2,6‐bis(4‐Distyrylpyridine) ( 1 ) was synthesized by the condensation of 2,6‐dimethylpyridine with 4‐bromobenzaldehyde. Two new series of soluble random or alternating polyfluorenes ( PF‐Py ) and poly‐p‐phenylenes ( PP‐Py ) with various compositions were prepared by Suzuki coupling utilizing 1 as a comonomer. These polymers showed optical band gaps of 3.00–3.07 eV and photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields in solution of 0.37–0.91 for PF‐Py and 0.29–0.38 for PP‐Py . Polymers PF‐Py emitted blue light with PL maximum at 410–424 nm in solution and 406–428 nm in thin films that was red shifted with increasing distyrylpyridine content. Polymers PP‐Py behaved as blue emitters both in solution and in solid state, with PL maximum at 416–436 nm. The optical properties of these polymers could be tuned by the reversible protonation–deprotonation process of the pyridine ring. The emitted color of the polymers in solution and thin film could be changed continuously between blue and green (PL maximum up to about 520 nm) by exposing the polymers to the acid or base environment. Thin films of PF‐Py displayed excellent color stability with a small red shift of 10 nm but without additional emission band in the long wave region of the spectrum, even after being annealed at high temperature for a long time. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The radical polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) in toluene at low temperatures was investigated in the presence of triisopropyl phosphate (TiPP). The addition of TiPP induced a syndiotactic specificity that was enhanced by the polymerization temperature being lowered, whereas atactic polymers were obtained in the absence of TiPP, regardless of the temperature. Syndiotactic‐rich poly(NIPAAm) with a racemo dyad content of 65% was obtained at ?60 °C with a fourfold amount of TiPP, but almost atactic poly(NIPAAm)s were obtained by the temperature being lowered to ?80 °C. This result contrasted with the result in the presence of primary alkyl phosphates, such as tri‐n‐propyl phosphate: the stereospecificity varied from syndiotactic to isotactic as the polymerization temperature was lowered. NMR analysis at ?80 °C revealed that TiPP predominantly formed a 1:1 complex with NIPAAm, although primary alkyl phosphates preferentially formed a 1:2 complex with NIPAAm. Thus, it was concluded that a slight increase in the bulkiness of the added phosphates influenced the stoichiometry of the NIPAAm–phosphate complex at lower temperatures, and consequently a drastic change in the effect on the stereospecificity of NIPAAm polymerization was observed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article discusses a facile and inexpensive reaction process for preparing polypropylene‐based graft copolymers containing an isotactic polypropylene (i‐PP) main chain and several functional polymer side chains. The chemistry involves an i‐PP polymer precursor containing several pendant vinylbenzene groups, which is prepared through the Ziegler–Natta copolymerization of propylene and 1,4‐divinylbenzene mediated by an isospecific MgCl2‐supported TiCl4 catalyst. The selective monoenchainment of 1,4‐divinylbenzene comonomers results in pendant vinylbenzene groups quantitatively transformed into benzyl halides by hydrochlorination. In the presence of CuCl/pentamethyldiethylenetriamine, the in situ formed, multifunctional, polymeric atom transfer radical polymerization initiators carry out graft‐from polymerization through controlled radical polymerization. Some i‐PP‐based graft copolymers, including poly(propylene‐g‐methyl methacrylate) and poly(propylene‐g‐styrene), have been prepared with controlled compositions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new method to prepare the polypropylene (PP) macroinitiator for controlled radical polymerization was described. Bromination of terminally-unsaturated PP was carried out by using N-bromosuccinimide and 2,2′-azobis(isobutyronitrile) to give a brominated PP (PP-Br), that has allylic bromide moieties at or near the chain ends. Thus, the obtained PP-Br was successfully used as a macroinitiator for radical polymerization of styrene, methyl methacrylate, and n-butyl acrylate using a copper catalyst system. From 1H NMR analysis, it was confirmed that the chain extension polymerization was certainly initiated from allylic bromide moieties with high efficiency, leading to the PP-based block copolymers linking the polar segment. From differential scanning calorimetry, it was observed that peak melting temperature of block copolymers was higher than that of PP-Br and the obtained PP-PS block copolymers with different compositions of each segment demonstrated the unique morphological features due to the microphase separation between both segments. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Several chelating monomers with methacrylate and maleimide residues as polymerizable groups and diketone and aspartic acid residues as metal‐bonding groups were synthesized. A long‐chain aliphatic spacer was introduced to increase the solubility of the monomers in the polymer melt and to enhance the compatibility of grafted side chains and homopolymers with polypropylene (PP). PP was functionalized by melt free‐radical grafting, and some properties of the modified polymer were investigated. The grafting of a chelating methacrylic ester by injection molding afforded grafting yields of 30–50%. A comparison with products obtained by the grafting of commercially available acetoacetoxy methyl methacrylate showed the beneficial effect of the aliphatic spacer with respect to the grafting yield as well as the tensile strength and flexural modulus. The grafting of an aspartic acid based maleimide in an extruder afforded grafting yields of 80–95% and a significant increase in the surface wettability, as shown by contact‐angle measurements. A comparative study using samples obtained by the grafting of maleimidobenzoic acid indicated that the homogeneity‐increasing effect of the spacer was neutralized by the detrimental effect of the dicarboxylic chelating group. Nevertheless, the results showed that the maleimides were well suited for grafting by reactive extrusion because of their low susceptibility to homopolymerization under melt‐processing conditions. Preliminary metalization experiments showed the feasibility of plating without the use of corrosive etchants. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of 13C‐enriched maleic anhydride grafted isotactic polypropylene samples were prepared in solution at 170 °C by changes in the initial maleic anhydride content. The NMR spectra of the samples showed that the signals of the maleic anhydride attached to the tertiary carbons of the isotactic polypropylene chains increased considerably with increasing maleic anhydride content, whereas the signals of the maleic anhydride on the radical chain ends (with a single bond) arising from β scission did not. On the other hand, the signals of the maleic anhydride on the radical chain ends with double bonds increased markedly with increasing maleic anhydride content, and this suggested that β scission could occur extensively after maleic anhydride was attached to the tertiary carbons. As a result, the molecular weight of the grafted polypropylene decreased significantly with increasing maleic anhydride content in this study. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we report an efficient method for the synthesis of thymine‐functionalized polystyrene microspheres. First, poly(styrene‐co‐4‐chloromethylstyrene) copolymers slightly crosslinked with divinylbenzene were synthesized in batch free‐radical emulsion copolymerization. Microspheres with a particle size of ~40–70 nm were obtained with greater than 99% conversion. The chloromethylstyrene (CMS) groups were then converted into thymylmethylstyrene (TMS) in a two‐phase system with greater than 80% efficiency, and up to a 45 mol % thymine loading was achieved. The functionalized microspheres were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The analyses revealed partial hydrolysis of the CMS functionalities, yielding hydroxymethyl functional groups in addition to the thymine functionalities. These copolymers have potential applications in biotechnology. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 5545–5553, 2005  相似文献

The synthesis of a three‐armed polymer with an isocyanurate–thiourethane core structure is described. Monofunctional reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent 2 and trifunctional RAFT agent 5 were prepared from mercapto‐thiourethane and tris(mercapto‐thiourethane), which were obtained from the aminolysis of mono‐ and trifunctional five‐membered cyclic dithiocarbonates, respectively. The radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of 2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) and RAFT agent 2 in bulk at 60 °C proceeded in a controlled fashion to afford the corresponding polystyrene with desired molecular weights (number‐average molecular weight = 3000–10,100) and narrow molecular weight distributions (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.13). On the basis of the successful results with the monofunctional RAFT agents, three‐armed polystyrene with thiourethane–isocyanurate as the core structure could be obtained with trifunctional RAFT agent 5 in a similar manner. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A bromine capped star‐shaped poly(methyl methacrylate) (S‐PMMA‐Br) was synthesized with CuBr/sparteine/PT‐Br as a catalyst and initiator to polymerize methyl methacrylate (MMA) according to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Then, with S‐PMMA‐Br as a macroinitiator, a series of new liquid crystal rod–coil star block copolymers with different molecular weights and low polydispersity were obtained by this method. The block architecture {coil‐conformation of the MMA segment and rigid‐rod conformation of 2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl] styrene segment} of the four‐armed rod–coil star block copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR. The liquid‐crystalline behavior of these copolymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. We found that the liquid‐crystalline behavior depends on the molecular weight of the rigid segment; only the four‐armed rod–coil star block copolymers with each arm's Mn,GPC of the rigid block beyond 0.91 × 104 g/mol could form liquid‐crystalline phases above the glass‐transition temperature of the rigid block. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent, dendritic polyester with 16 dithiobenzoate terminal groups, was prepared and used in the RAFT polymerization of styrene (St) to produce star polystyrene (PSt) with a dendrimer core. It was found that this polymerization was of living characters, the molecular weight of the dendrimer‐star polymers could be controlled and the polydispersities were narrow. The dendrimer‐star block copolymers of St and methyl acrylate (MA) were also prepared by the successive RAFT polymerization using the dendrimer‐star PSt as macro chain transfer agent. