The current study presents finite element simulations of shear localization along the interface between cohesionless granular soil and bounding structure under large shearing movement. Micro-polar (Cosserat) continuum approach is applied in the framework of elasto-plasticity in order to overcome the numerical problems of localization modeling seen in the conventional continuum mechanics. The effects of different micro-polar kinematic boundary conditions, along the interface, on the evolution and location of shear band are shown by the numerical results. Furthermore, shear band thickness is also investigated for its dependence on the initial void ratio, vertical pressure and mean grain size. Here, the distribution and evolution of static and kinematic quantities are the main focuses regarding infinite layer of micro-polar material during plane shearing, especially with advanced large movement of bounding structure. The influence of such movement has not been investigated yet in the literature. Based on the results obtained from this study, shear localization appears parallel to the direction of shearing. It occurs either in the middle of granular layer or near boundaries, regarding the assumed micro-polar kinematic boundary conditions at the bottom and top surfaces of granular soil layer. Narrower shear band is observed in lower rotation resistance of soil particles along the interface. It is emphasized that the displacement magnitude of bounding structure has significant effect on the distribution and evolution of state variables and polar quantities in the granular soil layer. However, continuous displacement has no meaningful effect on the thickness of shear band. Here, smooth distributions of void ratio and shear stress components are obtained within the shear band, what the other previous numerical investigations did not receive. Despite indirect linking of Lade’s model to the critical state soil mechanics, state variables tend towards asymptotical stationary condition in large shear deformation.  相似文献

A numerical investigation is carried out to study the transition of a subsonic boundary layer on a flat plate with roughness elements distributed over the entire surface. Post-transition, the effect of surface roughness on a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer (TBL) is explored. In the transitional regime, the onset of flow transition predicted by the current simulations is in agreement with the experimentally based correlations proposed in the literature. Transition mechanisms are shown to change significantly with the increasing roughness height. Roughness elements that are inside the boundary layer create an elevated shear layer and alternating high and low speed streaks near the wall. Secondary sinuous instabilities on the streaks destabilize the shear layer promoting transition to turbulence. For the roughness topology considered, it is observed that the instability wavelengths are governed by the streamwise and spanwise spacing between the roughness elements. In contrast, the roughness elements that are higher than the boundary layer create turbulent wakes in their lee. The scale of instability is much shorter and transition occurs due to the shedding from the obstacles. Post-transition, in the spatially developing TBL, the velocity defect profiles for both the smooth and rough walls collapsed when non dimensionalized in the outer units. However, when compared to the smooth wall, deviation in the Reynolds stresses are observable in the outer layer; the deviation being higher for the larger roughness elements.  相似文献

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are one of nature's most abundant structural material building blocks and possess outstanding mechanical properties including a tensile modulus comparable to Kevlar. It remains challenging to upscale these properties in CNC neat films and nanocomposites due to the difficulty of characterizing interfacial bonding between CNCs that governs stress transfer under deformation. Here we present new analyses based on atomistic simulations of shear and tensile failure of the interfaces between Iβ CNCs, providing new insight into factors governing the mechanical behavior of hierarchical nanocellulose materials. We compare the two most relevant crystal interfaces and find that hydrogen bonded surfaces have greater tensile strength compared to the surfaces governed by weaker interactions. On the contrary, shearing simulations reveal that friction between the atomic interfaces depends not only on surface energy but also the energy landscape along the shear direction. While being a weaker interface, the intersheet plane exhibits greater energy barriers to shear. The molecular roughness of this interface, characterized by a greater energy barrier, exhibits stick–slip deformation behavior as opposed to a more continuous sliding and rebonding mechanism observed for the interfaces with hydrogen bonds. Analytical models to describe the energy landscapes are developed using energy scaling relations for van der Waals surfaces in combination with a modification of the Prandtl–Tomlinson model for atomic friction. Our simulations pave the way for tailoring hierarchical CNC materials by taking a similar approach to techniques employed for describing metals, where mechanical properties can be tuned through a deeper understanding of grain boundary physics and nanoscale interfaces.  相似文献

The interface between soil and structure can be referred to as a soil-structure system, and its behavior plays an important role in many geotechnical engineering practices. In this study, results are presented from a series of monotonic direct shear tests performed on a sand-structure interface under constant normal stiffness using the discrete element method (DEM). Strain localization and dilatancy behavior of the interface is carefully examined at both macroscopic and microscopic scales. The effects of soil initial relative density and normal stress on the interface shear behavior are also investigated. The results show that a shear band progressively develops along the structural surface as shear displacement increases. At large shear displacement a unique relationship between stress ratio and void ratio is reached in the shear band for a certain normal stress, indicating that a critical state exists in the shear band. It is also found that the thickness and void ratio of the shear band at the critical state decreases with increasing normal stress. Comparison of the DEM simulation results with experimental results provides insight into the shear behavior of a sand-structure interface and offers a means for quantitative modeling of such interfaces based on the critical state soil mechanics.  相似文献

