Crystallization studies at quiescent and shear states in isotactic polypropylene (iPP) containing nanostructured polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules were performed with in situ small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC was used to characterize the quiescent crystallization behavior. It was observed that the addition of POSS molecules increased the crystallization rate of iPP under both isothermal and nonisothermal conditions, which suggests that POSS crystals act as nucleating agents. Furthermore, the crystallization rate was significantly reduced at a POSS concentration of 30 wt %, which suggests a retarded growth mechanism due to the molecular dispersion of POSS in the matrix. In situ SAXS was used to study the behavior of shear‐induced crystallization at temperatures of 140, 145, and 150 °C in samples with POSS concentrations of 10, 20, and 30 wt %. The SAXS patterns showed scattering maxima along the shear direction, which corresponded to a lamellar structure developed perpendicularly to the flow direction. The crystallization half‐time was calculated from the total scattered intensity of the SAXS image. The oriented fraction, defined as the fraction of scattered intensity from the oriented component to the total scattered intensity, was also calculated. The addition of POSS significantly increased the crystallization rate during shear compared with the rate for the neat polymer without POSS. We postulate that although POSS crystals have a limited role in shear‐induced crystallization, molecularly dispersed POSS molecules behave as weak crosslinkers in polymer melts and increase the relaxation time of iPP chains after shear. Therefore, the overall orientation of the polymer chains is improved and a faster crystallization rate is obtained with the addition of POSS. Moreover, higher POSS concentrations resulted in faster crystallization rates during shear. The addition of POSS decreased the average long‐period value of crystallized iPP after shear, which indicates that iPP nuclei are probably initiated in large numbers near molecularly dispersed POSS molecules. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Combined in situ rheo-SAXS (small-angle X-ray scattering) and -WAXD (wide-angle X-ray diffraction) studies using couette flow geometry were carried out to probe thermal stabilty of shear-induced oriented precursor structure in isotactic polypropylene (iPP) at around its normal melting point (162 °C). Although SAXS results corroborated the emerging consensus about the formation of “long-living” metastable mesomorphic precursor structures in sheared iPP melts, these are the first quantitative measures of the limiting temperature at which no oriented structures survive. At the applied shear, rate = 60 s−1 and duration ts = 5 s, the oriented iPP structures survived a temperature of 185 °C for 1 h after shear, while no stable structures were detected at and above 195 °C. Following Keller's concepts of chain orientation in flow, it is proposed that the chains with highly oriented high molecular weight fraction are primarily responsible for their stability at high temperatures. Furthermore, the effects of flow condition, specifically the shear temperature, on the distributions of oriented and unoriented crystals were determined from rheo-WAXD results. As expected, at a constant flow intensity (i.e., rate = 30 s−1 and duration, ts = 5 s), the oriented crystal fraction decreased with the increase in temperature above 155 °C, below which the oriented fraction decreased with the decrease in temperature. As a result, a crystallinty “phase” diagram, i.e., temperature versus crystal fraction ratio, exhibited a peculiar “hourglass” shape, similar to that found in many two-phase polymer–polymer blends. This can be explained by the competition between the oriented and unoriented crystals in the available crystallizable species. Below the shear temperature (155 °C), the unoriented crystals crystallized so rapidly that they overwhelmed the crystallization of the oriented crystals, thus depleting a major portion of the crystallizable species and increasing their contribution in the final total crystalline phase. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, epitaxial structures have been successfully obtained in the isotactic polypropylene (iPP)/polyethylene (PE) blends by an accessible injection molding methods. By studying a series of iPP/PE blends, the evolution of the epitaxial growth of PE lamellae on the oriented iPP lamellae has been detailedly discussed via wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, small‐angle X‐ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Unexpectedly, the exactly epitaxial angles between peculiarly arranged PE lamellae and oriented PP lamellae are all larger than the classical epitaxy theory value of 50°, and it even increases gradually with increasing PP content. It is inferred that the special crystallization of PE is the consequence of joint construction of the oriented PP crystals and the continuous intense shear field provided by pressure vibration injection molding. The epitaxial structures play a positive role in the interfacial connection between two components; thus, the mechanical properties of the blends are improved. This work provides an insight understanding on the formation mechanism of the epitaxy crystallization under shear field. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Summary: Shear‐induced crystallization in a blend of isotactic poly(propylene) and poly(ethylene‐co‐octene) (iPP/PEOc) has been investigated by means of in‐situ optical microscopy and a shear hot stage under various thermal and shear histories. Cylindrites are observed after shear in the phase‐separated iPP/PEOc blends for the first time. The nuclei (shish) come from the orientation of the entangled network chains, and the relationship between the shear rate and the network relaxation time of the oriented iPP chains is a very important factor that dominates the formation of the cylindrites after liquid‐liquid phase separation. The cylindrites can grow through phase‐separated domains with proper shear rate and shear time. In addition, the number of spherulites increases with shear rate, which is consistent with the notion of fluctuation‐induced nucleation/crystallization.