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Charpy drop‐weight‐impact and essential work of fracture (EWF) characteristics of maleic anhydride (MA)‐compatibilized styrene–ethylene butylene–styrene (SEBS)/polypropylene (PP) blends and their composites reinforced with short glass fibers (SGFs) were investigated. MA was grafted to either SEBS copolymer (SEBS‐g‐MA) or PP (PP‐g‐MA). The mPP blend was prepared by the compounding of 95% PP and 5% PP‐g‐MA. Drop‐weight‐impact results revealed that the mPP specimen had an extremely low impact strength. The incorporation of SEBS or SEBS‐g‐MA elastomers into mPP improved its impact strength dramatically. Similarly, the addition of SEBS was beneficial for enhancing the impact strength of the SGF/SEBS/mPP and SGF/SEBS‐g‐MA/mPP hybrids. A scanning electron microscopy examination of the fractured surfaces of impact specimens revealed that the glass‐fiber surfaces of the SGF/SEBS/mPP and SGF/SEBS‐g‐MA/mPP hybrids were sheathed completely with deformed matrix material. This was due to strong interfacial bonding between the phase components of the hybrids associated with the MA addition. Impact EWF tests were carried out on single‐edge‐notched‐bending specimens at 3 m s?1. The results showed that pure PP, mPP, and the composites only exhibited specific essential work. The nonessential work was absent in these specimens under a high‐impact‐rate loading condition. The addition of SEBS or SEBS‐g‐MA elastomer to mPP increased both the specific essential and nonessential work of fracture. This implied that elastomer particles contributed to the dissipation of energy at the fracture surface and in the outer plastic zone at a high impact speed of 3 m s?1. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of new reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents with cyanobenzyl R groups were synthesized. In comparison with other dithioester RAFT agents, these new RAFT agents were odorless or low‐odor, and this made them much easier to handle. The kinetics of methyl methacrylate radical polymerizations mediated by these RAFT agents were investigated. The polymerizations proceeded in a controlled way, the first‐order kinetics evolved in a linear fashion with time, the molecular weights increased linearly with the conversions, and the polydispersities were very narrow (~1.1). A poly[(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐polystyrene] block copolymer was prepared (number‐average molecular weight = 42,600, polydispersity index = 1.21) from a poly(methyl methacrylate) macro‐RAFT agent. These new RAFT agents also showed excellent control over the radical polymerization of styrenics and acrylates. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of polymers tethered with bis‐MPA dendrons was synthesized by a combination of divergent growth and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Macromonomers of first and second generation were synthesized utilizing the acetonide protected anhydride of bis‐MPA as the generic esterfication agent. The macromonomers were polymerized in a controlled fashion by ATRP utilizing Cu(I)/Cu(II) and N‐propyl‐2‐pyridylmethanamine as the halogen/ligand system. The end‐groups of these polymers were further tailored to achieve hydroxyl, acetate, and aliphatic hexadecyl functionality. With this approach all polymers will emanate from the same backbone, enabling for an evaluation of both the generation and end‐group dependent properties. Furthermore, a dendronized tri‐block copolymer was synthesized. All materials were analyzed by 1H and 13C NMR, as well as size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC). The SEC analysis revealed that the molecular weights of the divergently grown dendronized polymers increased with increasing generation while the polydispersity (PDI) was kept low. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The background to the formation of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) polymer group is discussed. In particular, the challenges of working with high‐conversion polymerization, as found in commercial systems, and the need to explain variations in polymer properties led to important advances in the theory of radical polymerization and control over both the initiation and termination steps. Studies on the fate of the macromonomer, formed in termination by disproportionation, led to an early form of addition/fragmentation now known as reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer, whereas detailed studies on initiation pathways using nitroxide trapping led to nitroxide‐mediated living radical polymerization. These studies contributed to the renaissance in free‐radical polymerization studies. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 5748–5764, 2005  相似文献

