Hybrid RANS/LES simulations of two incompressible jets are performed with the Zonal Detached Eddy Simulation (ZDES). Two functioning modes of the ZDES for the selection of RANS and DES areas are evaluated, namely the user-defined mode (mode 1) and the global- or automatic- mode (mode 2). The RANS-to-LES transition occurs quickly downstream of the nozzle exit and is found to involve the same physics as a laminar to turbulent transition with vortex pairing near the nozzle exit. The effect of the delay in the RANS-to-LES transition on the jet flow development is analyzed. In particular, the delay in the formation of small-scale turbulent structures results in too high turbulence levels in the mixing layers. Furthermore, it is shown, for two cases, that the injection of synthetic turbulence at the nozzle inlet, originally targeted at reproducing the experimental turbulence level in the jet core, has a significant impact on the mixing layer as it accelerates the RANS-to-LES transition, reduces the spatial wavelength of the vortex pairing and promotes the production of fine-scale turbulence which leads to a better agreement with experiments.  相似文献

Hybrid Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes–Large Eddy Simulation is a trend which is becoming of common use in aerodynamics but has seldom been employed to simulate reactive flows. Such methods, like the Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) presented in this article, have been created to treat near wall flows with a RANS approach while switching to LES in the separated flow region. It is indeed an affordable solution to simulate complex and unsteady compressible flows and to have access to accurate skin friction and wall thermal fluxes. In order to validate this technique in combustion, we chose a simple and well documented Backward Facing Step combustor. To account for turbulent combustion a Dynamic Thickened Flame was used. The results obtained on this case show a good agreement with the experimental database and are of the same quality as LES in the separated region for both inert and reactive flows. One of the most important and challenging topics in the Large Eddy Simulation of turbulent flows is the connection of the LES technique to the well known and largely used RANS approach where the Navier–Stokes equations are Reynolds averaged. The hybridation of LES and RANS is not only important for its possible practical use, (a rational use of the computational means in different zones), but also from a theoretical point of view, and one possible procedure consists of blending RANS and LES models in the transition zone. In this paper a new filtering technique based on blending filters which transitions smoothly between LES and RANS is proposed and the associated universal model for the subgrid scale stresses is derived. The qualities of a DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) and a PANS (Partially-Averaged Navier–Stokes) hybrid RANS/LES model, both based on the kω RANS turbulence model of Wilcox (2008, “Formulation of the kω turbulence model revisited” AIAA J., 46: 2823–2838), are analysed for simulation of plane impinging jets at a high nozzle-plate distance (H/B = 10, Re = 13,500; H is nozzle-plate distance, B is slot width; Reynolds number based on slot width and maximum velocity at nozzle exit) and a low nozzle-plate distance (H/B = 4, Re = 20,000). The mean velocity field, fluctuating velocity components, Reynolds stresses and skin friction at the impingement plate are compared with experimental data and LES (Large Eddy Simulation) results. The kω DES model is a double substitution type, following Davidson and Peng (2003, “Hybrid LES–RANS modelling: a one-equation SGS model combined with a kω model for predicting recirculating flows” Int. J. Numer. Meth. Fluids, 43: 1003–1018). This means that the turbulent length scale is replaced by the grid size in the destruction term of the k-equation and in the eddy viscosity formula. The kω PANS model is derived following Girimaji (2006, “Partially-Averaged Navier–Stokes model for turbulence: a Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes to Direct Numerical Simulation bridging method” J. Appl. Mech., 73: 413–421). The turbulent length scale in the PANS model is constructed from the total turbulent kinetic energy and the sub-filter dissipation rate. Both hybrid models change between RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes) and LES based on the cube root of the cell volume. The hybrid techniques, in contrast to RANS, are able to reproduce the turbulent flow dynamics in the shear layers of the impacting jet. The change from RANS to LES is much slower however for the PANS model than for the DES model on fine enough grids. This delays the break-up process of the vortices generated in the shear layers with as a consequence that the DES model produces better results than the PANS model.  相似文献

