In this paper, a method that can be used to model low Reynolds number incompressible flows with curved boundaries using SPH was presented. In contrast to that usually used for the flows with flat and straight boundaries, the hydrostatic pressure gradient is treated as a variable body force in this method, and thus, it can be applied to simulate the flows with curved boundaries. Three numerical examples of low Reynolds number incompressible flows, including Poiseuille flow, flow in a section of blood vessel with a local expansion, and flow between inclined plates were calculated to test the method. The results obtained with the proposed method were in good agreement with the analytical solutions. It implies that the method presented in this paper can be successfully used to simulate low Reynolds number incompressible flows not only with flat and straight boundaries but also with curved boundaries. A general low-order fluid–structure interaction model capable of evaluating the multi-mode interactions in vortex-induced vibrations of flexible curved/straight structures is presented. Cross-flow motions due to unsteady lift forces of inclined sagged cables and tensioned beams in uniform currents are investigated. In contrast to a linear equation governing the transverse motion of straight beams or cables typically considered in the literature, coupled horizontal/vertical (axial/transverse) displacements and geometric nonlinearities of curved cable (straight beam) are accounted for. A distributed nonlinear wake oscillator is considered in the approximation of space–time varying hydrodynamics. This semi-empirical fluid force model in general depends on the mass-damping parameter and has further been modified to capture both the effects of varying initial curvatures of the inclined cylinder and the Reynolds number. Numerical simulations are performed in the case of varying flow velocities and parametric results highlight several meaningful aspects of vortex-induced vibrations of long flexible cylinders. These comprise multi-mode lock-in, sharing, switching and interaction features in the space and time domains, the estimated maximum modal and total amplitudes, the resonant nonlinear modes of flexible cylinders and their space–time modifications, and the influence of fluid/structure parameters. A shortcoming of single-mode or linear structural model is underlined. Some quantitative and qualitative comparisons of numerical/experimental results are discussed to demonstrate the validity and required improvement of the proposed modelling and analysis predictions.  相似文献

Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) has been increasing in popularity rapidly in recent years and is being used for an ever wider range of applications. Central to almost all of these application is the inclusion of accurate wall boundaries. We present here a discussion of boundaries in SPH, in particular, focusing on reflected ghost‐particle boundaries. We show how one can include curved shapes as geometrical objects and more generally as parametric non‐uniform rational B‐spline (NURBS) curves. By properly considering the reflection operation, we derive a correction factor that demonstrably improves the accuracy of the SPH solution and present examples to confirm this. NURBS are standard for representing both 2D curves and 3D surfaces. We detail how they can be practically included in an SPH implementation, including how to calculate various required quantities and reflect particles in the NURBS object. An efficient curvilinear non‐hydrostatic free surface model is developed to simulate surface water waves in horizontally curved boundaries. The generalized curvilinear governing equations are solved by a fractional step method on a rectangular transformed domain. Of importance is to employ a higher order (either quadratic or cubic spline function) integral method for the top‐layer non‐hydrostatic pressure under a staggered grid framework. Model accuracy and efficiency, in terms of required vertical layers, are critically examined on a linear progressive wave case. The model is then applied to simulate waves propagating in a canal with variable widths, cnoidal wave runup around a circular cylinder, and three‐dimensional wave transformation in a circular channel. Overall the results show that the curvilinear non‐hydrostatic model using a few, e.g. 2–4, vertical layers is capable of simulating wave dispersion, diffraction, and reflection due to curved sidewalls. The interaction of solitary waves with multiple, in-line vertical cylinders is investigated. The fixed cylinders are of constant circular cross section and extend from the seafloor to the free surface. In general, there are N of them lined in a row parallel to the incoming wave direction. Both the nonlinear, generalized Boussinesq and the Green–Naghdi shallow-water wave equations are used. A boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinate system is employed to facilitate the use of the finite-difference method on curved boundaries. The governing equations and boundary conditions are transformed from the physical plane onto the computational plane. These equations are then solved in time on the computational plane that contains a uniform grid and by use of the successive over-relaxation method and a second-order finite-difference method to determine the horizontal force and overturning moment on the cylinders. Resulting solitary wave forces from the nonlinear Green–Naghdi and the Boussinesq equations are presented, and the forces are compared with the experimental data when available.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the fluid boundary separation problem of the conventional dynamic solid boundary treatment (DSBT) and proposes a modified DSBT (MDSBT). Classic 2D free dam break flows and 3D dam break flows against a rectangular box are used to assess the performance of this MDSBT in free surface flow and violent fluid–structure interaction, respectively. Another test, water column oscillations in a U‐tube, is specially designed to reveal the applicability of dealing with two types of particular boundaries: the wet–dry solid boundary and the large‐curvature solid boundary. A comparison between the numerical results and the experimental data shows that the MDSBT is capable of eliminating the fluid boundary separation, improving the accuracy of the solid boundary pressure calculations and preventing the unphysical penetration of fluid particles. Using a 2D SPH numerical wave tank with MDSBT, the interactions between regular waves and a simplified vertical wave barrier are simulated. The numerical results reveal that the maximum horizontal force occurs at the endpoint of the vertical board, and with the enlargement of the relative submerged board length, the maximum moment grows linearly; furthermore, the relative average mass transportation under the breakwater initially increases to 11.14 per wave strike but is later reduced. The numerical simulation of a full‐scale 3D wave barrier with two vertical boards shows that the wave and structure interactions in the practical project are far more complicated than in the simplified 2D models. The SPH model using the MDSBT is capable of providing a reference for engineering designs. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A floating body with substantial heave motion is a challenging fluid–structure interaction problem for numerical simulation. In this paper we develop SPH in three dimensions to include variable particle mass distribution using an arbitrary Lagrange–Eulerian formulation with an embedded Riemann solver. A wedge or cone in initially still water is forced to move with a displacement equal to the surface elevation of a focused wave group. A two‐dimensional wedge case is used to evaluate two forms of repulsive‐force boundary condition on the body; the force depending on the normal distance from the object surface produced closer agreement with the experiment. For a three‐dimensional heaving cone the comparison between SPH and experiment shows excellent agreement for the force and free surface for motion with low peak spectral frequencies while for a higher peak frequency the agreement is reasonable in terms of phase and magnitude, but a small discrepancy appears at the troughs in the motion. Capturing the entire three‐dimensional flow field using an initially uniform particle distribution with sufficiently fine resolution requires an extremely large number of particles and consequently large computing resource. To mitigate this issue, we employ a variable mass distribution with fine resolution around the body. Using a refined mass distribution in a preselected area avoids the need for a dynamic particle refinement scheme and leads to a computational speedup of more than 600% or much improved results for a given number of particles. SPH with variable mass distribution is then applied to a single heaving‐float wave energy converter, the ‘Manchester Bobber’, in extreme waves and compared with experiments in a wave tank. The SPH simulations are presented for two cases: a single degree‐of‐freedom system with motion restricted to the vertical direction and with general motion allowing six degrees‐of‐freedom. The motion predicted for the float with general motion is in much closer agreement with experimental data than the vertically constrained system. Using variable particle mass distribution is shown to produce close agreement with a computation time 20% of that required with a uniformly fine resolution. Numerical modeling of multiphase flow generally requires a special procedure at the solid wall in order to be consistent with Young's law for static contact angles. The standard approach in the lattice Boltzmann method, which consists of imposing fictive densities at the solid lattice sites, is shown to be deficient for this task. Indeed, fictive mass transfer along the boundary could happen and potentially spoil the numerical results. In particular, when the contact angle is less than 90 degrees, the deficiencies of the standard model are major. Various videos that demonstrate this behavior are provided (Supporting Information). A new approach is proposed and consists of directly imposing the contact angle at the boundaries in much the same way as Dirichlet boundary conditions are generally imposed. The proposed method is able to retrieve analytical solutions for static contact angles in the case of straight and curved boundaries even when variable density and viscosity ratios between the phases are considered. Although the proposed wetting boundary condition is shown to significantly improve the numerical results for one particular class of lattice Boltzmann model, it is believed that other lattice Boltzmann multiphase schemes could also benefit from the underlying ideas of the proposed method. The proposed algorithm is two‐dimensional, and the D2Q9 lattice is used. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this work the fluid–structure interactions are considered by investigating a straight but slender pipe interacting with uniform water flow. Two configurations are studied, namely vertically and horizontally positioned pipes, which are modelled as an Euler–Bernoulli beam with flexural stiffness. Both pretension and length-wise mass distribution are considered. The structure is assumed to be moving only in the direction normal to flow (cross-flow motion) hence its in-line motion is neglected. The external fluid force acting on the structure is the result of the action of sectional vortex-induced drag and lift forces. Only mean drag force is considered, with time varying lift force modelled using a non-linear oscillator equation of the Van der Pol type. The obtained coupled system of non-linear partial differential equations is simplified employing Galerkin-type discretisation. The resulting ordinary differential equations are solved numerically providing multi-mode approximations of cross-flow displacement and non-dimensional lift coefficient. The comparison between the responses of vertical and horizontal structures shows that, as expected, due to a balancing between pretension and weight, in general a higher amplitude of vibration is observed for the vertical configuration than in the same location along the pipe for the horizontal configuration in the lower part of the structure. However, lower amplitudes are obtained in the upper part of the pipe. The horizontal configuration solutions are identical in symmetrical locations along the pipe due to constant pretension. The influence of the wake equation coefficients and the fluid force coefficients on the response amplitudes has been also considered together with the length of the pipe and pretension level, and the appropriate response curves are included. Finally, for the higher mode approximations it has been shown that the vibrations level at lower frequencies is predicted reasonably well by retaining only a small subset of modes.  相似文献

