RF plasma excitation of methane has been studied in an effort to optimize the reaction conditions for a selective partial oxidation of methane. The reaction products of RF-excited methane are C2 hydrocarbons such as ethane and acetylene when O2 is not used. The introduction of a few percent of O2, however, is found to switch the selectivity in favor of CO while CO2 formation is suppressed down to a level below a few percent. Interestingly, in the low O2 ratio regime (0–0.6), the selectivity between CO and C2 hydrocarbons is observed to vary systematically in response to the detailed reaction conditions, including flow rate, pressure and applied RF power, which are explained by the competition between coupling and partial oxidation reactions. Variation in the density and the residence time of the active species in the plasma is suggested to determine the overall reaction pathways. The present results suggest a possibility of a selective production of the partial oxidation products of methane such as CO with a high selectivity and a high conversion efficiency using controlled RF plasma from methane and O2.

The conversion of C1–C4 hydrocarbons into gaseous and liquid products in a dielectric barrier discharge plasma in the presence of water has been studied. The formation of a deposit on the electrode surface is prevented by introducing water in the liquid state into a gaseous hydrocarbon stream, a finding that has been confirmed by IR spectroscopic study of the electrode surface. Hydrogen and C2+ hydrocarbons have been detected among the gaseous products of conversion, the liquid products being represented by C6–C10+ alkanes. The total liquid products have amounted to 13.4, 26.0, or 36.6% for the methane, propane, or n-butane conversion, respectively. A 10% propane or butane admixture to methane increases the yield of the liquid products to make 22.0 and 31.7% for the methane–propane and the methane–butane mixture, respectively.

Experimental investigation has been conducted to convert methane into higher hydrocarbons in the presence of carbon dioxide within dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) plasmas. The objectives of cofeed of carbon dioxide are to inhibit carbon deposit and to increase methane conversion. The products from this plasma methane conversion include: (1) syngas (H2+CO), (2) gaseous hydrocarbons containing ethylene, acetylene, and propylene, (3) liquid hydrocarbons, (4) plasma-polymerized film, and (5) oxygenates. The selectivity of products is subject to the DBD plasma-reactive conditions and catalyst applied. The liquid hydrocarbons produced by this way are highly branched, which represents a better fuel production.

Direct conversion of methane, other hydrocarbons, and alcohol at lower temperatures can be achieved using plasma or an electric field and catalysts. Non‐equilibrium plasma enables activation of stable molecules including methane, carbon dioxide, and water, even at low temperatures, by virtue of high electron energy. Use of a hybrid system of plasma and catalyst provided high conversion and selectivity to products by virtue of adsorption on the catalyst. Imposing a DC electric field to the catalyst bed also promotes catalytic reactions, even at low temperatures. Two mechanisms for electro‐catalytic reactions are proposed for the DC electric field imposition: reactant activation by surface protonics and production of active surface oxygen species on the catalyst. This review presents summaries of these novel processes.

The experiments are carried out in the system of continuous flow reactors with dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) for studies on the conversion of natural gas to C2 hydrocarbons through plasma catalysis under the atmosphere pressure and room temperature. The influence of discharge frequency, structure of electrode, discharge voltage, number of electrode, ratio of H2/CH4, flow rate and catalyst on conversion of methane and selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons are investigated. At the same time, the reaction process is investigated. Higher conversion of methane and selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons are achieved and deposited carbons are eliminated by proper choice of parameters. The appropriate operation parameters in dielectric-barrier discharge plasma field are that the supply voltage is 20–40 kV (8.4–40 W), the frequency of power supply is 20 kHz, the structure of (b) electrode is suitable, and the flow of methane is 20–60 mL · min−1. The conversion of methane can reach 45%, the selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons is 76%, and the total selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons and C3 hydrocarbons is nearly 100%. The conversion of methane increases with the increase of voltage and decreases with the flow of methane increase; the selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons decreases with the increase of voltage and increases with the flow of methane increase. The selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons is improved with catalyst for conversion of natural gas to C2 hydrocarbons in plasma field. Methane molecule collision with radicals is mainly responsible for product formation.

Conversion of methane to higher hydrocarbon products, in particular, aromatic hydrocarbons has been achieved with good methane conversion and selectivity to aromatic products over heterogeneous catalysts using both high power pulsed microwave and rf energy. For example, under microwave irradiation > 85% conversion of methane and 60% selectivity to aromatics could be achieved. Cu, Ni, Fe and Al metallic materials are highly effective catalysts for the aromatization of methane via microwave heating; however, with a variety of supported catalysts the major products were C2 hydrocarbons and the conversion of methane was low. The use of sponge, wire and net forms of these metal catalysts was found advantageous in effective methane conversion. The reactions are considered to be free radical in nature and to proceed through an intermediate stage involving formation of acetylene. The influence of catalyst nature and configuration, as well as the microwave and rf irradiation parameters on the reaction efficiency and product selectivity has been examined in both batch and continuous flow conditions.