Modifications are proposed of two recently developed hybrid CFD strategies, Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) and DDES with Improved wall-modeling capability (IDDES). The modifications are aimed at fine-tuning of these approaches to the k-ω SST background RANS model. The first one includes recalibrated empirical constants in the shielding function of the SA-based DDES model which are shown to be suboptimal (not providing the needed level of elimination of the Model Stress Depletion (MSD)) for the SST-based DDES model. For the SST-IDDES variant, in addition to that, a simplification of the original SA–based formulation is proposed, which does not cause any visible degradation of the model performance. Both modifications are extensively tested on a range of attached and separated flows (developed channel, backward-facing step, periodic hills, wall-mounted hump, and hydrofoil with trailing edge separation).  相似文献

Characteristics of supersonic mixing and combustion with hydrogen injection upstream of a cavity flameholder are investigated numerically using hybrid RANS/LES (Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes/Large-Eddy Simulation) method. Two types of inflow boundary layer are considered. One is a laminar-like boundary layer with inflow thickness of $\delta_{\inf } = 0.0$ and the other is a turbulent boundary layer with inflow thickness of $\delta_{\inf } = 2.5\,{\text{mm}}$ . The hybrid RANS/LES method acts as a DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) model for the laminar-like inflow condition and a wall-modeled LES for the turbulent inflow condition where the recycling/rescaling method is adopted. Although the turbulent inflow seems to have just minor influences on the supersonic cavity flow without fuel injection, its effects on the mixing and combustion processes are great. It is found that the unsteady turbulent structures in upstream incoming boundary layer interact with the injection jet, resulting in fluctuations of the upstream recirculation region and bow shock, and induce quick dispersion of the hydrogen fuel jet, which enhances the mixing as well as subsequent combustion.  相似文献

A transport model for hybrid RANS/LES simulation of passive scalars is proposed. It invokes a dynamically computed subgrid Prandtl number. The method is based on computing test-filter fluxes. The formulation proves to be especially effective on coarse grids, as occur in DES. After testing it in a wall resolved LES, the present formulation is applied to the Adaptive DDES model of Yin et al. (Phys. Fluids 27, 025105 2015). It is validated by turbulent channel flow and turbulent boundary layer computations.  相似文献

The scope of this work is to demonstrate the applicability of an eddy resolving turbulence model in a turbomachinery configuration. The model combines the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) approach. The point of interest of the present investigation is the unsteady rotating stall phenomenon occurring at low part load conditions. Since RANS turbulence models often fail to predict separation correctly, a LES like model is expected to give superior results. In this investigation the scale-adaptive simulation (SAS) model is used. This model avoids the grid dependence appearing in the Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) modelling strategy. The simulations are validated with transient measurement data. The present results demonstrate, that both models are able to predict the major stall frequency at part load. Results are similar for URANS and SAS, with advantages in predicting minor stall frequencies for the turbulence resolving model.  相似文献

A numerical investigation of the behaviour of a cavitation pocket developing along a Venturi geometry has been performed using a compressible one-fluid hybrid RANS/LES solver. The interplay between turbulence and cavitation regarding the unsteadiness and structure of the flow is complex and not well understood. This constitutes a determinant point to accurately simulate the dynamic of sheet cavities. Various turbulent approaches are tested: a new Scale-Adaptive model and the Detached Eddy Simulation. 2D and 3D simulations are compared with the experimental data. Towards a Unified Turbulence Simulation Approach for Wall-Bounded Flows   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes/Large-Eddy Simulation (RANS/LES) methodology has received considerable attention in recent years, especially in its application to wall-bounded flows at high-Reynolds numbers. In the conventional zonal hybrid approach, eddy-viscosity-type RANS and subgrid scale models are applied in the RANS and LES zones, respectively. In contrast, the non-zonal hybrid approach uses only a generalized turbulence model, which provides a unified simulation approach that spans the continuous spectrum of modeling/simulation schemes from RANS to LES. A particular realization of the non-zonal approach, known as partially resolved numerical simulation (PRNS), uses a generalized turbulence model obtained from a rescaling of a conventional RANS model through the introduction of a resolution control function F R , where F R is used to characterize the degree of modeling required to represent the unresolved scales of turbulent motion. A new generalized functional form for F R in PRNS is proposed in this study, and its performance is compared with unsteady RANS (URANS) and LES computations for attached and separated wall-bounded turbulent flows. It is demonstrated that PRNS behaves similarly to LES, but outperforms URANS in general.  相似文献