Near-wall measurements are performed to study the effects of surface roughness and viscous shear stresses on the transitionally rough regime (5 < k + < 70) of a zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer. The x-dependence is known from the eleven consecutive measurements in the streamwise direction, which allows for the computation of the streamwise gradients in the boundary layer equations. Thus, the skin friction is computed from the integrated boundary layer equation with errors of 3 and 5% for smooth and rough, respectively. It is found that roughness destroys the viscous layer near the wall, thus, reducing the contribution of the viscous stress in the wall region. As a result, the contribution in the wall shear stress due to form drag increases, while the viscous stress decreases. This yields Reynolds number invariance in the skin friction as k + increases into the fully rough regime. Furthermore, the roughness at the wall reduces the high peak of the streamwise component of the Reynolds stress in the near-wall region. However, for the Reynolds wall-normal and shear stress components, its contribution is not significantly altered for sand grain roughness.  相似文献

Surface roughness effects in turbulent boundary layers   总被引:7,自引:7,他引:0
The effects of surface roughness on a turbulent boundary layer are investigated by comparing measurements over two rough walls with measurements from a smooth wall boundary layer. The two rough surfaces have very different surface geometries although designed to produce the same roughness function, i.e. to have nominally the same effect on the mean velocity profile. Different turbulent transport characteristics are observed for the rough surfaces. Substantial effects on the stresses occur throughout the layer showing that the roughness effects are not confined to the wall region. The turbulent energy production and the turbulent diffusion are significantly different between the two rough surfaces, the diffusion having opposite sign in the region γ/δ < 0.5. Although velocity spectra exhibit differences between the three surfaces, the mean energy dissipation rate does not appear to be significantly affected by the roughness. The individual and coupled effects of the incoming free-stream turbulence (FST) and surface roughness on the transition of a separated shear layer over a flat plate is numerically investigated using Large eddy simulation (LES). The upper wall of the test section is inviscid and specifically contoured to impose a streamwise pressure distribution over the flat plate to simulate the suction surface of a low pressure turbine (LPT) blade. The interaction of the streamwise streaks due to FST and roughness with the separated shear layer is captured. The streaks induced by FST are intermittent in nature and the streaks due to roughness are steady for a given topology of the rough surface. Both FST and roughness promoted near-wall mixing. The ‘net effect’ of mixing in the pre-separated region is manifested by a shift the inflection point of the velocity profile towards the wall. This resulted in the upstream shift of the transition point and a significant reduction in the size of the separation bubble. The combined effect of FST and roughness further reduced the size of separation bubble. The streamwise evolution of the boundary layer parameters has been compared for different cases. The potential ‘roughness benefit’ obtained in the case of highly loaded turbine blades in terms of its considerable reduction of profile loss is also shown.  相似文献

Nanoscale metallic multilayered (NMM) composites possess ultra high strength (order of GPa) and high ductility, and exhibit high fatigue resistance. Their mechanical behavior is governed mainly by interface properties (coherent and/or incoherent interfaces), dislocation mechanisms in small volume, and dislocation-interface interaction. In this work, we investigate these effects within a dislocation dynamics (DD) framework and analyze the mechanical behavior of two systems: (1) a bi-material system (CuNi) with coherent interface and (2) a newly developed tri-material system (CuNiNb) composed of both coherent and incoherent interfaces. For the bi-material case we analyze the influence of networks of interfacial dislocations whose nature and distribution are commensurate with the level of relaxation and loading of the structure. Misfit and pre-deposited interfacial dislocation arrays, as well as combinations of both, are studied and the dependence of strength on layer thickness is reported, along with observed dislocation mechanisms. It is shown that interfacial defect configurations significantly alter the strength and mechanical behavior of the material. Furthermore, it is shown that the implementation of penetrable interfaces in DD captures the strength dependence at layer thicknesses on the order of 3-7 nm. For the tri-material case we analyze the effects of coherent and incoherent interfaces in large-scale simulations. The results show that these materials have strong strength-size dependence but are limited by the strength of the incoherent (CuNb) interface which is weak in shear. The weak interface acts as a dislocation sink. This in turn induces an internal shear stress field that activates cross-slip in the adjacent CuNi interlace and thus causing softening. Moreover, it is shown that the yield stress of the CuNiNb system is controlled by the volume fraction of the Nb. Because Nb is the most compliant of the three materials, an increase in volume fraction of Nb decreases the overall yield strength of the material.  相似文献