The direct non-oxidative conversion of methane to higher hydrocarbons in non-thermal plasma, namely dielectric barrier discharge and corona discharge, has been investigated experimentally at atmospheric pressure. In dielectric barrier discharge, the methane is mainly converted to ethane and propane with small amounts of unsaturated and higher hydrocarbons. While in corona discharge, methane was activated mainly to acetylene with small amount of other higher hydrocarbons. Decreasing the gas flow or increasing power input will improve the methane conversion and product yields. It is found that the methane conversion and main product yield against the input specific energy were special functions in both dielectric barrier discharge and corona discharge, independent of the reactor size, and whether fixing flow rate or power input and changing the power input or flow rate. The corona discharge is a promising alternative method for methane conversion to produce acetylene and hydrogen at low temperature.

The plasma technology served as a tool in unconventional catalysis has been used in natural gas conversion, because the traditional catalytic methane oxidative coupling reaction must be performed at high temperature on account of the stability of methane molecule. The focus of this research is to develop a process of converting methane to C2 hydrocarbons with non-equilibrium plasma technology at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. It was found that methane conversion increased and the selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons decreased with the voltage. The optimum input voltage range was 40-80 V corresponding to high yield of C2 hydrocarbons. Methane conversion decreased and the selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons increased with the inlet flow rate of methane. The proper methane flow rate was 20-40 ml/min (corresponding residence time 10-20 s). The experimental results show that methane conversion was 47% and the selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons was 40% under the proper condition using atmospheric DBD cold plasma technology. It was found that the breakdown voltage of methane VB was determined by the type of electrode and the discharge gap width in this glow discharge reactor. The breakdown voltage of methane VB,min derived from the Paschen law equation was established.

Methane is converted to C2 products in a microwave plasma under pressure up to 400 torr at maximum plasma power of 100 W. Steam is introduced with methane into the plasma zone in order to suppress coke formation. Major products are C2 hydrocarbons. Small amounts of benzene are also formed. Very small amounts of some unusual highly unsaturated hydrocarbons are also formed. Oxygenated products are CO and CO2. The conversion and yields are related to experimental variables by an empirical second order linear model. The conversion of methane ranges from 10 to 60%. The yield of C2 products ranges from 5 to 68%. The major C2 product is acetylene.

A kinetic study of methane conversion by a dinitrogen microwave plasma
Conversion of CH4 with a N2 microwave plasma (2.45 GHz) is studied. The experiments cover the absorbed microwave power range 300–700 W with 17–62% of methane in the gas mixture, with pressures of 10–40 mbar and flow rates of 140–650 ml· min–1. The yields of C2 hydrocarbons and dihydrogen are analyzed by gas chromatography. The distance of methane addition downstream of the plasma plays an important role on the composition and the concentration of the products obtained. This distance mainly determines the energy concentrated in the active species of the plasma when they react with methane. Different behaviors for acetylene formation, on the one hand, and for ethane and ethene formation, on the other hand, have been observed, and this finding allows us to propose a kinetic mechanism for the decay of methane and for the formation of C2 hydrocarbons.

Methane conversion using an electric discharge has been studied for many years. Recently, many research groups have developed high-frequency pulsed plasma reaction for methane conversion to higher hydrocarbons and synthesis gas. CO2 reforming of methane to synthesis gas has also attracted considerable interest as a method of utilization of the greenhouse gases, CO2 and CH4, which occupy most of man-made greenhouse gases. In this study, the influence of pulse form of applied voltage on methane and carbon dioxide conversions and product selectivity has been investigated using a cylindrical type DBD reactor. For this purpose, two kinds of power supply were compared, that is, AC power supply which has a high-frequency sinusoidal wave form, and AC pulse power supply which has modified AC pulse wave form. The conversions of methane and carbon dioxide were enhanced using pulsed plasma. The lower pulse width was more profitable economically.