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) using a dynamic Smagorinsky type subgridstress (SGS) model and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) are applied toprediction and investigation of the flow around a sphere at a Reynoldsnumber of 104 in the subcritical regime. In this regime the boundarylayers at separation are laminar, and transition to turbulence occursfarther downstream in the separated shear layers via Kelvin–Helmholtz(K–H) instabilities. The dynamic eddy viscosity model of Germano et al.(Physics of Fluids 3 (1991) 1760–1765) is used in the LES, while the current implementation of the DESemploys a formulation based on the Spalart–Allmaras (S–A) model. DES isa hybrid approach in which the closure is a modification to theproduction/destruction term of the original Reynolds-AveragedNavier–Stokes (RANS) model, reducing to RANS in the attached regions,and to LES away from the wall. In the present work where we simulate theflow over a sphere in the subcritical regime in which the boundarylayers at separation are laminar, DES can be viewed as LES with adifferent SGS model. Effects of the discretization scheme used toapproximate the convective terms are considered, along with sensitivityof predictions to changes in the additional model coefficient, C DES, in the DES formulation. DES and LES yield similar predictions of the wakestructure, large-scale vortex shedding and the Strouhal numberassociated with the low frequency mode in the wake. Predictions ofquantities such as the drag coefficient, wake frequencies, position oflaminar separation on the sphere, and the mean pressure andskin-friction distributions along the sphere are in good agreement withthe measurements of Achenbach (Journal of Fluid Mechanics 54 (1972) 565–575). Predictions of the primaryReynolds shear stress, turbulent kinetic energy, eddy viscosity, andturbulent dissipation for the two models are also similar. In addition,both models successfully resolve the formation of the vortex tubes inthe detached shear layers along with the value of the Strouhal numberassociated with the high frequency instability mode, provided that thelevel of numerical dissipation introduced by the discretization schemeremains sufficiently low. A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of turbulent flow over an airfoil near stall is performed. Results of the LES are compared with those of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations using two well-known turbulence models, namely the Baldwin-Lomax model and the Spalart-Allmaras model. The subgrid scale model used for the LES is the filtered structure function model. All simulations are performed using the same structured multi-block code. In order to reduce the CPU time, an implicit time stepping method is used for the LES. The purpose of this study is to show the possibilities and limitations of LES of complex flows associated with aeronautical applications using state of the art simulation techniques. Typical flow features are captured by the LES such as the adverse-pressure gradient and flow retardation. Visualization of instantaneous flow fields shows the typical streaky structures in the near-wall region.  相似文献

A synthetic turbulence generation (STG) method for subsonic and supersonic flows at low and moderate Reynolds numbers to provide inflow distributions of zonal Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) – large-eddy simulation (LES) methods is presented. The STG method splits the LES inflow region into three planes where a local velocity signal is decomposed from the turbulent flow properties of the upstream RANS solution. Based on the wall-normal position and the local flow Reynolds number, specific length and velocity scales with different vorticity content are imposed at the inlet plane of the boundary layer. The quality of the STG method for incompressible and compressible zero-pressure gradient boundary layers is shown by comparing the zonal RANS–LES data with pure LES, pure RANS, and direct numerical simulation (DNS) solutions. The distributions of the time and spanwise wall-shear stress, Reynolds stress distributions, and two point correlations of the zonal RANS–LES simulations are smooth in the transition region and in good agreement with the pure LES and reference DNS findings. The STG approach reduces the RANS-to-LES transition length to less than four boundary-layer thicknesses.  相似文献

The oscillating flow of an incompressible fluid over a circular cylinder is investigated by solving the vorticity/stream-function version of the two-dimensional Navier Stokes equations using a finite-difference Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method. Two different subgrid scale (SGS) models are tested. They are the classical Smagorinsky model and Yoshizawa's Two-Scale Direct-Interaction Approximation (TSDIA) model, both of which require the input of constants in the specification of the subgrid scale viscosity. In addition, a solution was obtained with no subgrid scale model for comparison purposes. Yoshizawa's model is based on the combination of Kraichman's Direct Interaction Analysis (1964) with the separation of scales of mean (grid scale) and fluctuating (subgrid scale) fields. This TSDIA model has the length scale as a function of space and time so that it incorporates the effects of local time rate of change and advection of the resolvable field. Both models are applied to the classical problem of an oscillating two-dimensional flow over a circular cylinder at various KC values atβ =1035.Calculated lift and in-line force coefficients compare favorably with available experimental data for KC≤2 with the best solutions developed from the Yoshizawa model. The solution for KC>2 demonstrates that the two-dimensional model is inadequate to describe the flow accurately.  相似文献

