior of cationic-anionic (catanionic) mixed surfactant and self-assembled surfactant monomers at Pt wire electrode were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). A variation in the peak current versus the total concentration of surfactant allow us to evaluate the CAC and related parameters from regular solution theory along with the diffusion coefficient of the electroactive species. It was observed that, for both the planar air/aqueous interface and micellar systems, the nonideality decreased as the amount of electrolyte in the aqueous medium was increased. Finally, we investigated the variations of electrostatic, transfer and steric free energy in phase transition between mixed micelle and vesicle in the presence of electrolyte using the presented model by our groups.  相似文献

This work investigated the effect of counter‐ions and interfacial turbulence on oxygen transfer from gas to liquid phase containing ionic surfactant, and experiments were performed in a mechanically stirred reactor with flat gas–liquid interface. Counter‐ions in terms of hydration ability and polarizability influence the interfacial coverage of ionic surfactants (i.e. cetytrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetytrimethylammonium chloride) with the same hydrocarbon chain length, producing hindrance but in different extent on oxygen transfer. The addition of electrolyte (NH4Br) substantially reduced the interfacial tension and surface charge of micelles (zeta potential) in CTAB system, and this salt effect greatly compressed interfacial double layer leading to gas transfer inhibition. The surface charge, aggregation number as well as stability of micelles formed above the critical micelle concentration could also alter interfacial configuration of surfactant layer reflected by gas absorption rate. Liquid turbulence was analyzed to decide the role of surfactant present in water on gas–liquid mass transfer, since Marangoni instability effect playing positive role should be taken into consideration under moderate liquid flow, while in turbulent system, contribution of Marangoni effect became overshadowed and consequently surfactant pose ‘barrier’ effect on gas transfer due to its surface active nature.