Phase‐contrast optical micrograph of the iPP/PEOc = 50/50 (wt.‐%) sample sheared during cooling with shear rate of 10 s−1 and isothermally crystallized at 140 °C for 142 s after isothermal annealing at 170 °C for 420 min. The shear time is 180 s.  相似文献

The in situ microfibrillar blend of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was fabricated through a slit die extrusion, hot stretch, and quenching process. The morphological observation indicates that while the unstretched blend appears to be a common incompatible morphology, the hot stretched blends present PET in situ fibers whose characteristics, such as diameter and aspect ratio, are dependent on the hot stretching ratio (HSR). When the HSR is low, the elongated dispersed phase particles are not uniform at all. As the HSR is increased to 16.1, well‐defined PET microfibers were generated in situ, whose diameter is rather uniform and is around 0.6 ~ 0.9 μm. The presence of the PET phase shows significant nucleation ability for crystallization of iPP. Higher HSR corresponds to faster crystallization of the iPP matrix, while as HSR is high up to a certain level, its variation has little influence on the onset and maximum crystallization temperatures of the iPP matrix during cooling from melt. Optical microscopy observation reveals that transcrystalline layers form in the microfibrillar blend, in which the PET microfibers play as the center row nuclei. In the as‐stretched microfibrillar blends, small‐angle X‐ray scattering measurements show that matrix iPP lamellar crystals have the same orientation as PET lamella. The long period of lamellar crystals of iPP is not affected by the presence of PET micofibers. Wide‐angle X‐ray scattering reveals that the β phase of iPP is obtained in the as‐stretched blends, whose concentration increases with the increase of the HSR. This suggests that finer PET microfibers can promote the occurrence of the β phase. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 4095–4106, 2004  相似文献

The compatibility between isotactic polypropylene(i PP) and ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM) in the blends was studied. SAXS analysis indicates that i PP and EPDM phases in the binary blend are incompatible. Isothermal crystallization behaviors of i PP in phase-separated i PP/EPDM were studied by in situ POM equipped with a Linkam shear hot stage. It was found that typical spherulites of i PP were formed both in neat i PP and in i PP/EPDM blends. The radial growth rate(d R/dt) of spherulites of i PP in the blend was not influenced by EPDM phases. Further investigations on isothermal crystallization of i PP in i PP/EPDM after shear with a fixed shear time showed that the crystallization rate of i PP in the blends increased with increasing shear rates, whereas, the crystallization rate was much lower than that of neat i PP. WAXD results showed that ?-crystal i PP was formed in neat i PP as well as in i PP/EPDM blends after shearing and the percentage of ?-crystal bore a relationship to the applied shear rate. The presence of EPDM resulted in lower percentage of ?-crystal in the blends than that in neat i PP under the same constant shear conditions. SAXS experiments revealed that shear flow could induce formation of oriented lamellae in i PP and i PP in the blends, and the presence of EPDM led to a reduced fraction of oriented lamellae.  相似文献