An efficient recycling algorithm is developed for injecting resolved turbulent content in a boundary layer as it switches from a Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) type treatment to a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) type treatment inside a generalized Detached-Eddy Simulation (DES). The motivation is to use RANS in the thinnest boundary-layer area, following the original argument in favour of DES, and LES in the thicker boundary-layer areas especially approaching separation, to improve accuracy and possibly obtain unsteady outputs. The algorithm relies on an overlap of the RANS and LES domains and, therefore, the availability of both RANS and LES solutions in the recycling region, which is about 5 boundary-layer thicknesses long. This permits a smooth transfer of the turbulent stresses from this section to the LES inflow. The continuity of the skin-friction distribution is very good, reflecting the excellent viability of the resolved turbulence. The approach is validated in a flat-plate boundary layer and an airfoil near stall, with mild pressure gradient near the interface, and then applied to the compressible flow over an idealized airliner windshield wiper. The pressure fluctuations at reattachment are 12dB more intense than under a simple boundary layer at the same speed, and the output contains all the quantities needed to calculate the transmission of sound through the glass.  相似文献

The present article focuses on the influence of an external perturbation on the dynamics and the topology of an axisymmetric separating/reattaching flow for a Mach number equal to 0.7. Zonal Detached Eddy Simulation (ZDES) is used to reproduce the flow dynamics downstream an axisymmetric backward facing step with and without a surrounding mixing layer. The instantaneous flowfield shows the influence of the outer shear layer whose structures interact with the separated flow of interest. The instantaneous flowfield depicts the scales of the two axisymmetric mixing layers. Then, the statistical properties of the flow illustrate an excellent agreement between the experiments (PIV and LDV) and the numerical simulation (ZDES). The second-order moment of the pressure coefficient unveils the very high fluctuation levels of the perturbed case compared to the unperturbed one. The analysis of the spectral content reveals a remarkable alteration of the spatial organization for the fluctuating pressure field at the wall and the normal velocity component fluctuations in the afterbody shear layer. Finally, the impact of the perturbation on the energy distribution of the afterbody unsteady side-loads is evidenced by single-point power spectral densities.  相似文献

Detached-eddy simulation (DES) is well understood in thin boundary layers, with the turbulence model in its Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) mode and flattened grid cells, and in regions of massive separation, with the turbulence model in its large-eddy simulation (LES) mode and grid cells close to isotropic. However its initial formulation, denoted DES97 from here on, can exhibit an incorrect behavior in thick boundary layers and shallow separation regions. This behavior begins when the grid spacing parallel to the wall Δ becomes less than the boundary-layer thickness δ, either through grid refinement or boundary-layer thickening. The grid spacing is then fine enough for the DES length scale to follow the LES branch (and therefore lower the eddy viscosity below the RANS level), but resolved Reynolds stresses deriving from velocity fluctuations (“LES content”) have not replaced the modeled Reynolds stresses. LES content may be lacking because the resolution is not fine enough to fully support it, and/or because of delays in its generation by instabilities. The depleted stresses reduce the skin friction, which can lead to premature separation.For some research studies in small domains, Δ is made much smaller than δ, and LES content is generated intentionally. However for natural DES applications in useful domains, it is preferable to over-ride the DES limiter and maintain RANS behavior in boundary layers, independent of Δ relative to δ. For this purpose, a new version of the technique – referred to as DDES, for Delayed DES – is presented which is based on a simple modification to DES97, similar to one proposed by Menter and Kuntz for the shear–stress transport (SST) model, but applicable to other models. Tests in boundary layers, on a single and a multi-element airfoil, a cylinder, and a backward-facing step demonstrate that RANS function is indeed maintained in thick boundary layers, without preventing LES function after massive separation. The new formulation better fulfills the intent of DES. Two other issues are discussed: the use of DES as a wall model in LES of attached flows, in which the known log-layer mismatch is not resolved by DDES; and a correction that is helpful at low cell Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