The influence of water on the plasma assisted conversion of methane and carbon dioxide in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plug flow reactor was studied. The plasma at atmospheric pressure was ignited by a power supply at a frequency of 13.56?MHz. Product formation was studied at a power range between 35 and 70?W. The concentrations of the three gases were altered and diluted with helium to 3?%. FTIR spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy were applied to analyze the inlet and the product streams. The main product of this process are hydrogen, carbon monoxide and ethane. Ethene, ethine, methanol and formaldehyde are generated beside the main products in this DBD in lower concentrations. The conversion of methane, the ratio of the synthesis gas components (n(H2):n(CO)), and the yield of oxygenated hydrocarbons and hydrogen increases by adding water. The total consumed energy reaches lower values for small amounts of water. Additional water does not influence the generated amount of C2 hydrocarbons and of CO, but decreases the carbon dioxide conversion.

Pd-containing ionic liquid (IL) l-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (C6MIMBF4) immobilized on γ-Al2O3 (Pd-IL/γ-Al2O3) was prepared and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The influences of C6MIMBF4 loading and Pd on methane conversion to C2 hydrocarbons under cold plasma were investigated. FTIR and SEM analyses indicated that C6MIMBF4 had been successfully immobilized on γ-Al2O3 and the C6MIMBF4 showed excellent stability under cold plasma. The results of BET and methane conversion showed that with the increase in immobilization amount of C6MIMBF4 onto γ-Al2O3, the specific surface area and pore volume of IL/γ-Al2O3 decreased, while the selectivity and yield of C2 hydrocarbons increased. The selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons was 94.6% when the loading of C6MIMBF4 was 40%, and the percentage of C2H4 in C2 hydrocarbons was as high as 64% when using Pd-IL/γ-Al2O3 as a catalyst with no conventional thermal reduction treatment. Optical emission spectra (OES) from the cold plasma reactor during methane conversion were also studied. The results indicated that the intensity of the C2, CH, H, and C active species from methane and hydrogen decomposition increased when IL/γ-Al2O3 or Pd-IL/γ-Al2O3 was introduced into the plasma system. Based on the analyses of the gas product and OES spectra, it can be concluded that the surface catalyzed reactions between plasma and ionic liquid were very important for the reduction of Pd2+ and the formation of C2H4  相似文献

Theoretical analysis of the electron energy distribution function by the Boltzmann equation and experimental investigations into the effect of hydrocarbons (methane, acetylene and ethylene) on NO removal efficiency are presented at varying temperatures. The experiments were carried out using dielectric barrier discharge plasmas at 298, 363 and 403 K, respectively. Ethylene greatly enhanced NO conversion because of its stronger affinity for the O radical. NO conversion in the presence of methane and acetylene was much lower than with ethylene at all temperatures. With an increase in temperature, E/N increased, the molecular ionization strengthened and the electron mean energy increased, resulting in more active species generated through ionizing and exciting reactions at the same energy density. High-energy electrons accelerated the decomposition rate of hydrocarbons, and the rate constants of some major reactions were increased, producing more strong oxidizing radicals (HO2). Therefore, NO removal efficiency was increased when the temperature was higher.

The non-oxidative dehydro-oligomerization of methane to higher molecular weight hydrocarbons such as aroma tics and C2 hydrocarbons in a low temperature range of 773-973 K with Mo/HZSM-5,Mo-Zr/HZSM-5 and Mo-W/HZSM-5 catalysts is studied. The means for enhancing the activity and stability of the Mo-containing catalysts under the reaction conditions is reported.Quite a stable methane conversion rate of over 10% with a high selectivity to the higher hydrocarbons has been obtained at a temperature of 973 K.Pure methane conversions of about 5.2% and 2.0% have been obtained at 923 and 873 K,respectively. In addition, accompanied by the C2-C3 mixture,tht- methane reaction can be initiated even at a lower temperature and the conversion rate of methane is enhanced by the presence of tne initiator of C2-C3 hydrocarbons.Compared with methane oxidative coupling to ethylene, the novel way for methane transformation is significant and reasonable for its lower reaction temperatures and high selectivity to the desired prod

The authors recently developed a high-frequency pulsed plasma process for methane conversion to acetylene and hydrogen using a co-axial cylindrical (CAC) type of reactor. The energy efficiency represented by methane conversion rate per unit input energy has been improved so that such a pulsed plasma has potential for commercial acetylene production. A pulsed plasma consists of a pulsed corona discharge and a pulsed spark discharge. Most of energy is injected over the duration of the pulsed spark discharge. Methane conversion using this kind of pulsed plasma is a kind of pyrolysis enhanced by the pulsed spark discharge. In this study, a point-to-point (PTP) type of reactor that can produce a discharge channel over the duration of a pulse discharge was used for the pulsed plasma conversion of methane. The energy efficiency and carbon formation on electrodes have been improved. The influences of pulse frequency and pulse voltage on methane conversion rate and product selectivity were investigated. The features of methane conversion using PTP and CAC reactors were discussed.