The synthesis of alkyl 2‐(carboethoxyhydroxymethyl)acrylates via the Bayllis‐Hillmann reaction pathway is described. These compounds are found to be poor monomers when involved in free radical polymerizations but present an extremely high reactivity upon Michael addition with primary amines leading to a simple, mild and efficient route to the preparation of new multifunctional heterocycles and polymers with potential applications in biodegradable coatings. Real‐time NMR spectroscopy permitted monitoring the extent of the reaction sequence and determining the conversion profile of reactants and Michael adduct intermediate. Poly(ester amide)s derived from diamine and hexane bis‐2‐(carboethoxyhydroxymethyl)acrylate were synthesized at room temperature by means of a very efficient Michael addition/cyclization polymerization. These polymers display excellent adhesion to metal, glass, and paper substrates and interesting hydrolytic susceptibility. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The phase structure and clay dispersion in polyamide‐6(PA6)/polypropylene(PP)/organoclay (70/30/4) systems with and without an additional 5 parts of maleated polypropylene (MAH‐g‐PP) as a compatibilizer were studied with atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM scans were taken from the polished surface of specimens that were chemically and physically etched with formic acid and argon ion bombardment, respectively. The latter technique proved to be very sensitive to the blend morphology, as PP was far more resistant to ion bombardment than PA6. In the absence of the MAH‐g‐PP compatibilizer, the organoclay is located in the PA6 phase; this finding is in line with transmission electron microscopic results. Further, the PP is coarsely dispersed in PA6 and the adhesion between PA6 and PP is poor. The addition of MAH‐g‐PP resulted in a markedly finer PP dispersion and good interfacial bonding between PA6 and PP. In this blend, the organoclay was likely dispersed in the PA6‐grafted PP phase. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43:1198–1204, 2005  相似文献

Two RAFT agents, suitable for inducing living radical polymerization in water, have been synthesized. Both RAFT agents were shown to be effective over the temperature range 25–70 °C. One RAFT agent was functionalized with a pyridyl disulfide group. RAFT efficacy was demonstrated for the polymerizations of N‐isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAM) and poly(ethylene oxide)‐acrylate (PEG‐A) in both water and acetonitrile. The kinetic data indicates that the pyridyl disulfide functionality is largely benign in free radical polymerizations, remaining intact for subsequent reaction with thiol groups. This result was confirmed by studying conventional radical polymerizations in the presence of hydroxyethyl pyridyl disulfide. The utility of the pyridyl disulfide functionality at the terminus of the polymers was demonstrated by synthesizing polymer‐BSA conjugates. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The precipitation polymerization of acrylic acid in supercritical carbon dioxide was studied in a continuous stirred tank reactor with 2,2′‐azobis(2,4‐dimethylvaleronitrile) as the free‐radical initiator. The reactor temperature was between 50 and 90 °C, the pressure was 207 bar, and the average residence time was between 12 and 40 min. The product polymer was a white, dry, fine powder that dissolved in water. A wide range of polymer molecular weights (5–200 kg/mol) was obtained. The effects of the operating variables on the polymerization rate and on the polymer molecular weight were evaluated. The observed kinetics suggested that polymerization took place in both the supercritical fluid and the precipitated polymer particles. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The experimental data reveal that the addition of ethylene–acrylic acid copolymer (EAA) into carbon black (CB)/polypropylene (PP) composites can improve the electrical conductivity of CB/PP composites by two to six orders of magnitude at a comparatively low CB content (φ), and when φ = 2.5 vol %, 60/40 of PP/EAA is an optimum for electrical conductivity improvement. The dynamic rheological data show that with increasing φ there are apparent rheological percolations for CB/PP composites. A modified Kerner–Nielson equation can be used to describe the correlation between electrical percolation and dynamic viscoelastic percolation. The addition of EAA into CB/PP composites leads to apparent changes in dynamic rheological behaviors. When φ = 2.5 vol %, a rheological percolation appears in CB/PP/EAA (CPE) composites with increasing EAA content. The similar rheological behaviors correspond to the similar morphological structures for CPE composites with φ = 5.0 vol %. The appearance of bumps in the van‐Gurp–Palmen plots corresponds to the formation of network structure in CB/PP and CPE composites, and the more perfect the networks, the higher the amplitude of the bumps. All data indicate that the van‐Gurp–Palmen plot is sensitive to the formation of filler particle networks or cocontinuous phase which spans the whole composite. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The (controlled) free‐radical copolymerization of maleic anhydride and styrene or derivatives thereof is often thought to provide nearly perfect alternating copolymers. Here, the RAFT copolymerization of electron‐rich styrene derivatives with maleic anhydride is reported. This copolymerization shows distinct penultimate effects, resulting in polymers with increased incorporation of styrene monomers, that is, where a tendency toward periodic (S‐S‐MA) copolymers exists. This work could be a first step towards periodic copolymers based on maleic anhydride and styrene derivatives. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym.