There are many challenges in the numerical simulation of liquid sloshing in horizontal cylinders and spherical containers using the finite element method of arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) formulation: tracking the motion of the free surface with the contact points, defining the mesh velocity on the curved wall boundary and updating the computational mesh. In order to keep the contact points slipping along the curved side wall, the shape vector in each time advancement is defined to modify the kinematical boundary conditions on the free surface. A special function is introduced to automatically smooth the nodal velocities on the curved wall boundary based on the liquid nodal velocities. The elliptic partial differential equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions can directly rezone the inner nodal velocities in more than a single freedom. The incremental fractional step method is introduced to solve the finite element liquid equations. The numerical results that stemmed from the algorithm show good agreement with experimental phenomena, which demonstrates that the ALE method provides an efficient computing scheme in moving curved wall boundaries. This method can be extended to 3D cases by improving the technique to compute the shape vector. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Drop size distribution and concentration profile data for hydrocarbon-water mixtures are obtained in a 8.2 cm dia pipe at a range of velocities for a straight horizontal pipe, horizontal and vertical flow after one bend and vertical flow after three bends. The laser image processing technique employed in this project is proven reliable.

The maximum drop size (d99), is more dependent on the number of upstream interactive bends than on the velocity. The drop size distributions follow a Rosin-Rammler power law. The values of Rosin-Rammler exponents, based on this work, are on average 2.1 for all the configurations studied.

The concentration profiles as a function of velocity for straight horizontal flow are obtained and show the transition from stratified to adequately dispersed flow at about 2.3 m/s velocity. The concentration profiles for horizontal or vertical flow after one bend show dispersed flow in some cases; however, in other cases swirling makes representative sampling more difficult.

Vertical downflow after three interactive bends breaks the droplets to a finer size, and concentration profiles obtained in this location are more uniform than the other configurations studied. Representative sampling can be accomplished in this location even at 0.7–1.0 m/s velocity, in a 8.2 cm pipe.  相似文献

In this work, an approach is proposed for solving the 3D shallow water equations with embedded boundaries that are not aligned with the underlying horizontal Cartesian grid. A hybrid cut‐cell/ghost‐cell method is used together with a direction‐splitting implicit solver: Ghost cells are used for the momentum equations in order to prescribe the correct boundary condition at the immersed boundary, while cut cells are used in the continuity equation in order to conserve mass. The resulting scheme is robust, does not suffer any time step limitation for small cut cells, and conserves fluid mass up to machine precision. Moreover, the solver displays a second‐order spatial accuracy, both globally and locally. Comparisons with analytical solutions and reference numerical solutions on curvilinear grids confirm the quality of the method. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

PIV measurements near a wall are generally difficult due to low seeding density, low velocity, high velocity gradient, and strong reflections. Such problems are often compounded by curved boundaries, which are commonly found in many industrial and medical applications. To systematically solve these problems, this paper presents two novel techniques for near-wall measurement, together named Interfacial PIV, which extracts both wall-shear gradient and near-wall tangential velocity profiles at one-pixel resolution. To deal with curved walls, image strips at a curved wall are stretched into rectangles by means of conformal transformation. To extract the maximal spatial information on the near-wall tangential velocity field, a novel 1D correlation function is performed on each horizontal pixel line of the transformed image template to form a “correlation stack”. This 1D correlation function requires that the wall-normal displacement component of the particles be smaller than the particle image diameter in order to produce a correlation signal. Within the image regions satisfying this condition, the correlation function yields peaks that form a tangential velocity profile. To determine this profile robustly, we propose to integrate gradients of tangential velocity outward from the wall, wherein the gradient at each wall-normal position is measured by fitting a straight line to the correlation peaks. The capability of Interfacial PIV was validated against Particle Image Distortion using synthetic image pairs generated from a DNS velocity field over a sinusoidal bed. Different velocity measurement schemes performed on the same correlation stacks were also demonstrated. The results suggest that Interfacial PIV using line fitting and gradient integration provides the best accuracy of all cases in the measurements of velocity gradient and velocity profile near wall surfaces.  相似文献

