Structurally robust block copolymer templates with feature sizes of approximately 10 nm were prepared from functionalized poly(methyl methacrylate)‐b‐polystyrene block copolymers. By the inclusion of benzocyclobutene crosslinking groups in the polystyrene block, the covalent stabilization of thin films to both thermal treatment and solvent exposure became possible. In addition, the crosslinking of the poly(styrene‐benzocyclobutene) domains at 220 °C, followed by the removal of poly(methyl methacrylate), provided a robust, crosslinked nanostructure with greater processing and fabrication potential. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigate the dewetting of aqueous, evaporating polymer [poly(acrylic acid)] solutions cast on glassy hydrophobic (polystyrene) substrates. As in ordinary dewetting, the evaporating films initially break up through the nucleation of holes that perforate the film, but the rapidly growing holes become unstable and form nonequilibrium patterns resembling fingering patterns that arise when injecting air into a liquid between two closely spaced plates (Hele–Shaw patterns). This is natural because the formation of holes in thin films is similar to air injection into a polymer film where the thermodynamic driving force of dewetting is the analogue of the applied pressure in the flow measurement. The patterns formed in the rapidly dewetting and evaporating polymer films become frozen into a stable glassy state after most of the solvent (water) has evaporated, leaving stationary patterns that can be examined by atomic force microscopy and optical microscopy. Similar patterns have been observed in water films evaporating from mica substrates, block copolymer films, and modest hole fingering has also been found in the dewetting of dry polymer films. From these varied observations, we expect this dewetting‐induced fingering instability to occur generally when the dewetting rate and film viscosity are sufficiently large. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Lamellae forming diblock copolymer domains can be directed to assemble without defects and in registration with chemically nanopatterned substrates. Initially, thin films of the lamellar poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) block copolymer form hexagonally close-packed styrene domains when annealed on chemical nanopatterned striped surfaces. These styrene domains then coalesce to form linear styrene domains that are not fully registered with the underlying chemical surface pattern. Defects coarsen, until defect-free directed assembly is obtained, by breaking linear styrene domains and reforming new structures until registered lamellae have been formed. At all stages in the process, two factors play an important role in the observed degree of registration of the block copolymer domains as a function of annealing time: the interfacial energy between the blocks of the copolymer and the chemically nanopatterned substrate and the commensurability of the bulk repeat period of the block copolymer and the substrate pattern period. Insight into the time-dependent three-dimensional behavior of the block copolymer structures is gained from single chain in mean field simulations. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We demonstrate the use of combined thermal annealing and solvent vapor annealing (SVA) to tune the morphology of thermally responsive block copolymer (BCP) thin films. The BCP, poly(styrene‐btert‐butyl acrylate) (PS‐b‐PtBA), undergoes a chemical deprotection to poly(styrene‐b‐acrylic anhydride) (PS‐b‐PAH) above a temperature threshold, giving rise to a structural and morphological transition. Our experiments systematically examine different thermal annealing and SVA protocols with two solvents (tetrahydrofuran and acetone) and map the resulting morphologies. Assessments of these processing protocols were accelerated using temperature gradients. Our results demonstrate that the final nanoscale morphologies after SVA are determined by the changes in the relative solvent/polymer interactions and surface tensions of the polymer blocks that accompany deprotection. Because of these driving forces, certain processing combinations led to irreversible morphological states, whereas others present opportunities for further manipulation. Accordingly, our study reveals that the morphology of this thermally sensitive BCP can be altered through judicious choice of annealing protocol. The protocols that combine equal numbers of SVA and thermal annealing (TA) steps are not necessarily equivalent, and the order of the SVA relative to TA is a deciding factor in the final morphology. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel block copolymers, poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (P3HT‐b‐PEO) were synthesized via Suzuki coupling reaction of P3HT and PEO homopolymers. The copolymers were characterized by NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimeter, and UV–vis measurements. A series of devices based on the block copolymers with a fullerene derivative were evaluated after thermal or solvent annealing. The device using P3HT‐b‐PEO showed higher efficiency than using P3HT blend after thermal annealing. Phase‐separated structures in the thin films of block copolymer blends were investigated by atomic force microscopy to clarify the relationship between morphologies constructed by annealing and the device performance. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel six‐arm star block copolymer comprising polystyrene (PS) linked to the center and π‐conjugated poly (3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) was successfully synthesized using a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and click reaction. First, star‐shaped PS with six arms was prepared via ATRP of styrene with the discotic six‐functional initiator, 2,3,6,7,10,11‐hexakis(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)triphenylene. Next, the terminal bromides of the star‐shaped PS were substituted with azide groups. Afterward, the six‐arm star block copolymer PS‐b‐P3HT was prepared using the click coupling reaction of azide‐terminated star‐shaped PS with alkynyl‐terminated P3HT. Various techniques including 1H NMR, Fourier‐transform infrared and size‐exclusion chromatography were applied to characterize the chemical structures of the intermediates and the target block copolymers. Their thermal behaviors and optical properties were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and UV–vis spectroscopy. Moreover, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was utilized to observe the morphology of the star block copolymer films. In comparison with two linear diblock copolymer counterparts, AFM results reveal the effect of the star block copolymer architecture on the microphase separation‐induced morphology in thin films. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermotropic POSS‐containing poly(methacrylate) with long alkyl chain tethered polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) in the side chain and the block copolymers (PMMA‐b‐PMAC11POSS) were developed by through living anionic polymerization. The resulting polymers indicated a phase transition temperature at 112 °C from spherocrystal to isotropic phase. The POSS‐containing polymer segments tended to form matrix of microphase‐separated nanostructures in the bulk even in the very low volume fraction, for instance, PMMA cylindrical nanostructure was obtained by PMMA175b‐PMAC11POSS11 (?PMAC11POSS = 0.44). The control of thin film morphology was carried out by not only solvent annealing, but also thermal annealing, resulting in the formation of well‐ordered dot‐ and fingerprint‐type nanostructures. This is the first report in a series of POSS‐containing block polymers that are capable for thermal annealing to generate well‐ordered microphase‐separated nanostructures in thin films. The novel thermotropic POSS‐containing block copolymer offers a promising material for block copolymer lithography. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

Thin films of asymmetric poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) block copolymers are studied by means of in situ grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) during solvent vapor annealing in tetrahydrofuran, a solvent selective for the PS majority block of the copolymer. Upon swelling, PS-b-P4VP block copolymers form hexagonal arrays of spherical P4VP microdomains in a PS matrix in films 7–9 layers thick. Deswelling the films induces a transition from hexagonal to face-centered orthorhombic (fco) symmetry, which is stable only at ∼7 layers of spherical microdomains. Dry films show co-existing hexagonal and orthorhombic symmetries when the solvent is removed slowly, whereas instantaneous solvent removal suppresses the fco structure, resulting in films with only hexagonal structure. The in-plane order of microdomains is significantly deteriorated in dry films independent of the solvent removal rate.Spherical block copolymer microdomains are known to undergo a transition from hexagonal to orthorhombic packing in isothermally annealed thin films when the number of sphere layers is increased from 4 to 5. In this paper, in situ GISAXS experiments reveal that a similar transition occurs during solvent vapor annealing in a selective solvent. Interestingly, the transition from hexagonal to orthorhombic packing of spheres occurs as solvent is removed from a thin block copolymer film. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. We report the synthesis, characterization, and solvent‐induced structure formation in thin films of an amphiphilic rod‐coil conjugated block copolymer, poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide). The diblock copolymers were prepared by a facile click reaction and their characterizations as well as thermal, crystalline, optical properties, and self‐assembly behavior have been investigated in detail. A series of morphologies including two‐phase separated nanostructure, nanofibrils, and their mixed morphology could be obtained depending on the selectivity of solvents to different blocks. Structural analyses demonstrate there is a subtle balance between microphase separation of copolymer and the π‐π stacking of the conjugated P3HT and such balance can be controlled by changing the solvents of different selectivity in solution and the length of P3HT block. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In recent years, the dewetting behavior of block copolymer films has been studied a lot, but that of random copolymer films was rarely studied. In this study, effects of film thickness and solvent vapor annealing duration (0 s–24 h) on the dewetting behavior of the spin-coated poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) random copolymer films were mainly investigated by atomic force microscopy and contact angle method for the first time. The film thicknesses of the SAN films prepared at different concentrations were characterized by X-ray reflectometry to be 6–34 nm. With the annealing of acetone vapor, the SAN films first appear holes and then rupture into droplets which fuse and break periodically. The periodic evolutions of the droplets are due to the preferred affinity of acetone molecules with the AN segments and the change of surface energy. This phenomenon is different from the single evolutions in the spin-coated polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) block copolymer films. This illustrates the interactions between AN segments and the substrate are stronger than those between PMMA segments and the substrate in the spin-coated films.  相似文献