This paper reports velocity measurements obtained on a smooth and two geometrically different types of rough surfaces in an open channel. The measurements were obtained using a laser-Doppler anemometer. The recent boundary layer theory proposed by George and Castillo (1997) and conventional scaling laws are used to analyze the data. The present flow shows a strong structural similarity to a canonical turbulent boundary layer in the inner layer. The results demonstrate that surface roughness increases the wake parameter. Surface roughness also enhances the levels of turbulence intensities, Reynolds shear stress and triple correlations over most of the boundary layer, but decreases the stress anisotropy.  相似文献

The motion and state of soil at the interface with a penetrating rigid projectile is studied by numerical solution of the problem of a cylindrical projectile which expands and at the same time moves translationally along its axis in soil. The soil behavior is described using the model of a compressible elastoplastic medium with transition to a plastic state depending on the pressure in it. It is shown that a thin layer of soil at the interface with the projectile nose should be set in motion and move together with the projectile without sliding. An analysis is performed of the validity of using the dry friction law to determine the shear stresses on the projectile surface during penetration. The heat release in the soil layer at the interface due to internal friction and its possible effect on the penetration are estimated. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 46, No. 6, pp. 116–127, November–December, 2005.  相似文献

The mean velocity field and skin friction characteristics of a plane turbulent wall jet on a smooth and a fully rough surface were studied using Particle Image Velocimetry. The Reynolds number based on the slot height and the exit velocity of the jet was Re = 13,400 and the nominal size of the roughness was k = 0.44 mm. For this Reynolds number and size of roughness element, the flow was in the fully rough regime. The surface roughness results in a distinct change in the shape of the mean velocity profile when scaled in outer coordinates, i.e. using the maximum velocity and outer half-width as the relevant velocity and length scales, respectively. Using inner coordinates, the mean velocity in the lower region of the inner layer was consistent with a logarithmic profile which characterizes the overlap region of a turbulent boundary layer; for the rough wall case, the velocity profile was shifted downward due to the enhanced wall shear stress. For the fully rough flow, the decay rate of the maximum velocity of the wall jet is increased, and the skin friction coefficient is much larger than for the smooth wall case. The inner layer is also thicker for the rough wall case. The effects of surface roughness were observed to penetrate into the outer layer and slightly enhance the spread rate for the outer half-width, which was not observed in most other studies of transitionally rough wall jet flows.  相似文献

To investigate the nonlinear vibration behavior of a shrouded blade with friction dynamic contact interface, a friction contact stiffness model is proposed to describe the friction force at different rough interfaces and different normal loads. In the proposed model, the friction contact interface is discretized to a series of friction contact pairs and each of them can experience stick, slip, or separate states. Fractal geometry is used to simulate the topography of contact surfaces. The contact stiffness is calculated using the Hertz contact theory and fractal geometry, which is related to contact interfaces parameters including normal load, roughness, Young??s modulus, and Poisson??s ratio. The trajectory tracking method is used to predict the friction force and it is not necessary to judge the transition condition among stick, slip, and separate states. It is suitable for complicated periodic motion of the contact interfaces. The forced response of a real shrouded blade is predicted using the proposed model and the multi-harmonic balance method. The effect of surface roughness, initial normal load, and contact area on the forced response of a shrouded blade is studied. It is shown that contact stiffness increases with normal load and fractal dimension. The resonant amplitude is sensitive to the initial normal load and contact surface roughness. The response can be influenced by the contact area, which is an important parameter for blade designers.  相似文献

Torsion of an elastic half-space by a rigid punch is investigated. The boundary of the half-space is assumed to be rough. Two geometries of the punch-parabolic and flat end are considered. It is shown that the contact area consists of stick and slip zones. This fact, which is well-known in the classical torsional contact of the elastic half-space with the smooth surface and the parabolic punch, also holds true for the flat-ended punch if the boundary roughness is involved. The partial slip problems are reduced to the integral equations, which are solved numerically. The presented results show the effects of boundary roughness on the shear stresses, size of the stick area and the relation between the twisting moment and the angle of twist.  相似文献