This study describes the morphology and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in situ micro‐fiber‐reinforced blends (MRB) obtained via slit‐extrusion, hot‐stretching quenching. For comparison purposes, neat PP and PET/PP common blends are also included. Morphological observation indicated that the well‐defined microfibers are in situ generated by the slit‐extrusion, hot‐stretching quenching process. Neat iPP and PET/iPP common blends showed the normal spherulite morphology, whereas the PET/iPP microfibrillar blend had typical transcrystallites at 1 wt % PET concentration. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of three samples were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Applying the theories proposed by Jeziorny, Ozawa, and Liu to analyze the crystallization kinetics of neat PP and PET/PP common and microfibrillar blends, agreement was found between our experimental results and Liu's prediction. The increases of crystallization temperature and crystallization rate during the nonisothermal crystallization process indicated that PET in situ microfibers have significant nucleation ability for the crystallization of a PP matrix phase. The crystallization peaks in the DSC curves of the three materials examined widened and shifted to lower temperature when the cooling rate was increased. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sodium benzoate (SB), a conventional nucleating agent of α‐phase isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was discovered to induce the creation of β‐phase iPP under certain crystalline conditions. Polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) were carried out to verify the versatile nucleating activity of SB and investigate the influences of SB's content, isothermal crystallization temperature, and crystallization time on the formation of β‐phase iPP. The current experimental results indicated that, under isothermal crystallization conditions, SB showed peculiar nucleating characteristics on inducing iPP crystallization which were different from those of the commercial β form nucleating agent (TMB‐5). The content of β crystal form of iPP nucleated with SB (PP/SB) increased initially with the increase of crystallization temperature, nucleating agent (SB) percentage or crystallization time, reached a maximum value, and then decreased as the crystallization temperature, nucleating agent percentage or crystallization time further increased. While the content of β crystal form of iPP nucleated with TMB‐5 (PP/TMB‐5) showed a completely different changing pattern with the crystallization conditions. The obvious difference of the two kinds of nucleating agents on inducing iPP crystallization can be explained by the versatile nucleating ability of SB. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Compounds of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and β‐nucleating agent were used to investigate the relationship between the development of β phase and molecular weight in iPP under quiescent crystallization conditions by using wide angle X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. In all cases, the dependency of the formation of β phase in iPP on molecular weight of iPP at a defined crystallization temperature range was found. The iPP with high molecular weight possessed a wide range of crystallization temperature in inducing rich β phase. However, poor or even no β phase was obtained for the samples with low molecular weight in the same range. In addition, an upper critical crystallization temperature of producing dominant β phase was found at 125 °C. Beyond this temperature, a phenomenon of prevailing α phase became obvious. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2014 , 52, 1301–1308  相似文献

The structure, morphology, and isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization of isotactic polypropylene/low‐molecular‐mass hydrocarbon resin blends (iPP/HR) (up to 20% in weight of HR) have been studied, using optical and electron microscopy, wide‐ and small‐angle X‐ray and differential scanning calorimetry. New structures and morphologies can be activated, using appropriate preparation and crystallization conditions and blend composition. For every composition and crystallization condition, iPP crystallizes in α‐form, with a spherulitic morphology. The size of iPP spherulites increases with resin content, whereas the long period decreases. In the range of crystallization temperatures investigated, HR modifies the birefringence of iPP spherulites, favoring the formation of radial lamellae and changing the ratio between tangential and radial lamellae. Spherulitic radial growth rates, overall crystallization rates, and melting temperatures are strongly affected by resin, monotonically decreasing with resin content. This confirms miscibility in the melt between the two components of the blends. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 3368–3379, 2004  相似文献

The epitaxial crystallization behavior of high-density polyethylene on the boundary of highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates has been investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained from AFM and TEM indicate that the epitaxial nucleation of HDPE on the highly oriented iPP substrates occurs earlier than that in the pure HDPE phase, i.e., homogeneous nucleation. Therefore the epitaxially grown HDPE lamellae can grow across the boundary of the iPP substrate into the HDPE spherulitic phase with the epitaxial orientation relationship remaining.  相似文献

The effect of compatibility on phase morphology and orientation of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) blends under shear stress was investigated via dynamic packing injection molding (DPIM). The compatibility of iPP blended with other polymers, namely, atactic polypropylene (aPP), octane-ethylene copolymer (POE), ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA), have first been studied using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). These blends were subjected to DPIM, which relies on the application of shear stress fields to the melt/solid interfaces during the packing stage by means of hydraulically actuated pistons. The phase morphology, orientation and mechanical properties of the injection-molded samples were characterized by SEM, 2D WAXS and Instron. For incompatible iPP/EVA blends, a much elongated and deformed EVA particles and a higher degree of iPP chain orientation were observed under the effect of shear. However, for compatible iPP/aPP blends, a less deformed and elongated aPP particles and less oriented iPP chains were deduced. It can be concluded that the compatibility between the components decreases the deformation and orientation in the polymer blends. This is most likely due to the hindering effect, resulting from the molecular entanglement and interaction in the compatible system.