Diblock copolymer membranes having a fluorinated segment and a sulfonic acid segment were prepared by living radical polymerization, solution casting, and crosslinking, followed by heat treatment. Diblock copolymers of 2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene (PFS)/4‐(1‐methylsilacyclobutyl)styrene (SBS) and neopentyl styrenesulfonate (SSPen) (poly(PFS‐co‐SBS)‐b‐polySSPen)s were synthesized by nitoroxy‐mediated living radical polymerization. Self‐standing crosslinked membranes were obtained by casting a THF solution of the block copolymer with Pt catalyst. Heat treatment of the membrane at 230 °C induced decomposition of the neopentyl sulfonate esters to provide block copolymer membranes having a fluorinated segment and a free sulfonic acid segment. It was confirmed that the block copolymer with a high sulfonic acid content exhibited high ion exchange capacity and high proton conductivity as well as high thermal stability. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. RAFT copolymerization of beta‐pinene and maleic anhydride was successfully achieved for the first time, using 1‐phenylethyl dithiobenzoate as chain transfer agent in a mixed solvent of tetrehydrofuran and 1.4‐dioxane (1:9, v/v) at a feed molar ratio of beta‐pinene to maleic anhydride as 3:7, and the alternating copolymer was prepared with predetermined molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution. Furthermore, using former alternating copolymer as a macro‐RAFT agent, block copolymer poly(beta‐pinene‐alt‐maleic anhydride)‐b‐polystyrene was synthesized in a chain extending with styrene. Hydrolysis of this block copolymer under acidic conditions formed a new amphiphilic block copolymers poly(beta‐pinene‐alt‐maleic acid)‐b‐polystyrene whose self‐assembly behaviors in aqueous solution at different pH were investigated through SEM and DLS. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fluorinated polymer particles with grafting sulfonate chains, which showed high dispersion stability in aqueous media, were synthesized by the crosslinking of block copolymer micelles. A crosslinkable block copolymer, poly[(2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene)‐co‐4‐(1‐methylsilacyclobutyl)styrene]‐b‐poly(neopentyl 4‐styrenesulfonate), composed of a statistical copolymer segment of 2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene with 4‐(1‐methylsilacyclobutyl)styrene and a neopentyl 4‐styrenesulfonate segment, was prepared by the nitroxy‐mediated living radical polymerization of a 2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene/4‐(1‐methylsilacyclobutyl)styrene mixture and neopentyl 4‐styrenesulfonate. The block copolymer formed micelles with a poly[(2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene)‐co‐4‐(1‐methylsilacyclobutyl)styrene] core in acetonitrile, which were crosslinked via the ring‐opening reaction of silacyclobutyl groups in the core by a treatment with a platinum catalyst. The deprotection of sulfonate groups in the micelle corona by exposure to trimethylsilyl iodide and a treatment with aqueous HCl, followed by neutralization with aqueous NaOH, provided a polymer particle with polymer chains of sodium 4‐styrenesulfonate grafted on its surface. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly of block copolymer through dispersion RAFT polymerization has been demonstrated to be a valid method to prepare block copolymer nano‐objects. However, volatile solvents are generally involved in this preparation. Herein, the in situ synthesis of block copolymer nano‐objects of poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐polystyrene (PEG‐b‐PS) in the ionic liquid of 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIN][PF6]) through the macro‐RAFT agent mediated dispersion polymerization is investigated. It is found that the dispersion RAFT polymerization of styrene in the ionic liquid of [BMIN][PF6] runs faster than that in the alcoholic solvent, and the dispersion RAFT polymerization in the ionic liquid affords good control over the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the PEG‐b‐PS diblock copolymer. The morphology of the in situ synthesized PEG‐b‐PS diblock copolymer nano‐objects, e.g., nanospheres and vesicles, in the ionic liquid is dependent on the polymerization degree of the solvophobic block and the concentration of the fed monomer, which is somewhat similar to those in alcoholic solvent. It is anticipated that the dispersion RAFT polymerization in ionic liquid broads a new way to prepare block copolymer nano‐objects. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A monomer design having a bulky terminal tricyclodecane (TCD) unit linked via hydrogen bondable urethane to an ethyleneoxy methacrylate unit, and capable of generating three‐dimensional honeycomb patterns upon solvent casting has been investigated. Random copolymers as well as a diblock copolymer Poly(Sty42b‐TCD18) of this monomer with styrene were prepared by free‐radical polymerization route and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) route. Morphology characterization was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Particle size was measured by dynamic light scattering measurements (DLS). Irrespective of the wide differences in molecular weight and polydispersity index values, the random copolymers having TCD content >30 mol % were found to form microporous films upon solvent casting from a THF/water 9:1 solvent combination. The amount of TCD in the copolymer was found to have an influence on the pore size formed. The diblock copolymer formed microspheres ~200 nm in diameter. The thermal properties of all the polymers were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and the copolymers were found to have good thermal stability. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel monomer, ethyl 4‐[4‐(11‐methacryloyloxyundecyloxy)phenyl azobenzoyl‐oxyl] benzoate, containing a photoisomerizable N?N group was synthesized. The monomer was further diblock copolymerized with methyl methacrylate. Amphiphilic diblock copolymer poly(methyl methacrylate‐block‐ethyl 4‐[4‐(11‐methacryloyloxyundecyloxy)phenyl azobenzoyl‐oxyl] benzoate ( PMMA ‐ b ‐ PAzoMA ) was synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization. The reverse micelles with spherical construction were obtained with 2 wt % of the diblock copolymer in a THF/H2O mixture of 1:2. Under alternating UV and visible light illumination, reversible changes in micellar structure between sphere and rod‐like particles took place as a result of the reversible E‐Z photoisomerization of azobenzene segments in PMMA ‐ b ‐ PAzoMA . Microphase separation of the amphiphilic diblock copolymer in thin films was achieved through thermal and solvent aligning methods. The microphases of the annealed thin films were investigated using atom force microscopy topology and scanning electron microscopy analyses. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phase behaviors induced by solvent annealing in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(styrene‐ran‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) blend ultrathin films have been investigated by atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence small‐angle X‐ray scattering. Our results indicate that both the phase separation within the blend and the dewetting of the film induced by composition fluctuation take place upon the selective solvent annealing, producing complex structures containing upper droplets (of one phase) and mimic‐films (of the other rich‐phase). The use of acetic acid (the selective solvent for PMMA) generates PMMA mimic‐film and SAN droplets, while the introduction of DMF (exhibiting better solubility for SAN) vapor results in the formation of SAN mimic‐film and PMMA droplets. Essentially, the interaction at polymer/substrate interface, resultant wettability of selected component, solubility of PMMA and SAN in adopted solvent dominate not only the phase separation and the dewetting of the whole film but also the synergism of them. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A solvent‐free method for the hydrosilylation of pendant double bonds in block copolymers is reported in this article. An anionically prepared block copolymer, poly(styrene‐b‐1,2‐butadiene), was heated with 1H,1H,2H,2H‐perfluorooctyldimethylhydrosilane in the presence of a nonacidic platinum catalyst for 24–26 h to obtain a quantitatively hydrosilylated block copolymer. Gel permeation chromatography, IR, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the block copolymers obtained. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The structure–property relationships of isotactic polypropylene (iPP)/styrenic block copolymer blends filled with talc were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and tensile‐ and impact strength measurements. The composites were analyzed as a function of the poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐propylene) diblock copolymer (SEP) and the poly(styrene‐b‐butadiene‐b‐styrene) triblock copolymer (SBS) content in the range from 0 to 20 vol % as elastomeric components and with 12 vol % of aminosilane surface‐treated talc as a filler. Talc crystals incorporated in the iPP matrix accommodated mostly plane‐parallel to the surface of the samples and strongly affected the crystallization process of the iPP matrix. The SBS block copolymer disoriented plane‐parallel talc crystals more significantly than the SEP block copolymer. The mechanical properties depended on the final phase morphology of the investigated iPP blends and composites and supermolecular structure of the iPP matrix because of the interactivity between their components. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An approach for the preparation of block copolymer vesicles through ultrasonic treatment of polystyrene‐block‐poly(2‐vinyl pyridine) (PS‐b‐P2VP) micelles under alkaline conditions is reported. PS‐b‐P2VP block copolymers in toluene, a selective solvent for PS, form spherical micelles. If a small amount of NaOH solution is added to the micelles solution during ultrasonic treatment, organic‐inorganic Janus‐like particles composed of the PS‐b‐P2VP block copolymers and NaOH are generated. After removal of NaOH, block copolymer vesicles are obtained. A possible mechanism for the morphological transition from spherical micelles to vesicles or Janus‐like particles is discussed. If the block copolymer micelles contain inorganic precursors, such as FeCl3, hybrid vesicles are formed, which may be useful as biological and chemical sensors or nanostructured templates. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
