Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels have been fabricated through a facile one‐pot approach from tetra/bifunctional telechelic macromonomers with epoxy, amine, azide, and alkyne groups by orthogonal double click reactions: epoxy‐amine reaction and copper‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition. Both the crosslinked networks are simultaneously constructed in water from the biocompatible poly (ethylene glycol)‐based macromonomers. The crosslinking density of each network was finely tuned by the macromonomer structure, permitting control of network molecular weights between crosslinks of the final gels. Compared to corresponding single network gels, the IPN gels containing both tightly and loosely crosslinked networks exhibited superior mechanical properties with shear moduli above 15 kPa and fracture stresses over 40 MPa. The synthetic versatility of this one‐pot approach will further establish design principles for the next generation of robust hydrogel materials. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A facile click chemistry method of immobilizing surface‐functionalized polymer vesicles on casted polymeric PAN substrates is described. Microporous PAN membranes were subjected to hydrochloric acid hydrolysis to obtain surface carboxylates. The carboxylic groups were activated with EDC/NHS‐solution and were then reacted with propargylamine to introduce alkyne groups for CuAAC reactions. The alkyne functionality of the modified membrane surface was verified by reaction with an azide functional click dye both before and after the immobilization of azide‐functionalized ABA vesicles. The efficient postfunctionalization of the membrane with alkyne allowed quantitative coverage of the membrane surface with a polymersome monolayer, as confirmed by immobilization of polymerzomes loaded with a fluorescent dye. Polymersome monolayers immobilized on alkyne functionalized PAN‐membranes were characterized by cryo‐SEM and monolayers were confirmed by atom force microscopy. These methods opens up new avenues for preparing membrane based filtration and sensor technologies. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2016 , 54, 2032–2039  相似文献

Current network theory exhibits inconsistencies which show up particularly clearly in deformation of networks prepared by crosslinking a polymer in solution. A check of theory can be obtained if one knows precisely the number of crosslinks in the network and if a range of deformations is applied to the network. In an effort to explore this problem we have examined the relation of shear modulus to crosslink density, primary molecular weight, and polymer concentration for a series of poly(vinyl alcohol) gels at low to intermediate concentrations. Aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) solutions were crosslinked to form infinite networks using terephthalaldehyde. We find a large discrepancy with these poly(vinyl alcohol) gels between measured shear modulus and that calculated from classical elasticity theory assuming quantitative reaction of crosslinking. The ratio of measured to calculated modulus is independent of crosslink density for a given primary molecular weight and concentration. It shows linear dependence on polymer concentration prior to crosslinking and extrapolates to a critical concentration which is consistent with the effective sizes of the polymer molecules.  相似文献

Crosslinked networks were synthesized by copolymerization of mono‐functional tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) with diethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (DEGDMA) or polyethylene glycol dimethacrylates (PEGDMA). By varying the chain length and concentration of the difunctional PEGDMA, we obtained tBA‐PEGDMA copolymer networks while by varying the concentration of difunctional DEGDMA, we obtained tBA‐DEGDMA crosslinked networks. The various materials were submitted to large deformations through uniaxial tension tests. For moderate weight percent of crosslinking agent, up to 20%, the networks showed standard S‐shape stress–strain curves, characteristic of rubber‐like elasticity. Two macromolecular models, the 8‐chain model and the full‐network model, were applied to fit the uniaxial tensile response of the materials. Both models provide good representations of the overall uniaxial stress–strain response of each material. After fitting to stress–strain data, the network models were employed to predict the shear modulus and the elongation at break. Neither the 8‐chain nor the full network model were capable of predicting the failure strain or shear modulus, indicating these models are best used to describe stress–strain relations rather than predict mechanical properties for the network polymers considered here. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Inhomogeneities, that is, nonrelaxing frozen concentration fluctuations, are inevitably present in polymer gels because they are introduced during the crosslinking of the constituent polymer chains in a solvent. Therefore, inhomogeneities increase as the number of crosslinks increases in a gel. The ionization of polymer gels is one of the methods used to suppress inhomogeneities. However, because crosslinking also means a freezing‐in of the conformation and topology of polymer chains in a solvent according to the chemistry of crosslinking, inhomogeneity control is quite sophisticated. In this article, we discuss the relationship between the inhomogeneities and the molecular/environmental parameters of polymer gels, such as the polymer concentration, the degree of crosslinking, the degree of ionization, and the interaction parameter, by considering the memory effect of gels. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The gel properties of two‐component mixed polymer gels are investigated using a cascade model, which assumes that the gel network is formed via the self‐association of one of the two components and the cross‐association of the two components. The effects of the model parameters, such as the equilibrium constants and the functionalities for cross‐associations and self‐associations, on the composition dependence of the modulus and gel point curves are examined to elucidate the contribution of self‐associations to the gel network. The results show that the characteristics of self‐associations become pronounced when the equilibrium constant or the functionality for self‐associations is comparable to that for cross‐associations. The model is applied to analyze the critical gelling concentration data for xanthan/locust bean gum mixed gels, which shows significant self‐associations at high xanthan compositions. The resulting model curves agree well with the experimental data at all temperatures. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the best‐fit equilibrium constant yields values of enthalpy change that are consistent with previous findings. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The use of a thio‐bromo click strategy as an efficient postpolymerization tool is described. Norbornene derivatives bearing an α‐bromo ester could be polymerized using Grubbs 2nd generation initiator to provide α‐bromo ester‐containing homo‐and block copolymers that could be efficiently functionalized through reactions with various thiols. A one‐pot strategy was also used, in which up to four different thiols were reacted simultaneously. This chemistry could also be used as an efficient cross‐linking strategy to form ROMP‐based gels as well as a tool for terminal functionalization of polypropylene‐based oligomers. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The characteristics of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)–acrylate hydrogel networks were investigated as a function of the ethanol–water solvent composition during free‐radical crosslinking copolymerization. Macromonomer (88% ω‐methoxy‐PEG–acrylate and 10% ω‐phenoxy‐PEG–acrylate) and crosslinker (2% PEG–diacrylate) concentrations were kept constant. As the copolymerization progressed, the polymer solution in 100% ethanol became increasingly turbid, indicating the development of a heterogeneous network structure. In 100% water, however, the initially turbid polymer solution became increasingly transparent as the crosslinking copolymerization progressed. All the gels were optically clear upon equilibration in water. Kinetic studies, with attenuated total reflectance‐infrared, showed a long induction period, along with a lowered reaction rate, in 100% ethanol, and a decrease in conversion with an increase in ethanol content. These results agree with the UV analysis of the sol fractions, which indicated an increase in the amounts of unreacted PEG–acrylates with an increase in the ethanol content. The gels which were formed with a high ethanol concentration exhibited lower Young's modulus and higher swelling ability, suggesting that the network structure was significantly affected by the solvent composition during free‐radical crosslinking copolymerization. From the stress–strain and swelling experiments, the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter was evaluated. The creep characteristics of the hydrogels were modeled with two Kelvin elements. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 2677–2684, 2002  相似文献