This work characterizes the impacts of the realistic roughness due to deposition of foreign materials on the turbulent flows at surface transition from elevated rough-wall to smooth-wall. High resolution PIV measurements were performed in the streamwise-wall-normal (xy) planes at two different spanwise positions in both smooth and rough backward-facing step flows. The experiment conditions were set at a Reynolds number of 3450 based on the free stream velocity U and the mean step height h, expansion ratio of 1.01, and the ratio of incoming boundary layer thickness to the step height, δ/h, of 8. The mean flow structures are observed to be modified by the roughness and they illustrate three-dimensional features in rough backward-facing step flows. The mean reattachment length Xr is significantly reduced by the roughness at one PIV measurement position while is slightly increased by the different roughness topography at the other measurement position. The mean velocity profiles at the reattachment point indicate that the studied roughness weakens the perturbation of the step to the incoming turbulent flow. Comparisons of Reynolds normal and shear stresses, productions of normal stresses, quadrant analysis of the instantaneous shear-stress contributing events, and mean spanwise vorticity reveal that the turbulence in the separated shear layer is reduced by the studied roughness. The results also indicate an earlier separation of the turbulent boundary layer over the current rough step, probably due to the adverse pressure gradient produced by the roughness topography even before the step.  相似文献

The flow developing downstream of a step change from smooth to rough surface condition is studied in the light of Townsend’s wall similarity hypothesis. Previous studies seem to support the hypothesis for channel and pipe flows, but there are considerable controversies about its application to boundary layers and in particular to surface roughness formed by spanwise bars. It has been suggested that this controversy arises from insufficient separation of scales between the boundary layer thickness and the roughness length scale. An experimental investigation has therefore been undertaken where the flow evolves from a fully developed smooth wall boundary layer at high Reynolds numbers over a step in surface roughness (Re θ = 13,400 at the step). The flow is mapped through the development of the internal layer until the flow is fully developed over the rough wall. The internal layer is found to grow as δ ∼ X 0.73, and after about 15 boundary layer thicknesses at the step, the internal layer has reached the outer edge of the incoming layer. At the last rough wall measurement station, the Reynolds number has grown to Re θ ≈ 32,600 and the ratio of boundary layer to roughness length scales is δ/k ≈ 140. The outer layer differences between the smooth and the rough wall data were found to be sufficiently small to conclude that for this setup the Townsend’s wall similarity hypothesis appears to hold.  相似文献

A contact stress analysis is presented for a layered elastic half-space in contact with a rough surface exhibiting self-affine (fractal) behavior. Relationships for the mean contact pressure versus representative strain and the real half-contact width versus elastic properties of the layer and the substrate, asperity radius, layer thickness, and truncated half-contact width were derived from finite element simulations of a layered medium compressed elastically by a rigid cylindrical asperity. These relationships were incorporated in a numerical algorithm that was used to obtain the contact pressure distributions and stresses generated by the asperity contacts formed at the interface of the layered medium and the fractal surface. Analytical solutions illustrate the significance of the elastic material properties, layer thickness, and surface topography (roughness) on global parameters such as normal load and real contact area. Results for the contact pressure distribution and the surface and subsurface stresses provide insight into the initiation of yielding and the tendency for cracking in the layered medium. It is shown that cracking at the surface and the layer/substrate interface is more likely to occur in the case of a stiff layer, whereas surface cracking is more prominent for a relatively compliant layer.  相似文献

The turbulence structures near a sheared air-water interface were experimentally investigated with the hydrogen bubble visualization technique. Surface shear was imposed by an airflow over the water flow which was kept free from surface waves. Results show that the wind shear has the main influence on coherent structures under air-water interfaces. Low- and high- speed streaks form in the region close to the interface as a result of the imposed shear stress. When a certain airflow velocity is reached, “turbulent spots” appear randomly at low-speed streaks with some characteristics of hairpin vortices. At even higher shear rates, the flow near the interface is dominated primarily by intermittent bursting events. The coherent structures observed near sheared air-water interfaces show qualitative similarities with those occurring in near-wall turbulence. However, a few distinctive phenomena were also observed, including the fluctuating thickness of the instantaneous boundary layer and vertical vortices in bursting processes, which appear to be associated with the characteristics of air-water interfaces.

The behavior of soil-structure interface can be crucial to the overall response of a soil-structure system. The numerical simulation of soil-structure interaction problem requires proper modeling of the interface. The similarity between the behavior of soil and interface is first analyzed in the present paper. With this similarity, the concept of critical state soil mechanics (CSSM), which has been successfully used in the modeling of soil behavior, is used to develop a constitutive model for soil-structure interface in the framework of generalized plasticity. The model is capable of modeling strain hardening, softening, normal dilatancy and stress-path dependency of interface between sandy soil and structures during shearing. The effects of normal pressure as well as density of sand are captured in the model. The performance of the model is verified with various experimental results. The unified modeling of the behavior of interfaces with different roughness, different density of soil and different normal pressures using the concept of CSSM is also successfully attempted.  相似文献