Hybrid or zonal RANS/LES approaches are recognized as the most promising way to accurately simulate complex unsteady flows under current computational limitations. One still open issue concerns the transition from a RANS to a LES or WMLES resolution in the stream-wise direction, when near wall turbulence is involved. Turbulence content has then to be prescribed at the transition to prevent from turbulence decay leading to possible flow relaminarization. The present paper aims to propose an efficient way to generate this switch, within the flow, based on a synthetic turbulence inflow condition, named Synthetic Eddy Method (SEM). As the knowledge of the whole Reynolds stresses is often missing, the scope of this paper is focused on generating the quantities required at the SEM inlet from a RANS calculation, namely the first and second order statistics of the aerodynamic field. Three different methods based on two different approaches are presented and their capability to accurately generate the needed aerodynamic values is investigated. Then, the ability of the combination SEM + Reconstruction method to manufacture well-behaved turbulence is demonstrated through spatially developing flat plate turbulent boundary layers. In the mean time, important intrinsic features of the Synthetic Eddy method are pointed out. The necessity of introducing, within the SEM, accurate data, with regards to the outer part of the boundary layer, is illustrated. Finally, user’s guidelines are given depending on the Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness, since one method is suitable for low Reynolds number while the second is dedicated to high ones with a transition located around Reθ = 3000.  相似文献

In order to reduce the high computational effort of wall-resolved large-eddy simulations (LES), the present paper suggests a hybrid LES–RANS approach which splits up the simulation into a near-wall RANS part and an outer LES part. Generally, RANS is adequate for attached boundary layers requiring reasonable CPU-time and memory, where LES can also be applied but demands extremely large resources. Contrarily, RANS often fails in flows with massive separation or large-scale vortical structures. Here, LES is without a doubt the best choice. The basic concept of hybrid methods is to combine the advantages of both approaches yielding a prediction method, which, on the one hand, assures reliable results for complex turbulent flows, including large-scale flow phenomena and massive separation, but, on the other hand, consumes much fewer resources than LES, especially for high Reynolds number flows encountered in technical applications. In the present study, a non-zonal hybrid technique is considered (according to the signification retained by the authors concerning the terms zonal and non-zonal), which leads to an approach where the suitable simulation technique is chosen more or less automatically. For this purpose the hybrid approach proposed relies on a unique modeling concept. In the LES mode a subgrid-scale model based on a one-equation model for the subgrid-scale turbulent kinetic energy is applied, where the length scale is defined by the filter width. For the viscosity-affected near-wall RANS mode the one-equation model proposed by Rodi et al. (J Fluids Eng 115:196–205, 1993) is used, which is based on the wall-normal velocity fluctuations as the velocity scale and algebraic relations for the length scales. Although the idea of combined LES–RANS methods is not new, a variety of open questions still has to be answered. This includes, in particular, the demand for appropriate coupling techniques between LES and RANS, adaptive control mechanisms, and proper subgrid-scale and RANS models. Here, in addition to the study on the behavior of the suggested hybrid LES–RANS approach, special emphasis is put on the investigation of suitable interface criteria and the adjustment of the RANS model. To investigate these issues, two different test cases are considered. Besides the standard plane channel flow test case, the flow over a periodic arrangement of hills is studied in detail. This test case includes a pressure-induced flow separation and subsequent reattachment. In comparison with a wall-resolved LES prediction encouraging results are achieved.   相似文献

A coupling methodology between an upstream Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulation and a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) further downstream is presented. The focus of this work is on the RANS-to-LES interface inside an attached turbulent boundary layer, where an unsteady LES content has to be explicitly generated from a steady RANS solution. The performance of the Synthetic-Eddy Method (SEM), which generates realistic synthetic eddies at the inflow of the LES, is investigated on a wide variety of turbulent flows, from simple channel and square duct flows to the flow over an airfoil trailing edge. The SEM is compared to other existing methods of generation of synthetic turbulence for LES, and is shown to reduce substantially the distance required to develop realistic turbulence downstream of the inlet.  相似文献