A facile, efficient approach for preparation of functionalized aromatic polysulfones by postpolymerization modification with thiol‐ene click chemistry is described. The key synthetic strategy is to incorporate a pendant vinyl ether group into polysulfones as a reactive precursor with controlled degrees of functionalization. Synthetic utility of the pendant alkenyl group is demonstrated by generating diverse polymer derivatives using thiol‐ene functionalization including glycosylated polysulfone. The highly reactive alkene platform in the polymer affords convenient, metal‐free, and azide‐free click transformations to create diverse ranges of new functionalized polysulfones that could be applied in various applications. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The Brownian motion of probe particles in aqueous solutions of poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) and in chemically crosslinked PVA gels has been studied by diffusing-wave spectroscopy (DWS). At long time scales the measurements allow us to determine the effect of the crosslinking ratio on the macroscopic viscosity of sols and the shear modulus of gels. The local shear modulus of gels as obtained from the characteristic length of the Brownian cage was found to agree with that measured by classical rheometry and dynamic light scattering (DLS). These microrheological techniques were applied to two polymer gel systems. Substrate induced gradient structure of hydrogels was studied from a microrheological point of view using DLS. It is clearly seen that hydrophobic substrate induces weakly crosslinked network formation at the interface region up to a few millimeters as expected from other experimental facts. Magnetic particle motion in gels under external magnetic field was investigated by DWS. The translational motion of the magnetic particles in gels due to the alternating magnetic force can be detected and found to be superimposed on the relaxation due to the thermal motion.  相似文献

We report the synthesis of high‐molecular‐weight linear polyisobutylenes (PIBs) and PIB networks from low‐molecular‐weight PIB by thiol‐ene click chemistry. Thus, liquid allyl‐telechelic PIB was reacted with small di‐ and tri‐thiols, and the thiolated intermediates chain‐extended by UV‐ or thermally induced free radical initiation to linear and crosslinked products. PIB networks were also prepared by crosslinking SH‐telechelic PIB with a small triallyl compound. Linear products were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and GPC, and networks by FTIR spectroscopy, extractables, swelling, and permanent set. The effect of reaction conditions (nature of thiol chain extender, concentration of photo‐ and thermal initiators, UV radiation time, and reagent concentrations) on chain extension and crosslinking was investigated. Under well‐defined conditions high‐molecular‐weight PIBs and tight PIB networks were prepared. Thiol‐ene click chemistry provides novel thiolated PIB derivatives and is a useful strategy for the convenient preparation of high‐molecular‐weight rubbery PIBs and tight PIB networks from low‐molecular‐weight PIB precursors. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe a one‐pot strategy for the fabrication of novel slide‐ring (SR) gels based on supramolecular polyrotaxane structures with cyclodextrin‐derived cross‐links and additional free cyclodextrin ring spacers co‐threaded onto the polymer backbones. Photoinitiated thiol‐yne click coupling leads to facile hydrogel fabrication from pseudo‐polyrotaxanes prepared in situ from β‐cyclodextrin derivatives and bifunctional polyethylene glycol (PEG). The obtained SR gels were characterized by NMR spectroscopy using a polyrotaxane model compound with the ratio of cyclodextrin sliding spacers to PEG backbone controlled by adjusting the feed ratio of the starting materials. This structural tuning leads to dramatic changes in the rheological properties, mechanical properties, and swelling behavior of the SR gels. In addition, the coupling of simple synthetic procedures with enhanced properties offers a versatile approach to novel elastomeric materials. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A viscoelastic approach of the compression set test is addressed in this work. This test measures the ability of rubber compounds to retain elastic properties after prolonged action of compressive stresses. Elastic properties were tested by recording the normal stress under a constant deformation of 25% with a laboratory rheometer. Considering the Boltzmann superposition principle, compression set data were modeled from the relaxation of Young's modulus, described by a Maxwell spectrum plus a constant E defining the elastic properties at the long times. This approach was developed with the copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate (EVA) networks crosslinked by radical chemistry and by an exchange reaction between acetate groups and silane compounds as crosslinking agents. Regarding the recovery of the elastic properties, radical chemistry provided better results than the exchange reaction for the identical crosslinking density of the network. Then, the Curro–Pincus molecular approach was developed to understand the influence of the microstructure of the EVA network on the elastic properties. The difference of the elastic properties between the two networks crosslinked by two different chemistry means was accounted for by considering the probability of having a dangling end of n units for a random crosslinking process. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The elastic properties of polymer networks formed via the radical polymerization of macromonomers with two polymerizable end groups are studied via computer simulation. It is shown that variation in the average functionality of network junctions, f avg, in a wide range (∼5–55) leads to a significant change in the shear modulus of the network. According to experiments with real networks (gels of poly(ethylene oxide) macromonomers), the shear modulus increases as f avg increases. This effect is not due only to a decrease in the fluctuations of positions of network junctions. The main cause of the increase in the modulus is that the modulus component due to interaction between polymer chains (entanglements) increases as the functionality of junctions in the investigated networks increases. The conclusion is made that these networks gain entanglements during the formation of network junctions with high functionality rather than inherit them from the solution of macromonomer chains.  相似文献

Studies on the nonlinear viscoelastic behavior of styrene‐[ethylene‐(ethylene‐propylene)]‐styrene block copolymer (SEEPS) were carried out. The nonlinear viscoelastic region was determined through dynamic strain sweep test, and the critical shear strain (γc) of transition from linear viscoelastic region to nonlinear viscoealstic region was obtained. The relaxation time and modulus corresponding to the characteristic relaxation modes were also acquired through simulating the linear relaxation modulus curves using Maxwell model, and the damping functions were evaluated. Meanwhile, it is found that the nonlinear relaxation modulus obtained at relatively low shear strains follows the strain–time separation principle, and the damping function of SEEPS can be fit to Laun double exponential model well. Moreover, the successive start‐up of shear behavior, the steady shear behavior, and the relaxation behavior after steady shear were investigated, respectively. The results showed that Wagner model, derived from the K‐BKZ (Kearsley‐Bernstein, Kearsley, Zapas) constitutive equation, could simulate the experiment data well, and in addition, experiment data under the lower shear rates are almost identical with the fitting data, but there exists some deviation for data under considerable high shear rates. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fabrication and functionalization of hydrogels from well‐defined dendron‐polymer‐dendron conjugates is accomplished using sequential radical thiol‐ene “click” reactions. The dendron‐polymer conjugates were synthesized using an azide‐alkyne “click” reaction of alkene‐containing polyester dendrons bearing an alkyne group at their focal point with linear poly(ethylene glycol)‐bisazides. Thiol‐ene “click” reaction was used for crosslinking these alkene functionalized dendron‐polymer conjugates using a tetrathiol‐based crosslinker to provide clear and transparent hydrogels. Hydrogels with residual alkene groups at crosslinking sites were obtained by tuning the alkene‐thiol stoichiometry. The residual alkene groups allow efficient postfunctionalization of these hydrogel matrices with thiol‐containing molecules via a subsequent radical thiol‐ene reaction. The photochemical nature of radical thiol‐ene reaction was exploited to fabricate micropatterned hydrogels. Tunability of functionalization of these hydrogels, by varying dendron generation and polymer chain length was demonstrated by conjugation of a thiol‐containing fluorescent dye. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Developing the use of polymers from renewable sources to build hydrogels with tailored mechanical properties has become an increasing focus of research. The impact of the thermo‐reversible physical networks of gelatin (arising from the formation of triple‐helices) on the structure formation of a chemical network, obtained by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde (a non‐catalytic crosslinker), was studied using optical rotation, oscillatory rheology, and large strain mechanical deformation. We observed a direct correlation between the storage shear modulus of the chemical network grown in the gel state (i.e., simultaneously with the physical network) and the amount of gelatin residues in the triple‐helix conformation (χ). Since χ is directly affected by temperature, the value of the storage modulus is also sensitive to changes in the temperature of gel formation. χ values as low as 12% lead to an increase of the shear storage modulus of the crosslinked gel by a factor of 2.7, when compared to a chemical network obtained in the sol state (i.e., in the absence of a physical network). Our results show that the physical network acts as a template, which leads to a greater density of the chemical crosslinks and a corresponding higher elastic modulus, beyond what is otherwise achieved in the absence of a physical network. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Organic–inorganic hybrid gels have been synthesized from a multi‐vinyl functional cyclic siloxane, 1,3,5,7‐tetravinyltetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (TVMCTS), or a cubic silsesquioxane, octavinyloctasilasesquioxane (PVOSS), and α,ω‐dithiol compounds, 1,6‐hexanedithiol (HDT), 1,10‐decanedithiol (DDT), using thiol‐ene reaction in toluene. The network structure of the resulting gels, mesh size and mesh size distribution, was quantitatively characterized by means of a scanning microscopic light scattering (SMILS). The gels obtained from TVMCTS‐HDT formed homogeneous network structure with 1.5–1.6 nm mesh. Relaxation peaks derived from large clusters and/or micro gels were detected in the SMILS analysis of the TVMCTS‐DDT, PVOSS‐HDT, and PVOSS‐DDT gels besides those from the small meshes. The organic–inorganic hybrid gels were also synthesized from TVMCTS, PVOSS with α,ω‐diazide compounds, 1,6‐hexanediazide (HDA), 1,10‐decanediazide (DDA), using azide‐alkene reaction in toluene. All the gels obtained with the azide‐alkene reaction formed the homogeneous network structure. Enthalpy relaxation at the glass transition of the dried samples was detected by differential scanning calorimetry to study the network uniformity of the original gels. The gels synthesized by the azide‐alkene reaction showed larger enthalpy than the gels synthesized by the thiol‐ene reaction, indicating homogeneous network structure in the former gels. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two complementary tandem strategies based on the one‐pot combination of click chemistry and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) are studied. Initially, functionalized random copolymers are obtained by copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and propargyl methacrylate simultaneously to the click chemistry coupling of a monofunctional azide. Then, an approach based on the copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and 11‐azido‐undecanoyl methacrylate simultaneously to the click chemistry coupling of a monofunctional alkyne is also investigated. For both the approach, polymerization and click chemistry coupling are catalyzed by CuBr and bipyridine (Bipy) in diphenylether at 90 °C. The [Bipy]/[CuBr] ratio is varied from 2 to 25 and the ratio of functionalized comonomer from 20 to 70 mol %. Both the tandem strategies proceed with good yields (50–80%) and allow a good control over the characteristics of the resulting random copolymers and macromolecular brushes (Mn ~ 15,000–40,000 g/mol and PDI ~ 1.3–2.0) as well as quantitative click functionalization as characterized by 1H NMR and size exclusion chromatography analyses. Although the click process is generally completed at the early stage of the process, the rate of polymerization depends on the amount of bipyridine involved. It was found that extending most of the polymerization process out of the click reaction regime results in a better control of the polymerization, preventing the significant occurrence of side reactions. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. At the start of our research program concerned with the elucidation of the crosslinking polymerization mechanism leading to interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) formation, in which IPNs consist of both polymethacrylates and polyurethane (PU) networks, this article deals with the polyaddition crosslinking reaction leading to PU network formation. Therefore, 2‐methacryloyloxyethyl isocyanate (MOI) was radically copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of CBr4 as a chain‐transfer agent. The resulting poly(MMA‐co‐MOI)s, having pendant isocyanate (NCO) groups as novel multifunctional polyisocyanates, were used for polyaddition crosslinking reactions with ethylene glycol as a typical diol. The second‐order rate constants depended on both the functionality of poly(MMA‐co‐MOI) and the NCO group concentration. The actual gel points were compared with the theoretical ones calculated according to Macosko's equation; the deviation of the actual gel point from the theoretical value became more remarkable for a greater functionality of poly(MMA‐co‐MOI) and at a lower NCO group concentration or at a lower poly(MMA‐co‐MOI) concentration. These are discussed mechanistically, with consideration given to the significance of intramolecular cyclization and intramolecular crosslinking reactions leading to the shrinkage of the molecular size of the prepolymer, along with the data of the intrinsic viscosities of resulting prepolymers and the swelling ratios of resulting gels. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