The Saint-Venant torsion problems of a cylinder with curvilinear cracks were considered and reduced to solving the boundary integral equations only on cracks. Using the interpolation models for both singular crack tip elements and other crack linear elements, the boundary element formulas of the torsion rigidity and stress intensity factors were given. Some typical torsion problems of a cylinder involving a straight, kinked or curvilinear crack were calculated. The obtained results for the case of straight crack agree well with those given by using the Gauss-Chebyshev integration formulas, which demonstrates the validity and applicability of the present boundary element method.  相似文献

This paper touches upon the computer simulation of the propagation of elastic waves in three-dimensional multilayer fractured media. The dynamic processes are described using the defining system of equations in the partial derivatives of the deformed solid mechanics. The numerical solution of this system is carried out via the grid-characteristic method on curvilinear structural grids. The fractured nature of the medium is accounted for by explicitly selecting the boundaries of individual cracks and setting special boundary conditions in them. Various models of heterogeneous deformed media with a fractured structures are considered: a homogeneous medium, a medium with horizontal boundaries, a medium with inclined boundaries, and a medium curvilinear boundaries. The wave fields detected on the surface are obtained, and their structures are analyzed. It is demonstrated that it is possible to detect the waves scattered from fractured media even in the case of nonparallel (inclined and curvilinear) boundaries of geological layers.  相似文献

A horizontally curvilinear non‐hydrostatic free surface model that embeds the second‐order projection method, the so‐called θ scheme, in fractional time stepping is developed to simulate nonlinear wave motion in curved boundaries. The model solves the unsteady, Navier–Stokes equations in a three‐dimensional curvilinear domain by incorporating the kinematic free surface boundary condition with a top‐layer boundary condition, which has been developed to improve the numerical accuracy and efficiency of the non‐hydrostatic model in the standard staggered grid layout. The second‐order Adams–Bashforth scheme with the third‐order spatial upwind method is implemented in discretizing advection terms. Numerical accuracy in terms of nonlinear phase speed and amplitude is verified against the nonlinear Stokes wave theory over varying wave steepness in a two‐dimensional numerical wave tank. The model is then applied to investigate the nonlinear wave characteristics in the presence of dispersion caused by reflection and diffraction in a semicircular channel. The model results agree quantitatively with superimposed analytical solutions. Finally, the model is applied to simulate nonlinear wave run‐ups caused by wave‐body interaction around a bottom‐mounted cylinder. The numerical results exhibit good agreement with experimental data and the second‐order diffraction theory. Overall, it is shown that the developed model, with only three vertical layers, is capable of accurately simulating nonlinear waves interacting within curved boundaries. The vulnerability of civil engineering structures with fundamental frequency, say roughly above 1?Hz, (or buildings having less than ten stories), when exposed to the strong motion phase of an earthquake is considerably reduced by means of base isolation. The low-pass filter for isolating horizontal vibrations is redesigned where the classical elastomeric bearings are substituted by a number of prestressed helical steel springs with pivoted columns along their vertical axes carrying a fraction of the dead weight and guiding the remaining horizontal motion. The base-isolated building in its fundamental mode is considered to be rigid and low-cost tuned liquid column gas dampers (TLCGDs), in optimal arrangement within the plan of the basement of the building, supply the effective damping of the remaining horizontal vibrations. TLCGD-tuning in a first step is performed by a simple transformation of the well-documented optimal parameters of the tuned mass damper (TMD) followed by fine-tuning in state space. The action of the passive damping device is commonly considered to be sufficient. Since the gas-spring effect somewhat counter acts changes in fluid mass, the absorber can be used as a water reservoir. Compatible sliding elements are innovatively designed to resist the motion of the building relative to the ground for sufficiently small disturbances by static friction, thus complete the isolation system. However, during seismic excitation, the frictional contact is released over much of the time to avoid excessive wear.  相似文献