Although under normal conditions only the crystallization behavior of PE on oriented iPP substrates can be studied due to the higher melting point of iPP, the faster crystallization rate of a molten, oriented HDPE film compared to a nonoriented iPP layer was used to study the crystallization of iPP on the oriented HDPE film by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED). Besides the known epitaxial relationship of HDPE/iPP with their chains 50° apart, two new orientation relationships with (a) chains of both polymers parallel and (hk0)iPP in contact with the HDPE substrate, and (b) the a‐axis of iPP crystals parallel to the chain direction of HDPE but (001)iPP in contact with the HDPE substrate were observed. Both orientations are assumed as graphoepitaxy. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 37: 1893–1898, 1999  相似文献

The influence of low contents of a liquid crystalline polymer on the crystallization and melting behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was investigated using electron and optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. In pure iPP, the α modification was found, whereas for iPP/Vectra blends at Vectra concentration <5%, both α and β forms were observed. The amount of β phase varied from 0.23 to 0.16. Optical microscopy showed that Vectra was able to nucleate both α and β forms. Non-isothermal crystallization produces a material with a strong tendency for recrystallization of the α and β forms (αα′ and ββ′ recrystallization) leading to double endotherms for both crystalline forms in DSC thermograms. Melting thermograms after isothermal crystallization at low temperatures showed a similar behavior. At values of Tc > 119 °C for the α form and Tc > 125 °C for the β form, only one melting endotherm was observed because enough perfect crystals, not susceptible to recrystallization, were obtained. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization and phase morphology of the injection‐molded isotactic polypropylene (iPP)/syndiotactic polypylenen (sPP) blends were studied, focusing on the difference between the skin layer and core layer. The distribution of crystallinity of PPs in the blends calculated based upon the DSC results shows an adverse situation when compared with that in the neat polymer samples. For 50/50 wt % iPP/sPP blend, the SEM results indicated that a dispersed structure in the skin layer and a cocontinuous structure in the core layer were observed. A migration phenomenon that the sPP component with lower crystallization temperature and viscosity move to the core layer, whereas the iPP component with higher crystallization temperature and viscosity move to the skin layer, occurred in the iPP/sPP blend during injection molding process. The phenomenon of low viscosity content migrate to the low shear zone may be due to the crystallization‐induced demixing based upon the significant difference of crystallization temperature in the sPP and iPP. This migration caused the composition inhomogeneity in the blend and influenced the accuracy of crystallinity calculated based upon the initial composition. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of isotactic polypropylene and polyamide‐6/clay nanocomposites (iPP/NPA6) were prepared with an internal batch mixer. A high content of the β‐crystalline form of isotactic polypropylene (β‐iPP) was observed in the injection‐molded samples of the iPP/NPA6 blends, whereas the content of β‐iPP in the iPP/PA6 blends and the iPP/clay composite was low and similar to that of neat iPP. Quiescent melt crystallization was studied by means of wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized optical microscopy. We found that the significant β‐iPP is not formed during quiescent melt crystallization regardless of whether the sample used was the iPP/NPA6 blend or an NPA6 fiber/iPP composite. Further characterization of the injection‐molded iPP/NPA6 revealed a shear‐induced skin–core distribution of β‐iPP and the formation of β‐iPP in the iPP/NPA6 blends is related to the shear flow field during cavity‐filling. In the presence of clay, the deformation ability of the NPA6 domain is decreased, as evidenced by rheological and morphological studies. It is reasonable that the enhanced relative shear, caused by low deformability of the NPA6 domain in the iPP matrix, is responsible for β‐iPP formation in the iPP/NPA6 blends. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Using an experimental setup with a three‐phase intersecting boundary of PTFE/PE/iPP, the nucleation power of PTFE compared to iPP on the PE was studied by TEM. It was found that the nucleation of the PE on the PTFE interface started at a higher temperature than epitaxial nucleation of the PE onto the iPP interface. During cooling of the melt, the growth direction of the PE crystalline lamellae changes in a continuous manner from the transcrystallization direction of the PTFE/PE interface into the heteroepitaxial “crosshatched” orientation of the iPP/PE interface. A (still highly speculative) self‐assembly of the PE macromolecules at the respective interface just in front of the actual crystallization edge is used to explain this observed phenomenon. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
